Linear stability of synchronized states in networks of delay-coupled oscillators depends on the type of interaction, the network and oscillator properties. For inert oscillator response, found ubiquitously from biology to engineering, states with time-dependent frequencies can arise. These generate side bands in the frequency spectrum or lead to chaotic dynamics. Stability analysis is difficult due to delay-induced multistability and has only been available via numerical approaches. We derive criteria and conditions that enable fast and robust analytical linear stability analysis based on the system parameters. These apply to arbitrary network topologies, identical oscillators and delays.
We study the synchronization of oscillators with inertias and phase shifts, namely the second-order Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model. Using the self-consistent method, we find that the effect of inertia is the introduction of effective phase shifts. The discontinuous synchronization transition of the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model changes to a continuous one when the value of inertia is small. In addition, we find a new synchronization process, in which with increasing coupling strength the system reaches an oscillating state instead of complete synchronization due to the cross-effect of phase shifts and in…
A model for synchronization of globally coupled phase oscillators including ``inertial'' effects is analyzed. In such a model, both oscillator frequencies and phases evolve in time. Stationary solutions include incoherent (unsynchronized) and synchronized states of the oscillator population. Assuming a Lorentzian distribution of oscillator natural frequencies, $g(Ω)$, both larger inertia or larger frequency spread stabilize the incoherent solution, thereby making harder to synchronize the population. In the limiting case $g(Ω)=δ(Ω)$, the critical coupling becomes independent of inertia. A rich…
Today, complex networks have attracted increasing attention from various fields of science and engineering. It has been demonstrated that many complex networks display various synchronization phenomena. In this paper, we introduce a time-varying complex dynamical network model. We then further investigate its synchronization phenomenon and prove several network synchronization theorems. Especially, we show that synchronization of such a time-varying dynamical network is completely determined by the inner-coupling matrix, and the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the coupling co…

Motivated by the operation of myogenic (self-oscillatory) insect flight muscle, we study a model consisting of a large number of identical oscillatory contractile elements joined in a chain, whose end is attached to a damped mass-spring oscillator. When the inertial load is small, the serial coupling favors an antisynchronous state in which the extension of one oscillator is compensated by the contraction of another, in order to preserve the total length. However, a sufficiently massive load can sychronize the oscillators and can even induce oscillation in situations where isolated elements wo…
Explosive synchronization (ES) of coupled oscillators on networks is shown to be originated from existence of correlation between natural frequencies of oscillators and degrees of corresponding nodes. Here, we demonstrate that ES is a generic feature of multiplex network of second-order Kuramoto oscillators and can exist in absence of a frequency-degree correlation. A monoplex network of second-order Kuramoto oscillators bearing homogeneous (heterogeneous) degree-distribution is known to display the first-order (second-order) transition to synchronization. We report that multiplexing of two su…
We investigate synchronization in networks of Kuramoto oscillators with inertia. More specifically, we introduce a rewiring algorithm consisting basically in a {\em hill climb} scheme in which the edges of the network are swapped in order to enhance its synchronization capacity. We show that the the synchrony-optimized networks generated by our algorithm have some interesting topological and dynamical properties. In particular, they typically exhibit an anticipation of the synchronization onset and are more robust against certain types of perturbations. We consider synthetic random networks an…
In networks of coupled oscillators, it is of interest to understand how interaction topology affects synchronization. Many studies have gained key insights into this question by studying the classic Kuramoto oscillator model on static networks. However, new questions arise when network structure is time-varying or when the oscillator system is multistable, the latter of which can occur when an inertial term is added to the Kuramoto model. While the consequences of evolving topology and multistability on collective behavior have been examined separately, real-world systems such as gene regulato…
This brief paper further investigates the locally and globally adaptive synchronization of an uncertain complex dynamical network. Several network synchronization criteria are deduced. Especially, our hypotheses and designed adaptive controllers for network synchronization are rather simple in form. It is very useful for future practical engineering design. Moreover, numerical simulations are also given to show the effectiveness of our synchronization approaches.
We study synchronization of oscillators that are indirectly coupled through their interaction with an environment. We give criteria for the stability or instability of a synchronized oscillation. Using these criteria we investigate synchronization of systems of oscillators which are weakly coupled, in the sense that the influence of the oscillators on the environment is weak. We prove that arbitrarily weak coupling will synchronize the oscillators, provided that this coupling is of the 'right' sign. We illustrate our general results by applications to a model of coupled GnRH neuron oscillators…
Synchronization is a phenomenon where interacting particles lock their motion and display non-trivial dynamics. Despite intense efforts studying synchronization in systems without clear classical limits, no comprehensive theory has been found. We develop such a general theory based on novel necessary and sufficient algebraic criteria for persistently oscillating eigenmodes (limit cycles) of time-independent quantum master equations. We show these eigenmodes must be quantum coherent and give an exact analytical solution for all such dynamics in terms of a dynamical symmetry algebra. Using our t…
We prove that any non zero inertia, however small, is able to change the nature of the synchronization transition in Kuramoto-like models, either from continuous to discontinuous, or from discontinuous to continuous. This result is obtained through an unstable manifold expansion in the spirit of J.D. Crawford, which features singularities in the vicinity of the bifurcation. Far from being unwanted artifacts, these singularities actually control the qualitative behavior of the system. Our numerical tests fully support this picture.
In this paper, the synchronization in a hyper-network of coupled dynamical systems is investigated for the first time. An evolving hyper-network model is proposed for better describing some complex systems. A concept of joint degree is introduced, and the evolving mechanism of hyper-network is given with respect to the joint degree. The hyper-degree distribution of the proposed evolving hyper-network is derived based on a rate equation method and obeys a power law distribution. Furthermore, the synchronization in a hyper-network of coupled dynamical systems is investigated for the first time. …
We discuss the appearance of oscillatory and standing wave states in second-order oscillator networks showing that it is a special case of a more general mechanism involving secondary synchronized clusters induced by inertia. Using a time-periodic mean-field ansatz, we find a bistable mechanism involving a stable fixed point and an invariant curve of an appropriate Poincaré map. The bistability and the devil's staircase associated to the rotation number on the invariant curve provide an explanation for the appearance of the secondary synchronized clusters. The effect of inertias in the self-or…
We study the synchronization and stability of power grids within the Kuramoto phase oscillator model with inertia with a bimodal frequency distribution representing the generators and the loads. We identify critical nodes through solitary frequency deviations and Lyapunov vectors corresponding to unstable Lyapunov exponents. To cure dangerous deviations from synchronization we propose time-delayed feedback control, which is an efficient control concept in nonlinear dynamic systems. Different control strategies are tested and compared with respect to the minimum number of controlled nodes requi…
It is known that explosive synchronization (ES) in an isolated network of Kuramoto oscillators with inertia is significantly enhanced by the presence of time delay. Here we show that time delay in one layer of the multiplex network governs the transition to synchronization and ES in the other layers. We found that a single layer with time-delayed intra-layer coupling, depending on the values of time delay, experiences a different type of transition to synchronization, e.g., ES or continuous, and the same type of transition is incorporated simultaneously in other layer(s) as well. Hence, a suit…

In this paper, we utilize event-triggered coupling configuration to realize synchronization of linearly coupled dynamical systems. Here, the diffusion couplings are set up from the latest observations of the nodes of its neighborhood and the next observation time is triggered by the proposed criteria based on the local neighborhood information as well. Two scenarios are considered: continuous monitoring, that each node can observe its neighborhood's instantaneous states, and discrete monitoring, that each node can only obtain its neighborhood's states at the same time point when the coupling t…
To date, explosive synchronization (ES) is shown to be originated from either degree-frequency correlation or inertia of phase oscillators. Of late, it has been shown that ES can be induced in a network by adaptively controlled phase oscillators. Here we show that ES is a generic phenomenon and can occur in any network by appropriately multiplexing it with another layer. We devise an approach which leads to the occurrence of ES with hysteresis loop in a network upon its multiplexing with a negatively coupled (or inhibitory) layer. We discuss the impact of various structural properties of posit…
We consider the inertial Kuramoto model of $N$ globally coupled oscillators characterized by both their phase and angular velocity, in which there is a time delay in the interaction between the oscillators. Besides the academic interest, we show that the model can be related to a network of phase-locked loops widely used in electronic circuits for generating a stable frequency at multiples of an input frequency. We study the model for a generic choice of the natural frequency distribution of the oscillators, to elucidate how a synchronized phase bifurcates from an incoherent phase as the coupl…
Inter-layer synchronization is a dynamical state occurring in multi-layer networks composed of identical nodes. The state corresponds to have all layers synchronized, with nodes in each layer which do not necessarily evolve in unison. So far, the study of such a solution has been restricted to the case in which all layers had an identical connectivity structure. When layers are not identical, the inter-layer synchronous state is no longer a stable solution of the system. Nevertheless, when layers differ in just a few links, an approximate treatment is still feasible, and allows one to gather i…
Spontaneous synchronization is a remarkable collective effect observed in nature, whereby a population of oscillating units, which have diverse natural frequencies and are in weak interaction with one another, evolves to spontaneously exhibit collective oscillations at a common frequency. The Kuramoto model provides the basic analytical framework to study spontaneous synchronization. The model comprises limit-cycle oscillators with distributed natural frequencies interacting through a mean-field coupling. Although more than forty years have passed since its introduction, the model continues to…
The aim of this paper is to investigate complex dynamic networks which can model high-voltage power grids with renewable, fluctuating energy sources. For this purpose we use the Kuramoto model with inertia to model the network of power plants and consumers. In particular, we analyse the synchronization transition of networks of $N$ phase oscillators with inertia (rotators) whose natural frequencies are bimodally distributed, corresponding to the distribution of generator and consumer power. First, we start from globally coupled networks whose links are successively diluted, resulting in a rand…
Synchronization plays a fundamental role in healthy cognitive and motor function. However, how synchronization depends on the interplay between local dynamics, coupling and topology and how prone to synchronization a network with given topological organization is are still poorly understood issues. To investigate the synchronizability of both anatomical and functional brain networks various studies resorted to the Master Stability Function (MSF) formalism, an elegant tool which allows analysing the stability of synchronous states in a dynamical system consisting of many coupled oscillators. He…
