This paper presents our solution to the AVA-Kinetics Crossover Challenge of ActivityNet workshop at CVPR 2021. Our solution utilizes multiple types of relation modeling methods for spatio-temporal action detection and adopts a training strategy to integrate multiple relation modeling in end-to-end training over the two large-scale video datasets. Learning with memory bank and finetuning for long-tailed distribution are also investigated to further improve the performance. In this paper, we detail the implementations of our solution and provide experiments results and corresponding discussions. We finally achieve 40.67 mAP on the test set of AVA-Kinetics.
This notebook paper presents an overview and comparative analysis of our systems designed for the following three tasks in ActivityNet Challenge 2019: trimmed action recognition, dense-captioning events in videos, and spatio-temporal action localization.
We propose an effective approach for spatio-temporal action localization in realistic videos. The approach first detects proposals at the frame-level and scores them with a combination of static and motion CNN features. It then tracks high-scoring proposals throughout the video using a tracking-by-detection approach. Our tracker relies simultaneously on instance-level and class-level detectors. The tracks are scored using a spatio-temporal motion histogram, a descriptor at the track level, in combination with the CNN features. Finally, we perform temporal localization of the action using a sli…

This paper addresses spatio-temporal localization of human actions in video. In order to localize actions in time, we propose a recurrent localization network (RecLNet) designed to model the temporal structure of actions on the level of person tracks. Our model is trained to simultaneously recognize and localize action classes in time and is based on two layer gated recurrent units (GRU) applied separately to two streams, i.e. appearance and optical flow streams. When used together with state-of-the-art person detection and tracking, our model is shown to improve substantially spatio-temporal …
The goal of this work is spatio-temporal action localization in videos, using only the supervision from video-level class labels. The state-of-the-art casts this weakly-supervised action localization regime as a Multiple Instance Learning problem, where instances are a priori computed spatio-temporal proposals. Rather than disconnecting the spatio-temporal learning from the training, we propose Spatio-Temporal Instance Learning, which enables action localization directly from box proposals in video frames. We outline the assumptions of our model and propose a max-margin objective and optimizat…
Most current pipelines for spatio-temporal action localization connect frame-wise or clip-wise detection results to generate action proposals, where only local information is exploited and the efficiency is hindered by dense per-frame localization. In this paper, we propose Coarse-to-Fine Action Detector (CFAD),an original end-to-end trainable framework for efficient spatio-temporal action localization. The CFAD introduces a new paradigm that first estimates coarse spatio-temporal action tubes from video streams, and then refines the tubes' location based on key timestamps. This concept is imp…
Spatiotemporal action localization requires the incorporation of two sources of information into the designed architecture: (1) temporal information from the previous frames and (2) spatial information from the key frame. Current state-of-the-art approaches usually extract these information with separate networks and use an extra mechanism for fusion to get detections. In this work, we present YOWO, a unified CNN architecture for real-time spatiotemporal action localization in video streams. YOWO is a single-stage architecture with two branches to extract temporal and spatial information concu…
Spatio-temporal action detection is an important and challenging problem in video understanding. However, the application of the existing large-scale spatio-temporal action datasets in specific fields is limited, and there is currently no public tool for making spatio-temporal action datasets, it takes a lot of time and effort for researchers to customize the spatio-temporal action datasets, so we propose a multi-Person video dataset Annotation Method of spatio-temporally actions.First, we use ffmpeg to crop the videos and frame the videos; then use yolov5 to detect human in the video frame, a…

This paper addresses the problem of spatiotemporal localization of actions in videos. Compared to leading approaches, which all learn to localize based on carefully annotated boxes on training video frames, we adhere to a weakly-supervised solution that only requires a video class label. We introduce an actor-supervised architecture that exploits the inherent compositionality of actions in terms of actor transformations, to localize actions. We make two contributions. First, we propose actor proposals derived from a detector for human and non-human actors intended for images, which is linked o…
This paper strives for spatio-temporal localization of human actions in videos. In the literature, the consensus is to achieve localization by training on bounding box annotations provided for each frame of each training video. As annotating boxes in video is expensive, cumbersome and error-prone, we propose to bypass box-supervision. Instead, we introduce action localization based on point-supervision. We start from unsupervised spatio-temporal proposals, which provide a set of candidate regions in videos. While normally used exclusively for inference, we show spatio-temporal proposals can al…

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have been widely used to model the high-order dynamic dependencies for skeleton-based action recognition. Most existing approaches do not explicitly embed the high-order spatio-temporal importance to joints' spatial connection topology and intensity, and they do not have direct objectives on their attention module to jointly learn when and where to focus on in the action sequence. To address these problems, we propose the To-a-T Spatio-Temporal Focus (STF), a skeleton-based action recognition framework that utilizes the spatio-temporal gradient to focus on r…
Spatio-temporal representational learning has been widely adopted in various fields such as action recognition, video object segmentation, and action anticipation. Previous spatio-temporal representational learning approaches primarily employ ConvNets or sequential models,e.g., LSTM, to learn the intra-frame and inter-frame features. Recently, Transformer models have successfully dominated the study of natural language processing (NLP), image classification, etc. However, the pure-Transformer based spatio-temporal learning can be prohibitively costly on memory and computation to extract fine-g…

Current state-of-the-art approaches for spatio-temporal action localization rely on detections at the frame level that are then linked or tracked across time. In this paper, we leverage the temporal continuity of videos instead of operating at the frame level. We propose the ACtion Tubelet detector (ACT-detector) that takes as input a sequence of frames and outputs tubelets, i.e., sequences of bounding boxes with associated scores. The same way state-of-the-art object detectors rely on anchor boxes, our ACT-detector is based on anchor cuboids. We build upon the SSD framework. Convolutional fea…
This technical report present an overview of our system proposed for the spatio-temporal action localization(SAL) task in ActivityNet Challenge 2019. Unlike previous two-streams-based works, we focus on exploring the end-to-end trainable architecture using only RGB sequential images. To this end, we employ a previously proposed simple yet effective two-branches network called SlowFast Networks which is capable of capturing both short- and long-term spatiotemporal features. Moreover, to handle the severe class imbalance and overfitting problems, we propose a correlation-preserving data augmenta…
Spatio-temporal graph signal analysis has a significant impact on a wide range of applications, including hand/body pose action recognition. To achieve effective analysis, spatio-temporal graph convolutional networks (ST-GCN) leverage the powerful learning ability to achieve great empirical successes; however, those methods need a huge amount of high-quality training data and lack theoretical interpretation. To address this issue, the spatio-temporal graph scattering transform (ST-GST) was proposed to put forth a theoretically interpretable framework; however, the empirical performance of this…

The need for efficiently finding the video content a user wants is increasing because of the erupting of user-generated videos on the Web. Existing keyword-based or content-based video retrieval methods usually determine what occurs in a video but not when and where. In this paper, we make an answer to the question of when and where by formulating a new task, namely spatio-temporal video re-localization. Specifically, given a query video and a reference video, spatio-temporal video re-localization aims to localize tubelets in the reference video such that the tubelets semantically correspond t…
In this paper, we propose a novel abnormal event detection method with spatio-temporal adversarial networks (STAN). We devise a spatio-temporal generator which synthesizes an inter-frame by considering spatio-temporal characteristics with bidirectional ConvLSTM. A proposed spatio-temporal discriminator determines whether an input sequence is real-normal or not with 3D convolutional layers. These two networks are trained in an adversarial way to effectively encode spatio-temporal features of normal patterns. After the learning, the generator and the discriminator can be independently used as de…
Existing approaches for spatio-temporal action detection in videos are limited by the spatial extent and temporal duration of the actions. In this paper, we present a modular system for spatio-temporal action detection in untrimmed security videos. We propose a two stage approach. The first stage generates dense spatio-temporal proposals using hierarchical clustering and temporal jittering techniques on frame-wise object detections. The second stage is a Temporal Refinement I3D (TRI-3D) network that performs action classification and temporal refinement on the generated proposals. The object d…

Vehicle re-identification is an important problem and has many applications in video surveillance and intelligent transportation. It gains increasing attention because of the recent advances of person re-identification techniques. However, unlike person re-identification, the visual differences between pairs of vehicle images are usually subtle and even challenging for humans to distinguish. Incorporating additional spatio-temporal information is vital for solving the challenging re-identification task. Existing vehicle re-identification methods ignored or used over-simplified models for the s…

The current paper presents a novel recurrent neural network model, the predictive multiple spatio-temporal scales RNN (P-MSTRNN), which can generate as well as recognize dynamic visual patterns in the predictive coding framework. The model is characterized by multiple spatio-temporal scales imposed on neural unit dynamics through which an adequate spatio-temporal hierarchy develops via learning from exemplars. The model was evaluated by conducting an experiment of learning a set of whole body human movement patterns which was generated by following a hierarchically defined movement syntax. The…
Gait recognition is an important recognition technology, because gait is not easy to camouflage and does not need cooperation to recognize subjects. However, many existing methods are inadequate in preserving both temporal information and fine-grained information, thus reducing its discrimination. This problem is more serious when the subjects with similar walking postures are identified. In this paper, we try to enhance the discrimination of spatio-temporal gait features from two aspects: effective extraction of spatio-temporal gait features and reasonable refinement of extracted features. Th…

Spatio-temporal action localization is an important problem in computer vision that involves detecting where and when activities occur, and therefore requires modeling of both spatial and temporal features. This problem is typically formulated in the context of supervised learning, where the learned classifiers operate on the premise that both training and test data are sampled from the same underlying distribution. However, this assumption does not hold when there is a significant domain shift, leading to poor generalization performance on the test data. To address this, we focus on the hard …

In this paper, we consider a novel task, Spatio-Temporal Video Grounding for Multi-Form Sentences (STVG). Given an untrimmed video and a declarative/interrogative sentence depicting an object, STVG aims to localize the spatio-temporal tube of the queried object. STVG has two challenging settings: (1) We need to localize spatio-temporal object tubes from untrimmed videos, where the object may only exist in a very small segment of the video; (2) We deal with multi-form sentences, including the declarative sentences with explicit objects and interrogative sentences with unknown objects. Existing …

High resolution satellite image sequences are multidimensional signals composed of spatio-temporal patterns associated to numerous and various phenomena. Bayesian methods have been previously proposed in (Heas and Datcu, 2005) to code the information contained in satellite image sequences in a graph representation using Bayesian methods. Based on such a representation, this paper further presents a supervised learning methodology of semantics associated to spatio-temporal patterns occurring in satellite image sequences. It enables the recognition and the probabilistic retrieval of similar even…
For deepfake detection, video-level detectors have not been explored as extensively as image-level detectors, which do not exploit temporal data. In this paper, we empirically show that existing approaches on image and sequence classifiers generalize poorly to new manipulation techniques. To this end, we propose spatio-temporal features, modeled by 3D CNNs, to extend the generalization capabilities to detect new sorts of deepfake videos. We show that spatial features learn distinct deepfake-method-specific attributes, while spatio-temporal features capture shared attributes between deepfake me…
In this work, we address the problem of spatio-temporal action detection in temporally untrimmed videos. It is an important and challenging task as finding accurate human actions in both temporal and spatial space is important for analyzing large-scale video data. To tackle this problem, we propose a cascade proposal and location anticipation (CPLA) model for frame-level action detection. There are several salient points of our model: (1) a cascade region proposal network (casRPN) is adopted for action proposal generation and shows better localization accuracy compared with single region propo…
We propose a new way of incorporating temporal information present in videos into Spatial Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) trained on images, that avoids training Spatio-Temporal ConvNets from scratch. We describe several initializations of weights in 3D Convolutional Layers of Spatio-Temporal ConvNet using 2D Convolutional Weights learned from ImageNet. We show that it is important to initialize 3D Convolutional Weights judiciously in order to learn temporal representations of videos. We evaluate our methods on the UCF-101 dataset and demonstrate improvement over Spatial ConvNets.
Indoor localization systems often fuse inertial odometry with map information via hand-defined methods to reduce odometry drift, but such methods are sensitive to noise and struggle to generalize across odometry sources. To address the robustness problem in map utilization, we propose a data-driven prior on possible user locations in a map by combining learned spatial map embeddings and temporal odometry embeddings. Our prior learns to encode which map regions are feasible locations for a user more accurately than previous hand-defined methods. This prior leads to a 49% improvement in inertial…

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with behavioral and communication problems. Often, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is used to detect and characterize brain changes related to the disorder. Recently, machine learning methods have been employed to reveal new patterns by trying to classify ASD from spatio-temporal fMRI images. Typically, these methods have either focused on temporal or spatial information processing. Instead, we propose a 4D spatio-temporal deep learning approach for ASD classification where we jointly learn from spatial and temporal data. We employ 4D c…

We perform spatio-temporal analysis of public sentiment using geotagged photo collections. We develop a deep learning-based classifier that predicts the emotion conveyed by an image. This allows us to associate sentiment with place. We perform spatial hotspot detection and show that different emotions have distinct spatial distributions that match expectations. We also perform temporal analysis using the capture time of the photos. Our spatio-temporal hotspot detection correctly identifies emerging concentrations of specific emotions and year-by-year analyses of select locations show there are…

Large volumes of spatio-temporal data are increasingly collected and studied in diverse domains including, climate science, social sciences, neuroscience, epidemiology, transportation, mobile health, and Earth sciences. Spatio-temporal data differs from relational data for which computational approaches are developed in the data mining community for multiple decades, in that both spatial and temporal attributes are available in addition to the actual measurements/attributes. The presence of these attributes introduces additional challenges that needs to be dealt with. Approaches for mining spa…

Deep Recurrent Neural Network architectures, though remarkably capable at modeling sequences, lack an intuitive high-level spatio-temporal structure. That is while many problems in computer vision inherently have an underlying high-level structure and can benefit from it. Spatio-temporal graphs are a popular tool for imposing such high-level intuitions in the formulation of real world problems. In this paper, we propose an approach for combining the power of high-level spatio-temporal graphs and sequence learning success of Recurrent Neural Networks~(RNNs).
