We study the role of entanglement and non-locality in quantum protocols that make use of systems of identical particles. Unlike in the case of distinguishable particles, the notions of entanglement and non-locality for systems whose constituents cannot be distinguished and singly addressed are still debated. We clarify why the only approach that avoids incongruities and paradoxes is the one based on the second quantization formalism whereby it is the entanglement of the modes that can be populated by the particles what really matters and not the particles themselves. Indeed, by means of a metrological and of a teleportation protocol, we show that inconsistencies arise in formulations that force entanglement and non-locality to be properties of the identical particles rather than of the modes they can occupy. The reason resides in the fact that orthogonal modes can always be addressed while identical particles can not.
This work provides a comprehensive approach to analyze the entanglement between subsystems generated by identical particles, based on the symmetric/exterior algebra (SEA) and microcausality. Our method amends the no-labeling approach (NLA) to quantify any type of identical particles' entanglement, especially fermions with the parity superselection rule. We can analyze the non-local properties of identical particles' states in a fundamentally equivalent way to those for non-identical particles, which is achieved by the factorizability of the total Hilbert space of identical particles. This form…
We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the dynamics of entanglement and non-locality for two qubits immersed in a global pure dephasing environment. We demonstrate the existence of a class of states for which entanglement is forever frozen during the dynamics, even if the state of the system does evolve. At the same time non-local correlations, quantified by the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, either undergo sudden death or are trapped during the dynamics.

A unified formalism was developed in [S. Adhikary et. al., arXiv:1710.04371 [quant-ph]], for describing non-classicality of states by introducing pseudo projection operators in which both quantum logic and quantum probability are naturally embedded. In this paper we show, as the first practical application, how non-locality and entanglement emerge as two such important manifestations. It provides a perspective complementary to (i) the understanding of them that we have currently (in terms of LHV models) and (ii) to the algebraic approaches employed. The work also makes it possible to obtain, i…
Non-classical probability is the underlying feature of quantum mechanics. The emergence of Bell-CHSH non-locality for bipartite systems and linear entanglement inequalities for two-qubit systems has been shown in Adhikary et al. 2020 [Eur. Phys. J. D 74, 68 (2020)], purely as violations of classical probability rules. In this paper, we improve upon that work by showing that violation of any nonlocality inequality implies violation of classical probability rules, manifested through negative probabilities, without recourse to any underlying theory. Moving on to entanglement, we employ parent pse…
Entanglement breaking channels play a significant role in quantum information theory. In this work we investigate qubit channels through their property of `non-locality breaking', defined in a natural way but within the purview of CHSH nonlocality. This also provides a different perspective on the relationship between entanglement and nonlocality through the dual picture of quantum channels instead of through states. For a channel to be entanglement breaking it is sufficient to `break' the entanglement of maximally entangled states. We provide examples to show that for CHSH nonlocality breakin…
Entangling quantum systems with different characteristics through the exchange of photons is a prerequisite for building future quantum networks. Proving the presence of entanglement between quantum memories for light working at different wavelengths furthers this goal. Here, we report on a series of experiments with a thulium-doped crystal, serving as a quantum memory for 794 nm photons, an erbium-doped fibre, serving as a quantum memory for telecommunication-wavelength photons at 1535 nm, and a source of photon pairs created via spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Characterizing the phot…
The hierarchy of nonlocality and entanglement in multipartite systems is one of the fundamental problems in quantum physics. We study this topic in three-qubit systems considering the entanglement classification of stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). The equivalence under SLOCC divides threequbit states into separable, biseparable, W, and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) classes. The W and GHZ are two subclasses of genuine tripartite entanglement. We adopt the family of GHZ-symmetric states as a research subject, which share the symmetries of the GHZ state and have…
Entanglement is one of the strongest quantum correlation, and is a key ingredient in fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics and a resource for quantum technologies. While entanglement theory is well settled for distinguishable particles, there are five inequivalent approaches to entanglement of indistinguishable particles. We analyse the different definitions of indistinguishable particle entanglement in the light of the locality notion. This notion is specified by two steps: i) the identification of subsystems by means of their local operators; ii) the requirement that entanglement represen…
The unique entanglement measure is concurrence in a 2-qubit pure state. The maximum violation of Bell's inequality is monotonically increasing for this quantity. Therefore, people expect that pure state entanglement is relevant to the non-locality. For justification, we extend the study to three qubits. We consider all possible 3-qubit operators with a symmetric permutation. When only considering one entanglement measure, the numerical result contradicts expectation. Therefore, we conclude ``Non-Locality$\neq$Quantum Entanglement''. We propose the generalized $R$-matrix or correlation matrix f…
We consider two-dimensional states of matter satisfying an uniform area law for entanglement. We show that the topological entanglement entropy is equal to the minimum relative entropy distance from the reduced state to the set of thermal states of local models. The argument is based on strong subadditivity of quantum entropy. For states with zero topological entanglement entropy, in particular, the formula gives locality of the states at the boundary of a region as thermal states of local Hamiltonians. It also implies that the entanglement spectrum of a two-dimensional region is equal to the …
We study entanglement and non-locality of connected four-qubit hypergraph states. One obtains the SLOCC classification from the known LU-orbits. We then consider Mermin's polynomials and show that all four-qubit hypergraph states exhibit non-local behavior. Finally, we implement some of the corresponding inequalities on the IBM Quantum Experience.
Manipulating the quantum information of the radial modes of trapped ions: Linear phononics, entanglement generation, quantum state transmission and non-locality tests
Information that is stored in quantum-mechanical systems can be easily lost because of the interaction with the environment in a process known as decoherence. Possible physical implementations of many processes in quantum information theory involve systems of identical particles, whence comprehension of the dynamics of entanglement induced by decoherence processes in identical-particle open systems becomes relevant. Here we study the effects, and concomitant entanglement evolution, arising from the interaction between a system of two identical fermions and the environment, for two paradigmatic…
We suggest a formalism to illustrate the entanglement of identical particles in the first quantization language (1QL). Our 1QL formalism enables one to exploit all the well-established quantum information tools to understand the indistinguishable ones, including the reduced density matrix and familiar entanglement measures. The rigorous quantitative relation between the amount of entanglement and the spatial coherence of particles is possible in this formalism. Our entanglement detection process is a generalization of the entanglement extraction protocol for identical particles with mode split…
It was shown recently that entanglement of identical particles has a feature called dualism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 140404 (2013)], which is fundamentally connected with quantum indistinguishability. Here we report an experiment that observes the entanglement duality for the first time with two identical photons, which manifest polarization entanglement when labeled by different paths or path entanglement when labeled by polarization states. By adjusting the mismatch in frequency or arrival time of the entangled photons, we tune the photon indistinguishability from quantum to classical limit an…
It has been shown that the vacuum state of a free quantum field is entangled and such vacuum entanglement can be harvested by a pair of initially uncorrelated detectors interacting locally with the vacuum field for a finite time. In this paper, we examine the entanglement harvesting phenomenon of two non-identical inertial detectors with different energy gaps locally interacting with massless scalar fields via a Gaussian switching function. We focus on how entanglement harvesting depends on the energy gap difference from two perspectives: the amount of entanglement harvested and the harvesting…
We investigate the generation of entanglement in systems of identical fermions through a process involving particle detection, focusing on the implications that this kind of processes have for the concept of entanglement between fermionic particles. As a paradigmatic example we discuss in detail a scheme based on a splitting-plus-detection operation. This scheme generates states with accessible entanglement starting from an initial pure state of two indistinguishable fermions exhibiting correlations due purely to antisymmetrization. It is argued that the proposed extraction of entanglement doe…
We address the problem of entanglement protection against surrounding noise by a procedure suitably exploiting spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems. To this purpose, we take two initially separated and entangled identical qubits interacting with two independent noisy environments. Three typical models of environments are considered: amplitude damping channel, phase damping channel and depolarizing channel. After the interaction, we deform the wave functions of the two qubits to make them spatially overlap before performing spatially localized operations and classical communicat…
Wave-particle duality, superposition and entanglement are among the most counterintuitive features of quantum theory. Their clash with our classical expectations motivated hidden-variable (HV) theories. With the emergence of quantum technologies we can test experimentally the predictions of quantum theory {\em versus} HV theories and put strong restrictions on their key assumptions. Here we study an entanglement-assisted version of the quantum delayed-choice experiment and show that the extension of HV to the controlling devices only exacerbates the contradiction. We compare HV theories that s…
Quantum information and communication processing within quantum networks usually employs identical particles. Despite this, the physical role of quantum statistical nature of particles in large-scale networks remains elusive. Here, we show that just the indistinguishability of fermions makes it possible a new mechanism of entanglement transfer in many-node quantum networks. This process activates remote entanglement among distant sites, which do not share a common past, by only locally counting identical particles and classical communication. These results constitute the key achievement of the…
This paper points out the importance of the assumption of locality of physical interactions, and the concomitant necessity of propagation of an entity (in this case, off-shell quanta - virtual gravitons) between two non-relativistic test masses in unveiling the quantum nature of linearized gravity through a laboratory experiment. At the outset, we will argue that observing the quantum nature of a system is not limited to evidencing $O\left(\hbar\right)$ corrections to a classical theory: it instead hinges upon verifying tasks that a classical system cannot accomplish. We explain the background…
