With there being many technical and ethical issues with artificial intelligence (AI) that involve marginalized communities, there is a growing interest for design methods used with marginalized people that may be transferable to the design of AI technologies. Participatory design (PD) is a design method that is often used with marginalized communities for the design of social development, policy, IT and other matters and solutions. However, there are issues with the current PD, raising concerns when it is applied to the design of technologies, including AI technologies. This paper argues for the use of PD for the design of AI technologies, and introduces and proposes a new PD, which we call agile participatory design, that not only can could be used for the design of AI and data-driven technologies, but also overcomes issues surrounding current PD and its use in the design of such technologies.
The opacity of machine learning data is a significant threat to ethical data work and intelligible systems. Previous research has addressed this issue by proposing standardized checklists to document datasets. This paper expands that field of inquiry by proposing a shift of perspective: from documenting datasets toward documenting data production. We draw on participatory design and collaborate with data workers at two companies located in Bulgaria and Argentina, where the collection and annotation of data for machine learning are outsourced. Our investigation comprises 2.5 years of research, …
In this paper we report on a study conducted with a group of older adults in which they engaged in participatory design workshops to create a VR ATM training simulation. Based on observation, recordings and the developed VR application we present the results of the workshops and offer considerations and recommendations for organizing opportunities for end users, in this case older adults, to directly engage in co-creation of cutting-edge ICT solutions. These include co-designing interfaces and interaction schemes for emerging technologies like VR and AR. We discuss such aspects as user engagem…
Population aging and the ubiquity of technology in everyday life have made designing solutions for older adults a necessity. User-centered and participatory design approaches include elderly users in the software development process to some extent but do not encourage them to take a leading role in designing applications to address their unmet needs. Teaching seniors about software design could help them actively participate in creating much needed solutions for their age group but this cannot be done without first understanding their conceptual models of technology. Past experiences play a si…

We propose a one-day transdisciplinary creative workshop in the broad area of HCI focused on multiple opportunities of incorporating participatory design into research and industry practice. This workshop will become a venue to share experiences and novel ideas in this area. At the same time, we will brainstorm and explore frontiers of HCI related to engaging end users in design and development practices of established and emerging ICT solutions often overlooked in terms of co-design. We welcome a wide scope of contributions in HCI which explore sustainable opportunities for participatory desi…

Despite growing calls for participation in AI design, there are to date few empirical studies of what these processes look like and how they can be structured for meaningful engagement with domain experts. In this paper, we examine a notable yet understudied AI design process in the legal domain that took place over a decade ago, the impact of which still informs legal automation efforts today. Specifically, we examine the design and evaluation activities that took place from 2006 to 2011 within the TeXT Retrieval Conference's (TREC) Legal Track, a computational research venue hosted by the Na…
The growth of misinformation technology necessitates the need to identify fake videos. One approach to preventing the consumption of these fake videos is provenance which allows the user to authenticate media content to its original source. This research designs and investigates the use of provenance indicators to help users identify fake videos. We first interview users regarding their experiences with different misinformation modes (text, image, video) to guide the design of indicators within users' existing perspectives. Then, we conduct a participatory design study to develop and design fa…
While domestic violence (DV) is prevalent in all socioeconomic settings, identity highly impacts how one experiences and recovers from abuse. This work examines US-based Muslim women's challenges when seeking help and healing from domestic violence. Through participatory interviews with 23 participants within the DV ecosystem, we find that victim-survivors' autonomy is compromised throughout the abuse, within their immediate communities, and when involving the criminal justice system. To address such harms, we adapt a survivor-centered transformative justice (SCTJ) approach, a framework to dis…
While artificial intelligence (AI) and other automation technologies might lead to enormous progress in healthcare, they may also have undesired consequences for people working in the field. In this interdisciplinary study, we capture empirical evidence of not only what healthcare work could be automated, but also what should be automated. We quantitatively investigate these research questions by utilizing probabilistic machine learning models trained on thousands of ratings, provided by both healthcare practitioners and automation experts. Based on our findings, we present an analytical tool …
"My sex-related data is more sensitive than my financial data and I want the same level of security and privacy": User Risk Perceptions and Protective Actions in Female-oriented Technologies
In the age of big data, companies and governments are increasingly using algorithms to inform hiring decisions, employee management, policing, credit scoring, insurance pricing, and many more aspects of our lives. AI systems can help us make evidence-driven, efficient decisions, but can also confront us with unjustified, discriminatory decisions wrongly assumed to be accurate because they are made automatically and quantitatively. It is becoming evident that these technological developments are consequential to people's fundamental human rights. Despite increasing attention to these urgent cha…
The physically impaired commonly have difficulties performing simple routine tasks without relying on other individuals who are not always readily available and thus make them strive for independence. While their impaired abilities can in many cases be augmented (to certain degrees) with the use of assistive technologies, there has been little attention to their applications in embodied AI with assistive technologies. This paper presents the modular framework, architecture, and design of the mid-fidelity prototype of MARVIN: an artificial-intelligence-powered robotic assistant designed to help…
In the wake of the on-going digital revolution, we will see a dramatic transformation of our economy and most of our societal institutions. While the benefits of this transformation can be massive, there are also tremendous risks to our society. After the automation of many production processes and the creation of self-driving vehicles, the automation of society is next. This is moving us to a tipping point and to a crossroads: we must decide between a society in which the actions are determined in a top-down way and then implemented by coercion or manipulative technologies (such as personaliz…
This article offers several contributions to the interdisciplinary project of responsible research and innovation in data science and AI. First, it provides a critical analysis of current efforts to establish practical mechanisms for algorithmic assessment, which are used to operationalise normative principles, such as sustainability, accountability, transparency, fairness, and explainability, in order to identify limitations and gaps with the current approaches. Second, it provides an accessible introduction to the methodology of argument-based assurance, and explores how it is currently bein…
As the Internet of Things continues to take hold in the commercial world, the teams designing these new technologies are constantly evolving and turning their hand to uncharted territory. This is especially key within the field of secondary service design as businesses attempt to utilize and find value in the sensor data being produced by connected products. This paper discusses the ways in which a commercial design team use smart thermostat data to prototype an advice-giving chatbot. The team collaborate to produce a chat sequence through careful ordering of data & reasoning about customer re…
Big data analytics has gathered immense research attention lately because of its ability to harness useful information from heaps of data. Cloud computing has been adjudged as one of the best infrastructural solutions for implementation of big data analytics. This research paper proposes a five-layer model for cloud-based big data analytics that uses dew computing and edge computing concepts. Besides this, the paper also presents an approach for creation of custom big data stack by selecting technologies on the basis of identified data and computing models for the application
Fifth generation (5G) aims to connect massive devices with even higher reliability, lower latency and even faster transmission speed, which are vital for implementing the e-health systems. However, the current efforts on 5G e-health systems are still not enough to accomplish its full blueprint. In this article, we first discuss the related technologies from physical layer, upper layer and cross layer perspectives on designing the 5G e-health systems. We afterwards elaborate two use cases according to our implementations, i.e., 5G e-health systems for remote health and 5G e-health systems for C…
