The paper presents magnetic field measurements for 15 chemically peculiar (CP) stars of subgroup~1b in the OrionOB1 association. We have found that the proportion of stars with strong magnetic fields among these 15 CP stars is almost twice as large as in subgroup 1a. Along with this, the age of subgroup 1b is estimated as 2 Myr, and the age of subgroup~1a is in the order of 10 Myr. The average root-mean-square magnetic field Be for stars in subgroup 1b is 2.3 times higher than that for stars in subgroup 1a. The conclusions obtained fall within the concept of the fossil origin of large-scale magnetic fields in B and A stars, but the rate of field weakening with age appears anomalously high. We present our results as an important observational test for calibrating the theory of stellar magnetic field formation and evolution.
A detailed spectroscopic survey of chemically peculiar (CP) stars in the Orion OB1 association is the most comprehensive observational program in the field of stellar magnetism that has been carried out at SAO so far. As at the end of 2018, we have completed surveying CP stars in the oldest subgroup $\textit{a}$ of the association. In this paper, we give a short overview of CP members of the subgroup showing both direct and indirect signatures of multiplicity. Among the overall 11 stars which had been classified as peculiar, we found several good candidates for further detailed study.
Using images taken with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), the first extensive survey of low mass and substellar objects is made in the 15-20 Myr Upper Centaurus Lupus (UCL) and Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC) subgroups of the Scorpius Centaurus OB Association (Sco-Cen). Due to the size of our dataset (>2Tb) we developed an extensive open source set of python libraries to reduce our images, including astrometry, coaddition, and PSF photometry. Our survey consists of 29$\times$3 deg$^2$ fields in the UCL and LCC subgroups of Sco-Cen and the creation of a catalog with over 11 million point sources. We c…
We present a kinematic study of the Scorpius-Centaurus (Sco-Cen) OB association (Sco OB2) using Gaia DR1 parallaxes and proper motions. Our goal is to test the classical theory that OB associations are the expanded remnants of dense and compact star clusters disrupted by processes such as residual gas expulsion. Gaia astrometry is available for 258 out of 433 members of the association, with revised Hipparcos astrometry used for the remainder. We use this data to confirm that the three subgroups of Sco-Cen are gravitationally unbound and have non-isotropic velocity dispersions, suggesting they…
We summarise the results of a spectropolarimetric survey of 56 chemically peculiar (CP) stars in the association of Orion OB1. We uniformly collected the observational material with the 6-m telescope BTA of the Special Astrophysical Observatory in 2013-2021. We identify 14 new magnetic CP stars with a longitudinal magnetic field exceeding approximately 500 G. The studied sample contains 31 magnetic stars or 55% of the whole CP population in Orion OB1. We show that the percentage of the magnetic CP stars and the field strength drops sharply with age. The mean longitudinal magnetic field in the …
We present new photometric and spectroscopic data for the M-type members of the TW Hya association with the aim of a comprehensive study of accretion, disks and magnetic activity at the critical age of ~10 Myr where circumstellar matter disappears.
We utilize spectroscopically derived model atmosphere parameters and the \ion{Li}{1} $\lambda6104$ subordinate line and the $\lambda6708$ doublet to derive lithium abundances for 12 members of the Upper-Centaurus Lupus (UCL) and Lower-Centaurus Crux (LCC) subgroups of the Scorpius Centaurus OB Association. The results indicate any intrinsic Li scatter in our 0.9-1.4 $M_{\odot}$ stars is limited to ${\sim}0.15$ dex, consistent with the lack of dispersion in ${\ge}1.0$ $M_{\odot}$ stars in the 100 Myr Pleiades and 30-50 Myr IC 2391 and 2602 clusters. Both ab initio uncertainty estimates and the …
We present an analysis of the WISE photometric data for 829 stars in the Sco-Cen OB2 association, using the latest high-mass membership probabilities. We detect infrared excesses associated with 135 BAF-type stars, 99 of which are secure Sco-Cen members. There is a clear increase in excess fraction with membership probability, which can be fitted linearly. We infer that 41+-5% of Sco-Cen OB2 BAF stars to have excesses, while the field star excess fraction is consistent with zero. This is the first time that the probability of non-membership has been used in the calculation of excess fractions …
The magnetic properties of the Sun's polar faculae are investigated with spectropolarimetric observations of the north polar region obtained by the Hinode satellite in 2007 September. Polar faculae are embedded in nearly all magnetic patches with fluxes greater than $10^{18}$ Mx, while magnetic patches without polar faculae dominate in the flux range below $10^{18}$ Mx. The faculae are considerably smaller than their parent patches, and single magnetic patches contain single or multiple faculae. The faculae in general have higher intrinsic magnetic field strengths than the surrounding regions …
Recent dedicated Hinode polar region campaigns revealed the presence of concentrated kilogauss patches of magnetic field in the polar regions of the Sun which are also shown to be correlated with facular bright points at the photospheric level. In this work, we demonstrate that this spatial intermittency of the magnetic field persists even up to the chromospheric heights. The small-scale bright elements visible in the bright network lanes of solar network structure as seen in the Ca ii H images are termed as network bright points. We use special Hinode campaigns devoted to observe polar region…
OB associations are low-density groups of young stars that are dispersing from their birth environment into the Galactic field. They are important for understanding the star formation process, early stellar evolution, the properties and distribution of young stars and the processes by which young stellar groups disperse. Recent observations, particularly from Gaia, have shown that associations are highly complex, with a high degree of spatial, kinematic and temporal substructure. The kinematics of associations have shown them to be globally unbound and expanding, with the majority of recent st…
Upper Scorpius is a subgroup of the nearest OB association, Scorpius--Centaurus. Its young age makes it an important association to study star and planet formation. We present parallaxes to 52 low mass stars in Upper Scorpius, 28 of which have full kinematics. We measure ages of the individual stars by combining our measured parallaxes with pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks. We find there is a significant difference in the ages of stars with and without circumstellar disks. The stars without disks have a mean age of 4.9+/-0.8 Myr and those with disks have an older mean age of 8.2+/-0.9 Myr…
Two eclipsing binaries in the USco association have recently yielded precise values of masses and radii for 4 low-mass members of the association. Standard evolution models would require these dM4.5 - dM5 stars to have ages which are younger than the ages of more massive stars in the association by factors which appear (in extreme cases) to be as large as ~3. Are the stars in the association therefore non-coeval? We suggest that the answer is No: by incorporating the effects of magnetic inhibition of convective onset, we show that the stars in USco can be restored to coevality provided that th…
Stellar associations can be discerned as overdensities of sources not only in the physical space but also in the velocity space. The common motion of their members, gradually eroded by the galactic tidal field, is partially reminiscent of the initial kinematic structure. Using recent data from Gaia EDR3, combined with radial velocities from GALAH and APOGEE, we traced back the present positions of stars belonging to Upper Scorpius, a subgroup of Scorpius-Centaurus, the nearest OB association. About one half of the subgroup (the "clustered" population) appears composed of many smaller entities,…
There are a variety of different techniques available to estimate the ages of pre-main-sequence stars. Components of physical pairs, thanks to their strict coevality and the mass difference, such as the binary system analysed in this paper, are best suited to test the effectiveness of these different techniques. We consider the system WW Psa + TX Psa whose membership of the 25-Myr beta Pictoris association has been well established by earlier works. We investigate which age dating technique provides the best agreement between the age of the system and that of the association. We have photometr…
Chromospheric rapid blueshifted excursions (RBEs) are suggested to be the disk counterparts of type II spicules at the limb and believed to contribute to the coronal heating process. Previous identification of RBEs was mainly based on feature detection using Dopplergrams. In this paper, we study RBEs on 2011 October 21 in a very quiet region at the disk center, which were observed with the high-cadence imaging spectroscopy of the Ca II 8542 A line from the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer (IBIS). By using an automatic spectral analysis algorithm, a total of 98 RBEs are identified dur…
We report the results of a study of archival SuperWASP light curves for stars in Scorpius-Centaurus (Sco-Cen), the nearest OB association. We use SuperWASP time-series photometry to extract rotation periods for 189 candidate members of the Sco-Cen complex, and verify that 162 of those are members of the classic Sco-Cen subgroups of Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL), and Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC). This study provides the first measurements of rotation periods explicitly for large samples of pre-main sequence (pre-MS) stars spanning the UCL and LCC subgroups. Our final sample of …
When determining absolute ages of identifiably young stellar populations, results strongly depend on which stars are studied. Cooler (K, M) stars typically yield ages that are systematically younger than warmer (A, F, G) stars by a factor of two. I explore the possibility that these age discrepancies are the result of magnetic inhibition of convection in cool young stars by using magnetic stellar evolution isochrones to determine the age of the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association. A median age of 10 Myr consistent across spectral types A through M is found, except …
The surface rotation rates of young solar-type stars decrease rapidly with age from the end of the pre-main sequence though the early main sequence. This suggests that there is also an important change in the dynamos operating in these stars, which should be observable in their surface magnetic fields. Here we present early results in a study aimed at observing the evolution of these magnetic fields through this critical time period. We are observing stars in open clusters and stellar associations to provide precise ages, and using Zeeman Doppler Imaging to characterize the complex magnetic fi…
We present a new high-mass membership of the nearby Sco OB2 association based on HIPPARCOS positions, proper motions and parallaxes and radial velocities taken from the Kharchenko et al. (2007) catalogue. The Bayesian membership selection method developed makes no distinction between subgroups of Sco OB2 and utilises linear models in calculation of membership probabilities. We select 436 members, 88 of which are new members not included in previous membership selections. We include the classical non members Alpha-Cru and Beta-Cru as new members as well as the pre-main-sequence stars HIP 79080 …
Light bridges (LBs) are relatively bright structures that divide sunspot umbrae into two or more parts. Chromospheric LBs are known to be associated with various activities including fan-shaped jet-like ejections and brightenings. Although magnetic reconnection is frequently suggested to be responsible for such activities, not many studies present firm evidence to support the scenario. We carry out magnetic field measurements and imaging spectroscopy of a LB where fan-shaped jet-like ejections occur with co-spatial brightenings at their footpoints. We study LB fine structure and magnetic field…
We analyze high-cadence vector magnetograms (135~s) and flare-ribbon observations of 37 flares from the Solar Dynamics Observatory to understand the spatial and temporal properties of changes in the photospheric vector magnetic field and their relationship to footpoints of reconnected fields. Confirming previous studies, we find that the largest permanent changes in the horizontal field component lie near the polarity inversion line, whereas changes in the vertical field are less pronounced and are distributed throughout the active region. We find that pixels swept up by ribbons do not always …
We present results of a spectroscopic survey for new K- and M-type members of Scorpius-Centaurus (Sco-Cen), the nearest OB Association (~100-200 pc). Using an X-ray, proper motion and color-magnitude selected sample, we obtained spectra for 361 stars, for which we report spectral classifications and Li and Halpha equivalent widths. We identified 156 new members of Sco-Cen, and recovered 51 previously published members. We have combined these with previously known members to form a sample of 493 solar-mass (~0.7-1.3 Msun) members of Sco-Cen. We investigated the star-formation history of this sa…
Parker Solar Probe (PSP) data recorded within a heliocentric radial distance of 0.3 AU have revealed a magnetic field dominated by Alfvénic structures that undergo large local variations or even reversals of the radial magnetic field. They are called magnetic switchbacks, they are consistent with folds in magnetic field lines within a same magnetic sector, and are associated with velocity spikes during an otherwise calmer background. They are thought to originate either in the low solar atmosphere through magnetic reconnection processes, or result from the evolution of turbulence or velocity s…
We use helioseismic holography to study the association of shallow flows with solar flare activity in about 250 large sunspot groups observed between 2010 and 2014 with the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Four basic flow parameters: horizontal speed, horizontal component of divergence, vertical component of vorticity, and a vertical kinetic helicity proxy, are mapped for each active region during its passage across the solar disk. Flow indices are derived representing the mean and standard deviation of these parameters over magnetic masks and compared with c…
A total of 85 CP stars of various types are identified among 814 members of the Orion OB1 association. We selected 59 Bp stars, which account for 13.4% of the total number of B type stars in the association. The fraction of peculiar B type stars in the association is found to be twice higher than that of peculiar A type stars. Magnetic field are found in 22 stars, 17 of them are objects with anomalous helium lines. No significant differences are found between the field strengths in the Bp type stars of the association and Bp type field stars. We identified 17 binaries, which make up 20% of the…
Context: Lupus is recognised as one of the closest star-forming regions, but the lack of trigonometric parallaxes in the pre-Gaia era hampered many studies on the kinematic properties of this region and led to incomplete censuses of its stellar population. Aims: We use the second data release of the Gaia space mission combined with published ancillary radial velocity data to revise the census of stars and investigate the 6D structure of the Lupus complex. Methods: We performed a new membership analysis of the Lupus association based on astrometric and photometric data over a field of 160 deg2 …
Spectropolarimetric observations of a sunspot were carried out with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter at Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, Spain. Maps of the physical parameters were obtained from an inversion of the Stokes profiles observed in the infrared Fe i line at 15648 angstrom. The regular sunspot consisted of a light bridge which separated the two umbral cores of the same polarity. One of the arms of the light bridge formed an extension of a penumbral filament which comprised weak and highly inclined magnetic fields. In addition, the Stokes V profiles in this filament had an opposite …
Our star-count analysis of the Two Micron All Sky Survey point sources resulted in an identification of the star cluster G144.9+0.4. The cluster was found, but not characterized, by Glushkova et al. We show that the cluster is physically associated with the Cam OB1 association at a distance of about 1 kpc and with an age of 1-2 Myr. Pre-main sequence stars are identified on the basis of photometric and proper motion data. A total of 91 additional OB star candidates was found in subgroups 1A and 1B, a significant increase from the currently known 43 OB stars. The OB members show an age spread t…
The active region magnetic field surrounding the filament plays an important role in filament formation, their evolution and disruption. We investigated a filament eruption that occurred in southern hemisphere of the Sun on July 08, 2011 using AIA and HMI data. The filament was located in a region close to the active region NOAA 11247 with its West-most footpoint anchored in the negative polarity plage region and the East-most in the positive polarity plage region. During observations, the magnetic flux was emerging in the active region and also in the plage regions. The flux emergence was sto…
We present 237 new spectroscopically confirmed pre-main-sequence K and M-type stars in the young Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Sco-Cen association, the near- est region of recent massive star formation. Using the Wide-Field Spectrograph at the Australian National University 2.3 m telescope at Siding Spring, we observed 397 kinematically and photometrically selected candidate members of Upper Scorpius, and identified new members by the presence of Lithium absorption. The HR-diagram of the new members shows a spread of ages, ranging from ~3-20 Myr, which broadly agrees with the current age esti…
Coronal dimmings, localized regions of reduced emission in the EUV and soft X-rays, are interpreted as density depletions due to mass loss during the CME expansion. They contain crucial information on the early evolution of CMEs low in the corona. For 62 dimming events, characteristic parameters are derived, statistically analyzed and compared with basic flare quantities. On average, coronal dimmings have a size of $2.15\times10^{10}$ km$^{2}$, contain a total unsigned magnetic flux of $1.75\times10^{21}$ Mx, and show a total brightness decrease of $-1.91\times10^{6}$ DN, which results in a re…
Filaments and coronal holes, two principal features observed in the solar corona are sources of space weather variations. Filament formation is closely associated with polarity inversion lines (PIL) on the solar photosphere which separate positive and negative polarities of the surface magnetic field. The origin of coronal holes is governed by large-scale unipolar magnetic patches on the photosphere from where open magnetic field lines extend to the heliosphere. We study properties of filaments, PILs and coronal holes in solar cycles 20, 21, 22 and 23 utilizing the McIntosh archive. We detect …
Frequencies of volcanic eruptions in the past 270 years are compared with variations of solar activity and summary curve of principal components of the solar background magnetic field (SBMF).Frequency analysis with Morlet wavelet reveals the most pronounced period of volcanic eruptions of 22 years. There is a strong correlation (0.84) between volcanic frequencies and the summary curve of SBMF for 11 cycles after 1868. The maxima of volcanic eruptions are shown to occur during solar activity cycles with the southern magnetic polarity. The next anticipated maximum of volcanic eruptions is expect…
With the aim of understanding how the magnetic properties of active regions (ARs) control the eruptive character of solar flares, we analyze 719 flares of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) class $\geq$C5.0 during 2010$-$2019. We carry out the first statistical study that investigates the flare-coronal mass ejections (CMEs) association rate as function of the flare intensity and the AR characteristics that produces the flare, in terms of its total unsigned magnetic flux ($Φ$$_{AR}$). Our results show that the slope of the flare-CME association rate with flare intensity re…
Our goal is to determine the rotational and magnetic-related activity properties of stars at different stages of evolution. We have focussed our attention on 6 young loose stellar associations within 100 pc and ages in the range 8-70 Myr: TW Hydrae (~8 Myr), beta Pictoris (~10 Myr), Tucana/Horologium, Columba, Carina (~30 Myr), and AB Doradus (~70 Myr). Additional data on alpha Persei and the Pleiades from the literature is also considered. Rotational periods of stars showing rotational modulation due to photospheric magnetic activity (i.e. starspots) have been determined applying the Lomb-Sca…
We aim to investigate the spatial location of the source of an active region (AR) jet and its relation with associated nonthermal type~III radio emission. An emission measure (EM) method was used to study the thermodynamic nature of the AR jet. The nonthermal type~{\rm III} radio burst observed at meterwavelength was studied using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio imaging and spectroscopic data. The local configuration of the magnetic field and the connectivity of the source region of the jet with open magnetic field structures was studied using a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) ext…
Magnetic cycles have been detected in tens of solar-like stars. The relationship between the cycle properties and global stellar parameters is not fully understood yet. We searched for activity cycles in 90 solar-like stars with ages between 4 and 95 Myr aiming to investigate the properties of activity cycles in this age range. We measured the length $P_{ cyc}$ of a given cycle by analyzing the long-term time-series of three activity indexes. For each star, we computed also the global magnetic activity index <IQR> that is proportional to the amplitude of the rotational modulation and is a prox…
Coronal Bright Points (CBPs) are ubiquitous structures in the solar atmosphere composed of hot small-scale loops observed in EUV or X-Rays in the quiet Sun and coronal holes. They are key elements to understand the heating of the corona; nonetheless, basic questions regarding their heating mechanisms, the chromosphere underneath, or the effects of flux emergence in these structures remain open. We have used the Bifrost code to carry out a 2D experiment in which a coronal-hole magnetic nullpoint configuration evolves perturbed by realistic granulation. To compare with observations, synthetic SD…
We aim at determining the rotational and magnetic-related activity properties of stars at different stages of evolution. We focus our attention primarily on members of young stellar associations of known ages. Specifically, we extend our previous analysis in Paper I (Messina et al. 2010, A&A 520, A15) to 3 additional young stellar associations beyond 100 pc and with ages in the range 6-40 Myr: epsilon Chamaeleontis (~6 Myr), Octans (~20 Myr), and Argus (~40 Myr). Additional rotational data of eta Chamaeleontis and IC2391 clusters are also considered. Rotational periods were determined from pho…
The surface rotation rates of young solar-type stars vary rapidly with age from the end of the pre-main sequence through the early main sequence. Important changes in the dynamos operating in these stars may result from this evolution, which should be observable in their surface magnetic fields. Here we present a study aimed at observing the evolution of these magnetic fields through this critical time period. We observed stars in open clusters and stellar associations of known ages, and used Zeeman Doppler Imaging to characterize their complex magnetic large-scale fields. Presented here are r…
In our earlier study of this series (Park et al. 2020, Paper I), we examined the hemispheric sign preference (HSP) of magnetic helicity flux $dH/dt$ across photospheric surfaces of 4802 samples of 1105 unique active regions (ARs) observed during solar cycle 24. Here, we investigate any association of the HSP, expressed as a degree of compliance, with flaring activity, analyzing the same set of $dH/dt$ estimates as used in Paper I. The AR samples under investigation are assigned to heliographic regions (HRs) defined in the Carrington longitude-latitude plane with a grid spacing of 45$^\circ$ in…
We have observed high-dispersion echelle spectra of main-sequence stars in five nearby young associations -- Argus, Carina-Near, Hercules-Lyra, Orion and Subgroup B4 -- and derived abundances for elements ranging from Na to Eu. These are the first chemical abundance measurements for two of the five associations, while the remaining three associations are analysed more extensively in our study. Our results support the presence of chemical homogeneity among association members with a typical star-to-star abundance scatter of about 0.06 dex or less over many elements. The five associations show l…
The Vela-Puppis region is known to host the Vela OB2 association as well as several young clusters featuring OB and pre-main sequence stars. Several spatial and kinematic subgroups have been identified in the recent years. By grouping stars based on their positions and velocity we can address the quetion of the dynamical history of the region and the mechanisms that drove stellar formation. The Gaia DR2 astrometry and photometry enables us to characterise the 3D spatial and 3D kinematic distribution of young stars and to estimate the ages of the identified components. We use an unsupervised cl…
We present an analysis of the ages and star-formation history of the F-type stars in the Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL) and Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC) subgroups of Scorpius-Centaurus. We find that 1) our empirical isochrones are consistent with the previously published age-rank of the Sco-Cen subgroups, 2) LCC and UCL appear to reach the main sequence turn-on at spectral types ~F4 and ~F2, respectively. An analysis of the A-type stars shows US reaching the main sequence at about spectral type ~A3. 3) The median ages for the pre-main sequence members of UCL and LCC are 16 Myr …
We have refined the census of stars and brown dwarfs in the Upper Sco association (~10 Myr, ~145 pc) by 1) updating the selection of candidate members from our previous survey to include the high-precision astrometry from the second data release of Gaia, 2) obtaining spectra of a few hundred candidate members to measure their spectral types and verify their youth, and 3) assessing the membership (largely with Gaia astrometry) of 2020 stars toward Upper Sco that show evidence of youth in this work and previous studies. We arrive at a catalog of 1761 objects that are adopted as members of Upper …
Based on the Gaia EDR3 astrometric parameters and our new systemic radial velocity of the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54/BD+53 2790, we studied the trace back motion of the system and propose that it originated in the subgroup of the Cepheus OB1 association (Age~4-10 Myr) with its brightest star BD+53 2820 (B0V; L~$10^{4.7}$L$_\odot$). The kinematic age of 4U 2206+54 is about 2.8$\pm$0.4 Myr, it is at a distance of 3.1-3.3 kpc and has a space velocity of 75-100 km/s with respect to this member star (BD+53 2820) of the Cep OB1 association. This runaway velocity indicates that the progenitor …
Scorpius-Centaurus is the nearest OB association and its hundreds of members were divided into sub-groups, including Lower Centaurus Crux. Here we study the dynamics of the Lower Centaurus Crux area stellar content. We report the revelation of a large moving group containing more than 1800 intermediate- and low-mass young stellar objects and brown dwarfs, that escaped identification until Gaia DR2 allowed to perform a kinematic and photometric selection. We investigate the stellar and substellar content of this moving group using the Gaia DR2 astrometric and photometric measurements. The media…
We use data from the first six encounters of Parker Solar Probe and employ the Partial Variance of Increments ($PVI$) method to study the statistical properties of coherent structures in the inner heliosphere with the aim of exploring physical connections between magnetic field intermittency and observable consequences such as plasma heating and turbulence dissipation. Our results support proton heating localized in the vicinity of, and strongly correlated with, magnetic structures characterized by $PVI \geq 1$. We show that on average, such events constitute $\approx 19\%$ of the dataset, tho…
We confirm and characterize a close-in ($P_{\rm{orb}}$ = 5.425 days), super-Neptune sized ($5.04^{+0.34}_{-0.37}$ Earth radii) planet transiting K2-33 (2MASS J16101473-1919095), a late-type (M3) pre-main sequence (11 Myr-old) star in the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association. The host star has the kinematics of a member of the Upper Scorpius OB association, and its spectrum contains lithium absorption, an unambiguous sign of youth (<20 Myr) in late-type dwarfs. We combine photometry from K2 and the ground-based MEarth project to refine the planet's properties and con…
