As is well known, the smallest neutrino mass turns out to be vanishing in the minimal seesaw model, since the effective neutrino mass matrix $M^{}_ν$ is of rank two due to the fact that only two heavy right-handed neutrinos are introduced. In this paper, we point out that the one-loop matching condition for the effective dimension-five neutrino mass operator can make an important contribution to the smallest neutrino mass. By using the available one-loop matching condition and two-loop renormalization group equations in the supersymmetric version of the minimal seesaw model, we explicitly calculate the smallest neutrino mass in the case of normal neutrino mass ordering and find $m^{}_1 \in [10^{-10}, 10^{-8}]~{\rm eV}$ at the Fermi scale $Λ^{}_{\rm F} = 91.2~{\rm GeV}$, where the range of $m^{}_1$ results from the uncertainties on the choice of the seesaw scale $Λ^{}_{\rm SS}$ and on the input values of relevant parameters at $Λ^{}_{\rm SS}$.
We revisit the pair creation constraint on superluminal neutrinos considered by Cohen and Glashow in order to clarify which types of superluminal models are constrained. We show that a model in which the superluminal neutrino is effectively light-like can evade the Cohen-Glashow constraint.
We revise the bounds on heavy sterile neutrinos, especially in the case of their mixing with muon neutrinos in the charged current. We summarize the present experimental limits, and we reanalyze the existing data from the accelerator neutrino experiments and from Super-Kamiokande to set new bounds on a heavy sterile neutrino in the range of masses from 8 MeV to 390 MeV. We also discuss how the future accelerator neutrino experiments can improve the present limits.
The model of the neutrino mass matrix which we proposed in 2000 is revisited in the light of the recent T2K experiments. This model has the special property that it predicts the maximal 2-3 mixing and CP violation under the some simple condition. In this model, if the condition is relaxed, the 2-3 angle and the CP violation deviate from their maximal values and they are related. We present such relations for typical cases.
Radiative corrections to neutrino deep inelastic scattering are revisited. One-loop electroweak corrections are re-calculated within the automatic SANC system. Terms with mass singularities are treated including higher order leading logarithmic corrections. Scheme dependence of corrections due to weak interactions is investigated. The results are implemented into the data analysis of the NOMAD experiment. The present theoretical accuracy in description of the process is discussed.
Prompt neutrino fluxes due to the interactions of high-energy cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere are backgrounds in the search for high-energy neutrinos of galactic or extra-galactic origin performed by Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescopes. We summarize our predictions for prompt neutrinos, showing their basic features as emerging from the calculation in a QCD framework capable of describing recent charm data from the Large Hadron Collider.
We reexamine the role of electron binding effects in the inelastic neutrino-atom scattering induced by the neutrino magnetic moment. The differential cross section of the process is presented as a sum of the longitudinal and transverse components, according to whether the force that the neutrino magnetic moment exerts on electrons is parallel or perpendicular to momentum transfer. The atomic electrons are treated nonrelativistically. On this basis, the recent theoretical predictions concerning the magnetic neutrino-impact ionization of atoms are critically discussed. Numerical calculations are…
We re-derive the renormalization group equation for the effective coupling of the dimension five operator which corresponds to a Majorana mass matrix for the Standard Model neutrinos. We find a result which differs somewhat from earlier calculations, leading to modifications in the evolution of leptonic mixing angles and CP phases. We also present a general method for calculating beta-functions from counterterms in MS-like renormalization schemes, which works for tensorial quantities.
The non-photonic neutrino exchange mechanism of the lepton flavor violating muon-electron conversion in nuclei is revisited. First we determine the nucleon coupling constants for the neutrino exchange mechanism in a relativistic quark model taking into account quark confinement and chiral symmetry requirements. This includes a new, previously overlooked tree-level contribution from neutrino exchange between two quarks in the same nucleon. Then for the case of an additional sterile neutrino we reconsider the coherent mode of this process. The presence of a mixed sterile-active neutrino state he…
We have studied the scenario of baryogenesis via leptogenesis in an $A_4$ flavor symmetric framework considering type I seesaw as the origin of neutrino mass. Because of the presence of the fifth generation right handed neutrino the model naturally generates non-zero reactor mixing angle. We have considered two vev alignments for the extra flavon $η$ and studied the consequences in detail. As a whole the additional flavon along with the extra right handed neutrinos allow us to study thermal leptogenesis by the decay of the lightest right handed neutrino present in the model. We have computed t…
The e- and e+ energy spectra from the SN1987A Supernova neutrino burst interactions are calculated and compared to the observed spectra in Kamiokande-II and IMB experiments. Neutrino oscillations in Supernova and regeneration effects in the Earth, for four combinations of neutrino mass hierarchy (Direct/Inverted) and the value of the mixing angle Theta_13 (Large/Small), are taken into account. The influence of the (anti)neutrino production spectra in Supernova on the observed, in Kamiokande-II and IMB detectors, e-/e+ spectra is shown.
We consider the equilibration of the 'wrong--helicity' Dirac neutrino states $ν_{+}$ and $\overlineν_{-}$ in the early Universe via weak interactions and calculate carefully the thermally averaged production rate, taking into account all the relevant scattering and decay processes. Requiring that the production rate is less than the Hubble parameter at the onset of QCD phase transition so that the nucleosynthesis predictions are not contradicted, we find for $T_{\rm{QCD}}\simeq 200$ MeV the upper limits $m_{ν_τ}\lsim 740$ keV and $m_{ν_μ}\lsim 480$ keV.
A parametrisation of the degenerate neutrino mass matrix obeying $μ-τ$ symmetry, is introduced for detailed numerical analysis. As a continuation of our earlier work on normal and inverted hierarchical models, the present parametrisation for degenerate models has the ability to lower the solar mixing angle below the tri-bimaximal value $\tan^{2}θ_{12}=0.5$, while maintaining the condition of maximal atmospheric mixing angle and zero reactor angle. The combined data on the mass-squared differences derived from various oscillation experiments, and also from the bounds on absolute neutrino masses…
The exchange of two massless neutrinos gives rise to a long range force which couples to weakly charged matter. As has been noted previously in the literature, the potential for this force is $\VN \propto G_{F}^2 / r^5$ with monopole-monople, spin-spin and more complicated interactions. Unfortunately, this is far too small to be observed in present day experiments. We calculate $\VN$ explicitly in the electroweak theory, and show that under very general assumptions forces arising from the exchange of two massless fermions can at best yield $1 / r^5$ potentials.
In this letter we highlight the inherent problems associted with the inverted hierarchical model of neutrinos with only three generations and suggest possible solutions within the MSSM. we discuss the new parametrisation of the solar mixing angle which can identify the light side and dark side of the data. We then argue whether the inverted hierarchical neutrino mass matrix can explain the large mixing angle(LMA) MSW solution of the solar neutrino anomaly in the presence of an appropriate texture of charged lepton mass matrix. In model independent way we explore such specific form of the charg…
We present an on-shell renormalization scheme for the neutralino and chargino mass matrices for two R-parity violating models, namely bilinear R-parity violation and the munuSSM with one right-handed neutrino superfield. We discuss in both models how to obtain neutrino masses and mixing angles correctly as well as differences to the existing DRbar calculations. Both models predict correlations between neutrino mixing angles and ratios of R-parity violating decays such as neutralino_1 -> l W which can be tested for example at the LHC. We point out that there are cases where one has to include t…
We consider models where one Majorana neutrino is massless at tree level (like the see saw with two right-handed neutrinos), and compute the contribution to its mass m generated by two-loop quantum corrections. The result is m \sim 10^{-13}eV in the SM and m \sim 10^{-10} eV (tanBeta/10)^4 in the MSSM, compatible with the restricted range suggested by Affleck-Dine baryogenesis.
Averaged neutrino masses defined by $\la m_ν\ra_{ab} \equiv\left| \sum_{j=1}^{3}U_{aj}U_{bj}m_j\right|$ ($a,b=e,μ,τ$) are reanalyzed using up-to-date observed MNS parameters and neutrino masses by the neutrino oscillation experiments together with the cosmological constraint on neutrino masses. The values of $\la m_ν\ra_{ab}$ are model-independently evaluated in terms of effective neutrino mass defined by $\overline{m_ν}\equiv\left(\sum |U_{ej}|^2m_j^2\right)^{1/2}$ which is observable in the single beta decay. We obtain lower bound for $\langle m_ν\rangle_{ee}$ in the inverted hierarchy(IH) c…
The prospects for producing leptoquarks (LQs) in ultrahigh-energy (UHE) neutrino nucleon collisions are re-examined in the light of recent interpretations of HERA data in terms of leptoquark production. We update predictions for cross-sections for the production of first- and second-generation leptoquarks in UHE nu-N and nubar-N collisions including (i) recent experimental limits on masses and couplings from the LEP and TEVATRON colliders as well as rare processes, (ii) modern parton distributions, and (iii) radiative corrections to single leptoquark production. If the HERA events are due to a…
The one-loop QED and electroweak radiative corrections to neutrino-deuteron scattering induced by the neutral current are reexamined, paying a particular attention to the constant term which has never been treated properly in literature. This problem is closely related to the definition of the axial-vector coupling constant $g_{A}$ and requires thorough calculations of the constant terms in the charged current processes, too. We find that the radiative corrections to the neutral current induced reactions amount to 1.7 (1.5) per cent enhancement, if the Higgs boson mass is $m_{H}=1.5 \: m_{Z} (…
We revisit leptogenesis in the minimal non-supersymmetric type I see-saw mechanism with two right-handed (RH) neutrinos, including flavour effects and allowing both RH neutrinos N_1 and N_2 to contribute, rather than just the lightest RH neutrino N_1 that has hitherto been considered. By performing scans over parameter space in terms of the single complex angle z of the orthogonal matrix R, for a range of PMNS parameters, we find that in regions around z \sim \pm π/2, for the case of a normal mass hierarchy, the N_2 contribution can dominate the contribution to leptogenesis, allowing the light…
We calculate the energy--momentum distribution of the charmed quarks produced in neutrino reactions on protons, quantifying the importance of mass and current non--conservation effects. We study the strange and charm distributions probed in neutrino interactions in the presently accessible kinematical region. Some ambiguities inherent to the extraction of the parton densities from dimuon data are pointed out.
We calculate the momentum given to a proto neutron star during the first 10 seconds after temperature equilibrium is reached, using recent evidence of sterile neutrinos and a measurement of the mixing angle. This is a continuation of an earlier estimate with a wide range of possible mixing angles. Using the new mixing angle we find that sterile neutrinos can account for the observed pulsar velocities.
In this paper we investigate neutrino oscillations with altered dispersion relations in the presence of sterile neutrinos. Modified dispersion relations represent an agnostic way to parameterize new physics. Models of this type have been suggested to explain global neutrino oscillation data, including deviations from the standard three-neutrino paradigm as observed by a few experiments. We show that, unfortunately, in this type of models new tensions arise turning them incompatible with global data.
We summarize our recent paper on neutrino oscillation probabilities in matter, explaining the importance, relevance and need for simple, highly accurate approximations to the neutrino oscillation probabilities in matter. Simple expressions for the neutrino mixing angles and mass squared differences in matter are given in an Appendix. Using these in the vacuum oscillation probabilities instead of the vacuum values, gives an excellent approximation to the oscillation probabilities in matter.
Many GUT models conserve the difference between the baryon and lepton number, $B-L$. These models can create baryon and lepton asymmetries from heavy Higgs or gauge boson decays with $B+L \neq 0$ but with $B-L=0$. Since the sphaleron processes violate $B+L$, such GUT-generated asymmetries will finally be washed out completely, making GUT baryogenesis scenarios incapable of reproducing the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In this work, we revisit the idea to revive GUT baryogenesis, proposed by Fukugita and Yanagida, where right-handed neutrinos erase the lepton asymmetry before the s…
We revisit the effect of the (Dirac) CP-violating phase on neutrino lepton number asymmetries in both mass- and flavor-basis. We found that, even if there are sizable effects on muon- and tau-neutrino asymmetries, the effect on the asymmetry of electron-neutrinos is at most similar to the upper bound set by BBN for initial neutrino degeneracy parameters smaller than order unity. We also found that, for the asymmetries in mass-basis, the changes caused by CP-violation is of sub-\% level which is unlikely to be accesible neither in the current nor in the forthcoming experiments.
The phenomenology of massive neutrinos -- flavour mixing in the lepton sector causing oscillations between different neutrino-types along their propagation over macroscopic distances in vacuum -- aims at relating observable quantities (oscillation frequency or, equivalently, oscillation length) to the neutrino properties: mixing angles $θ_{ij}$ and mass-squared differences $Δm_{ij}^2$. Calculation of the probabilities for a given neutrino-type either to survive or to mutate into another type, as functions of momentum $p$ and travelling distance $L$, are properly based on wave-packet models of …
We re-analyze charged lepton corrections to neutrino mixing angles and CP phases, carefully including CP phases from the charged lepton sector. We present simple analytical formulae for including the charged lepton corrections and derive compact new results for small neutrino and charged lepton mixings $θ^ν_{13}$ and $θ^{e}_{13}$. We find a generic relation $θ_{12} + \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} θ^{e}_{12} \cos(δ- π) \approx θ^ν_{12}$, which relates the prediction from the neutrino sector $θ^ν_{12}$ to the charged lepton mixing $θ^{e}_{12}$ and to the MNS neutrino oscillation phase $δ$. We apply our for…
In the simplest potentially realistic renormalizable variants of the flipped $SU(5)$ unified model the right-handed neutrino masses are conveniently generated by means of the Witten's two-loop mechanism. As a consequence, the compactness of the underlying scalar sector provides strong correlations between the low-energy flavor observables such as neutrino masses and mixing and the flavor structure of the fermionic currents governing the baryon and lepton number violating nucleon decays. In this study, the associated two-loop Feynman integrals are fully evaluated and, subsequently, are used to …
The extension of Majorana neutrino mass mechanism of the neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) with the inclusion of right-handed leptonic and hadronic currents is revisited. While only the exchange of light neutrinos is assumed, the $s_{1/2}$ and $p_{1/2}$-states of emitted electrons as well as recoil corrections to the nucleon currents are taken into account. Within the standard approximations the decay rate is factorized into a sum of products of kinematical phase-space factors, nuclear matrix elements and the fundamental parameters that characterize the lepton number violation. Unlike in…
With a minimally modified dispersion relation for neutrinos, we reconsider the constraints on superluminal neutrino velocities from bremsstrahlung effects in the laboratory frame. Employing both the direct calculation approach and the virtual Z-boson approach, we obtain the generic decay width and energy loss rate of a superluminal neutrino with general energy. The Cohen-Glashow's analytical results for neutrinos with a relatively low energy are confirmed in both approaches. We employ the survival probability instead of the terminal energy to assess whether a neutrino with a given energy is ob…
At temperatures less than a few MeV, the efficiency of the neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung from nucleons interracting with the condensed pion field is much less than previously estimated by other authors. The physical reason for this is a periodic structure of the developed pion condensate. The repeated interactions of a nucleon with the periodic pion field modify the nucleon spectrum, which is split into two bands. The energy gap between the bands is about a few MeV or larger, even if the amplitude of the pion field is small compared with the pion mass.
A few years ago, it had been shown that effects stemming from renormalisation group running can be quite large in the scotogenic model, where neutrinos obtain their mass only via a 1-loop diagram (or, more generally, in many models in which the light neutrino mass is generated via quantum corrections at loop-level). We present a new computation of the renormalisation group equations (RGEs) for the scotogenic model, thereby updating previous results. We discuss the matching in detail, in particular in what regards the different mass spectra possible for the new particles involved. We furthermor…
We revisit the process of inverse neutrino-less double beta decay (e e -> W W) at future linear colliders. The cases of Majorana neutrino and Higgs triplet exchange are considered. We also discuss the processes e mu -> W W and mu mu -> W W, which are motivated by the possibility of muon colliders. For heavy neutrino exchange and center-of-mass energies larger than 1 TeV, we show that masses up to 10^6 (10^5) GeV could be probed for e-e and e-mu machines, respectively. The stringent limits for mixing of heavy neutrinos with muons render mu mu -> W W less promising, even though this process is n…
We study the electroweak vacuum stability in Type I seesaw models for 3 generations of neutrinos in scenarios where the right-handed neutrinos have explicit bare mass terms in the Lagrangian and where these are dynamically generated through the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking. To best highlight the difference of the two cases we concentrate on the absolute stability of the scalar potential. We observe that for the first scenario, the scale at which the scalar potential becomes unstable is lower from that within the Standard Model. In addition the Yukawa couplings $\mathbf{Y}_ν$ are …
We study the decoupling process of neutrinos in the early universe in the presence of three-flavour oscillations. The evolution of the neutrino spectra is found by solving the corresponding momentum-dependent kinetic equations for the neutrino density matrix, including for the first time the proper collision integrals for both diagonal and off-diagonal elements. This improved calculation modifies the evolution of the off-diagonal elements of the neutrino density matrix and changes the deviation from equilibrium of the frozen neutrino spectra. However, it does not vary the contribution of neutr…
All pieces of concrete evidence for phenomena outside the standard model (SM) - neutrino masses and dark matter - are consistent with the existence of new degrees of freedom that interact very weakly, if at all, with those in the SM. We propose that these new degrees of freedom organize themselves into a simple dark sector, a chiral SU(3) x SU(2) gauge theory with the smallest nontrivial fermion content. Similar to the SM, the dark SU(2) is spontaneously broken while the dark SU(3) confines at low energies. At the renormalizable level, the dark sector contains massless fermions - dark leptons …
We update predictions for lepton fluxes from the hadroproduction of charm quarks in the scattering of primary cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere. The calculation of charm-pair hadroproduction applies the latest results from perturbative QCD through next-to-next-to-leading order and modern parton distributions, together with estimates on various sources of uncertainties. Our predictions for the lepton fluxes turn out to be compatible, within the uncertainty band, with recent results in the literature. However, by taking into account contributions neglected in previous works, our total unce…
Following the recent results from Daya Bay and RENO, which measure the lepton mixing angle theta^l_13 ~ 0.15, we revisit a supersymmetric S4 x SU(5) model, which predicts tri-bimaximal (TB) mixing in the neutrino sector with theta^l_13 being too small in its original version. We show that introducing one additional S4 singlet flavon into the model gives rise to a sizable theta^l_13 via an operator which leads to the breaking of one of the two Z2 symmetries preserved in the neutrino sector at leading order. The results of the original model for fermion masses, quark mixing and the solar mixing …
We show that a left-handed neutrino $ν_L$ can oscillate into its $CP$- conjugated state $\barν_R$ with maximal amplitude, in direct analogy with $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ oscillations. Peculiarities of such oscillations under different conditions are studied.
The ILL experiment, one of the "reactor anomaly" experiments, is re-examined. ILL's baseline of 8.78 m is the shortest of the short baseline experiments, and it is the experiment that finds the largest fraction of the electron anti-neutrinos disappearing -- over 20%. Previous analyses, if they do not ignore the ILL experiment, use functional forms for chisquare which are either totally new and unjustified, are the magnitude chi-square (also termed a "rate analysis"), or utilize a spectral form for chi-square which double counts the systematic error. We do an analysis which utilizes the standar…
We have reviewed the current status of the inclusive neutrino scattering from $^{12}$C in the low energy region corresponding to the neutrino beams from the pion, muon and kaon decaying at rest. The theoretical calculations of total cross sections in various nuclear models with special emphasis on the recent experiments with the monoenergetic neutrinos from KDAR [1] along with the older experiments from KARMEN and LSND collaborations have been discussed in the context of the recent works by Akbar et al. [2] and Nikolakopoulos et al. [3]. The inadequacy of the various theoretical models used to…
The gallium anomaly, i.e. the missing electron-neutrino flux from $^{37}$Ar and $^{51}$Cr electron-capture decays as measured by the GALLEX and SAGE solar-neutrino detectors, has been among us already for about two decades. We present here a new estimate of the significance of this anomaly based on cross-section calculations using nuclear shell-model wave functions obtained by exploiting recently developed two-nucleon interactions. The gallium anomaly of the GALLEX and SAGE experiments is found to be smaller than that obtained in previous evaluations, decreasing the significance from 3.0$σ$ to…
If neutrinos are a significant contributor to the matter density of the universe, then they should have $\sim$ eV mass and cluster in galactic (super) cluster halos, and possibly in galactic halos as well. It was noted in the early 1980's that cosmic ray neutrinos with energy within $δE/E_R=Γ_Z/M_Z \sim 3%$ of the peak energy $E_R=4 (eV/m_ν)\times 10^{21}$ eV will annihilate on the nonrelativistic relic antineutrinos (and vice versa) to produce the Z-boson with an enhanced, resonant cross section of ${\cal O}(G_F)\sim 10^{-32}{cm}^2$. The result of the resonant neutrino annihilation is a hadro…
In the light of refined and large reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$, we have revisited the texture three and two zero neutrino mass matrices in the flavor basis. For Majorana neutrinos, it has been explicitly shown that all the texture three zero mass matrices remain ruled out. Further, for both normal and inverted mass ordering, for the texture two zero neutrino mass matrices one finds interesting constraints on the Dirac-like CP violating phase $δ$ and Majorana phases $ρ$ and $σ$.
Adding a scalar triplet to the Standard Model is one of the simplest ways of giving mass to neutrinos, providing at the same time a mechanism to stabilize the theory's vacuum. In this paper, we revisit these aspects of the type-II seesaw model pointing out that the bounded-from-below conditions for the scalar potential in use in the literature are not correct. We discuss some scenarios where the correction can be significant and sketch the typical scalar boson profile expected by consistency.
We show that the type-I seesaw, responsible for generating the light neutrino mass, itself is capable of accommodating one of the three right handed neutrinos as a freeze-in type of dark matter (DM) where the required smallness of the associated coupling is connected to the lightness of the (smallest) active neutrino mass. It turns out that (a) the non-thermal production of DM having mass $\lesssim \mathcal{O}(1)$ MeV (via decays of $W, Z$ bosons and SM Higgs) consistent with relic density as well as (b) its stability determine this smallest active neutrino mass uniquely $\sim {\mathcal{O}}(10…
Invisible neutrino decay modes are difficult to target at laboratory experiments, and current bounds on such decays from solar neutrino and neutrino oscillation experiments are somewhat weak. It has been known for some time that Cosmology can serve as a powerful probe of invisible neutrino decays. In this work, we show that in order for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis to be successful, the invisible neutrino decay lifetime is bounded to be $τ_ν> 10^{-3}\,\text{s}$ at 95\% CL. We revisit Cosmic Microwave Background constraints on invisible neutrino decays, and by using Planck2018 observations we find …
We update previous analyses of the Zee-Babu model in the light of new data, e.g., the mixing angle $θ_{13}$, the rare decay $μ\to e γ$ and the LHC results. We also analyse the possibility of accommodating the deviations in $Γ(H\to γγ)$ hinted by the LHC experiments, and the stability of the scalar potential. We find that neutrino oscillation data and low energy constraints are still compatible with masses of the extra charged scalars accessible to LHC. Moreover, if any of them is discovered, the model can be falsified by combining the information on the singly and doubly charged scalar decay m…
Given a massless neutrino at a superhigh energy scale $Λ$ (e.g., in the minimal seesaw model with only two heavy Majorana neutrinos), we calculate quantum corrections to its initially vanishing mass $m^{}_1$ (or $m^{}_3$) and the associated Majorana CP phase $ρ$ (or $\varrho$) at the Fermi scale $Λ^{}_{\rm F}$ by means of the two-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) in the standard model and with the help of the latest neutrino oscillation data. The numerical results obtained from our analytical approximations are in good agreement with those achieved by numerically solving the two-loop…
A new scheme to determine the neutrino mass matrix is proposed using atomic de-excitation between two states of a few eV energy spacing. The determination of the smallest neutrino mass of the order of 1 meV and neutrino mass type, Majorana or Dirac, becomes possible, if one can coherently excite more than 1 gram of atoms using two lasers.
The energetic balance of the Standard Solar Model (SSM) results from an equilibrium between nuclear energy production, energy transfer, and photospheric emission. In this letter, we derive an order of magnitude of several % for the loss of energy in kinetic energy, magnetic energy, and X or UV radiation during the whole solar lifetime from the observations of the present Sun. We also estimate the mass loss from the observations of young solar analogs which could reach up to 30% of the current mass. We deduce new models of the present Sun, their associated neutrino fluxes, and their internal so…
