Music is a repetition of patterns and rhythms. It can be composed by repeating a certain number of bars in a structured way. In this paper, the objective is to generate a loop of 8 bars that can be used as a building block of music. Even considering musical diversity, we assume that music patterns familiar to humans can be defined in a finite set. With explicit rules to extract loops from music, we found that discrete representations are sufficient to model symbolic music sequences. Among VAE family, musical properties from VQ-VAE are better observed rather than other models. Further, to emphasize musical structure, we have manipulated discrete latent features to be repetitive so that the properties are more strengthened. Quantitative and qualitative experiments are extensively conducted to verify our assumptions.
In this article, we present musicaiz, an object-oriented library for analyzing, generating and evaluating symbolic music. The submodules of the package allow the user to create symbolic music data from scratch, build algorithms to analyze symbolic music, encode MIDI data as tokens to train deep learning sequence models, modify existing music data and evaluate music generation systems. The evaluation submodule builds on previous work to objectively measure music generation systems and to be able to reproduce the results of music generation models. The library is publicly available online. We en…
Regional style in Chinese folk songs is a rich treasure that can be used for ethnic music creation and folk culture research. In this paper, we propose MG-VAE, a music generative model based on VAE (Variational Auto-Encoder) that is capable of capturing specific music style and generating novel tunes for Chinese folk songs (Min Ge) in a manipulatable way. Specifically, we disentangle the latent space of VAE into four parts in an adversarial training way to control the information of pitch and rhythm sequence, as well as of music style and content. In detail, two classifiers are used to separat…

The dominant approach for music representation learning involves the deep unsupervised model family variational autoencoder (VAE). However, most, if not all, viable attempts on this problem have largely been limited to monophonic music. Normally composed of richer modality and more complex musical structures, the polyphonic counterpart has yet to be addressed in the context of music representation learning. In this work, we propose the PianoTree VAE, a novel tree-structure extension upon VAE aiming to fit the polyphonic music learning. The experiments prove the validity of the PianoTree VAE vi…

Similar to colorization in computer vision, instrument separation is to assign instrument labels (e.g. piano, guitar...) to notes from unlabeled mixtures which contain only performance information. To address the problem, we adopt diffusion models and explicitly guide them to preserve consistency between mixtures and music. The quantitative results show that our proposed model can generate high-fidelity samples for multitrack symbolic music with creativity.

Most existing neural network models for music generation explore how to generate music bars, then directly splice the music bars into a song. However, these methods do not explore the relationship between the bars, and the connected song as a whole has no musical form structure and sense of musical direction. To address this issue, we propose a Multi-model Multi-task Hierarchical Conditional VAE-GAN (Variational Autoencoder-Generative adversarial networks) networks, named MIDI-Sandwich, which combines musical knowledge, such as musical form, tonic, and melodic motion. The MIDI-Sandwich has two…

Transformers and variational autoencoders (VAE) have been extensively employed for symbolic (e.g., MIDI) domain music generation. While the former boast an impressive capability in modeling long sequences, the latter allow users to willingly exert control over different parts (e.g., bars) of the music to be generated. In this paper, we are interested in bringing the two together to construct a single model that exhibits both strengths. The task is split into two steps. First, we equip Transformer decoders with the ability to accept segment-level, time-varying conditions during sequence generat…
We introduce MIDI-VAE, a neural network model based on Variational Autoencoders that is capable of handling polyphonic music with multiple instrument tracks, as well as modeling the dynamics of music by incorporating note durations and velocities. We show that MIDI-VAE can perform style transfer on symbolic music by automatically changing pitches, dynamics and instruments of a music piece from, e.g., a Classical to a Jazz style. We evaluate the efficacy of the style transfer by training separate style validation classifiers. Our model can also interpolate between short pieces of music, produce…

Definitive embeddings remain a fundamental challenge of computational musicology for symbolic music in deep learning today. Analogous to natural language, music can be modeled as a sequence of tokens. This motivates the majority of existing solutions to explore the utilization of word embedding models to build music embeddings. However, music differs from natural languages in two key aspects: (1) musical token is multi-faceted -- it comprises of pitch, rhythm and dynamics information; and (2) musical context is two-dimensional -- each musical token is dependent on both melodic and harmonic con…

Since most of music has repetitive structures from motifs to phrases, repeating musical ideas can be a basic operation for music composition. The basic block that we focus on is conceptualized as loops which are essential ingredients of music. Furthermore, meaningful note patterns can be formed in a finite space, so it is sufficient to represent them with combinations of discrete symbols as done in other domains. In this work, we propose symbolic music loop generation via learning discrete representations. We first extract loops from MIDI datasets using a loop detector and then learn an autore…
Symbolic music understanding, which refers to the understanding of music from the symbolic data (e.g., MIDI format, but not audio), covers many music applications such as genre classification, emotion classification, and music pieces matching. While good music representations are beneficial for these applications, the lack of training data hinders representation learning. Inspired by the success of pre-training models in natural language processing, in this paper, we develop MusicBERT, a large-scale pre-trained model for music understanding. To this end, we construct a large-scale symbolic mus…

Music generation has always been a hot topic. When discussing symbolic music, melody or harmonies are usually seen as the only generating targets. But in fact, playing techniques are also quite an important part of the music. In this paper, we discuss the playing techniques generation problem by seeing it as a tagging problem. We propose a model that can use both the current data and external knowledge. Experiments were carried out by applying the proposed model in Chinese bamboo flute music, and results show that our method can make generated music more lively.

Currently, almost all the multi-track music generation models use the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to build the generative model, while the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based models can not be applied in this task. In view of the above problem, this paper proposes a RNN-based Hierarchical Multi-modal Fusion Generation Variational Autoencoder (VAE) network, MIDI-Sandwich2, for multi-track symbolic music generation. Inspired by VQ-VAE2, MIDI-Sandwich2 expands the dimension of the original hierarchical model by using multiple independent Binary Variational Autoencoder (BVAE) models withou…
Variational Autoencoders(VAEs) have already achieved great results on image generation and recently made promising progress on music generation. However, the generation process is still quite difficult to control in the sense that the learned latent representations lack meaningful music semantics. It would be much more useful if people can modify certain music features, such as rhythm and pitch contour, via latent representations to test different composition ideas. In this paper, we propose a new method to inspect the pitch and rhythm interpretations of the latent representations and we name …
Computational aesthetics evaluation has made great achievements in the field of visual arts, but the research work on music still needs to be explored. Although the existing work of music generation is very substantial, the quality of music score generated by AI is relatively poor compared with that created by human composers. The music scores created by AI are usually monotonous and devoid of emotion. Based on Birkhoff's aesthetic measure, this paper proposes an objective quantitative evaluation method for homophony music score aesthetic quality assessment. The main contributions of our work …
Automatic Chord Estimation (ACE) is a fundamental task in Music Information Retrieval (MIR) and has applications in both music performance and MIR research. The task consists of segmenting a music recording or score and assigning a chord label to each segment. Although it has been a task in the annual benchmarking evaluation MIREX for over 10 years, ACE is not yet a solved problem, since performance has stagnated and modern systems have started to tune themselves to subjective training data. We propose DECIBEL, a new ACE system that exploits widely available MIDI and tab representations to imp…

Symbolic Music Emotion Recognition(SMER) is to predict music emotion from symbolic data, such as MIDI and MusicXML. Previous work mainly focused on learning better representation via (mask) language model pre-training but ignored the intrinsic structure of the music, which is extremely important to the emotional expression of music. In this paper, we present a simple multi-task framework for SMER, which incorporates the emotion recognition task with other emotion-related auxiliary tasks derived from the intrinsic structure of the music. The results show that our multi-task framework can be ada…
Partitura is a lightweight Python package for handling symbolic musical information. It provides easy access to features commonly used in music information retrieval tasks, like note arrays (lists of timed pitched events) and 2D piano roll matrices, as well as other score elements such as time and key signatures, performance directives, and repeat structures. Partitura can load musical scores (in MEI, MusicXML, Kern, and MIDI formats), MIDI performances, and score-to-performance alignments. The package includes some tools for music analysis, such as automatic pitch spelling, key signature iden…

Many music theoretical constructs (such as scale types, modes, cadences, and chord types) are defined in terms of pitch intervals---relative distances between pitches. Therefore, when computer models are employed in music tasks, it can be useful to operate on interval representations rather than on the raw musical surface. Moreover, interval representations are transposition-invariant, valuable for tasks like audio alignment, cover song detection and music structure analysis. We employ a gated autoencoder to learn fixed-length, invertible and transposition-invariant interval representations fr…
Modelling human perception of musical similarity is critical for the evaluation of generative music systems, musicological research, and many Music Information Retrieval tasks. Although human similarity judgments are the gold standard, computational analysis is often preferable, since results are often easier to reproduce, and computational methods are much more scalable. Moreover, computation based approaches can be calculated quickly and on demand, which is a prerequisite for use with an online system. We propose StyleRank, a method to measure the similarity between a MIDI file and an arbitr…

Music Structure Analysis is an open research task in Music Information Retrieval (MIR). In the past, there have been several works that attempt to segment music into the audio and symbolic domains, however, the identification and segmentation of the music structure at different levels is still an open research problem in this area. In this work we propose three methods, two of which are novel graph-based algorithms that aim to segment symbolic music by its form or structure: Norm, G-PELT and G-Window. We performed an ablation study with two public datasets that have different forms or structur…
