Text recognition is a long-standing research problem for document digitalization. Existing approaches are usually built based on CNN for image understanding and RNN for char-level text generation. In addition, another language model is usually needed to improve the overall accuracy as a post-processing step. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end text recognition approach with pre-trained image Transformer and text Transformer models, namely TrOCR, which leverages the Transformer architecture for both image understanding and wordpiece-level text generation. The TrOCR model is simple but effective, and can be pre-trained with large-scale synthetic data and fine-tuned with human-labeled datasets. Experiments show that the TrOCR model outperforms the current state-of-the-art models on the printed, handwritten and scene text recognition tasks. The TrOCR models and code are publicly available at \url{https://aka.ms/trocr}.

Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian scripts especially for the South Indian scripts. This paper provides an overview of offline handwritten character recognition in South Indian Scripts, namely Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telungu.
The success rates of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems for printed Malayalam documents is quite impressive with the state of the art accuracy levels in the range of 85-95% for various. However for real applications, further enhancement of this accuracy levels are required. One of the bottle necks in further enhancement of the accuracy is identified as close-matching characters. In this paper, we delineate the close matching characters in Malayalam and report the development of a specialised classifier for these close-matching characters. The output of a state of the art of OCR is tak…

Intensive research has been done on optical character recognition ocr and a large number of articles have been published on this topic during the last few decades. Many commercial OCR systems are now available in the market, but most of these systems work for Roman, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters. There are no sufficient number of works on Indian language character recognition especially Kannada script among 12 major scripts in India. This paper presents a review of existing work on printed Kannada script and their results. The characteristics of Kannada script and Kannada Character R…

Driven by deep learning and the large volume of data, scene text recognition has evolved rapidly in recent years. Formerly, RNN-attention based methods have dominated this field, but suffer from the problem of \textit{attention drift} in certain situations. Lately, semantic segmentation based algorithms have proven effective at recognizing text of different forms (horizontal, oriented and curved). However, these methods may produce spurious characters or miss genuine characters, as they rely heavily on a thresholding procedure operated on segmentation maps. To tackle these challenges, we propo…
HOCR is abbreviated as Handwritten Optical Character Recognition. HOCR is a process of recognition of different handwritten characters from a digital image of documents. Handwritten automatic character recognition has attracted many researchers all over the world to contribute handwritten character recognition domain. Shape identification and feature extraction is very important part of any character recognition system and success of method is highly dependent on selection of features. However feature extraction is the most important step in defining the shape of the character as precisely and…

Feature extraction is one of the fundamental problems of character recognition. The performance of character recognition system is depends on proper feature extraction and correct classifier selection. In this article, a rapid feature extraction method is proposed and named as Celled Projection (CP) that compute the projection of each section formed through partitioning an image. The recognition performance of the proposed method is compared with other widely used feature extraction methods that are intensively studied for many different scripts in literature. The experiments have been conduct…

Despite the significant success in the field of text recognition, complex and unsolved problems still exist in this field. In recent years, the recognition accuracy of the English language has greatly increased, while the problem of recognition of hieroglyphs has received much less attention. Hieroglyph recognition or image recognition with Korean, Japanese or Chinese characters have differences from the traditional text recognition task. This article discusses the main differences between hieroglyph languages and the Latin alphabet in the context of image recognition. A light-weight method fo…
The problem of optical character recognition, OCR, has been widely discussed in the literature. Having a hand-written text, the program aims at recognizing the text. Even though there are several approaches to this issue, it is still an open problem. In this paper we would like to propose an approach that uses K-nearest neighbors algorithm, and has the accuracy of more than 90%. The training and run time is also very short.
There are many difficulties facing a handwritten Arabic recognition system such as unlimited variation in human handwriting, similarities of distinct character shapes, interconnections of neighbouring characters and their position in the word. The typical Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems are based mainly on three stages, preprocessing, features extraction and recognition. This paper proposes new methods for handwritten Arabic character recognition which is based on novel preprocessing operations including different kinds of noise removal also different kind of features like structur…

At first, text regions are extracted and skew corrected. Then, these regions are binarized and segmented into lines and characters. Characters are passed into the recognition module. Experimenting with a set of 100 business card images, captured by cell phone camera, we have achieved a maximum recognition accuracy of 92.74%. Despite the recent success of text detection and recognition methods, existing evaluation metrics fail to provide a fair and reliable comparison among those methods. In addition, there exists no end-to-end evaluation metric that takes characteristics of OCR tasks into account. Previous end-to-end metric contains cascaded errors from the binary scoring process applied in both detection and recognition tasks. Ignoring partially correct results raises a gap between quantitative and qualitative analysis, and prevents fine-grained assessment. Based on the fact that character is a key element of tex…

Finding local invariant patterns in handwrit-ten characters and/or digits for optical character recognition is a difficult task. Variations in writing styles from one person to another make this task challenging. We have proposed a non-explicit feature extraction method using a multi-scale multi-column skip convolutional neural network in this work. Local and global features extracted from different layers of the proposed architecture are combined to derive the final feature descriptor encoding a character or digit image. Our method is evaluated on four publicly available datasets of isolated …
Leveraging the advances of natural language processing, most recent scene text recognizers adopt an encoder-decoder architecture where text images are first converted to representative features and then a sequence of characters via `sequential decoding'. However, scene text images suffer from rich noises of different sources such as complex background and geometric distortions which often confuse the decoder and lead to incorrect alignment of visual features at noisy decoding time steps. This paper presents I2C2W, a novel scene text recognition technique that is tolerant to geometric and photo…
Optical Character Recognition deals in recognition and classification of characters from an image. For the recognition to be accurate, certain topological and geometrical properties are calculated, based on which a character is classified and recognized. Also, the Human psychology perceives characters by its overall shape and features such as strokes, curves, protrusions, enclosures etc. These properties, also called Features are extracted from the image by means of spatial pixel-based calculation. A collection of such features, called Vectors, help in defining a character uniquely, by means o…
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has many real world applications. The existing methods normally detect where the characters are, and then recognize the character for each detected location. Thus the accuracy of characters recognition is impacted by the performance of characters detection. In this paper, we propose a method for recognizing characters without detecting the location of each character. This is done by converting the OCR task into an image captioning task. One advantage of the proposed method is that the labeled bounding boxes for the characters are not needed during training. …

Irregular scene text recognition has attracted much attention from the research community, mainly due to the complexity of shapes of text in natural scene. However, recent methods either rely on shape-sensitive modules such as bounding box regression, or discard sequence learning. To tackle these issues, we propose a pair of coupling modules, termed as Character Anchoring Module (CAM) and Anchor Pooling Module (APM), to extract high-level semantics from two-dimensional space to form feature sequences. The proposed CAM localizes the text in a shape-insensitive way by design by anchoring charact…

The layout branch based on fully convolutional network outputs a binary mask. We then use Hough transform for line detection on the binary mask and combine …
