Optical travelling wave antennas offer unique opportunities to control and selectively guide light into a specific direction which renders them as excellent candidates for optical communication and sensing. These applications require state of the art engineering to reach optimized functionalities such as high directivity and radiation efficiency, low side lobe level, broadband and tunable capabilities, and compact design. In this work we report on the numerical optimization of the directivity of optical travelling wave antennas made from low-loss dielectric materials using full-wave numerical simulations in conjunction with a particle swarm optimization algorithm. The antennas are composed of a reflector and a director deposited on a glass substrate and an emitter placed in the feed gap between them serves as an internal source of excitation. In particular, we analysed antennas with rectangular- and horn-shaped directors made of either Hafnium dioxide or Silicon. The optimized antennas produce highly directional emission due to the presence of two dominant guided TE modes in the director in addition to leaky modes. These guided modes dominate the far-field emission pattern and govern the direction of the main lobe emission which predominately originates from the end facet of the director. Our work also provides a comprehensive analysis of the modes, radiation patterns, parametric influences, and bandwidths of the antennas that highlights their robust nature.
Directive optical leaky wave antennas (OLWAs) with tunable radiation pattern are promising integrated optical modulation and scanning devices. OLWAs fabricated using CMOS-compatible semiconductor planar waveguide technology have the potential of providing high directivity with electrical tunability for modulation and switching capabilities. We experimentally demonstrate directive radiation from a silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) waveguide-based OLWA. The OLWA design comprises 50 crystalline Si perturbations buried inside the waveguide, with a period of 1 μm, each with a length of 260 nm and a heigh…
We provide for the first time the detailed study of the radiation performance of an optical leaky wave antenna (OLWA) integrated into a Fabry-Pérot resonator. We show that the radiation pattern can be expressed as the one generated by the interference of two leaky waves counter-propagating in the resonator leading to a design procedure for achieving optimized broadside radiation, i.e., normal to the waveguide axis. We thus report a realizable implementation of the OLWA made of semiconductor and dielectric regions. The theoretical modeling is supported by full-wave simulation results, which are…
Conventional surface-relief gratings are inefficient at deflecting normally-incident light by large angles. This constrains their use in many applications and limits the overall efficiency of any optical instrument integrating gratings. Here, we demonstrate a simple approach for the design of diffraction gratings that can be highly efficient for large deflection angles, while also offering additional functionality. The gratings are composed of a unit cell comprising a vertically-oriented asymmetric slot-waveguide. The unit cell shows oscillating unidirectional scattering behavior that can be p…
For the purpose of using plasmonics in an integrated scheme where single emitters can be probed efficiently, we experimentally and theoretically study the scattering properties of single nano-rod gold antennas as well as antenna arrays placed on one-dimensional dielectric silicon nitride waveguides. Using real space and Fourier microscopy correlated with waveguide transmission measurements, we quantify the spectral properties, absolute strength and directivity of scattering. The scattering processes can be well understood in the framework of the physics of dipolar objects placed on a planar la…
An optical signal that propagates along a conventional waveguide is back reflected at waveguide terminations. If the waveguide permits only one-way propagation, this back reflection cannot take place; the optical signal undergoes a nearly 100% conversion to radiation modes. Hence, a terminated one-way waveguide may serve as a matched nano-antenna with a natural guiding and feeding mechanism. We examine the termination effect in a recently suggested nano-scale one-way plasmonic waveguide, and its properties as a matched nano antenna are shown. Since one-way structures are inherently non-recipro…
We demonstrate experimentally the resonant extinction of THz radiation by a single plasmonic bowtie antenna, formed by two n-doped Si monomers with a triangular shape and facing apexes. This demonstration is achieved by placing the antenna at the output aperture of a conically tapered waveguide, which enhances the intensity of the incident THz field at the antenna position by a factor 10. The waveguide also suppresses the background radiation that otherwise is transmitted without being scattered by the antenna. Bowtie antennas, supporting localized surface plasmon polaritons, are relevant due …
Tuning the near-field using all-dielectric nano-antennae offers a promising approach for trapping atoms, which could enable strong single-atom/photon coupling. Here we report the simulation results of an optical trapping concept, in which a silicon nano-antenna produces a trapping potential for atoms in a chip-scale configuration. Using counter-propagating incident fields, bichromatically detuned from the atomic cesium D-lines, we numerically investigate the dependence of the optical potential on the nano-antenna geometry. We tailor the near-field potential landscape by tuning the evanescent f…
This work presents the radiation performance of open-ended circular-waveguide probe antennas that have been miniaturized by the introduction of thin metamaterial liners. The liners introduce an HE$_{11}$ mode well below the natural cutoff frequency, which provides substantial gain improvements over a similarly sized waveguide probe. A new feeding arrangement employing a shielded-loop source embedded inside the miniaturized waveguide is developed to efficiently excite the HE$_{11}$ mode and avoid the excitation of other modes across the frequency reduced band while maintaining the antenna's com…
We demonstrate a silicon nitride trench waveguide deposited with bowtie antennas for plasmonic enhanced optical trapping. The sub-micron silicon nitride trench waveguides were fabricated with conventional optical lithography in a low cost manner. The waveguides embrace not only low propagation loss and high nonlinearity, but also the inborn merits of combining micro-fluidic channel and waveguide together. Analyte contained in the trapezoidal trench channel can interact with the evanescent field from the waveguide beneath. The evanescent field can be further enhanced by plasmonic nanostructures…
We present the design of a compact and highly sensitive electric field sensor based on a bowtie antenna-coupled slot photonic crystal waveguide (PCW). An electro-optic (EO) polymer with a large EO coefficient, r33=100pm/V, is used to refill the PCW slot and air holes. Bowtie-shaped electrodes are used as both poling electrodes and as receiving antenna. The slow-light effect in the PCW is used to increase the effective in-device r33>1000pm/V. The slot PCW is designed for low-dispersion slow light propagation, maximum poling efficiency as well as optical mode confinement inside the EO polymer. T…
Using 10 monopole antennas reaching into a rectangular multi mode waveguide we shape the incident wave to create specific transport even after scattering events. Each antenna is attached to an IQ-Modulator, which allows the adjustment of the amplitude and phase in a broad band range of 6-18 GHz. All of them are placed in the near field of the other, thus the excitation of an individual antenna is influenced by the presence of the other antennas. Still these 10 antennas are sufficient to generate any combination of the 10 propagating modes in the far field. At the output the propagating modes a…
Near-zero-index platforms arise as a new opportunity for light manipulation with boosting of optical nonlinearities, transmission properties in waveguides and constant phase distribution. In addition, they represent a solution to impedance mismatch faced in photonic circuitry offering several applications in quantum photonics, communication and sensing. However, their realization is limited to availability of materials that could exhibit such low-index. For materials used in the visible and near-infrared wavelengths, the intrinsic losses annihilate most of near-zero index properties. The desig…
A planar magneto-electric (ME) dipole antenna array is proposed and demonstrated by both full-wave analysis and experiments. The proposed structure leverages the infinite wavelength propagation characteristic of composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines to form high-gain magnetic radiators combined with radial conventional electric radiators, where the overall structure is excited by a single differential feed. The traveling-wave type nature of the proposed ME-dipole antenna enables the formation of directive arrays with high-gain characteristics and scanning capability. Peak gains…
A novel plasmonic waveguide-coupled nanocavity with a monopole antenna is proposed to localize the optical power from a hybrid plasmonic waveguide and subsequently convert it into electrical current. The nanocavity is designed as a Fabry-Pérot waveguide resonator, while the monopole antenna is made of a metallic nanorod directly mounted onto the metallic part of the waveguide terminal which acts as the conducting ground. The nanocavity coincides with the antenna feed sandwiched in between the antenna and the ground. Maximum power from the waveguide can be coupled into, and absorbed in the nano…
With the explosion of wireless networks and automotive radar systems, there is an acute need for new materials and technologies that would not only minimize the size of these devices, but also enhance their performances. The technique of transformation optics-an innovative approach to produce artificial metamaterials that control electromagnetic waves as if space itself was transformed-provides unique opportunities to reach this goal. In this paper we design, fabricate and characterize a new class of metamaterial capable of transforming the source distribution and radiation pattern of an isotr…
Electromagnetic (EM) wave detection over a large spectrum has recently attracted significant amount of attention. Traditional electronic EM wave sensors use large metallic probes which distort the field to be measured and also have strict limitations on the detectable RF bandwidth. To address these problems, integrated photonic EM wave sensors have been developed to provide high sensitivity and broad bandwidth. Previously we demonstrated a compact, broadband, and sensitive integrated photonic EM wave sensor, consisting of an organic electro-optic (EO) polymer refilled silicon slot photonic cry…
A leaky-wave antenna at optical frequencies is designed and integrated with a ring resonator at 1550 nm wavelength. The leaky wave is generated by using periodic perturbations in the integrated dielectric waveguide that excite the -1 spatial harmonic. The antenna consists of a dielectric waveguides with semiconductor corrugations, and it is compatible with CMOS fabrication technology. We show that integrating the leaky wave antenna in an optical ring resonator that is fed by directional couplers, we can improve the electronic control of the radiation through carrier injection into the semicond…
Plasmonic antennas integrated on silicon devices have large and yet unexplored potential for controlling and routing light signals. Here, we present theoretical calculations of a hybrid silicon-metallic system in which a single gold nanoantenna embedded in a single-mode silicon waveguide acts as a resonance-driven filter. As a consequence of scattering and interference, when the resonance condition of the antenna is met, the transmission drops by 85% in the resonant frequency band. Firstly, we study analytically the interaction between the propagating mode and the antenna by including radiativ…
Small form-factor, narrowband, and highly directive antennas are of critical importance in a variety of applications spanning wireless communications, remote sensing, Raman spectroscopy, and single photon emission enhancement. Surprisingly, we show that the classical directivity limit can be appreciably surpassed for electrically small multilayer spherical antennas excited by a point electric dipole even if limiting ourselves to purely dielectric materials. Experimentally feasible designs of superdirective antennas are established by using a stochastic optimization algorithm combined with a ri…
Single-molecule approaches to biology offer a powerful new vision to elucidate the mechanisms that underpin the functioning of living cells. However, conventional optical single molecule spectroscopy techniques such as Förster fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) or fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) are limited by diffraction to the nanomolar concentration range, far below the physiological micromolar concentration range where most biological reaction occur. To breach the diffraction limit, zero mode waveguides and plasmonic antennas exploit the surface plasmon resonances to…
We present a brief overview of the transport of quantum light across a one-dimensional waveguide which is integrated with a periodic string of quantum-scale dipoles. We demonstrate a scheme to implement transparency by suitably tuning the atomic frequencies without applying a coupling field and bring out the pronounced non-reciprocity of this optical device. The fiber-mediated interaction between integrated dipoles allows one to achieve both dispersive and dissipative couplings, level repulsion and attraction, and enhanced sensing capabilities. All these ideas can be translated to a wide varie…
Controlling the launching efficiencies and the directionality of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and their decoupling to freely propagating light is a major goal for the development of plasmonic devices and systems. Here, we report on the design and experimental observation of a highly efficient unidirectional surface plasmon launcher composed of eleven subwavelength grooves, each with a distinct depth and width. Our observations show that, under normal illumination by a focused Gaussian beam, unidirectional SPP launching with an efficiency of at least 52% is achieved experimentally with a c…
Potentially Separate waves could propagate independently with arbitrary amplitude and phase, if one longitudinal septum is inserted in the H-Plane of the circular waveguide. The presented paper has implemented this idea in order to excite hat feed antenna simultaneously with two in-phase and out of phase signals and leads to sum and difference patterns.
Optical antennas made of low-loss dielectrics have several advantages over plasmonic antennas, including high radiative quantum efficiency, negligible heating and excellent photostability. However, due to weak spatial confinement, conventional dielectric antennas fail to offer light-matter interaction strengths on par with those of plasmonic antennas. We propose here an all-dielectric antenna configuration that can support strongly confined modes ($V\sim10^{-4}λ_{0}^3$) while maintaining unity antenna quantum efficiency. This configuration consists of a high-index pillar structure with a trans…
We demonstrate the use of amplitude- and phase-resolved near-field mapping for direct characterization of plasmonic slot waveguide mode propagation and excitation with nanocouplers in the telecom wavelength range. We measure mode's propagation length, effective index and field distribution and directly evaluate the relative coupling efficiencies for various couplers configurations. We report 26- and 15-fold improvements in the coupling efficiency with two serially connected dipole and modified bow-tie antennas, respectively, as compared to that of the short-circuited waveguide termination.
We analyze the impact of nonlocality on the waveguide modes of metallo-dielectric multilayers and optical patch antennas, the latter formed from metal strips closely spaced above a metallic plane. We model both the nonlocal effects associated with the conduction electrons of the metal, as well as the previously overlooked response of bound electrons. We show that the fundamental mode of a metal-dielectric-metal waveguide, sometimes called the gap-plasmon, is very sensitive to nonlocality when the insulating, dielectric layers are thinner than 5 nm. We suggest that optical patch antennas, which…
We investigate a tapered, hybrid plasmonic waveguide which has previously been proposed as an optically efficient near-field transducer (NFT), or component thereof, in several devices which aim to exploit nanofocused light. We numerically analyze how light is transported through the waveguide and ultimately focused via effective-mode coupling and taper optimization. Crucial dimensional parameters in this optimization process are identified that are not only necessary to achieve maximum optical throughput, but also optimum thermal performance with specific application towards heat-assisted magn…
One-dimensional structures of non-Hermitian plasmonic metallic nanospheres are studied in this paper. For a single sphere, solving Maxwell's equations results in quasi-stationary eigenmodes with complex quantized frequencies. Coupled mode theory is employed in order to study more complex structures. The similarity between the coupled mode equations and the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians governing open quantum systems allows us to translate a series of collective phenomenon emerging in condensed matter and nuclear physics to the system of plasmonic spheres. A nontrivial physics emerges as…
Terahertz technology is largely dependent upon planar on-chip antennas that radiate downwards through the substrate, and so an effective means to interface these antennas with integrated waveguides is an attractive prospect. We present a viable methodology for backside coupling between a terahertz oscillator chip and a broadband all-intrinsic-silicon dielectric waveguide. Our investigation employs resonant tunneling diodes as compact two-terminal electronic terahertz oscillators, and terahertz waves are observed from 270 GHz to 409 GHz. The fact that this power is accessed via a curved length …
The first waveguide coupled phosphide-based UTC photodiodes grown by Solid Source Molecular Beam Epitaxy (SSMBE) are reported in this paper. Metal Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) and Gas Source MBE (GSMBE) have long been the predominant growth techniques for the production of high quality InGaAsP materials. The use of SSMBE overcomes the major issue associated with the unintentional diffusion of zinc in MOVPE and gives the benefit of the superior control provided by MBE growth techniques without the costs and the risks of handling toxic gases of GSMBE. The UTC epitaxial structure contains…
