It is proved that certain discrete analogues of maximally modulated singular integrals of Stein-Wainger type are bounded on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^n)$ for all $p\in (1,\infty)$. This extends earlier work of the authors concerning the case $p=2$. Some open problems for further investigation are briefly discussed.
Let Pd denote the space of all real polynomials of degree at most d. It is an old result of Stein and Wainger that for every polynomial P in Pd: |p.v.\int_R {e^{iP(t)} dt/t} | < C(d) for some constant C(d) depending only on d. On the other hand, Carbery, Wainger and Wright claim that the true order of magnitude of the above principal value integral is log d. We prove this conjecture.
For $d \geq 2, \ D \geq 1$, let $\mathscr{P}_{d,D}$ denote the set of all degree $d$ polynomials in $D$ dimensions with real coefficients without linear terms. We prove that for any Calderón-Zygmund kernel, $K$, the maximally modulated and maximally truncated discrete singular integral operator, \begin{align*} \sup_{P \in \mathscr{P}_{d,D}, \ N} \Big| \sum_{0 < |m| \leq N} f(x-m) K(m) e^{2πi P(m)} \Big|, \end{align*} is bounded on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^D)$, for each $1 < p < \infty$. Our proof introduces a stopping time based off of equidistribution theory of polynomial orbits to relate the analy…

We prove that the discrete spherical maximal functions (in the spirit of Magyar, Stein and Wainger) corresponding to the Euclidean spheres in $\mathbb Z^d$ with dyadic radii have $\ell^p(\mathbb Z^d)$ bounds for all $p\in[2, \infty]$ independent of the dimensions $d\ge 5$. An important part of our argument is the asymptotic formula in the Waring problem for the squares with a dimension-free multiplicative error term. By considering new approximating multipliers we will show how to absorb an exponential in dimension (like $C^d$ for some $C>1$) growth in norms arising from the sampling principle…
Stein and Wainger proved the $L^p$ bounds of the polynomial Carleson operator for all integer-power polynomials without linear term. In the present paper, we partially generalise this result to all fractional monomials in dimension one. Moreover, the connections with Carleson's theorem and the Hilbert transform along vector fields or (variable) curves are also discussed in details.
The main purpose of this paper is to study multi-parameter singular integral operators which commute with Zygmund dilations. We introduce a class of singular integral operators associated with Zygmund dilations and show the boundedness for these operators on $L^p, 1<p<\infty$, which covers those studied by Ricci--Stein \cite{RS} and Nagel--Wainger \cite{NW}
We study operators of the form $$ Tf(x)= ψ(x) \int f(γ_t(x))K(t)\,dt, $$ where $γ_t(x)$ is a real analytic function of $(t,x)$ mapping from a neighborhood of $(0,0)$ in $\mathbb{R}^N \times \mathbb{R}^n$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$ satisfying $γ_0(x)\equiv x$, $ψ(x) \in C_c^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$, and $K(t)$ is a "multi-parameter singular kernel" with compact support in $\mathbb{R}^N$; for example when $K(t)$ is a product singular kernel. The celebrated work of Christ, Nagel, Stein, and Wainger studied such operators with smooth $γ_t(x)$, in the single-parameter case when $K(t)$ is a Calderón-Zygmund k…
Motivated by Bourgain's work on pointwise ergodic theorems, and the work of Stein and Stein-Wainger on maximally modulated singular integrals without linear terms, we prove that the maximally monomially modulated discrete Hilbert transform, \[ \mathcal{C}_df(x) := \sup_λ\left| \sum_{m \neq 0} f(x-m) \frac{e^{2πi λm^d}}{m} \right| \] is bounded on all $\ell^p, \ 2 - \frac{1}{d^2 + 1} < p < \infty$, for any $d \geq 2$. We also establish almost everywhere pointwise convergence of the modulated ergodic Hilbert transforms (as $λ\to 0$) \[ \sum_{m \neq 0} T^m f(x) \cdot \frac{e^{2πi λm^d}}{m} \] for…
We provide a Fefferman-Stein type weighted inequality for maximally modulated Calderón-Zygmund operators that satisfy \textit{a priori} weak type unweighted estimates. This inequality corresponds to a maximally modulated version of a result of Pérez. Applying it to the Hilbert transform we obtain the corresponding Fefferman-Stein inequality for the Carleson operator $\mathcal{C}$, that is $\mathcal{C}: L^p(M^{\lfloor p \rfloor +1}w) \to L^p(w)$ for any $1<p<\infty$ and any weight function $w$, with bound independent of $w$. We also provide a maximal-multiplier weighted theorem, a vector-valued…
We exhibit a range of $\ell ^{p}(\mathbb{Z}^d)$-improving properties for the discrete spherical maximal average in every dimension $d\geq 5$. The strategy used to show these improving properties is then adapted to establish sparse bounds, which extend the discrete maximal theorem of Magyar, Stein, and Wainger to weighted spaces. In particular, the sparse bounds imply that the discrete spherical maximal average is a bounded map from $\ell^2(w)$ into $\ell^2(w)$ provided $w^{\frac{d}{d-4}+δ}$ belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$ for some $δ>0.$
The purpose of this paper is to study the sparse bound of the operator of the form $f \mapsto ψ(x) \int f(γ_t(x))K(t)dt$, where $γ_t(x)$ is a $C^\infty$ function defined on a neighborhood of the origin in $(x, t) \in \mathbb R^n \times \mathbb R^k$, satisfying $γ_0(x) \equiv x$, $ψ$ is a $C^\infty$ cut-off function supported on a small neighborhood of $0 \in \mathbb R^n$ and $K$ is a Calderón-Zygmund kernel suppported on a small neighborhood of $0 \in \mathbb R^k$. Christ, Nagel, Stein and Wainger gave conditions on $γ$ under which $T: L^p \mapsto L^p (1<p<\infty)$ is bounded. Under the these …
We prove sparse bounds for the spherical maximal operator of Magyar, Stein and Wainger. The bounds are conjecturally sharp, and contain an endpoint estimate. The new method of proof is inspired by ones by Bourgain and Ionescu, is very efficient, and has not been used in the proof of sparse bounds before. The Hardy-Littlewood Circle method is used to decompose the multiplier into major and minor arc components. The efficiency arises as one only needs a single estimate on each element of the decomposition.
For a polynomial $P$ mapping the integers into the integers, define an averaging operator $A_{N} f(x):=\frac{1}{N}\sum_{k=1}^N f(x+P(k))$ acting on functions on the integers. We prove sufficient conditions for the $\ell^{p}$-improving inequality \begin{equation*} \|A_N f\|_{\ell^q(\mathbb{Z})} \lesssim_{P,p,q} N^{-d(\frac{1}{p}-\frac{1}{q})} \|f\|_{\ell^p(\mathbb{Z})}, \qquad N \in\mathbb{N}, \end{equation*} where $1\leq p \leq q \leq \infty$. For a range of quadratic polynomials, the inequalities established are sharp, up to the boundary of the allowed pairs of $(p,q)$. For degree three and h…
Let $ λ^2 \in \mathbb N $, and in dimensions $ d\geq 5$, let $ A_{λ} f (x)$ denote the average of $ f \;:\; \mathbb Z ^{d} \to \mathbb R $ over the lattice points on the sphere of radius $λ$ centered at $x$. We prove $ \ell ^{p}$ improving properties of $ A_{λ}$. \begin{equation*} \lVert A_{λ}\rVert_{\ell ^{p} \to \ell ^{p'}} \leq C_{d,p, ω(λ^2 )} λ^{d ( 1-\frac{2}p)}, \qquad \tfrac{d-1}{d+1} < p \leq \frac{d} {d-2}. \end{equation*} It holds in dimension $ d =4$ for odd $ λ^2 $. The dependence is in terms of $ ω(λ^2 )$, the number of distinct prime factors of $ λ^2 $. These inequalities are di…
We prove variation-norm estimates for certain oscillatory integrals related to Carleson's theorem. Bounds for the corresponding maximal operators were first proven by Stein and Wainger. Our estimates are sharp in the range of exponents, up to endpoints. Such variation-norm estimates have applications to discrete analogues and ergodic theory. The proof relies on square function estimates for Schrödinger-like equations due to Lee, Rogers and Seeger. In dimension one, our proof additionally relies on a local smoothing estimate. Though the known endpoint local smoothing estimate by Rogers and Seeg…
We prove that the class of convolution-type kernels satisfying suitable decay conditions of the Fourier transform, appearing in the works of Christ, Christ-Rubio de Francia, and Duoandikoetxea-Rubio de Francia gives rise to maximally truncated singular integrals satisfying a sparse bound by $(1+\varepsilon,1+\varepsilon)$-averages for all $\varepsilon>0$, with linear growth in $\varepsilon^{-1}$. This is an extension of the sparse domination principle by Conde-Alonso, Culiuc, Ou and the first author to maximally truncated singular integrals. Our results cover the rough homogeneous singular int…
