We present a simulation scheme for simulating Brownian bridges on complete and connected Lie groups. We show how this simulation scheme leads to absolute continuity of the Brownian bridge measure with respect to the guided process measure. This result generalizes the Euclidean result of Delyon and Hu to Lie groups. We present numerical results of the guided process in the Lie group $\SO(3)$. In particular, we apply importance sampling to estimate the metric on $\SO(3)$ using an iterative maximum likelihood method.

Normalizing constant (also called partition function, Bayesian evidence, or marginal likelihood) is one of the central goals of Bayesian inference, yet most of the existing methods are both expensive and inaccurate. Here we develop a new approach, starting from posterior samples obtained with a standard Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). We apply a novel Normalizing Flow (NF) approach to obtain an analytic density estimator from these samples, followed by Optimal Bridge Sampling (OBS) to obtain the normalizing constant. We compare our method which we call Gaussianized Bridge Sampling (GBS) to ex…
Bridge sampling is a powerful Monte Carlo method for estimating ratios of normalizing constants. Various methods have been introduced to improve its efficiency. These methods aim to increase the overlap between the densities by applying appropriate transformations to them without changing their normalizing constants. In this paper, we first give a new estimator of the asymptotic relative mean square error (RMSE) of the optimal Bridge estimator by equivalently estimating an $f$-divergence between the two densities. We then utilize this framework and propose $f$-GAN-Bridge estimator ($f$-GB) bas…
Density ratio estimation (DRE) is a fundamental machine learning technique for comparing two probability distributions. However, existing methods struggle in high-dimensional settings, as it is difficult to accurately compare probability distributions based on finite samples. In this work we propose DRE-\infty, a divide-and-conquer approach to reduce DRE to a series of easier subproblems. Inspired by Monte Carlo methods, we smoothly interpolate between the two distributions via an infinite continuum of intermediate bridge distributions. We then estimate the instantaneous rate of change of the …
Bridge sampling is an effective Monte Carlo method for estimating the ratio of normalizing constants of two probability densities, a routine computational problem in statistics, physics, chemistry, and other fields. The Monte Carlo error of the bridge sampling estimator is determined by the amount of overlap between the two densities. In the case of uni-modal densities, Warp-I, II, and III transformations (Meng and Schilling, 2002) are effective for increasing the initial overlap, but they are less so for multi-modal densities. This paper introduces Warp-U transformations that aim to transform…
Let alpha,T>0. We study the asymptotic properties of a least squares estimator for the parameter alpha of a fractional bridge defined as dX_t=-alpha*X_t/(T-t)dt+dB_t, with t in [0,T) and where B is a fractional Brownian motion of Hurst index H>1/2. Depending on the value of alpha, we prove that we may have strong consistency or not as t tends to T. When we have consistency, we obtain the rate of this convergence as well. Also, we compare our results to the (known) case where B is replaced by a standard Brownian motion W.
Let $T>0,α>\frac12$. In the present paper we consider the $α$-Brownian bridge defined as $dX_t=-α\frac{X_t}{T-t}dt+dW_t,~ 0\leq t< T$, where $W$ is a standard Brownian motion. We investigate the optimal rate of convergence to normality of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) for the parameter $ α$ based on the continuous observation $\{X_s,0\leq s\leq t\}$ as $t\uparrow T$. We prove that an optimal rate of Kolmogorov distance for central limit theorem on the MLE is given by $\frac{1}{\sqrt{|\log(T-t)|}}$, as $t\uparrow T$. First we compute an upper bound and then find a lower bound with the …
The aim of this paper is to introduce an adaptive penalized estimator for identifying the true reduced parametric model under the sparsity assumption. In particular, we deal with the framework where the unpenalized estimator of the structural parameters needs simultaneously multiple rates of convergence (i.e. the so-called mixed-rates asymptotic behavior). We introduce a Bridge-type estimator by taking into account penalty functions involving $\ell^q$ norms $(0<q\leq 1)$. We prove that the proposed regularized estimator satisfies the oracle properties. Our approach is useful for the estimation…
This article is motivated by studying multisensory effects on brain activities in intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) experiments. Differential brain activities to multisensory stimulus presentations are zero in most regions and non-zero in some local regions, yielding locally sparse functions. Such studies are essentially a function-on-scalar regression problem, with interest being focused not only on estimating nonparametric functions but also on recovering the function supports. We propose a weighted group bridge approach for simultaneous function estimation and support recovery in f…
Data in non-Euclidean spaces are commonly encountered in many fields of Science and Engineering. For instance, in Robotics, attitude sensors capture orientation which is an element of a Lie group. In the recent past, several researchers have reported methods that take into account the geometry of Lie Groups in designing parameter estimation algorithms in nonlinear spaces. Maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) are quite commonly used for such tasks and it is well known in the field of statistics that Stein's shrinkage estimators dominate the MLE in a mean-squared sense assuming the observations a…
This paper considers the problem of estimating a mean pattern in the setting of Grenander's pattern theory. Shape variability in a data set of curves or images is modeled by the random action of elements in a compact Lie group on an infinite dimensional space. In the case of observations contaminated by an additive Gaussian white noise, it is shown that estimating a reference template in the setting of Grenander's pattern theory falls into the category of deconvolution problems over Lie groups. To obtain this result, we build an estimator of a mean pattern by using Fourier deconvolution and ha…
We propose simple methods for multivariate diffusion bridge simulation, which plays a fundamental role in simulation-based likelihood and Bayesian inference for stochastic differential equations. By a novel application of classical coupling methods, the new approach generalizes a previously proposed simulation method for one-dimensional bridges to the multi-variate setting. First a method of simulating approximate, but often very accurate, diffusion bridges is proposed. These approximate bridges are used as proposal for easily implementable MCMC algorithms that produce exact diffusion bridges.…

A recently proposed SLOPE estimator (arXiv:1407.3824) has been shown to adaptively achieve the minimax $\ell_2$ estimation rate under high-dimensional sparse linear regression models (arXiv:1503.08393). Such minimax optimality holds in the regime where the sparsity level $k$, sample size $n$, and dimension $p$ satisfy $k/p \rightarrow 0$, $k\log p/n \rightarrow 0$. In this paper, we characterize the estimation error of SLOPE under the complementary regime where both $k$ and $n$ scale linearly with $p$, and provide new insights into the performance of SLOPE estimators. We first derive a concent…
Noncommutative harmonic analysis is used to solve a nonparametric estimation problem stated in terms of compound Poisson processes on compact Lie groups. This problem of decompounding is a generalization of a similar classical problem. The proposed solution is based on a char- acteristic function method. The treated problem is important to recent models of the physical inverse problem of multiple scattering.
