Dense depth estimation and 3D reconstruction of a surgical scene are crucial steps in computer assisted surgery. Recent work has shown that depth estimation from a stereo images pair could be solved with convolutional neural networks. However, most recent depth estimation models were trained on datasets with per-pixel ground truth. Such data is especially rare for laparoscopic imaging, making it hard to apply supervised depth estimation to real surgical applications. To overcome this limitation, we propose SADepth, a new self-supervised depth estimation method based on Generative Adversarial Networks. It consists of an encoder-decoder generator and a discriminator to incorporate geometry constraints during training. Multi-scale outputs from the generator help to solve the local minima caused by the photometric reprojection loss, while the adversarial learning improves the framework generation quality. Extensive experiments on two public datasets show that SADepth outperforms recent state-of-the-art unsupervised methods by a large margin, and reduces the gap between supervised and unsupervised depth estimation in laparoscopic images.
Laparoscopic surgery uses a thin tube with a camera called a laparoscope, which is inserted into the abdomen through a small incision in the skin during surgery. This allows to a surgeon to see inside of the body without causing significant injury to the patient. These characteristics make laparoscopy a widely used technique. In laparoscopic surgery, image quality can be severely degraded by surgical smoke caused by the use of tissue dissection tools which reduces the visibility of the observed organs and tissues. This lack of visibility increases the possibility of errors and surgery time wit…

Generative Adversarial Networks have been employed successfully to generate high-resolution augmented images of size 1024^2. Although the augmented images generated are unprecedented, the training time of the model is exceptionally high. Conventional GAN requires training of both Discriminator as well as the Generator. In Progressive GAN, which is the current state-of-the-art GAN for image augmentation, instead of training the GAN all at once, a new concept of progressing growing of Discriminator and Generator simultaneously, was proposed. Although the lower stages such as 4x4 and 8x8 train ra…

The purpose of this work is to contribute to the state of the art of deep-learning methods for diffeomorphic registration. We propose an adversarial learning LDDMM method for pairs of 3D mono-modal images based on Generative Adversarial Networks. The method is inspired by the recent literature for deformable image registration with adversarial learning. We combine the best performing generative, discriminative, and adversarial ingredients from the state of the art within the LDDMM paradigm. We have successfully implemented two models with the stationary and the EPDiff-constrained non-stationar…

Semantic segmentation profits from deep learning and has shown its possibilities in handling the graphical data from the on-site inspection. As a result, visual damage in the facade images should be detected. Attention mechanism and generative adversarial networks are two of the most popular strategies to improve the quality of semantic segmentation. With specific focuses on these two strategies, this paper adopts U-net, a representative convolutional neural network, as the primary network and presents a comparative study in two steps. First, cell images are utilized to respectively determine …
We give an overview of the different rendering methods and we demonstrate that the use of a Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) for Global Illumination (GI) gives a superior quality rendered image to that of a rasterisations image. We utilise the Pix2Pix architecture and specify the hyper-parameters and methodology used to mimic ray-traced images from a set of input features. We also demonstrate that the GANs quality is comparable to the quality of the ray-traced images, but is able to produce the image, at a fraction of the time.

Anyone can take a photo, but not everybody has the ability to retouch their pictures and obtain result close to professional. Since it is not possible to ask experts to retouch thousands of pictures, we thought about teaching a piece of software how to reproduce the work of those said experts. This study aims to explore the possibility to use deep learning methods and more specifically, generative adversarial networks (GANs), to mimic artists' retouching and find which one of the studied models provides the best results.

The working of neural networks following the adversarial philosophy to create a generative model is a fascinating field. Multiple papers have already explored the architectural aspect and proposed systems with potentially good results however, very few papers are available which implement it on a real-world example. Traditionally, people use the famous MNIST dataset as a Hello, World! example for implementing Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). Instead of going the standard route of using handwritten digits, this paper uses the Devanagari script which has a more complex structure. As there …
This paper aims to contribute in bench-marking the automatic polyp segmentation problem using generative adversarial networks framework. Perceiving the problem as an image-to-image translation task, conditional generative adversarial networks are utilized to generate masks conditioned by the images as inputs. Both generator and discriminator are convolution neural networks based. The model achieved 0.4382 on Jaccard index and 0.611 as F2 score.

Generative networks are fundamentally different in their aim and methods compared to CNNs for classification, segmentation, or object detection. They have initially not been meant to be an image analysis tool, but to produce naturally looking images. The adversarial training paradigm has been proposed to stabilize generative methods, and has proven to be highly successful -- though by no means from the first attempt. This chapter gives a basic introduction into the motivation for Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and traces the path of their success by abstracting the basic task and worki…

One of the most interesting challenges in Artificial Intelligence is to train conditional generators which are able to provide labeled adversarial samples drawn from a specific distribution. In this work, a new framework is presented to train a deep conditional generator by placing a classifier in parallel with the discriminator and back propagate the classification error through the generator network. The method is versatile and is applicable to any variations of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) implementation, and also gives superior results compared to similar methods.
Compensating scarce measurements by inferring them from computational models is a way to address ill-posed inverse problems. We tackle Limited Angle Tomography by completing the set of acquisitions using a generative model and prior-knowledge about the scanned object. Using a Generative Adversarial Network as model and Computer-Assisted Design data as shape prior, we demonstrate a quantitative and qualitative advantage of our technique over other state-of-the-art methods. Inferring a substantial number of consecutive missing measurements, we offer an alternative to other image inpainting techn…
We propose the use of unsupervised learning to train projection networks that project onto the latent space of an already trained generator. We apply our method to a trained StyleGAN, and use our projection network to perform image super-resolution and clustering of images into semantically identifiable groups.
Deep learning techniques, especially Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have significantly improved image inpainting and image-to-image translation tasks over the past few years. To the best of our knowledge, the problem of combining the image inpainting task with the multi-modality image-to-image translation remains intact. In this paper, we propose a model to address this problem. The model will be evaluated on combined night-to-day image translation and inpainting, along with promising qualitative and quantitative results.
This is a tutorial and survey paper on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), adversarial autoencoders, and their variants. We start with explaining adversarial learning and the vanilla GAN. Then, we explain the conditional GAN and DCGAN. The mode collapse problem is introduced and various methods, including minibatch GAN, unrolled GAN, BourGAN, mixture GAN, D2GAN, and Wasserstein GAN, are introduced for resolving this problem. Then, maximum likelihood estimation in GAN are explained along with f-GAN, adversarial variational Bayes, and Bayesian GAN. Then, we cover feature matching in GAN, InfoG…
Single pixel imaging can reconstruct two-dimensional images of a scene with only a single-pixel detector. It has been widely used for imaging in non-visible bandwidth (e.g., near-infrared and X-ray) where focal-plane array sensors are challenging to be manufactured. In this paper, we propose a generative adversarial network based reconstruction algorithm for single pixel imaging, which demonstrates efficient reconstruction in 10ms and higher quality. We verify the proposed method with both synthetic and real-world experiments, and demonstrate a good quality of reconstruction of a real-world pl…

For each category, a literature survey is given, which covers discussions of the network architecture designs, highlights important contributions and identifies specific challenges.
We present an optimization algorithm based on a deep convolution generative adversarial network (DCGAN) to design a 2-Dimensional optical cloak. The optical cloak consists in a shell of uniform and isotropical dielectric material, and the cloaking is achieved via the geometry of the shell. We use a feedback loop from the solutions of the DCGAN to successively retrain it and improve its ability to predict and find optimal geometries.
A multimode fiber represents the ultimate limit in miniaturization of imaging endoscopes. Here we propose a fiber imaging approach employing compressive sensing with a data-driven machine learning framework. We implement a generative adversarial network for image reconstruction without relying on a sample sparsity constraint. The proposed method outperforms the conventional compressive imaging algorithms in terms of image quality and noise robustness. We experimentally demonstrate speckle-based imaging below the diffraction limit at a sub-Nyquist speed through a multimode fiber.
Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have been shown vulnerable to Test-Time Evasion attacks (TTEs, or adversarial examples), which, by making small changes to the input, alter the DNN's decision. We propose an unsupervised attack detector on DNN classifiers based on class-conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). We model the distribution of clean data conditioned on the predicted class label by an Auxiliary Classifier GAN (AC-GAN). Given a test sample and its predicted class, three detection statistics are calculated based on the AC-GAN Generator and Discriminator. Experiments on image clas…
We introduce a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) approach to generate cloud reflectance fields (CRFs) conditioned on large scale meteorological variables such as sea surface temperature and relative humidity. We show that our trained model can generate realistic CRFs from the corresponding meteorological observations, which represents a step towards a data-driven framework for stochastic cloud parameterization.
Deep compressed sensing assumes the data has sparse representation in a latent space, i.e., it is intrinsically of low-dimension. The original data is assumed to be mapped from a low-dimensional space through a low-to-high-dimensional generator. In this work, we propound how to design such a low-to-high dimensional deep learning-based generator suiting for compressed sensing, while satisfying robustness to universal adversarial perturbations in the latent domain. We also justify why the noise is considered in the latent space. The work is also buttressed with theoretical analysis on the robust…
There is a consensus that turbulence-free images cannot be obtained by conventional computational ghost imaging (CGI) because the CGI is only a classic simulation, which does not satisfy the conditions of turbulence-free imaging. In this article, we first report a turbulence-immune CGI method based on a multi-scale generative adversarial network (MsGAN). Here, the conventional CGI framework is not changed, but the conventional CGI coincidence measurement algorithm is optimized by an MsGAN. Thus, the satisfactory turbulence-free ghost image can be reconstructed by training the network, and the …
Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (ESRGAN) is a perceptual-driven approach for single image super resolution that is able to produce photorealistic images. Despite the visual quality of these generated images, there is still room for improvement. In this fashion, the model is extended to further improve the perceptual quality of the images. We have designed a novel block to replace the one used by the original ESRGAN. Moreover, we introduce noise inputs to the generator network in order to exploit stochastic variation. The resulting images present more realistic textures…

Conditional generators learn the data distribution for each class in a multi-class scenario and generate samples for a specific class given the right input from the latent space. In this work, a method known as "Versatile Auxiliary Classifier with Generative Adversarial Network" for multi-class scenarios is presented. In this technique, the Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN)'s generator is turned into a conditional generator by placing a multi-class classifier in parallel with the discriminator network and backpropagate the classification error through the generator. This technique is versa…
Deep learning-based image reconstruction methods have achieved promising results across multiple MRI applications. However, most approaches require large-scale fully-sampled ground truth data for supervised training. Acquiring fully-sampled data is often either difficult or impossible, particularly for dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE), 3D cardiac cine, and 4D flow. We present a deep learning framework for MRI reconstruction without any fully-sampled data using generative adversarial networks. We test the proposed method in two scenarios: retrospectively undersampled fast spin echo knee exams…
This paper takes on the problem of transferring the style of cartoon images to real-life photographic images by implementing previous work done by CartoonGAN. We trained a Generative Adversial Network(GAN) on over 60 000 images from works by Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli. To evaluate our results, we conducted a qualitative survey comparing our results with two state-of-the-art methods. 117 survey results indicated that our model on average outranked state-of-the-art methods on cartoon-likeness.
