Motivated by the abundance of uncertain event data from multiple sources including physical devices and sensors, this paper presents the task of relating a stochastic process observation to a process model that can be rendered from a dataset. In contrast to previous research that suggested to transform a stochastically known event log into a less informative uncertain log with upper and lower bounds on activity frequencies, we consider the challenge of accommodating the probabilistic knowledge into conformance checking techniques. Based on a taxonomy that captures the spectrum of conformance checking cases under stochastic process observations, we present three types of challenging cases. The first includes conformance checking of a stochastically known log with respect to a given process model. The second case extends the first to classify a stochastically known log into one of several process models. The third case extends the two previous ones into settings in which process models are only stochastically known. The suggested problem captures the increasingly growing number of applications in which sensors provide probabilistic process information.
Recent developments using directed acyclical graphs (i.e., influence diagrams and Bayesian networks) for knowledge representation have lessened the problems of using probability in knowledge-based systems (KBS). Most current research involves the efficient propagation of new evidence, but little has been done concerning the maintenance of domain-specific knowledge, which includes the probabilistic information about the problem domain. By making use of conditional independencies represented in she graphs, however, probability assessments are required only for certain variables when the knowledg…
Process mining is a subfield of process science that analyzes event data collected in databases called event logs. Recently, novel types of event data have become of interest due to the wide industrial application of process mining analyses. In this paper, we examine uncertain event data. Such data contain meta-attributes describing the amount of imprecision tied with attributes recorded in an event log. We provide examples of uncertain event data, present the state of the art in regard of uncertainty in process mining, and illustrate open challenges related to this research direction.
In this paper, we advocate the use of stratified logical theories for representing probabilistic models. We argue that such encodings can be more interpretable than those obtained in existing frameworks such as Markov logic networks. Among others, this allows for the use of domain experts to improve learned models by directly removing, adding, or modifying logical formulas.

We provide a framework for probabilistic reasoning in Vadalog-based Knowledge Graphs (KGs), satisfying the requirements of ontological reasoning: full recursion, powerful existential quantification, expression of inductive definitions. Vadalog is a Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) language based on Warded Datalog+/-, a logical core language of existential rules, with a good balance between computational complexity and expressive power. Handling uncertainty is essential for reasoning with KGs. Yet Vadalog and Warded Datalog+/- are not covered by the existing probabilistic logic prog…
Beginning with a simple semantics for propositions, based on counting observations, it is shown that probabilistic and fuzzy logic correspond to two different heuristic assumptions regarding the combination of propositions whose evidence bases are not currently available. These two different heuristic assumptions lead to two different sets of formulas for propagating quantitative truth values through lattice operations. It is shown that these two sets of formulas provide a natural grounding for the multiplicative and additive operator-sets in linear logic. The standard rules of linear logic th…
In this paper, we derive and implement a probabilistic programming idiom for the problem of acquiring new knowledge about an environment. The idiom is implemented utilizing a modern probabilistic programming language. We demonstrate the utility of this idiom by implementing an algorithm for the specific problem of active mapping and robot exploration. Finally, we evaluate the functionality of the implementation through an extensive simulation study utilizing the HouseExpo dataset.

Data-driven forecasts of air quality have recently achieved more accurate short-term predictions. Despite their success, most of the current data-driven solutions lack proper quantifications of model uncertainty that communicate how much to trust the forecasts. Recently, several practical tools to estimate uncertainty have been developed in probabilistic deep learning. However, there have not been empirical applications and extensive comparisons of these tools in the domain of air quality forecasts. Therefore, this work applies state-of-the-art techniques of uncertainty quantification in a rea…
We study abductive, causal, and non-causal conditionals in indicative and counterfactual formulations using probabilistic truth table tasks under incomplete probabilistic knowledge (N = 80). We frame the task as a probability-logical inference problem. The most frequently observed response type across all conditions was a class of conditional event interpretations of conditionals; it was followed by conjunction interpretations. An interesting minority of participants neglected some of the relevant imprecision involved in the premises when inferring lower or upper probability bounds on the targ…

Knowledge bases often consist of facts which are harvested from a variety of sources, many of which are noisy and some of which conflict, resulting in a level of uncertainty for each triple. Knowledge bases are also often incomplete, prompting the use of embedding methods to generalize from known facts, however, existing embedding methods only model triple-level uncertainty, and reasoning results lack global consistency. To address these shortcomings, we propose BEUrRE, a novel uncertain knowledge graph embedding method with calibrated probabilistic semantics. BEUrRE models each entity as a bo…

Knowledge graph construction consists of two tasks: extracting information from external resources (knowledge population) and inferring missing information through a statistical analysis on the extracted information (knowledge completion). In many cases, insufficient external resources in the knowledge population hinder the subsequent statistical inference. The gap between these two processes can be reduced by an incremental population approach. We propose a new probabilistic knowledge graph factorisation method that benefits from the path structure of existing knowledge (e.g. syllogism) and e…
In probabilistic reasoning, the traditionally discrete domain has been elevated to the hybrid domain encompassing additionally continuous random variables. Inference in the hybrid domain, however, usually necessitates to condone trade-offs on either the inference on discrete or continuous random variables. We introduce a novel approach based on weighted model integration and algebraic model counting that circumvents these trade-offs. We then show how it supports knowledge compilation and exact probabilistic inference. Moreover, we introduce the hybrid probabilistic logic programming language H…

A central question for knowledge representation is how to encode and handle uncertain knowledge adequately. We introduce the probabilistic description logic ALCP that is designed for representing context-dependent knowledge, where the actual context taking place is uncertain. ALCP allows the expression of logical dependencies on the domain and probabilistic dependencies on the possible contexts. In order to draw probabilistic conclusions, we employ the principle of maximum entropy. We provide reasoning algorithms for this logic, and show that it satisfies several desirable properties of probab…
Medical knowledge graphs (KGs) constructed from Electronic Medical Records (EMR) contain abundant information about patients and medical entities. The utilization of KG embedding models on these data has proven to be efficient for different medical tasks. However, existing models do not properly incorporate patient demographics and most of them ignore the probabilistic features of the medical KG. In this paper, we propose DARLING (Demographic Aware pRobabiListic medIcal kNowledge embeddinG), a demographic-aware medical KG embedding framework that explicitly incorporates demographics in the med…
