The magnetic relaxation characteristics are investigated in the two-dimensional ($l^{}_x\times l^{}_y$) assembly of nanoparticles as a function of out-of-plane positional disorder strength $Δ(\%)$ using numerical simulations. Such defects are redundantly observed in experimentally fabricated nanostructures, resulting in unusual magnetization dynamics. The magnetization decays exponentially for small and negligible dipolar interaction strength $h^{}_d\leq0.2$. In such a case, the magnetization relaxation does not depend on $Δ$ and aspect ratio $A^{}_r=l^{}_y/l^{}_x$, as expected. In square-like MNPs ensembles and perfectly ordered system ($Δ(\%)=0$), the magnetization relaxes rapidly with an increase in $h^{}_d$. Consequently, the effective Néel relaxation time $τ^{}_N$ decreases with $h^{}_d$. The dipolar interaction of sufficient strength promotes antiferromagnetic coupling in such a system, resulting in rapid magnetization decay. Remarkably, the out-of-plane disorder instigates the magnetic moment to interact ferromagnetically in the presence of large $h^{}_d$, even in the square-like assembly of MNPs. As a result, magnetization relaxation slows down, resulting in a monotonous increase of $τ^{}_N$ with an increase in $Δ$ and $h^{}_d$ in such cases. Notably, there is a prolonged magnetization decay in the highly anisotropic system with large $h^{}_d$. The dipolar interaction induces ferromagnetic coupling along the long axis of the system in such cases. Therefore, the magnetization ceases to relax as a function of time for large $h^{}_d$, irrespective of disorder strength $Δ(\%)$. The present work could provide a concrete theoretical basis to explain the unexpected relaxation behaviour observed in experiments. These results are also beneficial in digital data storage and spintronics based applications where such nanostructures are extensively used.
Iron oxide nanoparticles have tremendous scientific and technological potential in a broad range of technologies, from energy applications to biomedicine. To improve their performance, single-crystalline and defect-free nanoparticles have thus far been aspired. However, in several recent studies defect-rich nanoparticles outperform their defect-free counterparts in magnetic hyperthermia and magnetic particle imaging. Here, an overview on the state-of-the-art of design and characterization of defects and resulting spin disorder in magnetic nanoparticles is presented with a focus on iron oxide n…

Homogeneous single phase GdCrO3 nanoparticles are synthesized by a modified-hydrothermal synthesis. The sample shows a compensation temperature at 128 K, below which the DC magnetization becomes negative and positive at low temperatures due to the competition between the two sublattice magnetization. At Néel temperature (168K), the line width and the intensity show an abrupt transition, revealed from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.
The combination of high sensitive superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with high quality nanoparticles allowed to check the simplest classical model describing the magnetisation reversal by uniform rotation which were proposed more than 50 years ago by Neel, Stoner and Wohlfarth. The micrometer sized SQUIDs were elaborated by electron beam lithography and the nanoparticles were synthesised by arc-discharge. The measured angular dependence of switching fields of nearly all f.c.c. Co nanoparticles revealed a dominating uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. This result suggests that twin b…
Magnetization reversal of individual, isolated high-aspect-ratio Fe nanoparticles with diameters comparable to the magnetic exchange length is studied by high-sensitivity submicron Hall magnetometry. For a Fe nanoparticle with diameter of 5 nm, the magnetization reversal is found to be an incoherent process with localized nucleation assisted by thermal activation, even though the particle has a single-domain static state. For a larger elongated Fe nanoparticle with a diameter greater than 10 nm, the inhomogeneous magnetic structure of the particle plays important role in the reversal process.
We report on the effect of organic acid capping on the behavior of magnetite nanoparticles. The nanoparticles of magnetite were obtained using microwave activated process, and the magnetic properties as well as the electron magnetic resonance behavior were studied for the Fe3O4 nanoparticles capped with alginic acid. The capped nanoparticles exhibit improved crystalline structure of the surface which leads to an enhanced magnetization. The saturation magnetization Ms increases to ~75% of the bulk magnetization. The improved structure also facilitates quantization of spin-wave spectrum in the f…
Microscopic description of Raman spectra in nanopowders of nonpolar crystals is accomplished by developing the theory of disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes. Analytical treatment of this problem is performed, and line shape and width are determined as functions of phonon quantum numbers, nanoparticle shape, size, and the strength of disorder. The results are found to be strongly dependent on either the broadened line is separated or it is overlapped with other lines of the spectrum. Three models of disorder, i.e. weak point-like impurities, weak smooth random potentia…
A temperature dependent coherent magnetization reversal model is proposed for size-distributed assemblies of ferromagnetic nanoparticles and ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic core-shell nanoparticles. The nanoparticles are assumed to be of uniaxial anisotropy and all aligned along their easy axis. The thermal dependence is included by considering thermal fluctuations, implemented via the Néel-Arrhenius theory. Thermal and angular dependence of magnetization reversal loops, coercive field and exchange-bias field are obtained, showing that F-AF size-distributed exchange-coupled nanoparticles exhib…
The finite size and surface roughness effects on the magnetization of NiO nanoparticles is investigated. A large magnetic moment arises for an antiferromagnetic nanoparticle due to these effects. The magnetic moment without the surface roughness has a non-monotonic and oscillatory dependence on $R$, the size of the particles, with the amplitude of the fluctuations varying linearly with $R$. The geometry of the particle also matters a lot in the calculation of the net magnetic moment. An oblate spheroid shape particle shows an increase in net magnetic moment by increasing oblateness of the part…
Optical phonons in nanoparticles with the randomness of interatomic bonds are considered both analytically and numerically. For weak dilute disorder two qualitatively different regimes of separated and overlapped levels are observed, resembling the case of random atomic masses investigated previously. At stronger and/or more dense disorder, the particles become essentially inhomogeneous, thus constituting the minimal model to describe an amorphous phase, where the picture of vibrational modes becomes more subtle. We concentrate here on the experimentally relevant case of strong disorder locate…
The magnetic properties of densely packed magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) assemblies are investigated from Monte Carlo simulations. The case of iron oxide nanoparticles is considered as a typical example of MNP. The main focus is put on particle size and size polydispersity influences on the magnetization curve. The particles are modeled as uniformly magnetized spheres isolated one from each other by a non magnetic layer representing the organic coating. A comparison with recent experimental results on $γ-$Fe$_2$O$_3$ powder samples differing by their size is given.

We have synthesized the bulk form of the superparamagnetic nanocomposites of Fe nanoparticles and activated carbon. Here highly porous feature of activated carbon and magnetic properties of Fe nanoparticles were combined together to form the nanocomposites by mechanical mixing of different proportion of both of them. These nanocomposites are characterized by various characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), magnetization measurement and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The observed XRD patterns have shown most intense peaks at 2θ = 44.8 degree, wh…
The influence of surface anisotropy on the magnetization processes of maghemite nanoparticles with ellipsoidal shape is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Radial surface anisotropy is found to favor the formation of hedgehog-like spin structures that become more stable as the surface anisotropy constant at the surface $k_S$ is increased form the value at the core. We have studied the change in the low temperature hysteresis loops with the particle aspect ratio and with $k_S$, finding a change in the magnetization reversal mode as $k_S$ or the particle elongation is increased.
Ultrafast demagnetization in magnetic nanoparticles using pulsed laser has attracted considerable attention because of its potential applications in spintronics, such as data storage. In such applications, it is necessary to control magnetization using low energy laser pulses, however, this poses the problem of increasing the amount of energy from the excitation laser pulses to the spin subsystem. We take advantage of the phenomenon known as localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) to enhance the energy transfer from laser pulses to the spin subsystem. To induce LSPR, hybrid nanoparticles co…
When decreasing the size of nanoscale magnetic particles their magnetization becomes vulnerable to thermal fluctuations as approaching the superparamgnetic limit, hindering thus applications relying on a stable magnetization. Here, we show theoretically that a magnetoelectric coupling to a ferroelectric substrate renders possible the realization of substantially smaller nano clusters with thermally stable magnetization. For an estimate of cluster size we perform calculations with realistic material parameters for iron nano particles on ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate. We find, steering the pola…
There is so far no clear-cut experimental analysis that can determine whether dipole-dipole interactions enhance or reduce the blocking temperature $T_{B}$ of nanoparticle assemblies. It seems that the samples play a central role in the problem and therefore, their geometry should most likely be the key factor in this issue. Yet, in a previous work, Jönsson and Garcia-Palacios did investigate theoretically this problem in a weak-interaction limit and without the presence of an external DC field. Based on symmetry arguments they reached the conclusion that the variation of the relaxation rate i…
We perform molecular dynamic simulations of liquid nanoparticles deposited on a disordered substrate. The motion of the nanoparticle is characterised by a 'stick and roll' diffusive process. Long simulation times ($\simeq μs$), analysis of mean square displacements and stacking time distribution functions demonstrate that the nanoparticle undergoes a normal diffusion in spite of long sticking times. We propose a phenomenological model for the size and temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient in which the activation energy scales as $N^{1/3}$.
The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of a hexagonal array of dipolar coupled anisotropic magnetic nanoparticles is studied using a resistor network model and a realistic micromagnetic configuration obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of the field-dependent TMR and the corresponding magnetization curve shows that dipolar interactions suppress the maximum TMR effect, increase or decrease the field-sensitivity depending on the direction of applied field and introduce strong dependence of the TMR on the direction of the applied magnetic field. For off-plane magnetic fields, maximum valu…
BiFe1-xCrxO3 (x=0.0, 0.05 and 0.1) nanoparticles are prepared by a combustion method without using any solvent. All the synthesized nanoparticles are single phase in nature, nearly spherical in shape and crystallize in distorted perovskite structure and space group R3c with an average crystallite size of the order of 40 nm. The room temperature magnetization observed in BiFeO3 nanoparticles is larger than that in the bulk. Increasing Cr doping leads to increase in the magnetization and coercivity. Strong superexchange interaction between Fe3+ and Cr3+ atoms is likely to give rise to such incre…
Magnetization reversal in magnetic nanostructures is investigated numerically over time-scales ranging from fast switching processes on a picosecond scale to thermally activated reversal on a microsecond time-scale. A simulation of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz equation of motion is used as well as a time quantified Monte Carlo method for the simulation of classical spin systems modeling magnetic Co nanoparticles. For field pulses larger than the Stoner-Wohlfarth limit spin precession effects govern the reversal behavior of the particle while for lower fields a magnetization reversal is only …
We investigate the effect of (weak) dipolar interactions on the field behavior of the temperature at the maximum of the zero-field-cooled magnetization of a polydisperse assembly of nanoparticles. For this purpose, we extend the Gittleman-Abeles-Bozowski model for the zero-field-cooled magnetization by computing the contribution of dipolar interactions to the longitudinal relaxation time. We show, in good qualitative agreement with many experimental observations, that the temperature at the maximum of the zero-field-cooled magnetization as a function of the applied field changes from a bell-li…
We report the magnetic properties of magnetic nano-composite, consisting of different quantity of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles in polymer matrix. The nanoparticles exhibited a typical magnetization blocking, which is sensitive on the variation of magnetic field, mode of zero field cooled/field cooled experiments and particle quantity in the matrix. The samples with lower particle quantity showed an upturn of magnetization down to 5 K, whereas the blocking of magnetization dominates at lower temperatures as the particle quantity increases in the polymer. We examine such magnetic behaviour in terms of …
Disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes in nanoparticles of nonpolar crystals is studied numerically. The methods previously used to treat phonons in defectless particles are adjusted for numerical evaluation of the disordered problem. Imperfections in the form of Gaussian and binary disorders as well as surface irregularities are investigated thoroughly in a wide range of impurity concentrations and disorder strengths. For dilute and weak point-like impurities the regimes of separated and overlapped phonon levels are obtained and the behavior of the linewidth predicted t…
The magnetization curves of densely packed single domain magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in the framework of an effective one spin model. The particles whose size polydispersity is taken into account are arranged in spherical clusters and both dipole dipole interactions (DDI) and magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) are included in the total energy. Having in mind the special case of spinel ferrites of intrinsic cubic symmetry, combined cubic and uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropies are considered with different configurations for the orientations of th…
The kinetics of order-disorder transition of FePt nanoparticles during high temperature annealing is theoretically investigated. A model is developed to address the influence of large surface to volume ratio of nanoparticles on both the thermodynamic and kinetic aspect of the ordering process; specifically, the nucleation and growth of L10 ordered domain within disordered nanoparticles. The size- and shape-dependence of transition kinetics are quantitatively addressed by a revised Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation that included corrections for deviations caused by the domination of surface nucleati…
Magnetization reversal in magnetic particles is one of the fundamental issues in magnetic data storage. Technological improvements require the understanding of dynamical magnetization reversal processes at nanosecond time scales. New strategies are needed to overcome current limitations. For example, the problem of thermal stability of the magnetization state (superparamagnetic limit) can be pushed down to smaller particle sizes by increasing the magnetic anisotropy. High fields are then needed to reverse the magnetization that are difficult to achieve in current devices. Here we propose a new…
Magnetization of antiferromagnetic nanoparticles is known to generally scale up inversely to their diameter (d) according to Néel's model. Here we report a deviation from this conventional linear 1/d dependence, altered significantly by the microstrain, in Ca and Ti substituted BiFeO3 nanoparticles. Magnetic properties of microstrain-controlled Bi1-xCaxFe1-yTiyO3-delta (y = 0 and x = y) nanoparticles are analyzed as a function of their size ranging from 18 nm to 200 nm. A complex interdependence of doping concentration (x or y), annealing temperature (T), microstrain (epsilon) and particle siz…
Magnetization and Mossbauer studies have been performed on the polymer coated magnetite nanoparticles with particle size from 5.1 to 14.7 nm. The maximum in the temperature dependence of magnetization (TM) is found to be inconsistent with the particle size (DTEM). The effective magnetic anisotropy (Kan) is found to increase with the decrease of DTEM, which is attributed to the increase of surface anisotropy. The absence of coercivity and remanence of magnetization noticed well above TM indicates the superparamagnetic behaviour, which has also been observed in the temperature dependent Mossbaue…
Recent experimental and theoretical studies show that the switching behavior of magnetic nanoparticles can be well controlled by external time-dependent magnetic fields. In this work, we inspect theoretically the influence of the temperature and the magnetic anisotropy on the spin-dynamics and the switching properties of single domain magnetic nanoparticles (Stoner-particles). Our theoretical tools are the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation extended as to deal with finite temperatures within a Langevine framework. Physical quantities of interest are the minimum field amplitudes required for swit…
We study the relaxation characteristics in the two-dimensional ($l^{}_x \times l^{}_y$) array of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as a function of aspect ratio $A^{}_r=l^{}_y/l^{}_x$, dipolar interaction strength $h^{}_d$ and anisotropy axis orientation using computer simulation. The anisotropy axes of all the MNPs are assumed to have the same direction, $α$ being the orientational angle. Irrespective of $α$ and $A^{}_r$, the functional form of the magnetization-decay curve is perfectly exponentially decaying with $h^{}_d\leq0.2$. There exists a transition in relaxation behaviour at $h^{}_d\appro…
We discuss numerical and theoretical results for models of magnetization switching in nanoparticles and ultrathin films. The models and computational methods include kinetic Ising and classical Heisenberg models of highly anisotropic magnets which are simulated by dynamic Monte Carlo methods, and micromagnetics models of continuum-spin systems that are studied by finite-temperature Langevin simulations. The theoretical analysis builds on the fact that a magnetic particle or film that is magnetized in a direction antiparallel to the applied field is in a metastable state. Nucleation theory is t…
By numerically solving the equations of motion for atomic spins we show that internal spin-wave processes in large enough magnetic particles, initially in unstable states, lead to complete magnetization reversal and thermalization. The particle's magnetization strongly decreases in the middle of reversal and then recovers. We identify two main scenarios, exponential and linear spin-wave instabilities. For the latter, the longitudinal and transverse relaxation rates have been obtained analytically. Orientation dependence of these rates leads to a nonexponential relaxation of the particle's magn…
In this investigation, we have synthesized BiFeO$_{3}$ nanoparticles by varying hydrothermal reaction temperatures from 200 $^{\circ}$C to 120 $^{\circ}$C to assess their visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity along with their applicability for hydrogen production via water splitting. The rhombohedral perovskite structure of BiFeO$_{3}$ is formed for hydrothermal reaction temperature up to 160 $^{\circ}$C, however, for a further decrement of reaction temperature a mixed sillenite phase is observed. The XRD Rietveld analysis, XPS analysis and FESEM imaging ensure the formation of single-p…
We investigate the interaction between spherical magnetic nanoparticles which present either a single domain or a vortex structure. First the magnetic structure of a uniaxial soft sphere is revisited, and then the interaction energy is calculated from a micromagnetic simulation. In the vortex regime the orientation of the vortex relative to the easy axis depends on both the particle size and the anisotropy constant. We show that the leading term of the interaction is the dipolar interaction energy between the magnetic moments. For particles presenting a vortex structure, we show that the polar…
Controlled assembly of single-crystal, colloidal maghemite nanoparticles is facilitated via a high-temperature polyol-based pathway. Structural characterization shows that size-tunable nanoclusters of 50 and 86 nm diameters (D), with high dispersibility in aqueous media, are composed of $\sim$ 13 nm (d) crystallographically oriented nanoparticles. The interaction effects are examined against the increasing volume fraction, $ϕ$, of the inorganic magnetic phase that goes from individual colloidal nanoparticles ($ϕ$= 0.47) to clusters ($ϕ$= 0.72). The frozen-liquid dispersions of the latter exhib…
We have investigated the room temperature ferromagnetic order that develops in Al-substituted magnesium oxide, Mg(Al)O, nanoparticles with Al fractions of up to 5 at.%. All samples, including undoped MgO nanoparticles, exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism, with the saturation magnetization reaching a maximum of 0.023 emu/g at 2 at.% of Al. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identifies the presence of oxygen vacancies in both doped and undoped MgO nanoparticles, with the vacancy concentration increasing upon vacuum annealing of Mg(Al)O, resulting in two-fold enhancement of the saturation magne…
The magnetization of Zn1-xCoxO (0.0055 < x < 0.073) nanoparticles has been measured as a function of temperature T (1.7 K < T , 10 K) and for magnetic field up to 65 kOe using a SQUID magnetometer. Samples were synthesized by three different growth methods: microwave-assisted hydrothermal, combustion reaction and sol-gel. For all studied samples, the magnetic properties derive from the antiferromagnetic (AF) spin clustering due to the Co2+ nearest neighbors. At T >= 6 K, the magnetization of the Co2+ ions has a Brillouin-type behavior, but below 6 K, it shows a notable deviation. We have shown…
We report on the manipulation of magnetization by femtosecond laser pulses in a periodic array of cylindrical nickel nanoparticles. By performing experiments at different wavelength, we show that the excitation of collective surface plasmon resonances triggers demagnetization in zero field or magnetic switching in a small perpendicular field. Both magnetic effects are explained by plasmon-induced heating of the nickel nanoparticles to their Curie temperature. Model calculations confirm the strong correlation between the excitation of surface plasmon modes and laser-induced changes in magnetiza…
The magnetic relaxation processes in disordered two-dimensional ensembles of dipole-coupled magnetic nanoparticles are theoretically investigated by performing numerical simulations. The energy landscape of the system is explored by determining saddle points, adjacent local minima, energy barriers, and the associated minimum energy paths (MEPs) as functions of the structural disorder and particle density. The changes in the magnetic order of the nanostructure along the MEPs connecting adjacent minima are analyzed from a local perspective. In particular, we determine the extension of the correl…
We review some recent results beyond the now established theory of magnetization switching of a nanoparticle within the single-spin approximation. The first extension is that of the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for magnetization static switching under applied magnetic field including the effect of temperature at long-time scales. The second concerns a generalization of the Néel-Brown model for thermoactivated dynamic magnetization switching to include the effect of exchange interaction in the framework of Langer's theory in the intermediate-to-high damping limit. We finally argue why the single-spin…
Magnetic study on La2CoMnO6 nanoparticles revealed multiple magnetic transitions at 218 K, 135 K and below 38 K and the nature of the low temperature transition was unclear [J Appl Phys 111, 024102 2012]. Presence of mixed valance states of Co and Mn has been confirmed from the XPS measurement and its presence along with antisite disorder affects in reducing the saturation magnetization of the nanoparticles. The zero field cooled and field cooled bifurcation in dc magnetization, relaxation in zero field cooled magnetization and large enhancement in coercive field below the glassy temperature h…
We report the first direct observation of ferromagnetic spin polarization of Au nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.9 nm using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Owing to the element selectivity of XMCD, only the gold magnetization is explored. Magnetization of gold atoms estimated by XMCD shows a good agreement with the results obtained by conventional magnetometry. This result is evidence of intrinsic spin polarization in nano-sized gold.

We present a study on the magnetic behavior of dextran-coated magnetite nanoparticles (DM NPs) with sizes between 3 and 19 nm, synthesized by hydrothermal-assisted co-precipitation method. The decrease of saturation magnetization ($M_s$) with decreasing particle size has been modeled by assuming the existence of a spin-disordered layer at the particle surface, which is magnetically dead. Based on this core-shell model and taking into account the weight contribution of the non-magnetic coating layer (dextran) to the whole magnetization, the dead layer thickness ($t$) and saturation magnetizatio…
Co2FeAl (CFA) nanoparticles (NPs) of different sizes were synthesized by chemical route. The effect of the size of NPs upon the structure and magnetization compared to its bulk counterpart was investigated. The structure and composition were determined from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy. XRD analysis shows that the samples are having single (A2-type) disordered phase. Magnetization measurements suggest that the samples are soft ferromagnetic in nature with very low coercivity. Enhanced magnetic properties like saturation magnetization, coercive force, retentivity, and Curie-t…
We study and compare magnetic and electron paramagnetic resonance behaviors of bulk and nanoparticles of Nd(1-x)CaxMnO3 in hole doped (x = 0.4;NCMOH) and electron doped (x = 0.6;NCMOE) samples. NCMOH in bulk form shows a complex temperature dependence of magnetization M(T), with a charge ordering (CO) transition at around 250 K, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at around 150 K and a transition to a canted AFM phase/mixed phase at around 80 K. Bulk NCMOE behaves quite differently with just a charge ordering transition at around 280 K, thus providing a striking example of the so called elec…
Assemblies of magnetic nanoparticles exhibit interesting physical properties arising from the competition of intraparticle dynamics and interparticle interactions. In ordered arrays of magnetic nanoparticles magnetostatic interparticle interactions introduce collective dynamics acting competitively to random anisotropy. Basic understanding, characterization and control of dipolar interaction effects in arrays of magnetic nanoparticles is an issue of central importance. To this end, numerical simulation techniques offer an indispensable tool. We report on Monte Carlo studies of the magnetic hys…
We calculate the contribution of the Neel surface anisotropy to the effective anisotropy of magnetic nanoparticles of spherical shape cut out of a simple cubic lattice. The effective anisotropy arises because deviations of atomic magnetizations from collinearity and thus the energy depends on the orientation of the global magnetization. The result is second order in the Neel surface anisotropy, scales with the particle volume and has cubic symmetry with preferred directions [+-1,+-1,+-1].
We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of a model of a single maghemite ferrimagnetic nanoparticle including radial surface anisotropy distinct from that in the core with the aim to clarify what is its role on the magnetization processes at low temperatures. The low temperature equilibrium states are analized and compared to those of a ferromagnetic particle with the same lattice structure. We have found that the formation of hedgehog-like structures due to increased surface anisotropy is responsible for a change in the reversal mechanism of the particles.
Magnetic chains of hollow cobalt nanoparticles (450-750 nm) have been synthesized by using poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as a template in an ethylene glycol solution. In this process, CoCl2.6H2O was reduced by N2H4.H2O in the presence of PVP. All of the Co nanoparticles are hollow with a shell of 40 nm and self-assembled into a chainlike structure that is as long as ~10 micron. At 300 K, the branched hollow Co nanoparticle chains exhibit a saturation magnetization of 37.5 emu/g, a remnant magnetization of approximately 1.55 emu/g, and a coercivity of about 66 Oe, which is more than an order of…
We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of the magnetic properties of individual spherical nanoparticles with the aim to explain the role played by surface anisotropy on their low temperature magnetization processes. Phase diagrams for the equilibrium configurations have been obtained, showing a change from quasi-uniform magnetization state to a state with hedgehog-like structures at the surface as $k_S$ increases. Through the simulated hysteresis loops and the analysis of spin configurations along them, we have identified a change in the magnetization reversal mechanism from quasi-u…
