The reaction coordinate (RC) technique is emerging as a significant tool in the study of quantum dissipative dynamics and quantum thermodynamics. With the objective to further establish this tool, here we explore to what extent the method can capture non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems. As a case study, we focus on the pure decoherence model of a spin coupled to a harmonic reservoir. We compare the spin dynamics and measures for non-Markovianity from the exact analytical solution to simulations based on the RC method at the level of a second order quantum master equation. We find that the RC method can quantitatively capture non-Markovian effects at strong system-bath coupling and for structured baths. This is rationalized by the fact that the collective RC bath mode, which is made part of the system, maintains system-bath correlations. Lastly, we apply our RC method and study the spin-boson model in the non-Markovian regime.
With the rapid progress in quantum hardware, there has been an increased interest in new quantum algorithms to describe complex many-body systems searching for the still-elusive goal of 'useful quantum advantage'. Surprisingly, quantum algorithms for the treatment of open quantum systems (OQSs) have remained under-explored, in part due to the inherent challenges of mapping non-unitary evolution into the framework of unitary gates. Evolving an open system unitarily necessitates dilation into a new effective system to incorporate critical environmental degrees of freedom. In this context, we pre…
Capturing non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems is generally a challenging problem, especially for strongly-interacting many-body systems. In this work, we combine recently developed non-Markovian quantum state diffusion techniques with tensor network methods to address this challenge. As a first example, we explore a Hubbard-Holstein model with dissipative phonon modes, where this new approach allows us to quantitatively assess how correlations spread in the presence of non-Markovian dissipation in a 1D many-body system. We find regimes where correlation growth can be enhanced by the…
We study electron pumping in the strong coupling and non-Markovian regime. Our model is a single quantum dot with periodically modulated energy and tunnelling amplitudes. We identify four parameters to control the direction of the current: the driving phase, the coupling strength, the driving frequency and the location of the maxima of the spectral density. In the high-frequency regime, we use a Markovian embedding strategy to map our model to three serial quantum dots weakly coupled to the reservoirs allowing us to use a Floquet master equation. We observe a rectification effect of the pumped…
We propose a method to study the thermodynamic behaviour of small systems beyond the weak coupling and Markovian approximation, which is different in spirit from conventional approaches. The idea is to redefine the system and environment such that the effective, redefined system is again coupled weakly to Markovian residual baths and thus, allows to derive a consistent thermodynamic framework for this new system-environment partition. To achieve this goal we make use of the reaction coordinate mapping, which is a general method in the sense that it can be applied to an arbitrary (quantum or cl…
Non-Markovian evolution in open quantum systems is often characterized in terms of the backflow of information from environment to system and is thus an important facet in investigating the performance and robustness of quantum information protocols. In this work, we explore non-Markovianity through the breakdown of monotonicity of a metrological figure of merit, called the quantum interferometric power, which is based on the minimal quantum Fisher information obtained by local unitary evolution of one part of the system, and can be interpreted as a quantifier of quantum correlations beyond en…
The non-Markovian dynamics of a charged particle linearly coupled to a neutral bosonic heat bath is investigated in an external uniform magnetic field. The analytical expressions for the time-dependent and asymptotic friction and diffusion coefficients, cyclotron frequencies, variances of the coordinate and momentum, and orbital magnetic moments are derived. The role of magnetic field in the dissipation and diffusion processes is illustrated by several examples in the low- and high-temperature regimes. The localization phenomenon for a charged particle is observed. The orbital diamagnetism of …

A precise understanding of the influence of a quantum system's environment on its dynamics, which is at the heart of the theory of open quantum systems, is crucial for further progress in the development of controllable large-scale quantum systems. However, existing approaches to account for complex system-environment interaction in the presence of memory effects are either based on heuristic and oversimplified principles or give rise to computational difficulties. In practice, one can leverage on available experimental data and replace first-principles simulations with a data-driven analysis …

We examine the Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in the context of non-Markovian dynamics in entangled spin-boson systems in contact with noninteracting reservoirs. We identify enhanced non-Markovian signatures in specific two-qubit partitions of a Bell-like initial state, with results showing that the intra-qubit Zeno effect or anti-Zeno effect occurs in conjunction with inter-qubit non-Markovian dynamics for a range of system parameters. The time domain of effective Zeno or anti-Zeno dynamics is about the same order of magnitude as the non-Markovian time scale of the reservoir correlation dynamics,…
We establish a theoretical method which goes beyond the weak coupling and Markovian approximations while remaining intuitive, using a quantum master equation in a larger Hilbert space. The method is applicable to all impurity Hamiltonians tunnel-coupled to one (or multiple) baths of free fermions. The accuracy of the method is in principle not limited by the system-bath coupling strength, but rather by the shape of the spectral density and it is especially suited to study situations far away from the wide-band limit. In analogy to the bosonic case, we call it the fermionic reaction coordinate …
We study qubit decoherence under generalized dispersive readout, i.e., we investigate a qubit coupled to a resonantly driven dissipative harmonic oscillator. We provide a complete picture by allowing for arbitrarily large qubit-oscillator detuning and by considering also a coupling to the square of the oscillator coordinate, which is relevant for flux qubits. Analytical results for the decoherence time are obtained by a transformation of the qubit-oscillator Hamiltonian to the dispersive frame and a subsequent master equation treatment beyond the Markov limit. We predict a crossover from Marko…
When a quantum system couples strongly to multiple baths then it is generally no longer possible to describe the resulting system dynamics by simply adding the individual effects of each bath. However, capturing such multi-bath system dynamics has up to now required approximations that can obscure some of the non-additive effects. Here we present a numerically-exact and efficient technique for tackling this problem that builds on the time-evolving matrix product operator (TEMPO) representation. We test the method by applying it to a simple model system that exhibits non-additive behaviour: a t…
We study the dynamics of a transmon qubit that is capacitively coupled to an open multimode superconducting resonator. Our effective equations are derived by eliminating resonator degrees of freedom while encoding their effect in the Green's function of the electromagnetic background. We account for the dissipation of the resonator exactly by employing a spectral representation for the Green's function in terms of a set of non-Hermitian modes and show that it is possible to derive effective Heisenberg-Langevin equations without resorting to the rotating wave, two level or Markov approximations…

The paradigmatic spin-boson model considers a spin degree of freedom interacting with an environment typically constituted by a continuum of bosonic modes. This ubiquitous model is of relevance in a number of physical systems where, in general, one has neither control over the bosonic modes, nor the ability to tune distinct interaction mechanisms. Despite this apparent lack of control, we present a suitable transformation that approximately maps the spin-boson dynamics into that of a tunable multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model undergoing dissipation. Interestingly, the latter model describes the…

We present an overview of the reaction coordinate approach to handling strong system-reservoir interactions in quantum thermodynamics. This technique is based on incorporating a collective degree of freedom of the reservoir (the reaction coordinate) into an enlarged system Hamiltonian (the supersystem), which is then treated explicitly. The remaining residual reservoir degrees of freedom are traced out in the usual perturbative manner. The resulting description accurately accounts for strong system-reservoir coupling and/or non-Markovian effects over a wide range of parameters, including regim…
Modeling the non-equilibrium dissipative dynamics of strongly interacting quantized degrees of freedom is a fundamental problem in several branches of physics and chemistry. We implement a quantum state trajectory scheme for solving Lindblad quantum master equations that describe coherent and dissipative processes for a set of strongly-coupled quantized oscillators. The scheme involves a sequence of stochastic quantum jumps with transition probabilities determined the system state and the system-reservoir dynamics. Between consecutive jumps, the wavefunction is propagated in coordinate space u…

The theory of hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) is one of the standard methods to give exact evaluations of the dynamics as coupled to harmonic oscillator environments. However, the theory is numerically demanding due to its hierarchy, which is the set of auxiliary elements introduced to capture the non-Markovian and non-perturbative effects of environments. When system-bath coupling becomes relatively strong, the required computational resources and precision move beyond the regime that can be currently handled. This article presents a new representation of HEOM theory in which the hier…
We study a model of a thermoelectric nanojunction driven by vibrationally-assisted tunneling. We apply the reaction coordinate formalism to derive a master equation governing its thermoelectric performance beyond the weak electron-vibrational coupling limit. Employing full counting statistics we calculate the current flow, thermopower, associated noise, and efficiency without resorting to the weak vibrational coupling approximation. We demonstrate intricacies of the power-efficiency-precision trade-off at strong coupling, showing that the three cannot be maximised simultaneously in our model. …
Currents through quantum systems may probe non-analyticities in quantum-critical many-body ground states. For a large class of dissipative quantum critical systems we show that it is possible to obtain the reduced system dynamics in the vicinity of quantum critical points in a thermodynamically consistent way, while capturing non-Markovian effects. We achieve this by combining reaction coordinate mappings with polaron transforms. Exemplarily, we consider the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model in a transport setup, where the quantum phase transition manifests itself in the heat transfer statistics.
Developing accurate and computationally inexpensive models for the dynamics of open-quantum systems is critical in designing new qubit platforms by first understanding their mechanisms of decoherence and dephasing. Current models based on solutions to master equations are not sufficient in capturing the non-Markovian dynamics at play and suffer from large computational costs. Here, we present a method of overcoming this by using a recurrent neural network to obtain effective solutions to the Lindblad master equation for a coupled transmon qubit-cavity system. We present the training and testin…
We present a semi-analytical approach for studying quantum thermal energy transport beyond the weak system-bath coupling regime. Our treatment, which results in a renormalized, effective Hamiltonian model is based on the reaction coordinate method. In our technique, applied to the nonequilibrium spin-boson model, a collective coordinate is extracted from each environment and added into the system to construct an enlarged system. After performing additional Hamiltonian's truncation and transformation, we attain an effective two-level system with renormalized parameters, which is weakly coupled …
We explore excitonic energy transfer dynamics in a molecular dimer system coupled to both structured and unstructured oscillator environments. By extending the reaction coordinate master equation technique developed in [J. Iles-Smith, N. Lambert, and A. Nazir, Phys. Rev. A 90, 032114 (2014)], we go beyond the commonly used Born-Markov approximations to incorporate system-environment correlations and the resultant non-Markovian dynamical effects. We obtain energy transfer dynamics for both underdamped and overdamped oscillator environments that are in perfect agreement with the numerical hierar…
