In this work, we unify several existing decoding strategies for punctuation prediction in one framework and introduce a novel strategy which utilises multiple predictions at each word across different windows. We show that significant improvements can be achieved by optimising these strategies after training a model, only leading to a potential increase in inference time, with no requirement for retraining. We further use our decoding strategy framework for the first comparison of tagging and classification approaches for punctuation prediction in a real-time setting. Our results show that a classification approach for punctuation prediction can be beneficial when little or no right-side context is available.
With the increased applications of automatic speech recognition (ASR) in recent years, it is essential to automatically insert punctuation marks and remove disfluencies in transcripts, to improve the readability of the transcripts as well as the performance of subsequent applications, such as machine translation, dialogue systems, and so forth. In this paper, we propose a Controllable Time-delay Transformer (CT-Transformer) model that jointly completes the punctuation prediction and disfluency detection tasks in real time. The CT-Transformer model facilitates freezing partial outputs with cont…
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems in the medical domain that focus on transcribing clinical dictations and doctor-patient conversations often pose many challenges due to the complexity of the domain. ASR output typically undergoes automatic punctuation to enable users to speak naturally, without having to vocalise awkward and explicit punctuation commands, such as "period", "add comma" or "exclamation point", while truecasing enhances user readability and improves the performance of downstream NLP tasks. This paper proposes a conditional joint modeling framework for prediction of punc…
The recently proposed mask-predict decoding algorithm has narrowed the performance gap between semi-autoregressive machine translation models and the traditional left-to-right approach. We introduce a new training method for conditional masked language models, SMART, which mimics the semi-autoregressive behavior of mask-predict, producing training examples that contain model predictions as part of their inputs. Models trained with SMART produce higher-quality translations when using mask-predict decoding, effectively closing the remaining performance gap with fully autoregressive models.
Most machine translation systems generate text autoregressively from left to right. We, instead, use a masked language modeling objective to train a model to predict any subset of the target words, conditioned on both the input text and a partially masked target translation. This approach allows for efficient iterative decoding, where we first predict all of the target words non-autoregressively, and then repeatedly mask out and regenerate the subset of words that the model is least confident about. By applying this strategy for a constant number of iterations, our model improves state-of-the-…

For real-world deployment of automatic speech recognition (ASR), the system is desired to be capable of fast inference while relieving the requirement of computational resources. The recently proposed end-to-end ASR system based on mask-predict with connectionist temporal classification (CTC), Mask-CTC, fulfills this demand by generating tokens in a non-autoregressive fashion. While Mask-CTC achieves remarkably fast inference speed, its recognition performance falls behind that of conventional autoregressive (AR) systems. To boost the performance of Mask-CTC, we first propose to enhance the en…
