We present a new study of remnant black hole properties from 13 binary black hole systems, numerically evolved using the Spectral Einstein Code. The mass, spin, and recoil velocity of each remnant were determined quasi-locally from apparent horizon data and asymptotically from Bondi data $(h, ψ_4, ψ_3, ψ_2, ψ_1)$ computed at future null infinity using SpECTRE's Cauchy characteristic evolution. We compare these independent measurements of the remnant properties in the bulk and on the boundary of the spacetime, giving insight into how well asymptotic data are able to reproduce local properties of the remnant black hole in numerical relativity. We also discuss the theoretical framework for connecting horizon quantities to asymptotic quantities and how it relates to our results. This study recommends a simple improvement to the recoil velocities reported in the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes waveform catalog, provides an improvement to future surrogate remnant models, and offers new analysis techniques for evaluating the physical accuracy of numerical simulations.
During binary black hole (BBH) mergers, energy and momenta are carried away from the binary system as gravitational radiation. Access to the radiated energy and momenta allows us to predict the properties of the remnant black hole. We develop a Python package gw_remnant to compute the remnant mass, remnant spin, peak luminosity, and the final kick imparted on the remnant black hole from the gravitational radiation. Using this package, we compute the remnant properties of the final black hole in case of non-spinning BBH mergers with mass ratios ranging from q=2.5 to q=1000 using waveform modes …
Recent work on improved efficiency of calculations for extreme mass ratio inspirals has produced the useful byproduct of comparisons of inspirals of comparable mass by particle perturbation (PP) methods and by numerical relativty (NR). Here we point out: (1) In choosing the rescaling of the masses, consideration must be given to the differences in the PP and NR methods even in the earliest, least nonlinear regime; in particular barycenter effects must be addressed. (2) Care must be given to the comparison of the nonspinning remnant in PP and the rapidly spinning remnant in NR.
We present a systematic numerical-relativity study of the dynamical ejecta, winds and nucleosynthesis in neutron star merger remnants. Binaries with the chirp mass compatible with GW170817, different mass ratios, and five microphysical equations of state (EOS) are simulated with an approximate neutrino transport and a subgrid model for magnetohydrodynamics turbulence up to 100 milliseconds postmerger. Spiral density waves propagating from the neutron star remnant to the disk trigger a wind with mass flux ${\sim}0.1{-}0.5\,{\rm M_\odot/s}$ persisting for the entire simulation as long as the rem…
Gravitational waves have been detected from the inspiral of a binary neutron-star, GW170817, which allowed constraints to be placed on the neutron star equation of state. The equation of state can be further constrained if gravitational waves from a post-merger remnant are detected. Post-merger waveforms are currently generated by numerical-relativity simulations, which are computationally expensive. Here we introduce a hierarchical model trained on numerical-relativity simulations, which can generate reliable post-merger spectra in a fraction of a second. Our spectra have mean fitting factors…
We analyze the properties of the gravitational wave signal emitted after the merger of a binary neutron star system when the remnant survives for more than a 80 ms (and up to 140ms). We employ four different piecewise polytropic equations of state supplemented by an ideal fluid thermal component. We find that the post-merger phase can be subdivided into three phases: an early post-merger phase (where the quadrupole mode and a few subdominant features are active), the intermediate post-merger phase (where only the quadrupole mode is active) and the late post-merger phase (where convective insta…
We have evolved mergers of equal-mass binary quark stars, the total mass of which is close to the mass shedding limit of uniformly rotating configurations, in fully general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations, aimed at investigating the post-merger outcomes. In particular, we have identified the threshold mass for prompt black hole formation after the merger, by tracing the minimum lapse function as well as the amount of ejected material during the merger simulation. A semi-analytical investigation based on the angular momentum contained in the merger remnant is also performed to verify the …
Multiple approaches are required to study the evolution of black-hole binaries. While the post-Newtonian approximation is sufficient to describe the early inspiral (even from infinitely large orbital separation), only numerical relativity can capture the full complexity of the dynamics near merger. We combine multi-timescale post-Newtonian integrations with numerical-relativity surrogate models, thus mapping the entire history of the binary from its asymptotic configuration at past-time infinity to the post-merger remnant. This approach naturally allows us to assess the impact of the precessio…
High-energy interactions of charged black holes in full general relativity II: Near-extremal merger remnants and universality with the irreducible mass
Alexia Auffèves and Philippe Grangier proposed to modify the quantum ontology by requiring that physical properties are attributed jointly to the system and to the context in which it is embedded. Comparing the formal structures of Quantum Theory and of Special Relativity may suggest a basis for such an interpretation of quantum theory.
We develop new strategies to build numerical relativity surrogate models for eccentric binary black hole systems, which are expected to play an increasingly important role in current and future gravitational-wave detectors. We introduce a new surrogate waveform model, \texttt{NRSur2dq1Ecc}, using 47 nonspinning, equal-mass waveforms with eccentricities up to $0.2$ when measured at a reference time of $5500M$ before merger. This is the first waveform model that is directly trained on eccentric numerical relativity simulations and does not require that the binary circularizes before merger. The …
The gravitational radiation from the ringdown of a binary black hole merger is described by the solution of the Teukolsky equation, which predicts both the temporal dependence and the angular distribution of the emission. Many studies have explored the temporal feature of the ringdown wave through black hole spectroscopy. In this work, we further study the spatial distribution, by introducing a global fitting procedure over both temporal and spatial dependences, to propose a more complete test of General Relativity. We show that spin-weighted spheroidal harmonics are the better representation …
Ringdown gravitational waves of compact object binaries observed by ground-based gravitational-wave detectors encapsulate rich information to understand remnant objects after the merger and to test general relativity in the strong field. In this work, we investigate the ringdown gravitational waves in detail to better understand their property, assuming that the remnant objects are black holes. For this purpose, we perform numerical simulations of post-merger phase of binary black holes by using the black hole perturbation scheme with the initial data given under the close-limit approximation,…
In the context of testing general relativity with gravitational waves, constraints obtained with multiple events are typically combined either through a hierarchical formalism or though a combined multiplicative Bayes factor. We show that the well-known dependence of Bayes factors on the analysis priors in regions of the parameter space without likelihood support can lead to strong confidence in favor of incorrect conclusions when one employs the multiplicative Bayes factor. Bayes factors $\mathcal{O}(1)$ are ambivalent as they depend sensitively on the analysis priors, which are rarely set in…
We present the first systematic comparison between gravitational waveforms emitted by inspiralling, quasi-circular and nonspinning black hole binaries computed with three different approaches: second-order gravitational self-force (2GSF) theory, as implemented in the 1PAT1 model; numerical relativity (NR), as implemented by the SXS collaboration; and the effective one body (EOB) formalism, as implemented in the TEOBResumS waveform model. To compare the models we use both a standard, time-domain waveform alignment and a gauge-invariant analysis based on the dimensionless function $Q_ω(ω)\equiv …
We discuss equivalent representations of gravity in the framework of metric-affine geometries pointing out basic concepts from where these theories stem out. In particular, we take into account tetrads and spin connection to describe the so called {\it Geometric Trinity of Gravity}. Specifically, we consider General Relativity, constructed upon the metric tensor and based on the curvature $R$; Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity, formulated in terms of torsion $T$ and relying on tetrads and spin connection; Symmetric Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity, built up on non-metr…

We describe a method of implementing the axisymmetric evolution of general-relativistic hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics through modification of a multipatch grid scheme. In order to ease the computational requirements required to evolve the post-merger phase of systems involving binary compact massive objects in numerical relativity, it is often beneficial to take advantage of these system's tendency to rapidly settle into states that are nearly axisymmetric, allowing for 2D evolution of secular timescales. We implement this scheme in the spectral Einstein code and show the results of a…
We produce the first numerical relativity binary black hole gravitational waveforms in a higher-curvature theory beyond general relativity. In particular, we study head-on collisions of binary black holes in order-reduced dynamical Chern-Simons gravity. This is a precursor to producing beyond-general-relativity waveforms for inspiraling binary black hole systems that are useful for gravitational wave detection. Head-on collisions are interesting in their own right, however, as they cleanly probe the quasi-normal mode spectrum of the final black hole. We thus compute the leading-order dynamical…
Observations of gravitational waves and their electromagnetic counterparts may soon uncover the existence of coalescing compact binary systems formed by a stellar-mass black hole and a neutron star. These mergers result in a remnant black hole, possibly surrounded by an accretion disk. The mass and spin of the remnant black hole depend on the properties of the coalescing binary. We construct a map from the binary components to the remnant black hole using a sample of numerical-relativity simulations of different mass ratios $q$, (anti-)aligned dimensionless spins of the black hole $a_{\rm BH}$…

The modelling of unequal mass binary black hole systems is of high importance to detect and estimate parameters from these systems. Numerical relativity (NR) is well suited to study systems with comparable component masses, $m_1\sim m_2$, whereas small mass ratio (SMR) perturbation theory applies to binaries where $q=m_2/m_1<< 1$. This work investigates the applicability for NR and SMR as a function of mass ratio for eccentric non-spinning binary black holes. We produce $52$ NR simulations with mass ratios between $1:10$ and $1:1$ and initial eccentricities up to $0.7$. From these we extract q…
The problem of the event horizon in relativistic gravity is discussed. Singular solutions in general relativity are well known. The Schwarschild metric of a spherical mass is singular at zero ($r = 0$) and at the event horizon ($r = r_g$). Both features reflect the existence of the phenomenon of collapse in general relativity for compact masses exceeding $3M_{\odot }$. A material particle crossing the event horizon falls into a central singularity according to the classical theory of general relativity. In the quantum theory of gravity, there may be no central singularity. The physics of the e…
We present accurate fits for the remnant properties of generically precessing binary black holes, trained on large banks of numerical-relativity simulations. We use Gaussian process regression to interpolate the remnant mass, spin, and recoil velocity in the 7-dimensional parameter space of precessing black-hole binaries with mass ratios $q\leq2$, and spin magnitudes $χ_1,χ_2\leq0.8$. For precessing systems, our errors in estimating the remnant mass, spin magnitude, and kick magnitude are lower than those of existing fitting formulae by at least an order of magnitude (improvement is also repor…
Only numerical relativity simulations can capture the full complexities of binary black hole mergers. These simulations, however, are prohibitively expensive for direct data analysis applications such as parameter estimation. We present two new fast and accurate surrogate models for the outputs of these simulations: the first model, NRSur7dq4, predicts the gravitational waveform and the second model, \RemnantModel, predicts the properties of the remnant black hole. These models extend previous 7-dimensional, non-eccentric precessing models to higher mass ratios, and have been trained against 1…
It is possible to infer the mass and spin of the remnant black hole from binary black hole mergers by comparing the ringdown gravitational wave signal to results from studies of perturbed Kerr spacetimes. Typically these studies are based on the fundamental quasinormal mode of the dominant $\ell=m=2$ harmonic. By modeling the ringdown of accurate numerical relativity simulations, we find that the fundamental mode alone is insufficient to recover the true underlying mass and spin, unless the analysis is started very late in the ringdown. Including higher overtones associated with this $\ell=m=2…
