Visually-grounded spoken language datasets can enable models to learn cross-modal correspondences with very weak supervision. However, modern audio-visual datasets contain biases that undermine the real-world performance of models trained on that data. We introduce Spoken ObjectNet, which is designed to remove some of these biases and provide a way to better evaluate how effectively models will perform in real-world scenarios. This dataset expands upon ObjectNet, which is a bias-controlled image dataset that features similar image classes to those present in ImageNet. We detail our data collection pipeline, which features several methods to improve caption quality, including automated language model checks. Lastly, we show baseline results on image retrieval and audio retrieval tasks. These results show that models trained on other datasets and then evaluated on Spoken ObjectNet tend to perform poorly due to biases in other datasets that the models have learned. We also show evidence that the performance decrease is due to the dataset controls, and not the transfer setting.
This paper presents an augmentation of MSCOCO dataset where speech is added to image and text. Speech captions are generated using text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis resulting in 616,767 spoken captions (more than 600h) paired with images. Disfluencies and speed perturbation are added to the signal in order to sound more natural. Each speech signal (WAV) is paired with a JSON file containing exact timecode for each word/syllable/phoneme in the spoken caption. Such a corpus could be used for Language and Vision (LaVi) tasks including speech input or output instead of text. Investigating multimodal …
When people observe events, they are able to abstract key information and build concise summaries of what is happening. These summaries include contextual and semantic information describing the important high-level details (what, where, who and how) of the observed event and exclude background information that is deemed unimportant to the observer. With this in mind, the descriptions people generate for videos of different dynamic events can greatly improve our understanding of the key information of interest in each video. These descriptions can be captured in captions that provide expanded …
Research in massively multilingual image captioning has been severely hampered by a lack of high-quality evaluation datasets. In this paper we present the Crossmodal-3600 dataset (XM3600 in short), a geographically diverse set of 3600 images annotated with human-generated reference captions in 36 languages. The images were selected from across the world, covering regions where the 36 languages are spoken, and annotated with captions that achieve consistency in terms of style across all languages, while avoiding annotation artifacts due to direct translation. We apply this benchmark to model se…
Lecture slide presentations, a sequence of pages that contain text and figures accompanied by speech, are constructed and presented carefully in order to optimally transfer knowledge to students. Previous studies in multimedia and psychology attribute the effectiveness of lecture presentations to their multimodal nature. As a step toward developing AI to aid in student learning as intelligent teacher assistants, we introduce the Multimodal Lecture Presentations dataset as a large-scale benchmark testing the capabilities of machine learning models in multimodal understanding of educational cont…

In this paper we present the first model for directly synthesizing fluent, natural-sounding spoken audio captions for images that does not require natural language text as an intermediate representation or source of supervision. Instead, we connect the image captioning module and the speech synthesis module with a set of discrete, sub-word speech units that are discovered with a self-supervised visual grounding task. We conduct experiments on the Flickr8k spoken caption dataset in addition to a novel corpus of spoken audio captions collected for the popular MSCOCO dataset, demonstrating that o…

The objective of this work is to explore the learning of visually grounded speech models (VGS) from multilingual perspective. Bilingual VGS models are generally trained with an equal number of spoken captions from both languages. However, in reality, there can be an imbalance among the languages for the available spoken captions. Our key contribution in this work is to leverage the power of a high-resource language in a bilingual visually grounded speech model to improve the performance of a low-resource language. We introduce two methods to distill the knowledge of high-resource language into…

In this work, we propose an effective approach for training unique embedding representations by combining three simultaneous modalities: image and spoken and textual narratives. The proposed methodology departs from a baseline system that spawns a embedding space trained with only spoken narratives and image cues. Our experiments on the EPIC-Kitchen and Places Audio Caption datasets show that introducing the human-generated textual transcriptions of the spoken narratives helps to the training procedure yielding to get better embedding representations. The triad speech, image and words allows f…

During language acquisition, infants have the benefit of visual cues to ground spoken language. Robots similarly have access to audio and visual sensors. Recent work has shown that images and spoken captions can be mapped into a meaningful common space, allowing images to be retrieved using speech and vice versa. In this setting of images paired with untranscribed spoken captions, we consider whether computer vision systems can be used to obtain textual labels for the speech. Concretely, we use an image-to-words multi-label visual classifier to tag images with soft textual labels, and then tra…

In this paper, we present a model which takes as input a corpus of images with relevant spoken captions and finds a correspondence between the two modalities. We employ a pair of convolutional neural networks to model visual objects and speech signals at the word level, and tie the networks together with an embedding and alignment model which learns a joint semantic space over both modalities. We evaluate our model using image search and annotation tasks on the Flickr8k dataset, which we augmented by collecting a corpus of 40,000 spoken captions using Amazon Mechanical Turk.
Motivated by a project to create a system for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing that would use automatic speech recognition (ASR) to produce real-time text captions of spoken English during in-person meetings with hearing individuals, we have augmented a transcript of the Switchboard conversational dialogue corpus with an overlay of word-importance annotations, with a numeric score for each word, to indicate its importance to the meaning of each dialogue turn. Further, we demonstrate the utility of this corpus by training an automatic word importance labeling model; our best performing mo…
In this paper, we explore neural network models that learn to associate segments of spoken audio captions with the semantically relevant portions of natural images that they refer to. We demonstrate that these audio-visual associative localizations emerge from network-internal representations learned as a by-product of training to perform an image-audio retrieval task. Our models operate directly on the image pixels and speech waveform, and do not rely on any conventional supervision in the form of labels, segmentations, or alignments between the modalities during training. We perform analysis…

Image2Speech is the relatively new task of generating a spoken description of an image. This paper presents an investigation into the evaluation of this task. For this, first an Image2Speech system was implemented which generates image captions consisting of phoneme sequences. This system outperformed the original Image2Speech system on the Flickr8k corpus. Subsequently, these phoneme captions were converted into sentences of words. The captions were rated by human evaluators for their goodness of describing the image. Finally, several objective metric scores of the results were correlated wit…

Given a collection of images and spoken audio captions, we present a method for discovering word-like acoustic units in the continuous speech signal and grounding them to semantically relevant image regions. For example, our model is able to detect spoken instances of the word 'lighthouse' within an utterance and associate them with image regions containing lighthouses. We do not use any form of conventional automatic speech recognition, nor do we use any text transcriptions or conventional linguistic annotations. Our model effectively implements a form of spoken language acquisition, in which…

Automatic image caption generation aims to produce an accurate description of an image in natural language automatically. However, Bangla, the fifth most widely spoken language in the world, is lagging considerably in the research and development of such domain. Besides, while there are many established data sets to related to image annotation in English, no such resource exists for Bangla yet. Hence, this paper outlines the development of "Chittron", an automatic image captioning system in Bangla. Moreover, to address the data set availability issue, a collection of 16,000 Bangladeshi context…

Systems that can associate images with their spoken audio captions are an important step towards visually grounded language learning. We describe a scalable method to automatically generate diverse audio for image captioning datasets. This supports pretraining deep networks for encoding both audio and images, which we do via a dual encoder that learns to align latent representations from both modalities. We show that a masked margin softmax loss for such models is superior to the standard triplet loss. We fine-tune these models on the Flickr8k Audio Captions Corpus and obtain state-of-the-art …

Visually grounded speech (VGS) models are trained on images paired with unlabelled spoken captions. Such models could be used to build speech systems in settings where it is impossible to get labelled data, e.g. for documenting unwritten languages. However, most VGS studies are in English or other high-resource languages. This paper attempts to address this shortcoming. We collect and release a new single-speaker dataset of audio captions for 6k Flickr images in Yorùbá -- a real low-resource language spoken in Nigeria. We train an attention-based VGS model where images are automatically tagged…
For spoken language translation (SLT) in live scenarios such as conferences, lectures and meetings, it is desirable to show the translation to the user as quickly as possible, avoiding an annoying lag between speaker and translated captions. In other words, we would like low-latency, online SLT. If we assume a pipeline of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and machine translation (MT) then a viable approach to online SLT is to pair an online ASR system, with a a retranslation strategy, where the MT system re-translates every update received from ASR. However this can result in annoying "flicke…
We investigate the problem of simultaneous machine translation of long-form speech content. We target a continuous speech-to-text scenario, generating translated captions for a live audio feed, such as a lecture or play-by-play commentary. As this scenario allows for revisions to our incremental translations, we adopt a re-translation approach to simultaneous translation, where the source is repeatedly translated from scratch as it grows. This approach naturally exhibits very low latency and high final quality, but at the cost of incremental instability as the output is continuously refined. W…
Recent advancements in deep learning have created many opportunities to solve real-world problems that remained unsolved for more than a decade. Automatic caption generation is a major research field, and the research community has done a lot of work on it in most common languages like English. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and also much spoken and understood in the sub-continent region of Pakistan-India, and yet no work has been done for Urdu language caption generation. Our research aims to fill this gap by developing an attention-based deep learning model using techniques of seq…

In this paper, we explore self-supervised audio-visual models that learn from instructional videos. Prior work has shown that these models can relate spoken words and sounds to visual content after training on a large-scale dataset of videos, but they were only trained and evaluated on videos in English. To learn multilingual audio-visual representations, we propose a cascaded approach that leverages a model trained on English videos and applies it to audio-visual data in other languages, such as Japanese videos. With our cascaded approach, we show an improvement in retrieval performance of ne…

Spoken language translation (SLT) is becoming more important in the increasingly globalized world, both from a social and economic point of view. It is one of the major challenges for automatic speech recognition (ASR) and machine translation (MT), driving intense research activities in these areas. While past research in SLT, due to technology limitations, dealt mostly with speech recorded under controlled conditions, today's major challenge is the translation of spoken language as it can be found in real life. Considered application scenarios range from portable translators for tourists, lec…
This study addresses the question whether visually grounded speech recognition (VGS) models learn to capture sentence semantics without access to any prior linguistic knowledge. We produce synthetic and natural spoken versions of a well known semantic textual similarity database and show that our VGS model produces embeddings that correlate well with human semantic similarity judgements. Our results show that a model trained on a small image-caption database outperforms two models trained on much larger databases, indicating that database size is not all that matters. We also investigate the i…

Data-driven speech processing models usually perform well with a large amount of text supervision, but collecting transcribed speech data is costly. Therefore, we propose SpeechCLIP, a novel framework bridging speech and text through images to enhance speech models without transcriptions. We leverage state-of-the-art pre-trained HuBERT and CLIP, aligning them via paired images and spoken captions with minimal fine-tuning. SpeechCLIP outperforms prior state-of-the-art on image-speech retrieval and performs zero-shot speech-text retrieval without direct supervision from transcriptions. Moreover,…

Multimodal machine translation involves drawing information from more than one modality, based on the assumption that the additional modalities will contain useful alternative views of the input data. The most prominent tasks in this area are spoken language translation, image-guided translation, and video-guided translation, which exploit audio and visual modalities, respectively. These tasks are distinguished from their monolingual counterparts of speech recognition, image captioning, and video captioning by the requirement of models to generate outputs in a different language. This survey r…
In this paper, we explore the learning of neural network embeddings for natural images and speech waveforms describing the content of those images. These embeddings are learned directly from the waveforms without the use of linguistic transcriptions or conventional speech recognition technology. While prior work has investigated this setting in the monolingual case using English speech data, this work represents the first effort to apply these techniques to languages beyond English. Using spoken captions collected in English and Hindi, we show that the same model architecture can be successful…

Humans learn language by interaction with their environment and listening to other humans. It should also be possible for computational models to learn language directly from speech but so far most approaches require text. We improve on existing neural network approaches to create visually grounded embeddings for spoken utterances. Using a combination of a multi-layer GRU, importance sampling, cyclic learning rates, ensembling and vectorial self-attention our results show a remarkable increase in image-caption retrieval performance over previous work. Furthermore, we investigate which layers i…
