At present, the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image classification method based on convolution neural network (CNN) has faced some problems such as poor noise resistance and generalization ability. Spiking neural network (SNN) is one of the core components of brain-like intelligence and has good application prospects. This article constructs a complete SAR image classifier based on unsupervised and supervised learning of SNN by using spike sequences with complex spatio-temporal information. We firstly expound the spiking neuron model, the receptive field of SNN, and the construction of spike sequence. Then we put forward an unsupervised learning algorithm based on STDP and a supervised learning algorithm based on gradient descent. The average classification accuracy of single layer and bilayer unsupervised learning SNN in three categories images on MSTAR dataset is 80.8\% and 85.1\%, respectively. Furthermore, the convergent output spike sequences of unsupervised learning can be used as teaching signals. Based on the TensorFlow framework, a single layer supervised learning SNN is built from the bottom, and the classification accuracy reaches 90.05\%. By comparing noise resistance and model parameters between SNNs and CNNs, the effectiveness and outstanding advantages of SNN are verified. Code to reproduce our experiments is available at \url{https://github.com/Jiankun-chen/Supervised-SNN-with-GD}.
A fundamental feature of learning in animals is the "ability to forget" that allows an organism to perceive, model and make decisions from disparate streams of information and adapt to changing environments. Against this backdrop, we present a novel unsupervised learning mechanism ASP (Adaptive Synaptic Plasticity) for improved recognition with Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) for real time on-line learning in a dynamic environment. We incorporate an adaptive weight decay mechanism with the traditional Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity (STDP) learning to model adaptivity in SNNs. The leak rate o…
Brain-inspired learning models attempt to mimic the cortical architecture and computations performed in the neurons and synapses constituting the human brain to achieve its efficiency in cognitive tasks. In this work, we present convolutional spike timing dependent plasticity based feature learning with biologically plausible leaky-integrate-and-fire neurons in Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). We use shared weight kernels that are trained to encode representative features underlying the input patterns thereby improving the sparsity as well as the robustness of the learning model. We demonstrate…

The combination of spiking neural networks and event-based vision sensors holds the potential of highly efficient and high-bandwidth optical flow estimation. This paper presents the first hierarchical spiking architecture in which motion (direction and speed) selectivity emerges in an unsupervised fashion from the raw stimuli generated with an event-based camera. A novel adaptive neuron model and stable spike-timing-dependent plasticity formulation are at the core of this neural network governing its spike-based processing and learning, respectively. After convergence, the neural architecture …
This paper proposes a Fully Spiking Hybrid Neural Network (FSHNN) for energy-efficient and robust object detection in resource-constrained platforms. The network architecture is based on Convolutional SNN using leaky-integrate-fire neuron models. The model combines unsupervised Spike Time-Dependent Plasticity (STDP) learning with back-propagation (STBP) learning methods and also uses Monte Carlo Dropout to get an estimate of the uncertainty error. FSHNN provides better accuracy compared to DNN based object detectors while being 150X energy-efficient. It also outperforms these object detectors,…

Spiking neural network (SNN) has attracted much attention due to their powerful spatio-temporal information representation ability. Capsule Neural Network (CapsNet) does well in assembling and coupling features at different levels. Here, we propose Spiking CapsNet by introducing the capsules into the modelling of spiking neural networks. In addition, we propose a more biologically plausible Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity routing mechanism. By fully considering the spatio-temporal relationship between the low-level spiking capsules and the high-level spiking capsules, the coupling ability be…

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) equipped with latency coding and spike-timing dependent plasticity rules offer an alternative to solve the data and energy bottlenecks of standard computer vision approaches: they can learn visual features without supervision and can be implemented by ultra-low power hardware architectures. However, their performance in image classification has never been evaluated on recent image datasets. In this paper, we compare SNNs to auto-encoders on three visual recognition datasets, and extend the use of SNNs to color images. The analysis of the results helps us identify…
Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) may offer an energy-efficient alternative for implementing deep learning applications. In recent years, there have been several proposals focused on supervised (conversion, spike-based gradient descent) and unsupervised (spike timing dependent plasticity) training methods to improve the accuracy of SNNs on large-scale tasks. However, each of these methods suffer from scalability, latency and accuracy limitations. In this paper, we propose novel algorithmic techniques of modifying the SNN configuration with backward residual connections, stochastic softmax and hyb…

Synaptic plasticity seems to be a capital aspect of the dynamics of neural networks. It is about the physiological modifications of the synapse, which have like consequence a variation of the value of the synaptic weight. The information encoding is based on the precise timing of single spike events that is based on the relative timing of the pre- and post-synaptic spikes, local synapse competitions within a single neuron and global competition via lateral connections. In order to classify temporal sequences, we present in this paper how to use a local hebbian learning, spike-timing dependent …
Biological image processing is performed by complex neural networks composed of thousands of neurons interconnected via thousands of synapses, some of which are excitatory and others inhibitory. Spiking neural models are distinguished from classical neurons by being biological plausible and exhibiting the same dynamics as those observed in biological neurons. This paper proposes a Natural Convolutional Neural Network (NatCSNN) which is a 3-layer bio-inspired Convolutional Spiking Neural Network (CSNN), for classifying objects extracted from natural images. A two-stage training algorithm is pro…

The primate visual system has inspired the development of deep artificial neural networks, which have revolutionized the computer vision domain. Yet these networks are much less energy-efficient than their biological counterparts, and they are typically trained with backpropagation, which is extremely data-hungry. To address these limitations, we used a deep convolutional spiking neural network (DCSNN) and a latency-coding scheme. We trained it using a combination of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) for the lower layers and reward-modulated STDP (R-STDP) for the higher ones. In short, …
This paper proposes an unsupervised address event representation (AER) object recognition approach. The proposed approach consists of a novel multiscale spatio-temporal feature (MuST) representation of input AER events and a spiking neural network (SNN) using spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) for object recognition with MuST. MuST extracts the features contained in both the spatial and temporal information of AER event flow, and meanwhile forms an informative and compact feature spike representation. We show not only how MuST exploits spikes to convey information more effectively, but a…

Biological neurons and their in-silico emulations for neuromorphic artificial intelligence (AI) use extraordinarily energy-efficient mechanisms, such as spike-based communication and local synaptic plasticity. It remains unclear whether these neuronal mechanisms only offer efficiency or also underlie the superiority of biological intelligence. Here, we prove rigorously that, indeed, the Bayes-optimal prediction and inference of randomly but continuously transforming environments, a common natural setting, relies on short-term spike-timing-dependent plasticity, a hallmark of biological synapses…
