The barrier billiard is the simplest example of pseudo-integrable models with interesting and intricate classical and quantum properties. Using the Wiener-Hopf method it is demonstrated that quantum mechanics of a rectangular billiard with a barrier in the centre can be reduced to the investigation of a certain unitary matrix. Under heuristic assumptions this matrix is substituted by a special low-complexity random unitary matrix of independent interest. The main results of the paper are (i) spectral statistics of such billiards is insensitive to the barrier height and (ii) it is well described by the semi-Poisson distributions.
The paper is devoted to the derivation of random unitary matrices whose spectral statistics is the same as statistics of quantum eigenvalues of certain deterministic two-dimensional barrier billiards. These random matrices are extracted from the exact billiard quantisation condition by applying a random phase approximation for high-excited states. An important ingredient of the method is the calculation of $S$-matrix for the scattering in the slab with a half-plane inside by the Wiener-Hopf method. It appears that these random matrices have the form similar to the one obtained by the author in…
The properties of energy levels in a family of classically pseudointegrable systems, the barrier billiards, are investigated. An extensive numerical study of nearest-neighbor spacing distributions, next-to-nearest spacing distributions, number variances, spectral form factors, and the level dynamics is carried out. For a special member of the billiard family, the form factor is calculated analytically for small arguments in the diagonal approximation. All results together are consistent with the so-called semi-Poisson statistics.
Using heuristic arguments based on the trace formulas, we analytically calculate the semiclassical two-point correlation form factor for a family of rectangular billiards with a barrier of height irrational with respect to the side of the billiard and located at any rational position p/q from the side. To do this, we first obtain the asymptotic density of lengths for each family of periodic orbits by a Siegel-Veech formula. The result K(0)=1/2+1/q obtained for these pseudo-integrable, non-Veech billiards is different but not far from the value of 1/2 expected for semi-Poisson statistics and fr…
The pseudo-integrable barrier billiard invented by Hannay and McCraw [J. Phys. A 23, 887 (1990)] -- rectangular billiard with line-segment barrier placed on a symmetry axis -- is generalized. It is proven that the flow on invariant surfaces of genus two exhibits a singular continuous spectral component.
With a perturbation body technique intensity distributions of the electric field strength in a flat microwave billiard with a barrier inside up to mode numbers as large as about 700 were measured. A method for the reconstruction of the amplitudes and phases of the electric field strength from those intensity distributions has been developed. Recently predicted superscars have been identified experimentally and - using the well known analogy between the electric field strength and the quantum mechanical wave function in a two-dimensional microwave billiard - their properties determined.
Triggered by a controversy surrounding a universal behaviour of the power spectrum in quantum systems exhibiting regular classical dynamics, we focus on a model of random diagonal matrices (RDM), often associated with the Poisson spectral universality class, and examine how the power spectrum and the form factor get affected by two-sided truncations of RDM spectra. Having developed a nonperturbative description of both statistics, we perform their detailed asymptotic analysis to demonstrate explicitly how a traditional assumption (lying at the heart of the controversy) -- that the power spectr…
Open chaotic systems are expected to possess universal transport statistics and recently there have been many advances in understanding and obtaining expressions for their transport moments. However when tunnel barriers are added, which represents the situation in more general experimental physical systems much less is known about the behaviour of the moments. By incorporating tunnel barriers in the recursive semiclassical diagrammatic approach we obtain the moment generating function of the transmission eigenvalues at leading and subleading order. For reflection quantities quantum mechanical …
The value of spectral form factor at the origin, called level compressibility, is an important characteristic of random spectra. The paper is devoted to analytical calculations of this quantity for different random unitary matrices describing models with intermediate spectral statistics. The computations are based on the approach developed by G. Tanner in [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 34, 8485 (2001)] for chaotic systems. The main ingredient of the method is the determination of eigenvalues of a transition matrix whose matrix elements equal squared moduli of matrix elements of the initial unitary ma…
We show that wave functions in planar rational polygonal billiards (all angles rationally related to Pi) can be expanded in a basis of quasi-stationary and spatially regular states. Unlike the energy eigenstates, these states are directly related to the classical invariant surfaces in the semiclassical limit. This is illustrated for the barrier billiard. We expect that these states are also present in integrable billiards with point scatterers or magnetic flux lines.
We calculate the joint distribution $P(S,Q)$ of the scattering matrix $S$ and time-delay matrix $Q=-i\hbar S^\dagger dS/dE$ of a chaotic quantum dot coupled by point contacts to metal electrodes. While $S$ and $Q$ are statistically independent for ballistic coupling, they become correlated for tunnel coupling. We relate the ensemble averages of $Q$ and $S$ and thereby obtain the average density of states at the Fermi level. We apply this to a calculation of the effect of a tunnel barrier on the Majorana resonance in a topological superconductor. We find that the presence of a Majorana bound st…
In a unifying way, the doorway mechanism explains spectral properties in a rich variety of open mesoscopic quantum systems, ranging from atoms to nuclei. A distinct state and a background of other states couple to each other which sensitively affects the strength function. The recently measured superscars in the barrier billiard provide an ideal model for an in--depth investigation of this mechanism. We introduce two new statistical observables, the full distribution of the maximum coupling coefficient to the doorway and directed spatial correlators. Using Random Matrix Theory and random plane…
The zeroes of the Husimi function provide a minimal description of individual quantum eigenstates and their distribution is of considerable interest. We provide here a numerical study for pseudo- integrable billiards which suggests that the zeroes tend to diffuse over phase space in a manner reminiscent of chaotic systems but nevertheless contain a subtle signature of pseudo-integrability. We also find that the zeroes depend sensitively on the position and momentum uncertainties with the classical correspondence best when the position and momentum uncertainties are equal. Finally, short range …

The spectral fluctuations of complex quantum systems, in appropriate limit, are known to be consistent with that obtained from random matrices. However, this relation between the spectral fluctuations of physical systems and random matrices is valid only if the spectra are desymmetrized. This implies that the fluctuation properties of the spectra are affected by the discrete symmetries of the system. In this work, it is shown that in the chaotic limit the fluctuation characteristics and symmetry structure for any arbitrary sequence of measured or computed levels can be inferred from its higher…
Closed expressions are derived for the resonance widths and Coulomb blockade conductance peak heights in quantum dots for the crossover regime between conserved and broken time-reversal symmetry. The results hold for leads with any number of possibly correlated and inequivalent channels. Our analytic predictions are in good agreement with simulations of both random matrices and a chaotic billiard with a magnetic flux line.
Scattering is an important phenomenon which is observed in systems ranging from the micro- to macroscale. In the context of nuclear reaction theory the Heidelberg approach was proposed and later demonstrated to be applicable to many chaotic scattering systems. To model the universal properties, stochasticity is introduced to the scattering matrix on the level of the Hamiltonian by using random matrices. A long-standing problem was the computation of the distribution of the off-diagonal scattering-matrix elements. We report here an exact solution to this problem and present analytical results f…
The distribution of the ratios of nearest neighbor level spacings has become a popular indicator of spectral fluctuations in complex quantum systems like interacting many-body localized and thermalization phases, quantum chaotic systems, and also in atomic and nuclear physics. In contrast to the level spacing distribution, which requires the cumbersome and at times ambiguous unfolding procedure, the ratios of spacings do not require unfolding and are easier to compute. In this work, for the class of Wigner-Dyson random matrices with nearest neighbor spacing ratios $r$ distributed as $P_β(r)$ f…
