Standard Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) designs rarely focus on the importance of explicitly capturing diverse features to enhance the network's performance. Instead, most existing methods follow an indirect approach of increasing or tuning the networks' depth and width, which in many cases significantly increases the computational cost. Inspired by a biological visual system, we propose a Diverse and Adaptive Attention Convolutional Network (DA$^{2}$-Net), which enables any feed-forward CNNs to explicitly capture diverse features and adaptively select and emphasize the most informative features to efficiently boost the network's performance. DA$^{2}$-Net incurs negligible computational overhead and it is designed to be easily integrated with any CNN architecture. We extensively evaluated DA$^{2}$-Net on benchmark datasets, including CIFAR100, SVHN, and ImageNet, with various CNN architectures. The experimental results show DA$^{2}$-Net provides a significant performance improvement with very minimal computational overhead.

There has been a recent surge of research interest in attacking the problem of social relation inference based on images. Existing works classify social relations mainly by creating complicated graphs of human interactions, or learning the foreground and/or background information of persons and objects, but ignore holistic scene context. The holistic scene refers to the functionality of a place in images, such as dinning room, playground and office. In this paper, by mimicking human understanding on images, we propose an approach of \textbf{PR}actical \textbf{I}nference in \textbf{S}ocial r\te…
Recently Homomorphic Encryption (HE) is used to implement Privacy-Preserving Neural Networks (PPNNs) that perform inferences directly on encrypted data without decryption. Prior PPNNs adopt mobile network architectures such as SqueezeNet for smaller computing overhead, but we find naïvely using mobile network architectures for a PPNN does not necessarily achieve shorter inference latency. Despite having less parameters, a mobile network architecture typically introduces more layers and increases the HE multiplicative depth of a PPNN, thereby prolonging its inference latency. In this paper, we …

In graph neural networks (GNNs), message passing iteratively aggregates nodes' information from their direct neighbors while neglecting the sequential nature of multi-hop node connections. Such sequential node connections e.g., metapaths, capture critical insights for downstream tasks. Concretely, in recommender systems (RSs), disregarding these insights leads to inadequate distillation of collaborative signals. In this paper, we employ collaborative subgraphs (CSGs) and metapaths to form metapath-aware subgraphs, which explicitly capture sequential semantics in graph structures. We propose me…
In recent years, the fast rise in number of studies on graph neural network (GNN) has put it from the theories research to reality application stage. Despite the encouraging performance achieved by GNN, less attention has been paid to the privacy-preserving training and inference over distributed graph data in the related literature. Due to the particularity of graph structure, it is challenging to extend the existing private learning framework to GNN. Motivated by the idea of split learning, we propose a \textbf{S}erver \textbf{A}ided \textbf{P}rivacy-preserving \textbf{GNN} (SAPGNN) for the …

In this paper, we propose an accurate edge detector using richer convolutional features (RCF). Since objects in nature images have various scales and aspect ratios, the automatically learned rich hierarchical representations by CNNs are very critical and effective to detect edges and object boundaries. And the convolutional features gradually become coarser with receptive fields increasing. Based on these observations, our proposed network architecture makes full use of multiscale and multi-level information to perform the image-to-image edge prediction by combining all of the useful convoluti…

The problem of basket recommendation~(BR) is to recommend a ranking list of items to the current basket. Existing methods solve this problem by assuming the items within the same basket are correlated by one semantic relation, thus optimizing the item embeddings. However, this assumption breaks when there exist multiple intents within a basket. For example, assuming a basket contains \{\textit{bread, cereal, yogurt, soap, detergent}\} where \{\textit{bread, cereal, yogurt}\} are correlated through the "breakfast" intent, while \{\textit{soap, detergent}\} are of "cleaning" intent, ignoring mul…
Current deep convolutional networks are fixed in their topology. We explore the possibilites of making the convolutional topology a parameter itself by combining NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and propose such a system using blocks of Residual Networks (ResNets). We then explain how our suggested system can only be built once additional optimizations have been made, as genetic algorithms are way more demanding than training per backpropagation. On the way there we explain most of those buzzwords and offer a gentle and brief introduction…

Fully convolutional detectors discard the one-to-many assignment and adopt a one-to-one assigning strategy to achieve end-to-end detection but suffer from the slow convergence issue. In this paper, we revisit these two assignment methods and find that bringing one-to-many assignment back to end-to-end fully convolutional detectors helps with model convergence. Based on this observation, we propose {\em \textbf{D}ual \textbf{A}ssignment} for end-to-end fully convolutional de\textbf{TE}ction (DATE). Our method constructs two branches with one-to-many and one-to-one assignment during training and…

Such multi-parameter MRI information has been shown to improve radiologist performance in lesion classification, as well as improving the performance of artificial intelligence models in various tasks. However, obtaining multi-parameter MRI makes the examination costly in both financial and time perspectives, and there may be safety concerns for special populations, thus making acquisition of the full spectrum …

To address this limitation, we propose a Vector-oriented Point Set Abstraction that can aggregate neighboring features through higher-dimensional vectors. The vulnerability to adversarial attacks has been a critical issue for deep neural networks. Addressing this issue requires a reliable way to evaluate the robustness of a network. Recently, several methods have been developed to compute $\textit{robustness quantification}$ for neural networks, namely, certified lower bounds of the minimum adversarial perturbation. Such methods, however, were devised for feed-forward networks, e.g. multi-layer perceptron or convolutional networks. It remains an open problem to quantify robustness for recurrent networks, especially LSTM and GRU. For such network…

Detecting irregular-shaped text instances is the main challenge for text detection. Existing approaches can be roughly divided into top-down and bottom-up perspective methods. The former encodes text contours into unified units, which always fails to fit highly curved text contours. The latter represents text instances by a number of local units, where the complicated network and post-processing lead to slow detection speed. In this paper, to detect arbitrary-shaped text instances with high detection accuracy and speed simultaneously, we propose a \textbf{Bi}directional \textbf{P}erspective st…
We present Convolutional Mean (CM) - a simple and fast convolutional neural network for illuminant estimation. Our proposed method only requires a small neural network model (1.1K parameters) and a 48 x 32 thumbnail input image. Our unoptimized Python implementation takes 1 ms/image, which is arguably 3-3750x faster than the current leading solutions with similar accuracy. Using two public datasets, we show that our proposed light-weight method offers accuracy comparable to the current leading methods' (which consist of thousands/millions of parameters) across several measures.

Optical flow, which expresses pixel displacement, is widely used in many computer vision tasks to provide pixel-level motion information. However, with the remarkable progress of the convolutional neural network, recent state-of-the-art approaches are proposed to solve problems directly on feature-level. Since the displacement of feature vector is not consistent to the pixel displacement, a common approach is to:forward optical flow to a neural network and fine-tune this network on the task dataset. With this method, they expect the fine-tuned network to produce tensors encoding feature-level m…

In this paper, we propose a deep neural network architecture for object recognition based on recurrent neural networks. The proposed network, called ReNet, replaces the ubiquitous convolution+pooling layer of the deep convolutional neural network with four recurrent neural networks that sweep horizontally and vertically in both directions across the image. We evaluate the proposed ReNet on three widely-used benchmark datasets; MNIST, CIFAR-10 and SVHN. The result suggests that ReNet is a viable alternative to the deep convolutional neural network, and that further investigation is needed.
Convolutional networks are powerful visual models that yield hierarchies of features. We show that convolutional networks by themselves, trained end-to-end, pixels-to-pixels, exceed the state-of-the-art in semantic segmentation. Our key insight is to build "fully convolutional" networks that take input of arbitrary size and produce correspondingly-sized output with efficient inference and learning. We define and detail the space of fully convolutional networks, explain their application to spatially dense prediction tasks, and draw connections to prior models. We adapt contemporary classificat…
