We present the serendipitous discovery of a galaxy group in the XMM-LSS field with MIGHTEE Early Science observations. Twenty galaxies are detected in HI in this $z\sim0.044$ group, with a $3σ$ column density sensitivity of $N_\mathrm{HI} = 1.6\times10^{20}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. This group has not been previously identified, despite residing in a well-studied extragalactic legacy field. We present spatially-resolved HI total intensity and velocity maps for each of the objects, which reveal environmental influence through disturbed morphologies. The group has a dynamical mass of $\log_{10}(M_\mathrm{dyn}/\mathrm{M}_\odot) = 12.32$, and is unusually gas-rich, with an HI-to-stellar mass ratio of $\log_{10}(f_\mathrm{HI}^\mathrm{*}) = -0.2$, which is 0.7 dex greater than expected. The group's high HI content, spatial, velocity, and identified galaxy type distributions strongly suggest that it is in the early stages of its assembly. The discovery of this galaxy group is an example of the importance of mapping spatially-resolved HI in a wide range of environments, including galaxy groups. This scientific goal has been dramatically enhanced by the high sensitivity, large field-of-view, and wide instantaneous bandwidth of the MeerKAT telescope.
In this work we present a novel compute framework for reconstructing Faraday depth signals from noisy and incomplete spectro-polarimetric radio datasets. This framework is based on a compressed-sensing approach that addresses a number of outstanding issues in Faraday depth reconstruction in a systematic and scaleable manner. We apply this framework to early-release data from the MeerKAT MIGHTEE polarisation survey.
We present the HI emission project within the MIGHTEE survey, currently being carried out with the newly commissioned MeerKAT radio telescope. This is one of the first deep, blind, medium-wide interferometric surveys for neutral hydrogen (HI) ever undertaken, extending our knowledge of HI emission to z=0.6. The science goals of this medium-deep, medium-wide survey are extensive, including the evolution of the neutral gas content of galaxies over the past 5 billion years. Simulations predict nearly 3000 galaxies over 0<z<0.4 will be detected directly in HI, with statistical detections extending…
Intensity mapping (IM) with neutral hydrogen is a promising avenue to probe the large scale structure of the Universe. In this paper, we demonstrate that using the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope as a connected interferometer, it is possible to make a statistical detection of HI in the post-reionization Universe. With the MIGHTEE (MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration) survey project observing in the L-band ($856 < ν< 1712$ MHz, $z < 0.66$), we can achieve the required sensitivity to measure the HI IM power spectrum on quasi-linear scales, which will provide an important c…
We report the discovery of two new giant radio galaxies (GRGs) using the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey. Both GRGs were found within a 1 deg^2 region inside the COSMOS field. They have redshifts of z=0.1656 and z=0.3363 and physical sizes of 2.4Mpc and 2.0Mpc, respectively. Only the cores of these GRGs were clearly visible in previous high resolution VLA observations, since the diffuse emission of the lobes was resolved out. However, the excellent sensitivity and uv coverage of the new MeerKAT telescope allowed this diffuse emission to be detected. …
MIGHTEE is a galaxy evolution survey using simultaneous radio continuum, spectro-polarimetry, and spectral line observations from the South African MeerKAT telescope. When complete, the survey will image $\sim$20 deg$^{2}$ over the COSMOS, E-CDFS, ELAIS-S1, and XMM-LSS extragalactic deep fields with a central frequency of 1284 MHz. These were selected based on the extensive multiwavelength datasets from numerous existing and forthcoming observational campaigns. Here we describe and validate the data processing strategy for the total intensity continuum aspect of MIGHTEE, using a single deep po…
We study the radio spectral properties of 2,094 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) by combining our early science data from the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey with VLA, GMRT radio data, and rich ancillary data in the COSMOS field. These SFGs are selected at VLA 3GHz, and their flux densities from MeerKAT 1.3GHz and GMRT 325MHz imaging data are extracted using the "super-deblending" technique. The median radio spectral index is $α_{\rm 1.3GHz}^{\rm 3GHz}=-0.80\pm0.01$ without significant variation across the rest-frame frequencies ~1.3-10GHz, indicating ra…

We present the observed HI size-mass relation of $204$ galaxies from the MIGHTEE Survey Early Science data. The high sensitivity of MeerKAT allows us to detect galaxies spanning more than 4 orders of magnitude in HI mass, ranging from dwarf galaxies to massive spirals, and including all morphological types. This is the first time the relation has been explored on a blind homogeneous data set which extends over a previously unexplored redshift range of $0 < z < 0.084$, i.e. a period of around one billion years in cosmic time. The sample follows the same tight logarithmic relation derived from p…
The transformation and evolution of a galaxy is strongly influenced by interactions with its environment. Neutral hydrogen (\HI) is an excellent way to trace these interactions. Here, we present \HI\ observations of the spiral galaxy NGC~895, which was previously thought to be isolated. High-sensitivity \HI\ observations from the MeerKAT large survey project MIGHTEE reveal possible interaction features, such as extended spiral arms, and the two newly discovered \HI\ companions, that drive us to change the narrative that it is an isolated galaxy. We combine these observations with deep optical …

We present the discovery of a single radio relic located at the edge of the galaxy cluster A2384, using the MeerKAT radio telescope. A2384 is a nearby ($z$ = 0.092), low mass, complex bimodal, merging galaxy cluster that displays a dense X-ray filament ($\sim$ 700 kpc in length) between A2384(N) (Northern cluster) and A2384(S) (Southern cluster). The origin of the radio relic is puzzling. By using the MeerKAT observation of A2384, we estimate that the physical size of the radio relic is 824 $\times$ 264 kpc$^{2}$ and that it is a steep spectrum source. The radio power of the relic is $P_{1.4\m…
We study the nature of the faint radio source population detected in the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) Early Science data in the COSMOS field, focusing on the properties of the radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). Using the extensive multi-wavelength data available in the field, we are able to classify 88 per cent of the 5223 radio sources in the field with host galaxy identifications as AGN (35 per cent) or star-forming galaxies (54 per cent). We select a sample of radio-loud AGN with redshifts out to $z \sim 6$ and radio luminosities $10^{20} < \tex…

We present the first measurements of HI galaxy scaling relations from a blind survey at $z>0.15$. We perform spectral stacking of 9023 spectra of star-forming galaxies undetected in HI at $0.23<z<0.49$, extracted from MIGHTEE-HI Early Science datacubes, acquired with the MeerKAT radio telescope. We stack galaxies in bins of galaxy properties ($M_*$, SFR, and sSFR, with ${\rm sSFR}\equiv M_*/{\rm SFR}$), obtaining $\gtrsim 5σ$ detections in most cases, the strongest HI-stacking detections to date in this redshift range. With these detections, we are able to measure scaling relations in the prob…
We report the discovery of large amounts of previously undetected cold neutral atomic hydrogen (\HI) around the core triplet galaxies in the nearby NGC~7232 galaxy group with MeerKAT. With a physical resolution of $\sim$1 kpc, we detect a complex web of low surface brightness \HI\ emission down to a 4$σ$ column density level of $\sim$1 $\times$ 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ (over 44 \kms ). The newly discovered H\,{\sc i} streams extend over $\sim$20 arcmin corresponding to 140~kpc in projection. This is $\sim$3 times the \HI\ extent of the galaxy triplet (52 kpc). The \HI\ debris has an \HI\ mass of $\…

In the local Universe, OH megamasers (OHMs) are detected almost exclusively in infrared-luminous galaxies, with a prevalence that increases with IR luminosity, suggesting that they trace gas-rich galaxy mergers. Given the proximity of the rest frequencies of OH and the hyperfine transition of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), radio surveys to probe the cosmic evolution of HI in galaxies also offer exciting prospects for exploiting OHMs to probe the cosmic history of gas-rich mergers. Using observations for the Looking At the Distant Universe with the MeerKAT Array (LADUMA) deep HI survey, we repor…
Our understanding of how AGN feedback operates in galaxy clusters has improved in recent years owing to large efforts in multi-wavelength observations and hydrodynamical simulations. However, it is much less clear how feedback operates in galaxy groups, which have shallower gravitational potentials. In this work, using very deep VLA and new MeerKAT observations from the MIGHTEE survey, we compiled a sample of 247 X-ray selected galaxy groups detected in the COSMOS field. We have studied the relation between the X-ray emission of the intra-group medium and the 1.4 GHz radio emission of the cent…
We present the discovery of neutral gas detected in both damped Ly$α$ absorption (DLA) and HI 21-cm emission outside of the stellar body of a galaxy, the first such detection in the literature. A joint analysis between the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey and the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey reveals an HI bridge connecting two interacting dwarf galaxies (log$(M_{\text{star}}/\text{M}_{\odot}) = 8.5 \pm 0.2$) that host a $z = 0.026$ DLA with log[$N$(HI)/cm$^{-2}$]$ = 20.60 \pm 0.05$ toward the QSO J2339-5523 ($z_{\text{QSO}} = 1.35$). At impact parameters of $d = 6$ and $33$ kpc, the dwarf ga…
We report the detection of stimulated hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) emission from ionized gas in a $z=0.89$ galaxy using 580--1670 MHz observations from the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS). The RRL emission originates in a galaxy that intercepts and strongly lenses the radio blazar PKS 1830-211 ($z=2.5$). This is the second detection of RRLs outside of the local universe and the first clearly associated with hydrogen. We detect effective H144$α$ (and H163$α$) transitions at observed frequencies of 1156 (798) MHz by stacking 17 (27) RRLs with 21$σ$ (14$σ$) significance. The RRL …
We present the first detection of OH absorption in diffuse gas at $z>0$, along with another eight stringent limits on OH column densities for cold atomic gas in galaxies at $0<z<0.4$. The absorbing gas detected towards Q0248+430 ($z_q$=1.313) originates from a tidal tail emanating from a highly star forming galaxy G0248+430 ($z_g$=0.0519) at an impact parameter of 15 kpc. The measured column density is $N$(OH) = (6.3$\pm$0.8)$\times$10$^{13}$($\frac{T_{\rm ex}}{3.5}$)($\frac{1.0}{f_c^{\rm OH}}$) cm$^{-2}$, where $f_c^{\rm OH}$ and $T_{\rm ex}$ are the covering factor and the excitation tempera…
AGN feedback during galaxy merger has been the most favoured model to explain black hole-galaxy co-evolution. However, how the AGN-driven jet/wind/radiation is coupled with the gas of the merging galaxies, which leads to positive feedback, momentarily enhanced star formation, and subsequently negative feedback, a decline in star formation, is poorly understood. Only a few cases are known where the jet and companion galaxy interaction leads to minor off-axis distortions in the jets and enhanced star formation in the gas-rich minor companions. Here, we briefly report one extraordinary case, RAD1…
