Atomic layers deposited on semiconductor substrates introduce a platform for the realization of the extended electronic Hubbard model, where the consideration of electronic repulsion beyond the onsite term is paramount. Recently, the onset of superconductivity at 4.7K has been reported in the hole-doped triangular lattice of tin atoms on a silicon substrate. Through renormalization group methods designed for weak and intermediate coupling, we investigate the nature of the superconducting instability in hole-doped Sn/Si(111). We find that the extended Hubbard nature of interactions is crucial to yield triplet pairing, which is f-wave (p-wave) for moderate (higher) hole doping. In light of persisting challenges to tailor triplet pairing in an electronic material, our finding promises to pave unprecedented ways for engineering unconventional triplet superconductivity.
We analyze superconducting instabilities in 3D and 2D extended Hubbard model with Coulomb repulsion between electrons on neighboring sites in the limit of low electron density ($n_{el} \rightarrow 0$) on simple cubic (square) lattice. We show that in a realistic strong-coupling case $U\gg V\gg W$ ($U$ and $V$ are the onsite and the intersite Coulomb repulsions, $W$ the bandwidth) the main SC instability corresponds to the p-wave pairing and in the leading order is correctly described by the equations obtained earlier in the absence of the intersite Coulomb interaction V=0.
We report magnetic properties of epitaxial thin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3 deposited on the cleaved ab surface of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. The films exhibit ferromagnetic transition near 160 K as in the bulk SrRuO3, although the films are under 1.7% compressive strain. The observed magnetization is even higher than that of the bulk SrRuO3. In addition, we newly found that the magnetization relaxation after field removal is strongly anisotropic: two relaxation processes are involved when magnetic domains are aligned along the ab-plane.
In order to probe the effect of charge fluctuations on triplet pairing, we study the pairing symmetry in the one-band Hubbard model having the off-site Coulomb repulsion ($V$) on top of the on-site repulsion as a model for the $γ$ band of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, a strong candidate for triplet pairing superconductor. The result, obtained with the dynamical cluster approximation combined with the quantum Monte-Carlo method, and confirmed from the fluctuation exchange approximation, shows that while $d_{x^2-y^2}$-pairing dominates over $p$ in the absence of $V$, introduction of $V$ makes $p_{x+y}$ and $d_…
A possible mechanism for the horizontal line nodes in triplet superconductor, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, is proposed. We consider the interlayer Coulomb interaction, as well as the on-site Coulomb repulsion, between electrons in different bands. In the second order perturbation in the interband interaction, the effective interaction becomes dependent on $\cos \frac{q_z}{2}$, resulting in the horizontal line nodes.
The pairing symmetry in the electron mechanism for superconductivity is explored when charge fluctuations coexist with spin fluctuations. The extended Hubbard model is adopted to obtain, with the fluctuation exchange approximation, a phase diagram against the on-site Coulomb repulsion U and the off-site repulsion V for the square lattice with second-neighbor hopping t'. We have found that (i) for large U(>9) a triplet superconductivity with a sin(kx+ky) symmetry can appear just below the charge density wave phase. The pairing is degenerate with sin(kx-ky), so a chiral sin(kx+ky)+isin(kx-ky) th…
Superconductivity in the quasi-one-dimensional material Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ is analyzed based on a multiorbital extended Hubbard model. We found strong charge fluctuations at two different momenta ${\bf Q_1}$ and ${\bf Q_2}$ giving rise to two different charge ordered phases. Evaluating the superconducting vertex, we found superconductivity near strong charge fluctuations at ${\bf Q_1}$. The order parameter has the p-wave symmetry with nodes on the Fermi surface. The metallic state displays a characteristic charge collective mode ${\bf Q_1}$ due to nesting and for on-site Hubbard repulsio…
The possibility of inducing topological superconductivity with cuprate high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) is studied for various heterostructures. We first consider a ballistic planar junction between a HTSC and a metallic ferromagnet. We assume that inversion symmetry breaking at the tunnel barrier gives rise to Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the barrier and allows equal-spin triplet superconductivity to exist in the ferromagnet. Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are obtained by explicitly modeling the barrier, and taking account of the transport anisotropy in the HTSC. By making use of the …
To investigate relations between long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order, superconductivity and two particle triplet collective excitations we consider a modified two dimensional t-J model at doping close to half filling. The model includes additional hopping t'' and nearest sites Coulomb repulsion V. The additional parameters allow us to control closeness of the system to the AF instability. We demonstrate the possibility of co-existence of long-range AF order and d-g-wave superconductivity. In the phase with long-range AF order we find, analytically, superconducting gaps and spin wave renorm…
Despite being of fundamental importance and potential interest for topological quantum computing, spin-triplet superconductors remain rare in solid state materials after decades of research. In this work, we present a general mechanism for spin-triplet superconductivity in multi-band systems, where a non-retarded pairing interaction between conduction electrons is produced by their electronic repulsion to a third-electron undergoing a virtual interband transition. Our theory is analytically controlled by an interband hybridization parameter, and explicitly demonstrated in doped band insulators…
Stimulated by the success of graphene and its emerging Dirac physics, the quest for versatile and tunable electronic properties in atomically thin systems has led to the discovery of various chemical classes of 2D compounds. In particular, honeycomb lattices of group-IV elements, such as silicene and germanene, have been found experimentally. Whether it is a necessity of synthesis or a desired feature for application purposes, most 2D materials demand a supporting substrate. In this work, we highlight the constructive impact of substrates to enable the realization of exotic electronic quantum …
We study a Hubbard hamiltonian, including a quite general nearest-neighbor interaction, parametrized by repulsion V, exchange interactions Jz, Jperp, bond-charge interaction X and hopping of pairs W. The case of correlated hopping, in which the hopping between nearest neighbors depends upon the occupation of the two sites involved, is also described by the model for sufficiently weak interactions. We study the model in one dimension with usual continuum-limit field theory techniques, and determine the phase diagram. For arbitrary filling, we find a very simple necessary condition for the exist…
We investigate the superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ on the basis of the three-dimensional three-band Hubbard model. We propose a model with Coulomb interactions among the electrons on the nearest-neighbor Ru sites. In our model the intersite Coulomb repulsion and exchange coupling can work as the effective interaction for the spin-triplet paring. This effective interaction is enhanced by the band hybridization, which is mediated by the interlayer transfers. We investigate the possibility of this mechanism in the ground state and find that the orbital dependent spin-triplet superconductivity …
Using a newly developed first-principles Wannier-states approach that takes into account large on-site Coulomb repulsion, we derive the effective low-energy interacting Hamiltonians for several prototypical high-$T_c$ superconducting cuprates. The material dependence is found to originate primarily from the different energy of the apical atom $p_z$ state. Specifically, the general properties of the low-energy hole state, namely the Zhang-Rice singlet, are significantly modified by a triplet state associated with this $p_z$ state, via additional intra-sublattice hoppings, nearest-neighbor "supe…
We present details of a continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo algorithm for the screened Hubbard-Froehlich bipolaron. We simulate the bipolaron in one dimension with arbitrary interaction range in the presence of Coulomb repulsion, computing the effective mass, binding energy, total number of phonons associated with the bipolaron, mass isotope exponent and bipolaron radius in a comprehensive survey of the parameter space. We discuss the role of the range of the electron-phonon interaction, demonstrating the evolution from Holstein to Froehlich bipolarons and we compare the properties of bipolaro…
We investigate pairing symmetry and a transition temperature in a quasi-one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model. We solve the Eliashberg equation using the third-order perturbation expansion with respect to the on-site repulsion $U$. We find that when the electron number density is shifted from the half-filled, a transition into unconventional superconductivity is expected. When one dimensionality is weak, a spin-singlet state is favorable. By contrast, when one dimensionality is strong and electron number density is far from the half-filled, a spin-triplet state is stabilized. Finally, we dis…

In order to study the pairing symmetry in non-centrosymmetric superconductors, we solve the linearized Eliashberg's equation on the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the presence of the Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) within the random phase approximation. In the presence of the RSOC, three types of pairing symmetries appear in the phase diagram with respect to the on-site Coulomb repulsion U and off-site one V. Each of pairing symmetries is admixture of spin-singlet and -triplet ones. On the basis of analytical study, it is found that the admixture of spin-singlet and -triplet …
Different models for doping of two-orbital chains with mobile $S=1/2$ fermions and strong, ferromagnetic (FM) Hund's rule couplings stabilizing the S=1 spins are investigated by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. The competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) and FM order leads to a rich phase diagram with a narrow FM region for weak AF couplings and strongly enhanced triplet pairing correlations. Without a level difference between the orbitals, the spin gap persists upon doping, whereas gapless spin excitations are generated by interactions among itinerant polarons in the pr…
Stimulated by the recent finding of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$.1.3H$_2$O superconductor, we investigate superconducting instabilities on a 2D triangular lattice in the repulsive Hubbard model. Using the third-order perturbation expansion with respect to the on-site repulsion $U$, we evaluate the linearized Dyson-Gor'kov equation. We find that an $f$-wave spin-triplet pairing is the most stable in a wide range of the next nearest neighbor hopping integral $t'$ and an electron number density $n$. The introduction of $t'$ is crucial to adjust the van Hove singularities to the neighborhood of the Fermi su…
We present a systematic theory of acoustic-phonon-mediated superconductivity, which incorporates Coulomb repulsion, explaining the recent experiment in Bernal bilayer graphene under a large displacement field. The acoustic-phonon mechanism predicts that $s$-wave spin-singlet and $f$-wave spin-triplet pairings are degenerate and dominant. Assuming a spin-polarized valley-unpolarized normal state, we obtain $f$-wave spin-triplet superconductivity with a $T_c\sim 20$ mK near $n_e=-0.6\times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ for hole doping, in approximate agreement with the experiment. We further predict the ex…
We investigate pairing symmetry and transition temperature in the trellis-lattice Hubbard model. We solve the Éliashberg equation using the third-order perturbation theory with respect to the on-site repulsion $U$. We find that a spin-singlet state is very stable in a wide range of parameters. On the other hand, when the electron number density is shifted from the half-filled state and the band gap between two bands is small, a spin-triplet superconductivity is expected. Finally, we discuss a possibility of unconventional superconductivity and pairing symmetry in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{…
This review presents a summary and evaluations of the superconducting properties of the layered ruthenate Sr2RuO4 as they are known in the autumn of 2011. This paper appends the main progress that has been made since the preceding review by Mackenzie and Maeno was published in 2003. Here, special focus is placed on the critical evaluation of the spin-triplet, odd-parity pairing scenario applied to Sr2RuO4. After an introduction to superconductors with possible odd-parity pairing, accumulated evidence for the pairing symmetry of Sr2RuO4 is examined. Then, significant recent progress on the theo…
Motivated by recent discovery of correlated insulating and superconducting behavior in twisted bilayer graphene, we revisit graphene's honeycomb lattice doped close to the van Hove singularity, using the truncated unity functional renormalization group approach. We consider an extended Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice including on-site and nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsions, and nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange and pair hopping interactions. By varying the strength of the nearest-neighbor exchange coupling and Coulomb repulsion as free parameters, we present rich ground-state pha…
The competition between antiferromagnetism and the $d+id$ superconducting state is studied in a model with near and next near neighbour interactions in the absence of any on-site repulsion. A mean field study shows that it is possible to have simultaneous occurrence of an antiferromagnetic and a singlet $d+id$ superconducting state in this model. In addition, such a coexistence generates a triplet $d+id$ superconducting order parameter with centre of mass momentum $Q=(π, π)$ {\it dynamically} having the same orbital symmetry as the singlet superconductor. Inclusion of next nearest neighbour ho…
We show that the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) arising due to the in-plane electric field of the Coulomb repulsion between electrons in a two-dimensional quantum well produces an attractive component in the pair interaction Hamiltonian that depends on the spins and momenta of electrons. If the Rashba SOI constant of the material is high enough the attractive component overcomes the Coulomb repulsion and the centrifugal barrier, which leads to the formation of the two-electron bound states. There are two distinct types of two-electron bound states. The relative bound states are formed by the ele…
Superconductivity found in doped NdNiO$_2$ is puzzling as two local symmetries of doped NiO$_2$ layers compete, with presumably far-reaching implications for the involved mechanism: a cuprate-like regime with Zhang-Rice singlets {\cblue is replaced by local triplet states at realistic values of charge-transfer energy, which would suggest a rather different superconductivity scenario from high-$T_c$ cuprates}. We address this competition by investigating Ni$_4$O$_8$ clusters with periodic boundary conditions in the parameter range relevant for the superconducting nickelates. With increasing val…
We explore the ground-state properties of the two-band Hubbard model with degenerate electronic bands, parametrized by nearest-neighbor hopping $t$, intra- and inter-orbital on-site Coulomb repulsions $U$ and $U^\prime$, and Hund coupling $J$, focusing on the case with $J>0$. Using Jastrow-Slater wave functions, we consider both states with and without magnetic/orbital order. Electron pairing can also be included in the wave function, in order to detect the occurrence of superconductivity for generic electron densities $n$. When no magnetic/orbital order is considered, the Mott transition is c…
Motivated by recent experiments [H. Zhou, \emph{et al.}, Science {\bf 375}, 774 (2022) and S. C. de la Barrera, \emph{et al.}, arXiv:2110.13907], here we propose a general mechanism for valley and/or spin degeneracy lifting of the electronic bands in doped Bernal bilayer graphene, subject to electric displacement ($D$) fields. A $D$-field induced layer polarization (LP), when accompanied by Hubbard repulsion driven layer antiferromagnet (LAF) and next-nearest-neighbor repulsion driven quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) orders, lifts the four-fold degeneracy of electronic bands, yielding a quarter me…
We calculate the effective interaction $W_{eff}$ between two holes added to the ground state of the repulsive three-band Hubbard model. To make contact with Cooper theory and with earlier Hubbard model cluster studies, we first use a perturbative canonical transformation, to generate a two-body Hamiltonian. Then, we extend the results to all orders. The approach is exact in principle, and we obtain a close analytic expression including explicitly the effects of all virtual transitions to 4-body intermediate states. Our scheme naturally lends itself to embody off-site, inter-planar, phonon-medi…
We study the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice, including on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) interactions, at weak couplings. We show that the charge-density-wave phase that is known to occur at half-filling when 4V > U gives way to a d_{xy} -wave superconducting instability away from half-filling, when the Fermi surface is not perfectly nested, and for sufficiently large repulsive and a range of on-site repulsive interaction. In addition, when nesting is further suppressed and in presence of a nearest-neighbor attraction, a triplet time-reversal…
Flat electronic bands can accommodate a plethora of interaction driven quantum phases, since kinetic energy is quenched therein and electronic interactions therefore prevail. Twisted bilayer graphene, near so-called the "magic angles", features \emph{slow} Dirac fermions close to the charge-neutrality point that persist up to high-energies. Starting from a continuum model of slow, but strongly interacting Dirac fermions, we show that with increasing chemical doping away from the charge-neutrality point, a time-reversal symmetry breaking, valley pseudo-spin-triplet, topological $p+ip$ supercond…
We consider the sub-gap physics of a hybrid double-quantum dot Cooper-pair splitter with large single-level spacings, in the presence of tunnelling between the dots and finite Coulomb intra- and inter-dot Coulomb repulsion. In the limit of a large superconducting gap, we treat the coupling of the dots to the superconductor exactly. We employ a generalized master-equation method which easily yields currents, noise and cross-correlators. In particular, for finite inter- and intra-dot Coulomb interaction, we investigate how the transport properties are determined by the interplay between local an…
