Kinematic reconstruction of top quarks allows to define a set of kinematic observables relevant to various physics processes that involve top quarks and provides an additional handle for the suppression of background events. Radiation of photons in association with the top quarks alters the kinematics and the topology of the event, leading to visible systematic effects in measurable observables. The present study introduces an improved reconstruction of the top quark kinematics in the presence of photon radiation. The results are presented for processes with top quark pair production, as well as for singly-produced top quarks.
Production of a single top quark provides excellent opportunity for understanding top quark physics and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa structure of the quark sector in the Standard Model. Although an associated production with a b-quark has already been observed at the Tevatron in 2009, a single top production in association with a W gauge boson has not been observed till 2014 at the LHC, where pair production of the top quark serves as the dominant background. Due to the kinematic similarity between tW and the dominant background, it is challenging to find suitable kinematic variables that offer g…
The ongoing perplexing scenario with no hints of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider can be elucidated amicably if the exotic particle spectrum in many of the well-motivated theoretical models possesses degenerate mass. We investigate the usefulness of different kinematic variables sensitive to the compressed mass region, and propose a search strategy considering a phenomenological supersymmetric scenario where the top squark undergoes a four-body decay due to its extremely narrow mass difference with the lightest supersymmetric particle. Considering a challenging but relatively clean dil…
We discuss the discovery potential of a dark force carrier ($Z'$) of very light mass, $m_{Z'} \lesssim {\cal O}(1-10)$ GeV, at hadron colliders via rare top quark decays, especially when it decays invisibly in typical search schemes. We emphasize that the top sector is promising for the discovery of new particles because top quark pairs are copiously produced at the Large Hadron Collider. The signal process is initiated by a rare top decay into a bottom quark and a charged Higgs boson ($H^\pm$) decaying subsequently into a $W$ and one or multiple $Z'$s. The light $Z'$ can be invisible in colli…
A new algorithm is presented to perform the full kinematic reconstruction of top quark pair events produced at future electron-positron colliders in the case of dilepton decays of the $W$ bosons to electrons or muons. The momentum components of the undetected neutrino and anti-neutrino in the event are reconstructed by employing several kinematic conditions comprising a non-linear system of six equations. This system is solved numerically using two independent methods and the selection of the best candidate real solution for each event is determined by a likelihood discriminant. Results are pr…
Measurement of the Top-antitop Production Cross Section in pp Collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV using the Kinematic Properties of Events with Leptons and Jets
We discuss singularity variables which are properly suited for analyzing the kinematics of events with missing transverse energy at the LHC. We consider six of the simplest event topologies encountered in studies of leptonic W-bosons and top quarks, as well as in SUSY-like searches for new physics with dark matter particles. In each case, we illustrate the general prescription for finding the relevant singularity variable, which in turn helps delineate the visible parameter subspace on which the singularities are located. Our results can be used in two different ways - first, as a guide for ta…
We introduce a method to reconstruct the kinematics of neutral-current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) using a deep neural network (DNN). Unlike traditional methods, it exploits the full kinematic information of both the scattered electron and the hadronic-final state, and it accounts for QED radiation by identifying events with radiated photons and event-level momentum imbalance. The method is studied with simulated events at HERA and the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We show that the DNN method outperforms all the traditional methods over the full phase space, improving resolution and …
In this paper we present a technique to reconstruct the scaling variables defining $ep$ deep inelastic scattering by performing a kinematic fit. This reconstruction technique makes use of the full potential of the data collected. It is based on Bayes Theorem and involves the use of informative priors. The kinematic fit method has been tested for the neutral current ep simulated sample at a center of mass energy of 318 GeV with $Q^2$ > 400 GeV$^2$. In addition to the scaling variables, this method is able to estimate the energy of possible initial state radiation (E$_γ$ ) which otherwise goes u…
Measurements are reported of the normalized differential cross sections for top quark pair production with respect to four kinematic event variables: the missing transverse energy; the scalar sum of the jet transverse momentum (pT); the scalar sum of the pT of all objects in the event; and the pT of leptonically decaying W bosons from top quark decays. The data sample, collected using the CMS detector at the LHC, consists of 5.0 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and 19.7 inverse femtobarns at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. Top quark pair events containing one electron or muon…
Measurements of differential $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ production cross sections are presented in the single-lepton decay channel, as a function of a number of kinematic event variables. The measurements are performed with proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2016, with an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The data are compared to a variety of state-of-the-art leading-order and next-to-leading-order $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ simulations.
A probabilistic reconstruction using machine-learning of the decay kinematics of top-quark pairs produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions is presented. A deep neural network whose core consists of a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) is trained to infer the four-momenta of the two top quarks produced in the hard scattering process. The MadGraph5+Pythia8 Monte Carlo event generator is used to create a sample of top-quark pairs decaying in the $μ$+jets channel, whose final-state objects are used to create the input to the deep neural network. Distortions due to limited resoluti…
A measurement of the Higgs boson Yukawa coupling to the top quark is presented using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$, recorded with the CMS detector. The coupling strength with respect to the standard model value, $Y_\mathrm{t}$, is determined from kinematic distributions in $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ final states containing ee, $μμ$, or e$μ$ pairs. Variations of the Yukawa coupling strength lead to modified distributions for $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production. In particular, the distributions of the mass of the $\mathrm{t\ba…
An overview of recent measurements of differential top quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) production cross sections is presented, including results in boosted topologies and results both at parton and particle level. The first measurements of differential single top quark t-channel production cross sections in proton-proton collisions are as well presented. The results are obtained using data collected with the ATLAS and CMS experiments in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV. References to the latest results by the Tevatron experiments are also given. The data are compa…
Results are presented for an extraction of the top quark Yukawa coupling from top quark-antiquark ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) kinematic distributions in the lepton plus jets final state in proton-proton collisions, based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.8 fb$^{-1}$. Corrections from weak boson exchange, including Higgs bosons, between the top quarks can produce large distortions of differential distributions near the energy threshold of $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production. Therefore, precise measurements of these di…

Inclusive and differential measurements of top-quark pair production cross-sections from ATLAS and CMS are presented in the resolved and boosted kinematic regions. The cross-sections are measured as a function of various kinematic observables of the top quarks, the jets and leptons of the event final state.
