We present Gradient Activation Maps (GAM) - a machinery for explaining predictions made by visual similarity and classification models. By gleaning localized gradient and activation information from multiple network layers, GAM offers improved visual explanations, when compared to existing alternatives. The algorithmic advantages of GAM are explained in detail, and validated empirically, where it is shown that GAM outperforms its alternatives across various tasks and datasets.

Can we construct an explainable face recognition network able to learn a facial part-based feature like eyes, nose, mouth and so forth, without any manual annotation or additionalsion datasets? In this paper, we propose a generic Explainable Channel Loss (ECLoss) to construct an explainable face recognition network. The explainable network trained with ECLoss can easily learn the facial part-based representation on the target convolutional layer, where an individual channel can detect a certain face part. Our experiments on dozens of datasets show that ECLoss achieves superior explainability m…

Wilderness areas offer important ecological and social benefits and there are urgent reasons to discover where their positive characteristics and ecological functions are present and able to flourish. We apply a novel explainable machine learning technique to satellite images which show wild and anthropogenic areas in Fennoscandia. Occluding certain activations in an interpretable artificial neural network we complete a comprehensive sensitivity analysis regarding wild and anthropogenic characteristics. This enables us to predict detailed and high-resolution sensitivity maps highlighting these…

Deep neural networks have shown their profound impact on achieving human level performance in visual saliency prediction. However, it is still unclear how they learn the task and what it means in terms of understanding human visual system. In this work, we develop a technique to derive explainable saliency models from their corresponding deep neural architecture based saliency models by applying human perception theories and the conventional concepts of saliency. This technique helps us understand the learning pattern of the deep network at its intermediate layers through their activation maps…
Recent technological advances in synthetic data have enabled the generation of images with such high quality that human beings cannot tell the difference between real-life photographs and Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated images. Given the critical necessity of data reliability and authentication, this article proposes to enhance our ability to recognise AI-generated images through computer vision. Initially, a synthetic dataset is generated that mirrors the ten classes of the already available CIFAR-10 dataset with latent diffusion which provides a contrasting set of images for compariso…
We describe an explainable AI saliency map method for use with deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) that is much more efficient than popular fine-resolution gradient methods. It is also quantitatively similar or better in accuracy. Our technique works by measuring information at the end of each network scale which is then combined into a single saliency map. We describe how saliency measures can be made more efficient by exploiting Saliency Map Order Equivalence. We visualize individual scale/layer contributions by using a Layer Ordered Visualization of Information. This provides an intere…

The need for Explainable AI is increasing with the development of deep learning. The saliency maps derived from convolutional neural networks generally fail in localizing with accuracy the image features justifying the network prediction. This is because those maps are either low-resolution as for CAM [Zhou et al., 2016], or smooth as for perturbation-based methods [Zeiler and Fergus, 2014], or do correspond to a large number of widespread peaky spots as for gradient-based approaches [Sundararajan et al., 2017, Smilkov et al., 2017]. In contrast, our work proposes to combine the information fr…

Dermatological diagnosis automation is essential in addressing the high prevalence of skin diseases and critical shortage of dermatologists. Despite approaching expert-level diagnosis performance, convolutional neural network (ConvNet) adoption in clinical practice is impeded by their limited explainability, and by subjective, expensive explainability validations. We introduce DermX and DermX+, an end-to-end framework for explainable automated dermatological diagnosis. DermX is a clinically-inspired explainable dermatological diagnosis ConvNet, trained using DermXDB, a 554 image dataset annota…

Recent years, typhoon damages has become social problem owing to climate change. In 9 September 2019, Typhoon Faxai passed on the Chiba in Japan, whose damages included with electric provision stop because of strong wind recorded on the maximum 45 meter per second. A large amount of tree fell down, and the neighbor electric poles also fell down at the same time. These disaster features have caused that it took 18 days for recovery longer than past ones. Immediate responses are important for faster recovery. As long as we can, aerial survey for global screening of devastated region would be req…
Evaluating Single and Multi-Omics Based Explainable Artificial Intelligence (MOXAI) for Molecular Subclass Classification of Adult-Type Diffuse Gliomas
Improving the interpretability of geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) models has become critically important to open the "black box" of complex AI models, such as deep learning. This paper compares popular saliency map generation techniques and their strengths and weaknesses in interpreting GeoAI and deep learning models' reasoning behaviors, particularly when applied to geospatial analysis and image processing tasks. We surveyed two broad classes of model explanation methods: perturbation-based and gradient-based methods. The former identifies important image areas, which help machines…
Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) is increasingly used to analyze the behavior of neural networks. Concept activation uses human-interpretable concepts to explain neural network behavior. This study aimed at assessing the feasibility of regression concept activation to explain detection and classification of multi-modal volumetric data. Proof-of-concept was demonstrated in metastatic prostate cancer patients imaged with positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). Multi-modal volumetric concept activation was used to provide global and local explanations. Sensitivity was …
