We comprehensively study the variability of Miras in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by simultaneous analysing light curves in 14 bands in the range of 0.5$-$24 microns. We model over 20-years-long, high cadence $I$-band light curves collected by The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) and fit them to light curves collected in the remaining optical/near-infrared/mid-infrared bands to derive both the variability amplitude ratio and phase-lag as a function of wavelength. We show that the variability amplitude ratio declines with the increasing wavelength for both oxygen-rich (O-rich) and carbon-rich (C-rich) Miras, while the variability phase-lag increases slightly with the increasing wavelength. In a significant number of Miras, mostly the C-rich ones, the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) require a presence of a cool component (dust) in order to match the mid-IR data. Based on SED fits for a golden sample of 140 Miras, we calculated synthetic period-luminosity relations (PLRs) in 42 bands for the existing and future sky surveys that include OGLE, The VISTA Near-Infrared $YJK_\mathrm{s}$ Survey of the Magellanic Clouds System (VMC), Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), Gaia, Spitzer, The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (formerly WFIRST), and The Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We show that the synthetic PLR slope decreases with increasing wavelength for both the O-rich and C-rich Miras in the range of 0.1$-$40 microns. Finally, we show the location and motions of Miras on the color-magnitude (CMD) and color-color (CCD) diagrams.
We present Period-Luminosity and Period-Luminosity-Color relations at maximum-light for Mira variables in the Magellanic Clouds using time-series data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) and {\it Gaia} data release 2. The maximum-light relations exhibit a scatter typically up to $\sim 30\%$ smaller than their mean-light counterparts. The apparent magnitudes of Oxygen-rich Miras at maximum-light display significantly smaller cycle-to-cycle variations than at minimum-light. High-precision photometric data for Kepler Mira candidates also exhibit stable magnitude variation…
Mira variables are asymptotic giant branch pulsating stars with long pulsation periods and large amplitudes in optical bands. By applying the random forest algorithm to the I-band light curves for the Miras in the Magellanic Clouds, we have classified these Miras into regular Miras and non-regular Miras. Wherein non-regular Miras exhibit a long-term variation in addition to their primary pulsation periods. Our results confirm that the period-luminosity relation for maximum light has a smaller dispersion, but only occurs on the regular oxygen-rich (O-rich) Miras, which we recommend to be applie…
Mid-infrared bright objects in the direction of the Galactic Bulge were investigated using time series photometry from the MACHO data archive, which led to the discovery of a large number of long-period variables. Among these, a total of 192 bona-fide Mira variables was identified, which, to the best of our knowledge, are reported here for the first time. Together with the results from our previous investigations, we thereby bring the number of Mira variables found in the MACHO Galactic Bulge fields to a new total of 1286 stars. Light curves, folded light curves and summary data for all new Mi…
Empirical and theoretical studies have demonstrated that the periods of Mira variable stars are related to their ages. This, together with their brightness in the infrared, makes them powerful probes of the formation and evolution of highly-extincted or distant parts of the Local Group. Here we utilise the Gaia DR3 catalogue of long-period variable candidates to calibrate the period-age relation of the Mira variables. Dynamical models are fitted to the O-rich Mira variable population across the extended solar neighbourhood and then the resulting solar neighbourhood period-kinematic relations a…
We present 4 model series of the CODEX dynamical opacity-sampling models of Mira variables with solar abundances, designed to have parameters similar to $o$ Cet, R Leo and R Cas. We demonstrate that the CODEX models provide a clear physical basis for the molecular shell scenario used to explain interferometric observations of Mira variables. We show that these models generally provide a good match to photometry and interferometry at wavelengths between the near-infrared and the radio, and make the model outputs publicly available. These model also demonstrate that, in order to match visible an…
The goal of this paper is to characterise the light variation properties of Mira variables in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We have investigated a combined optical and near infrared multi-epoch dataset of Mira variables based on our monitoring data obtained over 15 years. Bolometric correction relations are formulated for various near-infrared colours. We find that the same bolometric correction equation holds for both the bolometricly brightest and faintest pulsation phases. Period-bolometric magnitude relations and period-colour relations were derived using time-averaged values. Phase lags bet…
We analyze sparsely-sampled near-infrared (JHKs) light curves of a sample of 1781 Mira variable candidates in M33, originally discovered using I-band time-series observations. We extend our single-band semi-parametric Gaussian process modeling of Mira light curves to a multi-band version and obtain improved period determinations. We use our previous results on near-infrared properties of candidate Miras in the LMC to classify the majority of the M33 sample into Oxygen- or Carbon-rich subsets. We derive Period-Luminosity relations for O-rich Miras and determine a distance modulus for M33 of 24.…
We investigate infrared properties of OGLE4 Mira variables in our Galaxy. For each object, we cross-identify the AllWISE, 2MASS, Gaia, and IRAS counterparts. We present various IR two-color diagrams (2CDs) and period-magnitude and period-color relations for the Mira variables. Generally, the Mira variables with longer periods are brighter in the IR fluxes and redder in the IR colors. In this work, we also revise and update the previous catalog of AGB stars in our Galaxy using the new sample of OGLE4 Mira variables. Now, we present a new catalog of 74,093 (64,609 O-rich and 9484 C-rich) AGB sta…
We describe the time-dependent properties of a new spectroscopically confirmed Mira variable, which was discovered in 2013 as MASTER-Net Optical Transient (OT) J212444.87+321738.3 towards the Cygnus constellation. We have performed long-term optical/near-infrared (NIR) photometric and spectroscopic observations to characterize the object. From the optical/NIR light curves, we estimate a variability period of 465 $\pm$ 30 days. The wavelength-dependent amplitudes of the observed light-curves range from $Δ$I$\sim$4 mag to $Δ$K$\sim$1.5 mag. The (J-K) color-index varies from 1.78 to 2.62 mag over…
Semi-regular variables (SRVs) are similar to Miras in brightness, and they also follow PLRs, though not necessarily the same as Miras. As potential standard candles they are more challenging than Miras due to their smaller variability amplitudes and less regular light curves, but they are substantially more numerous and especially promising to probe old stellar populations. We aim to characterize the variability of SRVs, with focus on their connection with Miras, in order to prepare the ground for investigating their potential as distance indicators. We examine SRVs and Miras in the Magellanic…
The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment identified over 1,800 carbon-rich Mira and semi-regular variables in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Multi-epoch infrared photometry reveals that the semi-regulars and Miras follow different sequences in color-color space when using colors sensitive to molecular absorption bands. The dustiest Miras have the strongest pulsation amplitudes and longest periods. Efforts to determine bolometric magnitudes reveal possible systematic errors with published bolometric corrections.
We have carried out a detailed analysis of the interesting and important very young planetary nebula (PN) Hen3-1357 (Stingray Nebula) based on a unique dataset of optical to far-IR spectra and photometric images. We calculated the abundances of nine elements using collisionally excited lines (CELs) and recombination lines (RLs). The RL C/O ratio indicates that this PN is O-rich, which is also supported by the detection of the broad 9/18 um bands from amorphous silicate grain. The observed elemental abundances can be explained by asymptotic giant branch (AGB) nucleosynthesis models for initiall…
We study the near-infrared properties of 690 Mira candidates in the central region of the Large Magellanic Cloud, based on time-series observations at JHKs. We use densely-sampled I-band observations from the OGLE project to generate template light curves in the near infrared and derive robust mean magnitudes at those wavelengths. We obtain near-infrared Period-Luminosity relations for Oxygen-rich Miras with a scatter as low as 0.12 mag at Ks. We study the Period-Luminosity-Color relations and the color excesses of Carbon-rich Miras, which show evidence for a substantially different reddening …
Near- to mid-infrared period-magnitude relations and also the period-bolometric luminosity relation of OGLE-III Mira-like variables in the LMC are derived. The relations have a kink, and the period at which the break occurs is quantitatively obtained. There are many Mira-like variables whose fluxes at the optical and the near-infrared wavebands are fainter than the ones predicted by the period-magnitude relations. The deviation is due to the circumstellar extinction, and the amount of the deviation is found to be strongly correlated with near-infrared colors. The empirical formulae relating th…
We present year-long, near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 observations used to search for Mira variables in NGC 1559, the host galaxy of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2005df. This is the first dedicated search for Miras, highly-evolved low-mass stars, in a SN Ia host and subsequently the first calibration of the SN Ia luminosity using Miras in a role historically played by Cepheids. We identify a sample of 115 O-rich Miras with P < 400 days based on their light curve properties. We find that the scatter in the Mira Period-Luminosity Relation (PLR) is comparable to Cepheid PLRs seen in SN…
With the help of model calculations we aim at reproducing the observational photometric findings for a large sample of well-characterised galactic C-type Mira variables losing mass at different rates. We used dynamic model atmospheres, describing the outer layers of C-rich Miras, which are severly affected by dynamic effects. Based on the resulting structures and under the assumptions of chemical equilibrium as well as LTE, we computed synthetic spectra and synthetic broad-band photometry (Johnson-Cousins-Glass). A set of five representative models with different stellar parameters describes a…
Variability is a signature property of cool young stars, particularly for those surrounded by disks. Traditional single-band time series display complex features associated with accretion, disk structure, and accompanying stellar activity, but these processes are challenging to model. To make progress in connecting observed time domain properties with the underlying physics of young stars and their disks, we have embarked on an unprecedented multiwavelength monitoring campaign: the Coordinated Synoptic Investigation of NGC 2264 ("CSI 2264"). Beginning in December 2011, CSI 2264 has acquired 30…
Stellar flares affect all atmospheric layers from the photosphere over chromosphere and transition region up into the corona. Simultaneous observations in different spectral bands allow to obtain a comprehensive picture of the environmental conditions and the physical processes going on during different phases of the flare. We investigate the properties of the coronal plasma during a giant flare on the active M dwarf CN Leo observed simultaneously with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT and XMM-Newton.From the X-ray data, we analyze the temporal evolution of the coronal temperature and emission …
Pulsation is believed to be the leading cause of dusty mass loss from Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. We present a temporal study of T Cep, a long-period Mira variable, using seven ISO SWS spectra, covering a 16-month period over a single pulsation cycle. The observed spectral dust features change over the pulsation cycle of this Mira. In general, the overall apparent changes in spectral features can be attributed to changes in the dust temperature, resulting from the intrinsic pulsation cycle of the central star. However, not all feature changes are so easily explained. Based on direct c…
