An energetic muon beam is an attractive key to unlock new physics beyond the Standard Model: the lepton flavor violation or the anomalous magnetic moment, and also is a competitive candidate for the expected neutrino factory. Lots of the muon scientific applications are limited by low flux cosmic-ray muons, low energy muon sources or extremely expensive muon accelerators. An prompt acceleration of the low-energy muon beam is found in the beam-driven plasma wakefield up to $\mathrm{TV/m}$. The muon beam is accelerated from $275\mathrm{MeV}$ to more than $10\mathrm{GeV}$ within $22.5\mathrm{ps}$. Choosing the injection time of the muon beam in a proper range, the longitudinal spatial distribution and the energy distribution of the accelerated muon beam are compressed. The efficiency of the energy transfer from the driven electron beam to the muon beam can reach $20\%$. The prompt acceleration scheme is a promising avenue to bring the expected neutrino factory and the muon collider into reality and to catch new physics beyond the Standard Model.
Muon acceleration using a radio-frequency accelerator was recently demonstrated for the first time. Measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex is the first experiment using accelerated muon beams, and construction will begin soon. The radio-frequency accelerator used in the experiment and the first muon acceleration are described in this paper.
Muons have been accelerated by using a radio frequency accelerator for the first time. Negative muonium atoms (Mu$^-$), which are bound states of positive muons ($μ^+$) and two electrons, are generated from $μ^+$'s through the electron capture process in an aluminum degrader. The generated Mu$^-$'s are initially electrostatically accelerated and injected into a radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). In the RFQ, the Mu$^-$'s are accelerated to 89 keV. The accelerated Mu$^-$'s are identified by momentum measurement and time of flight. This compact muon linac opens the door to various muon accel…
We summarize the current state of a concept for muon acceleration aimed at a future Neutrino Factory. The main thrust of these studies was to reduce the overall cost while maintaining performance by exploring the interplay between the complexity of the cooling systems and the acceptance of the accelerator complex. To ensure adequate survival for the short-lived muons, acceleration must occur at high average gradient. The need for large transverse and longitudinal acceptances drives the design of the acceleration system to an initially low RF frequency, e.g., 325 MHz, which is then increased to…
The design of a future multi-TeV muon collider needs new ideas to overcome the technological challenges related to muon production, cooling, accumulation and acceleration. In this paper a layout of a positron driven muon source known as the Low EMittance Muon Accelerator (LEMMA) concept is presented. The positron beam, stored in a ring with high energy acceptance and low emittance, is extracted and driven to a multi-target system, to produce muon pairs at threshold. This solution alleviates the issues related to the power deposited and the integrated Peak Energy Density Deposition (PEDD) on th…

Muon colliders have a great potential for high-energy physics. They can offer collisions of point-like particles at very high energies, since muons can be accelerated in a ring without limitation from synchrotron radiation. However, the need for high luminosity faces technical challenges which arise from the short muon lifetime at rest and the difficulty of producing large numbers of muons in bunches with small emittance. Addressing these challenges requires the development of innovative concepts and demanding technologies. The document summarizes the work done, the progress achieved and new r…
The relative immunity of muons to synchrotron radiation suggests that they might be used in place of electrons as probes in fundamental high-energy physics experiments. Muons are commonly produced indirectly through pion decay by interaction of a charged particle beam with a target. However, the large angle and energy dispersion of the initial beams as well as the short muon lifetime limits many potential applications. Here, we describe a fast method for manipulating the longitudinal and transverse phase-space of a divergent pion-muon beam to enable efficient capture and downstream transport w…
An intense beam of muons is needed to provide a luminosity on the order of 10$^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for a multi-TeV collider. Because muons produced by colliding a multi-MW proton beam with a target made of carbon or mercury have a large phase space, significant six dimensional cooling is required. Through ionization cooling - the only cooling method that works within the lifetime of the muon - and emittance exchange, the desired emittances for a Higgs Factory or higher energy collider are attainable. A cooling channel utilizing gas filled radio frequency cavities has been designed to deliv…
A novel device to compress the phase space of a muon beam by a factor of $10^{10}$ with a $10^{-3}$ efficiency is under development. A surface muon beam is stopped in a helium gas target consisting of several compression stages, wherein strong electric and magnetic fields are applied. The spatial extent of the stopped muon swarm is decreased by means of these fields until muons with eV energy are extracted into vacuum through a small orifice. It was measured that a 20 cm long muon stop distribution can be compressed in longitudinal direction to sub-mm extent within 2 ${\rm μs}$. Additionally, …
We report here a systematic quantitative study on generation and characteristics of an active muon source driven by the interaction of an electron beam within the energy range of 1 to 10 GeV from laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) with a tungsten target, using Monte Carlo simulations. The 10GeV electron beam, achievable in near future, from LWFA using femtosecond multi-PW lasers is employed to drive the bright source of muon pairs in a compact setup. We show that a highly directional and intense source of short-pulsed GeV muon pairs having peak brightness 5x10^17 pairs/s/cm^2/sr and sub-100-p…
Electrical space thrusters show important advantages for applications in outer space compared to chemical thrusters, as they allow a longer mission lifetime with lower weight and propellant consumption. Mature technologies on the market today accelerate positive ions to generate thrust. The ion beam is neutralized by electrons downstream, and this need for an additional neutralization system has some drawbacks related to stability, lifetime and total weight and power consumption. Many new concepts, to get rid of the neutralizer, have been proposed, and the PEGASES ion-ion thruster is one of th…
