Landmark-based robot self-localization has recently garnered interest as a highly-compressive domain-invariant approach for performing visual place recognition (VPR) across domains (e.g., time of day, weather, and season). However, landmark-based self-localization can be an ill-posed problem for a passive observer (e.g., manual robot control), as many viewpoints may not provide an effective landmark view. In this study, we consider an active self-localization task by an active observer and present a novel reinforcement learning (RL)-based next-best-view (NBV) planner. Our contributions are as follows. (1) SIMBAD-based VPR: We formulate the problem of landmark-based compact scene description as SIMBAD (similarity-based pattern recognition) and further present its deep learning extension. (2) VPR-to-NBV knowledge transfer: We address the challenge of RL under uncertainty (i.e., active self-localization) by transferring the state recognition ability of VPR to the NBV. (3) NNQL-based NBV: We regard the available VPR as the experience database by adapting nearest-neighbor approximation of Q-learning (NNQL). The result shows an extremely compact data structure that compresses both the VPR and NBV into a single incremental inverted index. Experiments using the public NCLT dataset validated the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In this letter, we present a novel descriptor based on Urquhart tessellations derived from the position of trees in a forest. We propose a framework that uses these descriptors to detect previously seen observations and landmark correspondences, even with partial overlap and noise. We run loop closure detection experiments in simulation and real-world data map-merging from different flights of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in a pine tree forest and show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in accuracy and robustness.
Vision is one of the most important of the senses, and humans use it extensively during navigation. We evaluated different types of image and video frame descriptors that could be used to determine distinctive visual landmarks for localizing a person based on what is seen by a camera that they carry. To do this, we created a database containing over 3 km of video-sequences with ground-truth in the form of distance travelled along different corridors. Using this database, the accuracy of localization - both in terms of knowing which route a user is on - and in terms of position along a certain …

The growing popularity of autonomous systems creates a need for reliable and efficient metric pose retrieval algorithms. Currently used approaches tend to rely on nearest neighbor search of binary descriptors to perform the 2D-3D matching and guarantee realtime capabilities on mobile platforms. These methods struggle, however, with the growing size of the map, changes in viewpoint or appearance, and visual aliasing present in the environment. The rigidly defined descriptor patterns only capture a limited neighborhood of the keypoint and completely ignore the overall visual context. We propose …
We propose a novel scoring concept for visual place recognition based on nearest neighbor descriptor voting and demonstrate how the algorithm naturally emerges from the problem formulation. Based on the observation that the number of votes for matching places can be evaluated using a binomial distribution model, loop closures can be detected with high precision. By casting the problem into a probabilistic framework, we not only remove the need for commonly employed heuristic parameters but also provide a powerful score to classify matching and non-matching places. We present methods for both a…

Localization is an essential task for mobile autonomous robotic systems that want to use pre-existing maps or create new ones in the context of SLAM. Today, many robotic platforms are equipped with high-accuracy 3D LiDAR sensors, which allow a geometric mapping, and cameras able to provide semantic cues of the environment. Segment-based mapping and localization have been applied with great success to 3D point-cloud data, while semantic understanding has been shown to improve localization performance in vision based systems. In this paper we combine both modalities in SemSegMap, extending SegMa…

Mapping and localization are two essential tasks for mobile robots in real-world applications. However, largescale and dynamic scenes challenge the accuracy and robustness of most current mature solutions. This situation becomes even worse when computational resources are limited. In this paper, we present a novel lightweight object-level mapping and localization method with high accuracy and robustness. Different from previous methods, our method does not need a prior constructed precise geometric map, which greatly releases the storage burden, especially for large-scale navigation. We use ob…
The problem visual place recognition is commonly used strategy for localization. Most successful appearance based methods typically rely on a large database of views endowed with local or global image descriptors and strive to retrieve the views of the same location. The quality of the results is often affected by the density of the reference views and the robustness of the image representation with respect to viewpoint variations, clutter and seasonal changes. In this work we present an approach for geo-locating a novel view and determining camera location and orientation using a map and a sp…
Scene text is an important feature to be extracted, especially in vision-based mobile robot navigation as many potential landmarks such as nameplates and information signs contain text. In this paper, a novel two-step text localization method for Indoor Mobile Robot Navigation is introduced. This method is based on morphological operators and machine learning techniques and can be used in real time environments. The proposed method has two steps. At First, a new set of morphological operators is applied with a particular sequence to extract high contrast areas that have high probability of tex…

Visual Place Recognition (VPR) approaches have typically attempted to match places by identifying visual cues, image regions or landmarks that have high ``utility'' in identifying a specific place. But this concept of utility is not singular - rather it can take a range of forms. In this paper, we present a novel approach to deduce two key types of utility for VPR: the utility of visual cues `specific' to an environment, and to a particular place. We employ contrastive learning principles to estimate both the environment- and place-specific utility of Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors (…

In this paper, we present a deep learning based image feature extraction method designed specifically for face images. To train the feature extraction model, we construct a large scale photo-realistic face image dataset with ground-truth correspondence between multi-view face images, which are synthesized from real photographs via an inverse rendering procedure. The deep face feature (DFF) is trained using correspondence between face images rendered from different views. Using the trained DFF model, we can extract a feature vector for each pixel of a face image, which distinguishes different f…

In this work we introduce Natural Segmentation and Matching (NSM), an algorithm for reliable localization, using laser, in both urban and natural environments. Current state-of-the-art global approaches do not generalize well to structure-poor vegetated areas such as forests or orchards. In these environments clutter and perceptual aliasing prevents repeatable extraction of distinctive landmarks between different test runs. In natural forests, tree trunks are not distinctive, foliage intertwines and there is a complete lack of planar structure. In this paper we propose a method for place recog…
