We consider the problem of testing for long-range dependence in time-varying coefficient regression models, where the covariates and errors are locally stationary, allowing complex temporal dynamics and heteroscedasticity. We develop KPSS, R/S, V/S, and K/S-type statistics based on the nonparametric residuals. Under the null hypothesis, the local alternatives as well as the fixed alternatives, we derive the limiting distributions of the test statistics. As the four types of test statistics could degenerate when the time-varying mean, variance, long-run variance of errors, covariates, and the intercept lie in certain hyperplanes, we show the bootstrap-assisted tests are consistent under both degenerate and non-degenerate scenarios. In particular, in the presence of covariates the exact local asymptotic power of the bootstrap-assisted tests can enjoy the same order as that of the classical KPSS test of long memory for strictly stationary series. The asymptotic theory is built on a new Gaussian approximation technique for locally stationary long-memory processes with short-memory covariates, which is of independent interest. The effectiveness of our tests is demonstrated by extensive simulation studies and real data analysis.
In this paper, an estimator of $m$ instants ($m$ is known) of abrupt changes of the parameter of long-range dependence or self-similarity is proved to satisfy a limit theorem with an explicit convergence rate for a sample of a Gaussian process. In each estimated zone where the parameter is supposed not to change, a central limit theorem is established for the parameter's (of long-range dependence, self-similarity) estimator and a goodness-of-fit test is also built. {\it To cite this article: J.M. In this paper, we develop a complete methodology for detecting time-varying/non time-varying parameters in ARCH processes. For this purpose, we estimate and test various semiparametric versions of the time-varying ARCH model (tv-ARCH) which include two well known non stationary ARCH type models introduced in the econometric literature. Using kernel estimation, we show that non time-varying parameters can be estimated at the usual parametric rate of convergence and for a Gaussian noise, we construct estimates that are asymptotically efficient in a semiparametric sense. Then we introduce two sta…
In environmental sciences, it is often of interest to assess whether the dependence between extreme measurements has changed during the observation period. The aim of this work is to propose a statistical test that is particularly sensitive to such changes. The resulting procedure is also extended to allow the detection of changes in the extreme-value dependence under the presence of known breaks in the marginal distributions. Simulations are carried out to study the finite-sample behavior of both versions of the proposed test. Illustrations on hydrological data sets conclude the work.
The aim of this paper is first the detection of multiple abrupt changes of the long-range dependence (respectively self-similarity, local fractality) parameters from a sample of a Gaussian stationary times series (respectively time series, continuous-time process having stationary increments). The estimator of the $m$ change instants (the number $m$ is supposed to be known) is proved to satisfied a limit theorem with an explicit convergence rate. Moreover, a central limit theorem is established for an estimator of each long-range dependence (respectively self-similarity, local fractality) para…
In this paper, the estimation of parameters in the harmonic regression with cyclically dependent errors is addressed. Asymptotic properties of the least-squares estimates are analyzed by simulation experiments. By numerical simulation, we prove that consistency and asymptotic normality of the least-squares parameter estimator studied holds under different scenarios, where theoretical results do not exist, and have yet to be proven. In particular, these two asymptotic properties are shown by simulations for the least-squares parameter estimator in the non-linear regression model analyzed, when …
The detection of serial dependence in binary or binomial valued time series is difficult using standard time series methods, particularly when there are regression effects to be modelled. In this paper we derive score-type tests for detecting departures from independence in the directions of the GLARMA\ and BARMA\ type observation driven models. These score tests can easily be applied using a standard logistic regression and so may have appeal to practitioners who wish to initially assess the need to incorporate serial dependence effects. To deal with the nuisance parameters in some GLARMA mod…
Classical and more recent tests for detecting distributional changes in multivariate time series often lack power against alternatives that involve changes in the cross-sectional dependence structure. To be able to detect such changes better, a test is introduced based on a recently studied variant of the sequential empirical copula process. In contrast to earlier attempts, ranks are computed with respect to relevant subsamples, with beneficial consequences for the sensitivity of the test. For the computation of p-values we propose a multiplier resampling scheme that takes the serial dependenc…
An important problem in time series analysis is the discrimination between non-stationarity and longrange dependence. Most of the literature considers the problem of testing specific parametric hypotheses of non-stationarity (such as a change in the mean) against long-range dependent stationary alternatives. In this paper we suggest a simple approach, which can be used to test the null-hypothesis of a general non-stationary short-memory against the alternative of a non-stationary long-memory process. The test procedure works in the spectral domain and uses a sequence of approximating tvFARIMA …
Distance covariance is a quantity to measure the dependence of two random vectors. We show that the original concept introduced and developed by Székely, Rizzo and Bakirov can be embedded into a more general framework based on symmetric Lévy measures and the corresponding real-valued continuous negative definite functions. The Lévy measures replace the weight functions used in the original definition of distance covariance. All essential properties of distance covariance are preserved in this new framework. From a practical point of view this allows less restrictive moment conditions on the un…
We consider a sparse high-dimensional varying coefficients model with random effects, a flexible linear model allowing covariates and coefficients to have a functional dependence with time. For each individual, we observe discretely sampled responses and covariates as a function of time as well as time invariant covariates. Under sampling times that are either fixed and common or random and independent amongst individuals, we propose a projection procedure for the empirical estimation of all varying coefficients. We extend this estimator to construct confidence bands for a fixed number of vary…
Classical moment based change point tests like the cusum test are very powerful in case of Gaussian time series with one change point but behave poorly under heavy tailed distributions and corrupted data. A new class of robust change point tests based on cusum statistics of robustly transformed observations is proposed. This framework is quite flexible, depending on the used transformation one can detect for instance changes in the mean, scale or dependence of a possibly multivariate time series. Simulations indicate that this approach is very powerful in detecting changes in the marginal vari…
We propose a new asymptotic test to assess the stationarity of a time series' mean that is applicable in the presence of both heteroscedasticity and short-range dependence. Our test statistic is composed of Gini's mean difference of local sample means. To analyse its asymptotic behaviour, we develop new limit theory for U-statistics of strongly mixing triangular arrays under non-stationarity. Most importantly, we show asymptotic normality of the test statistic under the hypothesis of a constant mean and prove the test's consistency against a very general class of alternatives, including both s…
The local Hurst exponent, a measure employed to detect the presence of dependence in a time series, may also be used to investigate the source of intraday variation observed in the returns in foreign exchange markets. Given that changes in the local Hurst exponent may be due to either a time-varying range, or standard deviation, or both of these simultaneously, values for the range, standard deviation and local Hurst exponent are recorded and analyzed separately. To illustrate this approach, a high-frequency data set of the spot Australian dollar/U.S. dollar provides evidence of the returns di…
In this article we review existing literature on dynamic copulas and then propose an n-copula which varies in time and space. Our approach makes use of stochastic differential equations, and gives rise to a dynamic copula which is able to capture the dependence between multiple Markov diffusion processes. This model is suitable for pricing basket derivatives in finance and may also be applicable to other areas such as bioinformatics and environmental science.
