Video-text retrieval plays an essential role in multi-modal research and has been widely used in many real-world web applications. The CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training), an image-language pre-training model, has demonstrated the power of visual concepts learning from web collected image-text datasets. In this paper, we propose a CLIP4Clip model to transfer the knowledge of the CLIP model to video-language retrieval in an end-to-end manner. Several questions are investigated via empirical studies: 1) Whether image feature is enough for video-text retrieval? 2) How a post-pretraining on a large-scale video-text dataset based on the CLIP affect the performance? 3) What is the practical mechanism to model temporal dependency between video frames? And 4) The Hyper-parameters sensitivity of the model on video-text retrieval task. Extensive experimental results present that the CLIP4Clip model transferred from the CLIP can achieve SOTA results on various video-text retrieval datasets, including MSR-VTT, MSVC, LSMDC, ActivityNet, and DiDeMo. We release our code at https://github.com/ArrowLuo/CLIP4Clip.
We present CLIP2Video network to transfer the image-language pre-training model to video-text retrieval in an end-to-end manner. Leading approaches in the domain of video-and-language learning try to distill the spatio-temporal video features and multi-modal interaction between videos and languages from a large-scale video-text dataset. Different from them, we leverage pretrained image-language model, simplify it as a two-stage framework with co-learning of image-text and enhancing temporal relations between video frames and video-text respectively, make it able to train on comparatively small…

Our goal in this paper is the adaptation of image-text models for long video retrieval. Recent works have demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in video retrieval by adopting CLIP, effectively hitchhiking on the image-text representation for video tasks. However, there has been limited success in learning temporal aggregation that outperform mean-pooling the image-level representations extracted per frame by CLIP. We find that the simple yet effective baseline of weighted-mean of frame embeddings via query-scoring is a significant improvement above all prior temporal modelling attempts and…

We address the problem of text-based activity retrieval in video. Given a sentence describing an activity, our task is to retrieve matching clips from an untrimmed video. To capture the inherent structures present in both text and video, we introduce a multilevel model that integrates vision and language features earlier and more tightly than prior work. First, we inject text features early on when generating clip proposals, to help eliminate unlikely clips and thus speed up processing and boost performance. Second, to learn a fine-grained similarity metric for retrieval, we use visual feature…

In this paper, we re-examine the task of cross-modal clip-sentence retrieval, where the clip is part of a longer untrimmed video. When the clip is short or visually ambiguous, knowledge of its local temporal context (i.e. surrounding video segments) can be used to improve the retrieval performance. We propose Context Transformer (ConTra); an encoder architecture that models the interaction between a video clip and its local temporal context in order to enhance its embedded representations. Importantly, we supervise the context transformer using contrastive losses in the cross-modal embedding s…

Video Retrieval is a challenging task where a text query is matched to a video or vice versa. Most of the existing approaches for addressing such a problem rely on annotations made by the users. Although simple, this approach is not always feasible in practice. In this work, we explore the application of the language-image model, CLIP, to obtain video representations without the need for said annotations. This model was explicitly trained to learn a common space where images and text can be compared. Using various techniques described in this document, we extended its application to videos, ob…
Motivated by the increasing need of saving search effort by obtaining relevant video clips instead of whole videos, we propose a new task, named Semantic Video Moments Retrieval at scale (SVMR), which aims at finding relevant videos coupled with re-localizing the video clips in them. Instead of a simple combination of video retrieval and video re-localization, our task is more challenging because of several essential aspects. In the 1st stage, our SVMR should take into account the fact that: 1) a positive candidate long video can contain plenty of irrelevant clips which are also semantically m…
Modern video-text retrieval frameworks basically consist of three parts: video encoder, text encoder and the similarity head. With the success on both visual and textual representation learning, transformer based encoders and fusion methods have also been adopted in the field of video-text retrieval. In this report, we present CLIP2TV, aiming at exploring where the critical elements lie in transformer based methods. To achieve this, We first revisit some recent works on multi-modal learning, then introduce some techniques into video-text retrieval, finally evaluate them through extensive exper…
Video-text retrieval has been a crucial and fundamental task in multi-modal research. The development of video-text retrieval has been considerably promoted by large-scale multi-modal contrastive pre-training, which primarily focuses on coarse-grained or fine-grained contrast. However, cross-grained contrast, which is the contrast between coarse-grained representations and fine-grained representations, has rarely been explored in prior research. Compared with fine-grained or coarse-grained contrasts, cross-grained contrast calculate the correlation between coarse-grained features and each fine…

The Google Universal Image Embedding (GUIE) Challenge is one of the first competitions in multi-domain image representations in the wild, covering a wide distribution of objects: landmarks, artwork, food, etc. This is a fundamental computer vision problem with notable applications in image retrieval, search engines and e-commerce. In this work, we explain our 4th place solution to the GUIE Challenge, and our "bag of tricks" to fine-tune zero-shot Vision Transformers (ViT) pre-trained using CLIP.

Text-Video Retrieval plays an important role in multi-modal understanding and has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Most existing methods focus on constructing contrastive pairs between whole videos and complete caption sentences, while overlooking fine-grained cross-modal relationships, e.g., clip-phrase or frame-word. In this paper, we propose a novel method, named Hierarchical Cross-Modal Interaction (HCMI), to explore multi-level cross-modal relationships among video-sentence, clip-phrase, and frame-word for text-video retrieval. Considering intrinsic semantic frame relations…
Content-based multimedia information retrieval is an interesting research area since it allows retrieval based on inherent characteristic of multimedia objects. For example retrieval based on visual characteristics such as colour, shapes or textures of objects in images or retrieval based on spatial relationships among objects in the media (images or video clips). This paper reviews some work done in image and video retrieval and then proposes an integrated model that can handle images and video clips uniformly. Using this model retrieval on images or video clips can be done based on the same …

In this paper, we leverage CLIP for zero-shot sketch based image retrieval (ZS-SBIR). We are largely inspired by recent advances on foundation models and the unparalleled generalisation ability they seem to offer, but for the first time tailor it to benefit the sketch community. We put forward novel designs on how best to achieve this synergy, for both the category setting and the fine-grained setting ("all"). At the very core of our solution is a prompt learning setup. First we show just via factoring in sketch-specific prompts, we already have a category-level ZS-SBIR system that overshoots …
