This paper considers optimization of smooth nonconvex functionals in smooth infinite dimensional spaces. A Hölder gradient descent algorithm is first proposed for finding approximate first-order points of regularized polynomial functionals. This method is then applied to analyze the evaluation complexity of an adaptive regularization method which searches for approximate first-order points of functionals with $β$-Hölder continuous derivatives. It is shown that finding an $ε$-approximate first-order point requires at most $O(ε^{-\frac{p+β}{p+β-1}})$ evaluations of the functional and its first $p$ derivatives.
In this work we consider stochastic gradient descent (SGD) for solving linear inverse problems in Banach spaces. SGD and its variants have been established as one of the most successful optimisation methods in machine learning, imaging and signal processing, etc. At each iteration SGD uses a single datum, or a small subset of data, resulting in highly scalable methods that are very attractive for large-scale inverse problems. Nonetheless, the theoretical analysis of SGD-based approaches for inverse problems has thus far been largely limited to Euclidean and Hilbert spaces. In this work we pres…
We consider a stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithm for solving linear inverse problems (e.g., CT image reconstruction) in the Banach space framework of variable exponent Lebesgue spaces $\ell^{(p_n)}(\mathbb{R})$. Such non-standard spaces have been recently proved to be the appropriate functional framework to enforce pixel-adaptive regularisation in signal and image processing applications. Compared to its use in Hilbert settings, however, the application of SGD in the Banach setting of $\ell^{(p_n)}(\mathbb{R})$ is not straightforward, due, in particular to the lack of a closed-form ex…
The stochastic Auxiliary Problem Principle (APP) algorithm is a general Stochastic Approximation (SA) scheme that turns the resolution of an original optimization problem into the iterative resolution of a sequence of auxiliary problems. This framework has been introduced to design decomposition-coordination schemes but also encompasses many well-known SA algorithms such as stochastic gradient descent or stochastic mirror descent. We study the stochastic APP in the case where the iterates lie in a Banach space and we consider an additive error on the computation of the subgradient of the objec…
Our main result concerns the following condition: {\bf Condition C.} Let $X$ be a Banach space. A $C^1$ function $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ satisfies Condition C if whenever $\{x_n\}$ weakly converges to $x$ and $\lim _{n\rightarrow\infty}||\nabla f(x_n)||=0$, then $\nabla f(x)=0$. We assume that there is given a canonical isomorphism between $X$ and its dual $X^*$, for example when $X$ is a Hilbert space. {\bf Theorem.} Let $X$ be a reflexive, complete Banach space and $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a $C^2$ function which satisfies Condition C. Moreover, we assume that for every bounded set …
This paper investigates some aspects of the variational behaviour of nonsmooth functions, with special emphasis on certain stability phenomena. Relationships linking such properties as sharp minimality, superstability, error bound and sufficiency of first-order optimality conditions are discussed. Their study is performed by employing the steepest descent rate, a rather general tool, which is adequate for a metric space analysis. The positivity of the steepest descent rate is then characterized in terms of $Φ$-subdifferentials. If specialized to a Banach space setting, the resulting characteri…
We introduce several new black-box reductions that significantly improve the design of adaptive and parameter-free online learning algorithms by simplifying analysis, improving regret guarantees, and sometimes even improving runtime. We reduce parameter-free online learning to online exp-concave optimization, we reduce optimization in a Banach space to one-dimensional optimization, and we reduce optimization over a constrained domain to unconstrained optimization. All of our reductions run as fast as online gradient descent. We use our new techniques to improve upon the previously best regret …
In this paper, the convergence of alternating minimization is established for non-smooth convex optimization in Banach spaces, and novel rates of convergence are provided. As objective function a composition of a smooth and a non-smooth part is considered with the latter being block-separable, e.g., corresponding to convex constraints or regularization. For the smooth part, three different relaxations of strong convexity are considered: (i) quasi-strong convexity; (ii) quadratic functional growth; and (iii) plain convexity. Linear convergence is established for the first two cases, generalizin…
In this thesis we develop a functional analytic framework for shape optimization with elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) constraints in classical function spaces (Hölder spaces). This approach is motivated by shape optimization problems, which are subjected to linear elasticity constraints and involve a special class of shape functionals which calculate the failure rate of a mechanically loaded device w.r.t. the component shape. These objectives are ill-defined for $H^1$-solutions of the state equation and the shape derivatives are not defined for $H^1$-material derivatives. Thus, th…
