Ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are expected to produce the strongest electromagnetic fields in the known Universe. These highly-Lorentz contracted fields can manifest themselves as linearly polarized quasi-real photons that can interact via the Breit-Wheeler process to produce lepton anti-lepton pairs. The energy and momentum distribution of the produced dileptons carry information about the strength and spatial distribution of the colliding fields. Recently it has been demonstrated that photons from these fields can interact even in heavy-ion collisions with hadronic overlap, providing a purely electromagnetic probe of the produced medium. In this review we discuss the recent theoretical progress and experimental advances for mapping the ultra-strong electromagnetic fields produced in heavy-ion collisions via measurement of the Breit-Wheeler process.
Quantum electrodynamics predicts that the quantum vacuum is birefringent, but due to the very small cross-section this is yet to be confirmed by experiment. Vacuum birefringence arises as the elastic part of photon-photon scattering; the inelastic part is Breit-Wheeler pair-production. We outline how measurements of the photon-polarised nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process can be used to infer a measurement of nonlinear vacuum birefringence. As an example scenario, we calculate the accuracy of such a measurement for parameters anticipated at upcoming laser-particle experiments.
A possible setup for the experimental verification of linear Breit-Wheeler pair creation of electrons and positrons in photon-photon collisions is studied theoretically. It combines highly energetic bremsstrahlung photons, which are assumed to be generated by an incident beam of GeV electrons penetrating through a high-$Z$ target, with keV photons from an X-ray laser field, which is described as a focused Gaussian pulse. We discuss the dependencies of the pair yields on the incident electron energy, target thickness, laser parameters, and collision geometry. It is shown that, for suitable cond…
A variant of quantum electrodynamics coupled to a dark photon through a kinetic mixing is studied. The analogous of the light-light diagram becomes the conversion process $γ'γ' \to γγ$ and an expression for the differential cross section is estimated. For high energies beams, as in LHC, this differential cross section could be measurable and its magnitude would be typically similar to the total cross section of neutrinos, {\it i.e.} $\sim 10^{-50}\,{\text{m}}^2$.
Electron-positron pairs are produced through the Breit-Wheeler process when energetic photons traverse electromagnetic fields of sufficient strength. Here we consider a possible experimental geometry for observation of pair creation in the highly nonlinear regime, in which bremsstrahlung of an ultrarelativistic electron beam in a high-$Z$ target is used to produce $γ$ rays that collide with a counterpropagating laser pulse. We show how the target thickness may be chosen to optimize the yield of Breit-Wheeler positrons, and verify our analytical predictions with simulations of the cascade in th…
The assistance of an intense optical laser pulse on electron-positron pair production by the Breit-Wheeler and Schwinger processes in XFEL fields is analyzed. The impact of a laser beam on high-energy photon collisions with XFEL photons consists in a phase space redistribution of the pairs emerging in the Breit-Wheeler sub-process. We provide numerical examples of the differential cross section for parameters related to the European XFEL. Analogously, the Schwinger type pair production in pulsed fields with oscillating components referring to a superposition of optical laser and XFEL frequenci…
We investigate the optimization of the photon polarization to increase the yield of the Breit-Wheeler pair production in arbitrarily polarized plane wave backgrounds. We show that the optimized photon polarization can improve the positron yield by more than $20\%$ compared to the unpolarized case, in the intensity regime of current laser-particle experiments. The seed photon's optimal polarization is resulting from the polarization coupling with the polarization of the laser pulse. The compact expressions of the coupling coefficients in both the perturbative and nonperturbative regime are give…
The non-linear (strong-field) Breit-Wheeler $e^+e^-$ pair production by a probe photon traversing two consecutive short and ultra short (sub-cycle) laser pulses is considered within a QED framework. The temporal shape of the pulses and the distance between them are essential for the differential cross section as a function of the azimuthal angle distribution of the outgoing electron (positron). The found effect of a pronounced azimuthal anisotropy is important for sub-cycle pulses and decreases rapidly with increasing width of the individual pulses.
We study the non-linear Breit-Wheeler process $\vec γ' + \vec L \to e^+ + e^-$ in the interaction of linearly polarized probe photons ($\vec γ'$) with a linearly polarized laser beam ($\vec L$). In particular, we consider the asymmetry of the total cross section and the azimuthal electron distributions when the polarizations of the photon and laser beams in the initial state are mutually perpendicular or parallel. Considering intense laser beams and the strong field asymptotic we explore essentially the multi-photon dynamics. The asymmetry exhibits some non-monotonic behavior depending on init…
Fully polarized nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production from a beam of polarized seed photons is investigated in pulsed plane-wave backgrounds. The particle (electron and positron) spin and photon polarization are comprehensively described with the theory of the density matrix. The compact expressions for the energy spectrum and spin polarization of the produced particles, depending on the initial polarization of the seed photon beam, are derived and discussed in both linearly and circularly polarized laser backgrounds. The numerical results suggest an appreciable improvement of the positron y…
In this paper we derive and discuss the completely spin- and photon-polarisation dependent probability rates for nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production. The locally constant field approximation, which is essential for applications in plasma-QED simulation codes, is rigorously derived from the strong-field QED matrix elements in the Furry picture for a general plane-wave background field. We discuss important polarisation correlation effects in the spectra of both processes. Asymptotic limits for both small and large values of $χ$ are derived and their spin/pol…
The Breit-Wheeler pair production process in $2+1$ dimensional spacetime is investigated. In the perturbative regime, non-vanishing rates at the energy threshold are found when odd numbers of photons take part on the reaction. This behaviour is understood as a direct consequence of the reduced dimensionality and resembles a corresponding prediction made in gapped graphene monolayers. In the non-perturbative strong field regime the effect of the dimensionality manifests itself in a different rate dependence on the quantum non-linearity parameter. The consequence of this deviation is discussed b…
The creation of electron-positron pairs by the strong-field Breit-Wheeler process in intense short laser pulses is investigated in the framework of laser-dressed quantum electrodynamics. Regarding laser field parameters in the multiphoton regime, special attention is brought to the energy spectrum of the created particles, which can be reproduced and explained by means of an intuitive model. The model is based on the probabilities of multiphoton events driven by the spectral components of the laser pulse. It allows, in particular, to identify interferences between different pair production cha…
Electron-positron pair production by the Breit-Wheeler process embedded in a strong laser pulse is analyzed. The transverse momentum spectrum displays prominent peaks which are interpreted as caustics, the positions of which are accessible by the stationary phases. Examples are given for the superposition of an XFEL beam with an optical high-intensity laser beam. Such a configuration is available, e.g., at LCLS at present and at European XFEL in near future. It requires a counter propagating probe photon beam with high energy which can be generated by synchronized inverse Compton backscatterin…
The only available analytical framework for investigating QED processes in a strong laser field systematically relies on approximating the latter as a plane wave. However, realistic high-intensity laser beams feature much more complex space-time structures than plane waves. Here, we show the feasibility of an analytical framework for investigating strong-field QED processes in laser beams of arbitrary space-time structure by determining the energy spectrum of positrons produced via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production as a function of the background field in the realistic assumption that th…
Counter-propagating and suitably polarized light (laser) beams can provide conditions for pair production. Here, we consider in more detail the following two situations: (i) In the homogeneity regions of anti-nodes of linearly polarized ultra-high intensity laser beams, the Schwinger process is dynamically assisted by a second high-frequency field, e.g. by a XFEL beam. (ii) A high-energy probe photon beam colliding with a superposition of co-propagating intense laser and XFEL beams gives rise to the laser assisted Breit-Wheeler process. Prospects of such bi-frequent field constellations with r…
Photoproduction of electron-positron pairs by the strong-field Breit-Wheeler process in an intense laser field is studied. The laser field is assumed to consist of two consecutive short pulses, with a variable time delay in between. By numerical calculations within the framework of scalar quantum electrodynamics, we demonstrate that the time delay exerts a strong impact on the pair-creation probability. For the case when both pulses are identical, the effect is traced back to the relative quantum phase of the interfering S-matrix amplitudes and explained within a simplified analytical model. C…
Photoproduction of electron-positron pairs by bremsstrahlung gamma-rays propagating through a high-intensity optical laser wave is studied. By calculating total pair production yields as well as energy and angular distributions of the produced particles for a range of laser intensities, we analyze the influence that the broad frequency spectrum of bremsstrahlung exerts on the properties of the process in the transition region between the perturbative and non-perturbative interaction regimes. In particular, we demonstrate a continuous shifting of the mainly contributing interval of bremsstrahlu…
Worldline instantons have previously been used to study the probability of Schwinger pair production (both the exponential and pre-exponential parts) and photon-stimulated pair production (the exponential part). Previous studies obtained the pair-production probability on the probability level by using unitarity, i.e. the imaginary part of the effective action for Schwinger pair production or the imaginary part of the polarization tensor for photon-stimulated pair production. The corresponding instantons are closed loops in the complex plane. Here we show how to use instantons on the amplitude…
The effect of the pulse envelope on electron-positron pair creation in a circularly-polarised laser pulse is investigated. Interference on the length scale of the pulse envelope, and smoothness of the pulse edges are found to influence the pair spectrum. A toy model of a flat-top pulse is used to identify pulse envelope effects inaccessible to local approaches. Broadening of channel openings and a widening of the energy and transverse momentum distribution of the pair are found to receive contributions that are below the local harmonic threshold. By comparing pair yields in a flat-top, sine-sq…
Experimental efforts toward the detection of the nonperturbative strong-field regime of the Breit-Wheeler pair creation process plan to combine incoherent sources of GeV $γ$ quanta and the coherent fields of tightly focussed optical laser pulses. This endeavour calls for a theoretical understanding of how the pair yields depend on the applied laser field profile. We provide estimates for the number of produced pairs in a setup where the high-energy radiation is generated via bremsstrahlung. Attention is paid to the role of the transversal and longitudinal focussing of the laser field, along wi…
Laser-driven brilliant controllable polarized $γ$-photon sources open the way for designing compact $γγ$ collider, which enable the large yield of linear Breit-Wheeler (LBW) pairs in a single shot and thus provide an opportunity for the investigation of polarized LBW process. In this work we investigate the polarization characteristics of LBW pair production via our developed spin-resolved binary collision simulation method. Polarization of $γ$-photons modifies the kinematics of scattering particles and induces the correlated energy-angle shift of LBW pairs, and the latter's polarization chara…
When a photon collides with a laser pulse, an electron-positron pair can be produced via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. A simulation framework has been developed to calculate this process, which is based on a ponderomotive approach that includes strong-field quantum electrodynamical effects via the locally monochromatic approximation (LMA). Here we compare simulation predictions for a variety of observables, in different physical regimes, with numerical evaluation of exact analytical results from theory. For the case of a focussed laser background, we also compare simulation with a high-…
Particles in quantum vortex states (QVS) carrying definite orbital angular momenta (OAM) brings new perspectives in various fundamental interaction processes. When unique properties arise in the QVS, understanding how OAM manifest itself between initial particles and the outcome in vortex particle collisions becomes essential. This is made possible by applying the complete vortex description for all involved particles such that angular momenta (AM) are represented by explicit quantum numbers and their connections are naturally retrieved. We demonstrate the full-vortex quantum-electrodynamics (…

Production of electron-positron pairs in the collision of a high-energy photon with a high-intensity few-cycle laser pulse is studied. By utilizing the frameworks of laser-dressed spinor and scalar quantum electrodynamics, a comparison between the production of pairs of Dirac and Klein-Gordon particles is drawn. Positron energy spectra and angular distributions are presented for various laser parameters. We identify conditions under which predictions from Klein-Gordon theory either closely resemble or largely differ from those of the proper Dirac theory. In particular, we address the question …
Generation of arbitrarily spin-polarized lepton (here refer in particular to electron and positron) beams has been investigated in the single-shot interaction of high-energy polarized $γ$ photons with an ultraintense asymmetric laser pulse via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (BW) pair production. We develop a fully spin-resolved semi-classical Monte Carlo method to describe the pair creation and polarization in the local constant field approximation. In nonlinear BW process the polarization of created pairs is simultaneously determined by the polarization of parent $γ$ photons, the polarization and as…
Nonlinear Compton scattering (NCS) and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (NBW) process are strongly multi-photon and highly nonlinear processes. In ultra intense lasers (normalized field amplitude $a_0 \gg 1$), radiation formation length is much shorter than a period and single NCS/NBW cannot be described as scatterings of electrons dressing plane waves with $γ$ photons for what they feel is a local constant crossed field. However, present theories in constant crossed fields are hard to give some important quantum features due to divergence problems, such as number of laser photons involved, instantaneo…
Entering the overcritical regime of nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production in collisions of bremsstrahlung $γ$-rays and superintense, tightly focused laser pulses
Comparative study of nonperturbative electron-positron pair production by intense laser fields colliding with either bremsstrahlung $γ$-rays or relativistic ions
Generation of quasi-particle--hole pairs in gapped graphene monolayers in the combined field of two counterpropagating light waves is studied. The process represents an analogue of electron-positron pair production from the QED vacuum by the Breit-Wheeler effect. We show, however, that the two-dimensional structure of graphene causes some striking differences between both scenarios. In particular, contrary to the QED case, it allows for non-zero pair production rates at the energy threshold when the Breit-Wheeler reaction proceeds nonlinearly with absorption of three photons.
We investigate the three-dimensional~(3D) and two-dimensional~(2D) charge distributions of a spin-one particle in terms of the multipole expansion. On account of the geometrical difference between 2D and 3D spaces, projecting the 3D electric distribution to the 2D one in the Breit frame brings about the influence of the quadrupole distribution upon the monopole one. Thus, the 2D charge distribution becomes spin-dependent. This effect should be sorted out from the relativistic effects arising from the Lorentz boost. We first provide the connections between the 2D and 3D distributions in the Bre…
We estimate the energy distribution of positrons produced in the interaction of ultra-relativistic electrons with a high-intensity laser beam. The underlying trident process is factorized on the probabilistic level. That is, we deploy a two-step mechanism for the formation of electron-positron pairs. In the first step, a high-energy photon is produced as a result of nonlinear Compton scattering. In the second step, an electron-positron pair is created by the nonlinear (multi-photon) Breit-Wheeler process.
We consider the scattering of probe particles on an ultra-boosted beam of charge, in the case that the fields of the beam are strong and must be treated non-perturbatively. We show that the fields of the ultra-boosted beam act as stochastic plane waves - scattering amplitudes (of elastic scattering, nonlinear Compton and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler) are obtained without approximation by averaging plane wave scattering amplitudes over all possible plane wave parameters. The relevant plane waves are ultra-short and, as such, scattering on ultra-boosted beams does not exhibit the conjectured strong-f…
This work provides an overview of our recent results in studying two most important and widely discussed quantum processes: electron-positron pairs production off a probe photon propagating through a polarized short-pulsed electromagnetic (e.g.\ laser) wave field or generalized Breit-Wheeler process, and a single a photon emission off an electron interacting with the laser pules, so-called non-linear Compton scattering. We show that the probabilities of particle production in both processes are determined by interplay of two dynamical effects, where the first one is related to the shape and du…
