This article investigates the heat kernel of the two-dimensional uniform spanning tree. We improve previous work by demonstrating the occurrence of log-logarithmic fluctuations around the leading order polynomial behaviour for the on-diagonal part of the quenched heat kernel. In addition we give two-sided estimates for the averaged heat kernel, and we show that the exponents that appear in the off-diagonal parts of the quenched and averaged versions of the heat kernel differ. Finally, we derive various scaling limits for the heat kernel, the implications of which include enabling us to sharpen the known asymptotics regarding the on-diagonal part of the averaged heat kernel and the expected distance travelled by the associated simple random walk.
We consider random walk with bounded jumps on a hypercubic lattice of arbitrary dimension in a dynamic random environment. The environment is temporally independent and spatially translation invariant. We study the rate functions of the level-3 averaged and quenched large deviation principles from the point of view of the particle. In the averaged case the rate function is a specific relative entropy, while in the quenched case it is a Donsker-Varadhan type relative entropy for Markov processes. We relate these entropies to each other and seek to identify the minimizers of the level-3 to level…
We consider large deviations for nearest-neighbor random walk in a uniformly elliptic i.i.d. environment. It is easy to see that the quenched and the averaged rate functions are not identically equal. When the dimension is at least four and Sznitman's transience condition (T) is satisfied, we prove that these rate functions are finite and equal on a closed set whose interior contains every nonzero velocity at which the rate functions vanish.
We discuss the quenched tail estimates for the random walk in random scenery. The random walk is the symmetric nearest neighbor walk and the random scenery is assumed to be independent and identically distributed, non-negative, and has a power law tail. We identify the long time aymptotics of the upper deviation probability of the random walk in quenched random scenery, depending on the tail of scenery distribution and the amount of the deviation. The result is in turn applied to the tail estimates for a random walk in random conductance which has a layered structure.
In 2003, Varadhan [V03] developed a robust method for proving quenched and averaged large deviations for random walks in a uniformly elliptic and i.i.d. environment (RWRE) on $\mathbb Z^d$. One fundamental question which remained open was to determine when the quenched and averaged large deviation rate functions agree, and when they do not. In this article we show that for RWRE in uniformly elliptic and i.i.d. environment in $d\geq 4$, the two rate functions agree on any compact set contained in the interior of their domain which does not contain the origin, provided that the disorder of the e…
We consider the quenched and the averaged (or annealed) large deviation rate functions $I_q$ and $I_a$ for space-time and (the usual) space-only RWRE on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. By Jensen's inequality, $I_a\leq I_q$. In the space-time case, when $d\geq3+1$, $I_q$ and $I_a$ are known to be equal on an open set containing the typical velocity $ξ_o$. When $d=1+1$, we prove that $I_q$ and $I_a$ are equal only at $ξ_o$. Similarly, when d=2+1, we show that $I_a<I_q$ on a punctured neighborhood of $ξ_o$. In the space-only case, we provide a class of non-nestling walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with d=2 or 3, and prov…
We consider a one-dimensional, transient random walk in a random i.i.d. environment. The asymptotic behaviour of such random walk depends to a large extent on a crucial parameter $κ>0$ that determines the fluctuations of the process. When $0<κ<2$, the averaged distributions of the hitting times of the random walk converge to a $κ$-stable distribution. However, it was shown recently that in this case there does not exist a quenched limiting distribution of the hitting times. That is, it is not true that for almost every fixed environment, the distributions of the hitting times (centered and sca…
We consider a random walk in a random environment (RWRE) on the strip of finite width $\mathbb{Z} \times \{1,2,\ldots,d\}$. We prove both quenched and averaged large deviation principles for the position and the hitting times of the RWRE. Moreover, we prove a variational formula that relates the quenched and averaged rate functions, thus extending a result of Comets, Gantert, and Zeitouni for nearest-neighbor RWRE on $\mathbb{Z}$
For a random walk in a uniformly elliptic and i.i.d. environment on $\mathbb Z^d$ with $d \geq 4$, we show that the quenched and annealed large deviations rate functions agree on any compact set contained in the boundary $\partial \mathbb{D}:=\{ x \in \mathbb R^d : |x|_1 =1\}$ of their domain which does not intersect any of the $(d-2)$-dimensional facets of $\partial \mathbb{D}$, provided that the disorder of the environment is~low~enough. As a consequence, we obtain a simple explicit formula for both rate functions on $\partial \mathbb{D}$ at low disorder. In contrast to previous works, our r…
We consider the quenched localisation of the Bouchaud trap model on the positive integers in the case that the trap distribution has a slowly varying tail at infinity. Our main result is that for each $N \in \{2, 3, \ldots\}$ there exists a slowly varying tail such that quenched localisation occurs on exactly $N$ sites. As far as we are aware, this is the first example of a model in which the exact number of localisation sites are able to be `tuned' according to the model parameters. Key intuition for this result is provided by an observation about the sum-max ratio for sequences of independen…
This is a continuation of our earlier work [Stochastic Processes and their Applications, 129(1), pp.102--128, 2019] on the random walk in random scenery and in random layered conductance. We complete the picture of upper deviation of the random walk in random scenery, and also prove a bound on lower deviation probability. Based on these results, we determine asymptotics of the return probability, a certain moderate deviation probability, and the Green function of the random walk in random layered conductance.
Unlike classical simple random walks, one-dimensional random walks in random environments (RWRE) are known to have a wide array of potential limiting distributions. Under certain assumptions, however, it is known that CLT-like limiting distributions hold for the walk under both the quenched and averaged measures. We give upper bounds on the rates of convergence for the quenched central limit theorems for both the hitting time and position of the RWRE with polynomial rates of convergence that depend on the distribution on environments.
We study an inhomogeneous generalization of the classical corner growth in which the weights are exponentially distributed with random parameters. Our main interest is in the quenched and annealed large deviation properties of the last passage times. We derive variational representations of the rate functions for right tail large deviations. The quenched rate function can be computed explicitly for certain choices of the parameter distributions. We present a mechanism for rate n left tail annealed large deviations. In the quenched model these deviations have rate strictly greater than n. The a…
The survival problem for a diffusing particle moving among random traps is considered. We introduce a simple argument to derive the quenched asymptotics of the survival probability from the Lifshitz tail effect for the associated operator. In particular, the upper bound is proved in fairly general settings and is shown to be sharp in the case of the Brownian motion in the Poissonian obstacles. As an application, we derive the quenched asymptotics for the Brownian motion in traps distributed according to a random perturbation of the lattice.
The main goal of the paper is to prove central limit theorems for the magnetization rescaled by $\sqrt{N}$ for the Ising model on random graphs with $N$ vertices. Both random quenched and averaged quenched measures are considered. We work in the uniqueness regime $β>β_c$ or $β>0$ and $B\neq0$, where $β$ is the inverse temperature, $β_c$ is the critical inverse temperature and $B$ is the external magnetic field. In the random quenched setting our results apply to general tree-like random graphs (as introduced by Dembo, Montanari and further studied by Dommers and the first and third author) and…
We study a one-dimensional random walk among random conductances, with unbounded jumps. Assuming the ergodicity of the collection of conductances and a few other technical conditions (uniform ellipticity and polynomial bounds on the tails of the jumps) we prove a quenched conditional invariance principle for the random walk, under the condition that it remains positive until time $n$. As a corollary of this result, we study the effect of conditioning the random walk to exceed level $n$ before returning to 0 as $n\to \infty$.
We study a one-dimensional random walk among random conductances, with unbounded jumps. Assuming the ergodicity of the collection of conductances and a few other technical conditions (uniform ellipticity and polynomial bounds on the tails of the jumps) we prove a quenched \textit{uniform} invariance principle for the random walk. This means that the rescaled trajectory of length $n$ is (in a certain sense) close enough to the Brownian motion, uniformly with respect to the choice of the starting location in an interval of length $O(\sqrt{n})$ around the origin.
When we cut an i.i.d. sequence of letters into words according to an independent renewal process, we obtain an i.i.d. sequence of words. In the \emph{annealed} large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical process of words, the rate function is the specific relative entropy of the observed law of words w.r.t. the reference law of words. In the present paper we consider the \emph{quenched} LDP, i.e., we condition on a typical letter sequence. We focus on the case where the renewal process has an \emph{algebraic} tail. The rate function turns out to be a sum of two terms, one being the annea…
This thesis concerns the study of random walks in random environments (RWRE). Since there are two levels of randomness for random walks in random environments, there are two different distributions for the random walk that can be studied. The quenched distribution is the law of the random walk conditioned on a given environment. The annealed distribution is the quenched law averaged over all environments. The main results of the thesis fall into two categories: quenched limiting distributions for one-dimensional, transient RWRE and annealed large deviations for multidimensional RWRE. The analy…

One of the main tools for proving these conditional limit la…
We consider the harmonic crystal on the d-dimensional lattice, d larger or equal to 3, that is the centered Gaussian field $ϕ$ with covariance given by the Green function of the simple random walk on $Z^d$. Our main aim is to obtain quantitative information on the repulsion phenomenon that arises when we condition the field to be larger than an IID field $σ$ (which is also independent of $ϕ$), for every x in a large region $D_N=ND\cap \Z^d$, with N a positive integer and $D \subset\R^d$. We are mostly motivated by results for given typical realizations of the $σ$ (quenched set-up), since the c…
In this article, we prove global and local (point-wise) volume and heat kernel bounds for the continuum random tree. We demonstrate that there are almost-surely logarithmic global fluctuations and log-logarithmic local fluctuations in the volume of balls of radius $r$ about the leading order polynomial term as $r\to0$. We also show that the on-diagonal part of the heat kernel exhibits corresponding global and local fluctuations as $t\to0$ almost-surely. Finally, we prove that this quenched (almost-sure) behaviour contrasts with the local annealed (averaged over all realisations of the tree) vo…
