The buoyancy-induced parallel flow in a vertical cylindrical porous layer is analysed. A radial thermal gradient caused by a uniformly distributed heat source is assumed to induce the buoyant flow. The layer boundaries are modelled as isothermal and permeable to an external fluid reservoir. The onset of the convective instability is analysed by linearising the governing equations for the perturbations. The governing parameters driving the instability are the heat-source Rayleigh number and the ratio between the internal radius and the external radius. Neutral stability curves and the critical values of the Rayleigh number, the perturbation wave number and the angular frequency are computed numerically. It is shown that axisymmetric modes form the most dangerous mode of instability.
The basic stationary buoyant flow in a vertical annular porous passage induced by a boundary temperature difference is investigated. The vertical cylindrical boundaries are considered both isothermal and permeable to external fluid reservoirs. There exists a stationary parallel velocity field with a zero flow rate and pure conduction heat transfer. Its linear stability is analysed with normal mode perturbations of the pressure and temperature fields. The transition to convective instability is caused by the basic horizontal temperature gradient. Hence, its nature differs from that of the usual…
The flow of micropolar fluid through a membrane modeled as a swarm of solid cylindrical particles with porous layer using the cell model technique is considered. The flow is directed perpendicular to the axis of the cylinders. Boundary value problem involves traditional conditions of velocities and stresses continuity, no-stress and no-couple stress / no-spin condition on hypothetical cell surface. The problem was solved analytically. The influence of micropolar and porous medium parameters on hydrodynamic permeability of a membrane has been studied.
The present paper considers the flow of micropolar fluid through a membrane modeled as a swarm of solid cylindrical particles with porous layer using the cell model technique. Traditional boundary conditions on hypothetical cell surface were added with an additional condition: the no spin condition / no couple stress condition. Expressions for velocity and microrotation vector components have been obtained analytically. Effect of various parameters such as particle volume fraction, permeability parameter, micropolarity number etc. on hydrodynamic permeability of membrane has been discussed.
Theoretical and experimental investigations of water vapor interaction with porous materials are carried out both at the macro level and at the micro level. At the macro level, the influence of the arrangement structure of individual pores on the processes of water vapor interaction with porous material as a continuous medium is studied. At the micro level, it is very interesting to investigate the dependence of the characteristics of the water vapor interaction with porous media on the geometry and dimensions of the individual pore. In this paper, a study was carried out by means of mathemati…
The capillary flow of a ferrofluid in a single cylindrical capillary tube and through a sandy porous medium under the action of a non-uniform magnetic field is studied experimentally. The dynamics of the capillary rise and the static case have been considered. It has been shown that the non-uniform magnetic field with upward directed gradient accelerates the capillary rise; contrary, the non-uniform magnetic field with downward directed gradient decelerates the capillary rise. Time dependences of the ferrofluid height and maximum reachable height of ferrofluid have been analyzed. The method of…
The linear stability of buoyant parallel flow in a vertical porous layer with an annular cross-section is investigated. The vertical cylindrical boundaries are kept at different uniform temperatures and they are assumed to be impermeable. The emergence of linear instability by convection cells is excluded on the basis of a numerical solution of the linearised governing equations. This result extends to the annular geometry the well-known Gill's theorem regarding the impossibility of convective instability in a vertical porous plane slab whose boundaries are impermeable and isothermal with diff…
We present comprehensive numerical studies of the motion of a buoyant or a nearly neutrally buoyant nano-sized ellipsoidal particle in a fluid filled cylindrical tube without or with the presence of imposed pressure gradient (weak Poiseuille flow). The Fluctuating hydrodynamics approach and the Deterministic method are both employed. We ensure that the fluctuation-dissipation relation and the principle of thermal equipartition of energy are both satisfied. The major focus is on the effect of the confining boundary. Results for the velocity and angular velocity autocorrelations (VACF and AVACF)…
The temporal stability of an inviscid flow through cylindrical geometries with a porous wall subjected to non-axisymmetric perturbations is investigated in the present work using an unsteady Darcy equation for the porous layer. An expression for the perturbation energy exchange term between the fluid and porous layers is derived by integrating the perturbation equation for the porous layer which is then used to prove the propositions. The necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the instability in flows through cylindrical geometries is shown to be $\frac{d}{dr} \left( \frac{r \…
We perform direct numerical simulations of the flow through a model of a deformable porous medium. Our model is a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice, with defects, of soft elastic cylindrical pillars, with elastic shear modulus $G$, immersed in a liquid. We use a two-phase approach: the liquid phase is a viscous fluid and the solid phase is modeled as an incompressible viscoelastic material, whose complete nonlinear structural response is considered. We observe that the Darcy flux ($q$) is a nonlinear function -- steeper than linear -- of the pressure-difference ($ΔP$) across the medium. Furthe…
The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to study the canonical problem of steady laminar flow through a narrow two-dimensional channel blocked by a tight-fitting finite-length highly permeable porous obstacle. We investigate the behaviour of the local flow close to the interface between the single-phase and porous regions (governed by the incompressible Navier--Stokes and Darcy flow equations, respectively). We solve for the flow in these inner regions in the limits of low and high Reynolds number, facilitating an understanding of the nature of the transition from Poiseuille to plu…
Microscale turbulence in porous media is a new physical phenomenon that exhibits unique properties unlike those in classical turbulence flows. At low values of porosity, the surface forces on the solid obstacles compete with the inertial force of the fluid flow to result in the formation of flow instabilities. In this paper, we report the origin and mechanism of a symmetry-breaking phenomenon in periodic porous media that causes a deviation in the direction of the mean flow from that of the applied pressure gradient. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to simulate turbulent flow in a homogeneo…
The apparent gas permeability of the porous medium is an important parameter in the prediction of unconventional gas production, which was first investigated systematically by Klinkenberg in 1941 and found to increase with the reciprocal mean gas pressure (or equivalently, the Knudsen number). Although the underlying rarefaction effects are well-known, the reason that the correction factor in Klinkenberg's famous equation decreases when the Knudsen number increases has not been fully understood. Most of the studies idealize the porous medium as a bundle of straight cylindrical tubes, however, …

Transport of liquid mixtures through porous membranes is central to processes such as desalination, chemical separations and energy harvesting, with ultrathin membranes made from novel 2D nanomaterials showing exceptional promise. Here we derive, for the first time, general equations for the solution and solute fluxes through a circular pore in an ultrathin planar membrane induced by a solute concentration gradient. We show that the equations accurately capture the fluid fluxes measured in finite-element numerical simulations for weak solute-membrane interactions. We also derive scaling laws f…
