The dynamical behavior of quantum correlations captured by different forms Measurement-Induced Nonlocality (MIN) between two atoms coupled with thermal reservoirs is investigated and compared with the entanglement. It is shown that the MIN quantities are more robust, while noise causes sudden death in entanglement. Further, we quantified the quantum correlation with weak measurement, and the effect of measurement strength is observed. The role of mean photon number and weak measurement on quantum correlation is also highlighted.
Quantum dissipation is studied for a discrete system that linearly interacts with a reservoir of harmonic oscillators at thermal equilibrium. Initial correlations between system and reservoir are assumed to be absent. The dissipative dynamics as determined by the unitary evolution of system and reservoir is described by a Kraus map consisting of an infinite number of matrices. For all Laplace-transformed Kraus matrices exact solutions are constructed in terms of continued fractions that depend on the pair correlation functions of the reservoir.
We consider a quantum Otto cycle operating between two squeezed thermal reservoirs. The influences of the squeezing degree on the optimization performance of quantum Otto heat engines and refrigerators are investigated. We demonstrate that under symmetric condition, the efficiency at maximum power (EMP) of heat engines and the coefficient of performance (COP) at maximum \c{hi} criterion of refrigerators are equal to Curzon-Ahlborn (CA) efficiency and CA COP, respectively. We also found that under asymmetric condition, the EMP of heat engines can be improved when the squeezing degree of hot the…
The dynamics of entanglement between two-level atoms immersed in a common photon reservoir at finite temperature is investigated. It is shown that in the regime of strong correlations there are nontrivial asymptotic states which can be interpreted in terms of thermal generalization of Werner states.
We study the entanglement generated in the steady state of two interacting qubits coupled to thermal reservoirs. We show that the amount of steady-state entanglement can be enhanced by the presence of a third thermal reservoir which is common to both qubits. Specifically, we find that entanglement can be enhanced as long as the temperature of the common reservoir is below the thermalisation temperature of the qubits, whenever a single temperature can be assigned to the steady state of the qubits in the absence of the common reservoir. Moreover, the amount of entanglement generated with the com…
We study the decoherence speed limit (DSL) of a single impurity atom immersed in a Bose-Einsteincondensed (BEC) reservoir when the impurity atom is in a double-well potential. We demonstrate how the DSL of the impurity atom can be manipulated by engineering the BEC reservoir and the impurity potential within experimentally realistic limits. We show that the DSL can be controlled by changing key parameters such as the condensate scattering length, the effective dimension of the BEC reservoir, and the spatial configuration of the double-well potential imposed on the impurity. We uncover the phys…
We study how the thermalization time of a single radiation cavity-field mode changes drastically depending on the type of the atomic reservoir it interacts. Temporal evolution of the field is analyzed within the micromaser scheme, where each atomic reservoir is modeled as a beam of atoms crossing an electromagnetic cavity in which they weakly interact with the field. The cavity-field thermalizes when we consider either multi-atom or multi-level atom reservoirs. We found that each atomic reservoir generates a different scaling law in the thermalization time of the cavity-field. Such scaling law…
We analyse the problem of a two-level atom interacting with a time-dependent dissipative environment modelled by a bath of reservoir modes. In the model of this paper the principal features of the reservoir structure remain constant in time, but the microscopic structure does not. In the context of an atom in a leaky cavity this corresponds to a fixed cavity and a time-dependent external bath. In this situation we show that by chirping the reservoir modes sufficiently fast it is possible to inhibit, or dramatically enhance the decay of the atomic system, even though the gross reservoir structu…
We present results concerning aspects of quantum thermodynamics under the background of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics for the dynamics of a quantum harmonic oscillator. Since a better control over the parameters in quantum thermodynamics processes is desired, we use concepts from collisional model to introduce a simple prototype of thermal reservoir based on $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians and study its effects under the thermalization process of a single harmonic oscillator prepared in a displaced thermal state. We verify that controlling the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric features of the r…
The breaking of reciprocity is a topic of great interest in fundamental physics and optical information processing applications. We demonstrate non-reciprocal light transport in a quantum system of hot atoms by engineering the dissipative atomic reservoir. Our scheme is based on the phase-sensitive light transport in a multi-channel photon-atom interaction configuration, where the phase of collective atomic excitations is tunable through external driving fields. Remarkably, we observe inter-channel quantum correlations which originate from interactions with the judiciously engineered reservoir…
In this paper we examine the decay of quantum correlations for the radiation field in a two-mode squeezed thermal state in contact with local thermal reservoirs. Two measures of the evolving quantum correlations are compared: the entanglement of formation and the quantum discord. We derive analytic expressions of the entanglement-death time in two special cases: when the reservoirs for each mode are identical, as well as when a single reservoir acts on the first mode only. In the latter configuration, we show that all the pure Gaussian states lose their entanglement at the same time determined…
In this work, we consider a 2-state quantum system interacting with a thermal reservoir. By computing the long time limit of the probability for the system to be in the ground state according to the Schrodinger/Von Neumann equation, we reach a contradiction with the prediction of equilibrium statistical mechanics. The most likely explanation is that the Schrodinger equation is incomplete as a description of such systems, because the other assumptions made herein have a wider range of experimental support.
We apply reservoir engineering to construct a thermal environment with controllable temperature in an ultracold atomic Rydberg system. A Boltzmann distribution of the system's eigenstates is produced by optically driving a small environment of ultracold atoms, which is coupled to a photonic continuum through spontaneous emission. This technique provides a useful tool for quantum simulation of dynamics coupled to a thermal environment. Additionally, we demonstrate that pure eigenstates, such as Bell states, can be prepared in the Rydberg atomic system using this method.

Manipulation of sudden death of entanglement (ESD) of two qubits interacting with statistically uncorrelated thermal reservoirs is investigated. It is shown that for initially prepared X-states of the two qubits a simple (necessary and sufficient) criterion for ESD can be derived with the help of the Peres-Horodecki criterion. This criterion implies that, in contrast to the zero-temperature case, at finite temperature of at least one of the reservoirs all initially prepared two-qubit X-states exhibit ESD. General conditions are derived under which ESD can be hastened, delayed, or averted.
The resource theory of thermal operations explains the state transformations that are possible in a very specific thermodynamic setting: there is only one thermal bath, auxiliary systems can only be in corresponding thermal state (free states), and the interaction must commute with the free Hamiltonian (free operation). In this paper we study the mildest deviation: the reservoir particles are subject to inhomogeneities, either in the local temperature (introducing resource states) or in the local Hamiltonian (generating a resource operation). For small inhomogeneities, the two models generate …
We present a way to engineer an effective anti-Jaynes-Cumming and a Jaynes-Cumming interaction between an atomic system and a single cavity mode and show how to employ it in reservoir engineering processes. To construct the effective Hamiltonian, we analyse considered the interaction of an atomic system in a \{Lambda} configuration, driven by classical fields, with a single cavity mode. With this interaction, we firstly show how to generate a decoherence-free displaced squeezed state for the cavity field. In our scheme, an atomic beam works as a reservoir for the radiation field trapped inside…
In this paper, we study the exact dynamics of general open systems interacting with its environment through particle exchanges. The paper includes two main results. First, by taking advantage of the propagating function in the coherent state representation, we solve the exact master equation, whose solution is expressed in terms of the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. Second, in the dynamical perspective, we provide a rigorous thermalization process of open quantum systems.
We present a formalism that enables the study of the non-Markovian dynamics of a three-level ladder system in a single structured reservoir. The three-level system is strongly coupled to a bath of reservoir modes and two quantum excitations of the reservoir are expected. We show that the dynamics only depends on reservoir structure functions, which are products of the mode density with the coupling constant squared. This result may enable pseudomode theory to treat multiple excitations of a structured reservoir. The treatment uses Laplace transforms and an elimination of variables to obtain a …
We explore the perspective of considering the squeezed thermal reservoir as an equilibrium reservoir in a generalized Gibbs ensemble with two non-commuting conserved quantities. We outline the main properties of such a reservoir in terms of the exchange of energy, both heat and work, and entropy, giving some key examples to clarify its physical interpretation. This new paradigm allows for a correct and insightful interpretation of all thermodynamical features of the squeezed thermal reservoir, as well as other similar non-thermal reservoirs, including the characterization of reversibility and …
The dissipative and decoherence properties of the two-level atom interacting with the squeezed vacuum field reservoir are investigated based on the nonautonomous master equation of the atomic density matrix in the framework of algebraic dynamics. The nonautonomous master equation is converted into a Schrödinger-like equations and its dynamical symmetry is found based on the left and right representations of the relevant algebra. The time-dependent solution and the steady solution are obtained analytically. The asymptotic behavior of the solution is examined and the approach to the equilibrium …
We analyze the performance of a quantum Otto cycle, employing time-dependent harmonic oscillator as the working fluid undergoing sudden expansion and compression strokes during the adiabatic stages, coupled to a squeezed reservoir. First, we show that the maximum efficiency that our engine can achieve is 1/2 only, which is in contrast with the earlier studies claiming unit efficiency under the effect of squeezed reservoir. Then, we obtain analytic expressions for the upper bound on the efficiency as well as on the coefficient of performance of the Otto cycle. The obtained bounds are independen…
In this paper, the dynamics of fluorescent light emitted by a two-level atom interacts with squeezed vacuum reservoir is studied wisely using two-time correlation function fundamentals. The mathematical analysis shows the fluorescent spectrum of light emitted by the atom is turned out to be a single peak at a Lorentz's frequency. On the other hand, the squeezed vacuum reservoir input is responsible to the stimulated emission of photon from the atom. Moreover, it is identified that thermal reservoir is more efficient than squeezed vacuum reservoir to have valuable power spectrum.
Entangled states play a crucial role in quantum information protocols, thus the dynamical behavior of entanglement is of a great importance. In this paper we consider a two-mode squeezed vacuum state coupled to one thermal reservoir as a model of an entangled state embedded in an environment. As a criterion for entanglement we use a continuous-variable equivalent of the Peres-Horodecki criterion, namely the Simon criterion. To quantify entanglement we use the logarithmic negativity. We derive a condition, which assures that the state remains entangled in spite of the interaction with the reser…
By using the effective non-Markovian measure [H.P. Breuer, E.M. Laine, J. Piilo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 210401 (2009)], we investigate non-Markovian dynamics of a pair of two-level atoms (TLAs) system, each of which interacting with a local reservoir. We show that subsystem dynamics can be controlled by manipulating the coupling between TLAs, temperature and relaxation rate of the atoms. Moreover, the correlation between non-Markovianity of subsystem and entanglement between the subsystem and the structured bath is investigated, the results show that the emergence of non-Markovianity has a nega…
Landauer's erasure principle is a cornerstone of thermodynamics and information theory. According to this principle, erasing information incurs a minimum energy cost. Recently, Vaccaro and Barnett [Proc. R. Soc {\bf 467}, 1770 (2011)] explored information erasure in the context of multiple conserved quantities and showed that the erasure cost can be solely in terms of spin angular momentum. As Landauer's erasure principle plays a fundamental role in heat engines, their result considerably widens the possible configurations that heat engines can have. Motivated by this, we propose here a novel …
We analyze the spontaneous emission of a two-level atom interacting with a special class of structured reservoirs of field modes with band gap edge coinciding with the atomic transition frequency. The exact time evolution of the population of the excited level is evaluated analytically through series of Fox-$H$ functions. Over estimated long time scales, inverse power law relaxations emerge, with powers decreasing continuously to 2 according to the choice of the special reservoir. No trapping of the population of the excited level emerges. The same results are recovered in presence of $N-1$ at…
We study a quantum Szilard engine that is not powered by heat drawn from a thermal reservoir, but rather by projective measurements. The engine is constituted of a system $\mathcal{S}$, a weight $\mathcal{W}$, and a Maxwell demon $\mathcal{D}$, and extracts work via measurement-assisted feedback control. By imposing natural constraints on the measurement and feedback processes, such as energy conservation and leaving the memory of the demon intact, we show that while the engine can function without heat from a thermal reservoir, it must give up at least one of the following features that are s…
The violation of Leggett-Garg type inequalities (LGtIs) is studied on a two level atom, driven by an external field in the presence of a squeezed thermal reservoir. The violations are observed in the underdamped regime where the spontaneous transition rate is much smaller compared to the Rabi frequency. Increase in thermal effects is found to decrease the extent of violation as well as the time over which the violation lasts. With increase in the value squeezing parameter the extent of violation of LGtIs is seen to reduce. The violation of LGtIs is favored by increase in the driving frequency.…
We present the exact theory of quantum engines whose working medium is a network of driven oscillators performing an arbitrary cyclic process while coupled to thermal and nonthermal reservoirs. We show that when coupled to a single reservoir work cannot be extracted unless there is population inversion, and prove that the ratio between the heat flowing out and into the working medium cannot be arbitrarily small, satisfying a form of Clausius inequality. We use such identity to prove that the efficiency of linear quantum engines satisfies a generalized bound, which coincides with the Carnot lim…
We study a single two-level atom interacting with a reservoir of modes defined by its reservoir structure function. Within this framework we are able to define a density of entanglement involving a continuum of reservoir modes. The density of entanglement is derived for a system with a single excitation by taking a limit of the global entanglement. Utilizing the density of entanglement we quantify the entanglement between the atom and the modes, and also between the reservoir modes themselves.
Abstract Reservoir engineering is an important tool for quantum information science and quantum thermodynamics since it allows for preparing and/or protecting special quantum states of single or multipartite systems or to investigate fundamental questions of the thermodynamics as quantum thermal machines and their efficiencies. Here we employ this technique to engineer reservoirs with arbitrary (effective) negative and positive temperatures for a single spin system. To this end, we firstly engineer an appropriate interaction between a qubit system, a carbon nuclear spin, to a fermionic reservo…
We investigate the dynamical properties of the finite-size Dicke model coupled to a photon reservoir in the dispersive regime. The system-reservoir coupling in our Hamiltonian includes counter-rotating terms, which are relevant in the strong atom-cavity coupling. Because the dispersive regime is considered, the dynamics of low-energy states are described sufficiently accurately within the finite-dimensional subspace of the dressed states. Using the separation of the time scales between the system and the reservoir, we derive the Markovian quantum master equation in the subspace without ignorin…
We study the non-Markovianity and quantum speedup of a two-level atom (quantum system of interest) in a dissipative Jaynes-Cumming model, where the atom is embedded in a single-mode cavity, which is leaky being coupled to an external reservoir with Ohmic spectral density. We obtain the non-Markovianity characterized by using the probability of the atomic excited state and the negative decoherence rate in the time-local master equation. We also calculate the quantum speed limit time (QSLT) of the evolution process of the atom. The results show that, the atom-cavity coupling is the main physical…
Closed quantum systems exhibit different dynamical regimes, like Many-Body Localization or thermalization, which determine the mechanisms of spread and processing of information. Here we address the impact of these dynamical phases in quantum reservoir computing, an unconventional computing paradigm recently extended into the quantum regime that exploits dynamical systems to solve nonlinear and temporal tasks. We establish that the thermal phase is naturally adapted to the requirements of quantum reservoir computing and report an increased performance at the thermalization transition for the s…
We investigate the dynamical evolution of multipartite entanglement in tripartite systems with three qubits present in independent thermal reservoirs, modelled as infinite set of quantum harmonic oscillators. We show that the presence of temperature gradient between reservoirs play a significant role in robustness of multipartite correlation against environmental decoherence. Considering a bilinear form of interaction Hamiltonian, an exact expression for time evolved density matrix is presented. Interestingly, it is observed that the preservation duration of genuine multipartite concurrence fo…
The dynamics of a three-level atom in a cascade configuration with both transitions coupled to a single structured reservoir of quantized field modes is treated using Laplace transform methods applied to the coupled amplitude equations. Results are also obtained from master equations by two different approaches, that is, involving either pseudomodes or quasimodes. Two different types of reservoir are considered, namely a high-Q cavity and a photonic band-gap system, in which the respective reservoir structure functions involve Lorentzians. Non-resonant transitions are included in the model. In…
We analyze the entropy production and the maximal extractable work from a squeezed thermal reservoir. The nonequilibrium quantum nature of the reservoir induces an entropy transfer with a coherent contribution while modifying its thermal part, allowing work extraction from a single reservoir, as well as great improvements in power and efficiency for quantum heat engines. Introducing a modified quantum Otto cycle, our approach fully characterizes operational regimes forbidden in the standard case, such as refrigeration and work extraction at the same time, accompanied by efficiencies equal to u…
We study a single two-level atom interacting with a reservoir of modes defined by a reservoir structure function with a frequency gap. Using the pseudomodes technique, we derive the main features of a trapping state formed in the weak coupling regime. Utilising different entanglement measures we show that strong correlations and entanglement between the atom and the modes are in existence when this state is formed. Furthermore, an unexpected feature for the reservoir is revealed. In the long time limit and for weak coupling the reservoir spectrum is not constant in time.
We propose a scheme employing quantum-reservoir engineering to controllably entangle the internal states of two atoms trapped in a high finesse optical cavity. Using laser and cavity fields to drive two separate Raman transitions between metastable atomic ground states, a system is realized corresponding to a pair of two-state atoms coupled collectively to a squeezed reservoir. Phase-sensitive reservoir correlations lead to entanglement between the atoms, and, via local unitary transformations and adjustment of the degree and purity of squeezing, one can prepare entangled mixed states with any…
In this work, a mechanism for long time protection of entanglement of a two-qutrit V-type atomic system each of which interacts independently with a dissipative reservoir is investigated. It is shown that the protection process is related exclusively on the formation of bound states in the system-reservoir energy spectrum. It is demonstrated that the degree of boundedness for the system-reservoir bound states is well-controlled by entering other V-type qutrits into the reservoirs, and also through the manipulation of the spontaneously generated interference related to decay channels of the V-t…
We propose a cooling scheme based on depolarisation of a polarised cloud of trapped atoms. Similar to adiabatic demagnetisation, we suggest to use the coupling between the internal spin reservoir of the cloud and the external kinetic reservoir via dipolar relaxation to reduce the temperature of the cloud. By optical pumping one can cool the spin reservoir and force the cooling process. In case of a trapped gas of dipolar chromium atoms, we show that this cooling technique can be performed continuously and used to approach the critical phase space density for BEC
We propose a way to understand the evolution of an open quantum system using a description that dispenses a continuous evolution in time, by discrete operators entangled states, in its most direct and fundamental way. We show that the successive application of these operators in very small time intervals reproduce continuous evolution. It describes and compares the temporal evolution of an open quantum system of three levels, for which the Lindblad equation is solved to obtain the density matrix function of time, a method is developed to find Kraus operators time dependent and also finds const…
Controlled heat transfer and thermal rectification in a system of two coupled cavities connected to thermal reservoirs are discussed. Embedding a dispersively interacting two-level atom in one of the cavities allows switching from a thermally conducting to resisting behavior. By properly tuning the atomic state and system-reservoir parameters, direction of current can be reversed, which violates the second law of thermodynamics. It is shown that a large thermal rectification is achievable in this system by tuning the cavity-reservoir and cavity-atom couplings. Partial recovery of diffusive hea…
We investigate the heat transport between two nonthermal reservoirs based on a microscopic collision model. We consider a bipartite system consisting of two identical subsystems, and each subsystem interacts with its own local reservoir, which consists of a large collection of initially uncorrelated ancillas. Then a heat transport is formed between two reservoirs by a sequence of pairwise collisions (inter-subsystem and subsystem-local reservoir). In this paper we consider two kinds of reservoir's initial states, the thermal state, and the state with coherence whose diagonal elements are the s…
In this paper, we study the quantum self-contained refrigerator [N. Linden, S. Popescu and P. Skrzypczyk, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{105}, 130401 (2010)] in the strong internal coupling regime with engineered reservoirs. We find that if some modes of the three thermal reservoirs can be properly filtered out, the efficiency and the working domain of the refrigerator can be improved in contrast to the those in the weak internal coupling regime, which indicates one advantage of the strong internal coupling. In addition, we find that the background natural vacuum reservoir could cause the filtered r…
The interaction of an atomic two-level system and a squeezed vacuum leads to interesting novel effects in atomic dynamics, including line narrowing in resonance fluorescence and absorption spectra, and a suppressed (enhanced) decay of the in-phase and out-of phase component of the atomic polarization. On the experimental side these predictions have so far eluded observation, essentially due to the difficulty of embedding atoms in a 4 pi squeezed vacuum. In this paper we show how to ``engineer'' a squeezed-bath-type interaction for an effective two-level system. In the simplest example, our two…

We study the dissipative dynamics of neutral atoms in anisotropic harmonic potentials, immersed in a reservoir species that is not trapped by the harmonic potential. Considering initial motional excitation of the atoms along one direction, we explore the resulting spontaneous emission of reservoir excitations, across a range of trap parameters from strong to weak radial confinement. In different limits these processes are useful as a basis for analogies to laser cooling, or as a means to introduce controlled dissipation to many-body dynamics. For realistic experimental parameters, we analyse t…
In the resource theory of thermodynamics, the decrease of the free energy based on von Neumann entropy is not a sufficient condition to determine free evolution. Rather, a whole family of generalised free energies $F_α$ must be monotonically decreasing. We study the resilience of this result to relaxations of the framework. We use a toy collisional model, in which the deviations from the ideal situation can be described as arising from inhomogeneities of local fields or temperatures. For any small amount of perturbation, we find that there exist initial states such that both single-shot and av…
We investigate the quantum dynamics of a moderately driven two-level particle in free space or modified electromagnetic field reservoir. Particularly, we calculate the optical force acting on the radiator in such an environment. We found that the modified environmental reservoir influences significantly the optical force. Very intense driving in free space also modifies the maximal force.
