In this study, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments for Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 metamagnetic shape memory alloy were performed under high magnetic fields up to 12 T using a pulsed magnet. Field-induced reverse transformation to austenite phase caused considerable changes in the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) signals and the magnetic moments of the ferromagnetic coupling between Mn, Ni, and Co were determined. The spin magnetic moment, Mspin, and orbital magnetic moment, Morb, of Mn atom in the induced austenite ferromagnetic phase, estimated based on the magneto-optical sum rule, were 3.2 and 0.13 μB, respectively, resulting in an Morb / Mspin ratio of 0.04. In the element-specific magnetization curves recorded at 150 K, metamagnetic behavior associated with the field-induced reverse transformation is clearly observed and reverse transformation finishing magnetic field and martensitic transformation starting magnetic field are detected. There was almost no difference in the magnetically averaged XAS spectrum for Mn-L2,3 edges between in the martensite and in the magnetic field-induced austenite phases, however, it was visible for Ni, indicating that Ni 3d-electrons mainly contribute to martensitic transformation.
Ferromagnetic InMnAs has been prepared by Mn ion implantation and pulsed laser annealing. The InMnAs layer reveals a saturated magnetization of 2.6 mu_B/Mn at 5 K and a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The Curie temperature is determined to be 46 K, which is higher than those in previous reports with similar Mn concentrations. Ferromagnetism is further evidenced by the large magnetic circular dichroism.
Resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction experiments on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice TbB$_4$ were carried out under strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 30 T. TbB$_4$ exhibits a multi-step magnetization process above 16 T when magnetic fields are applied along the c-axis. We examined the intensity of the 010 magnetic reflection as a function of magnetic field and found that the magnetization plateau phases are accompanied by large XY components of magnetic moments, in contrast to normal fractional magnetization plateau phases. The magnetization was calculated using a simple spin model deduced from…
We have measured the dynamic alignment properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions in pulsed high magnetic fields through linear dichroism spectroscopy. Millisecond-duration pulsed high magnetic fields up to 56 T as well as microsecond-duration pulsed ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 166 T were used. Due to their anisotropic magnetic properties, SWNTs align in an applied magnetic field, and because of their anisotropic optical properties, aligned SWNTs show linear dichroism. The characteristics of their overall alignment depend on several factors, including the viscosity and …
The structural and magnetic properties of Y1-xErxFe2 intermetallic compounds and their hydrides and deuterides Y1-xErxFe2H(D)4.2 have been investigated using X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements under static and pulsed magnetic field up to 60 T. The intermetallics crystallize in the C15 cubic structure , whereas corresponding hydrides and deuterides crystallize in a monoclinic structure. All compounds display a linear decrease of the unit cell volume versus Er concentration; the hydrides have a 0.8% larger cell volume compared to the deuterides with same Er content. They are ferrimagnet…
The high brightness, broad spectral coverage and pulsed characteristics of infrared synchrotron radiation enable time-resolved spectroscopy under throughput-limited optical systems, as can occur with the high-field magnet cryostat systems used to study electron dynamics and cyclotron resonance by far-infrared techniques. A natural extension for magnetospectroscopy is to sense circular dichroism, i.e. the difference in a material's optical response for left and right circularly polarized light. A key component for spectroscopic circular dichroism is an achromatic 1/4 wave retarder functioning o…

To solve the puzzle of metamagnetic phenomena in heavy fermion systems, we have compared paramagnetic isostructural Ce and Yb systems, CeNi$_2$Ge$_2$ and YbNi$_2$Ge$_2$, both of which are located near a magnetic instability. The most intriguing result is discovery of a metamagnetic-like transition in both systems from magnetization measurements in a pulsed magnetic fields. This is the first observation of the metamagnetism for isomorphic Ce and Yb paramagnetic systems. Similar to other metamagnets, the metamagnetic transition fields for both compounds are well scaled by the temperature $T_χ^{\…
X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Eu L-edge (2p->5d) in two compounds exhibiting valence fluctuation, namely EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)2 and EuNi2P2, has been investigated at pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. A distinct XMCD peak corresponding to the trivalent state (Eu3+; f6), whose ground state is nonmagnetic (J=0), was observed in addition to the main XMCD peak corresponding to the magnetic (J=7/2) divalent state (Eu2+; f7). This result indicates that the 5d electrons belonging to both valence states are magnetically polarized. It was also found that the ratio P5d(3+)/P5d(2+…
Metallic antiferromagnets with broken inversion symmetry on the two sublattices, strong spin-orbit coupling and high Néel temperatures offer new opportunities for applications in spintronics. Especially Mn$_{2}$Au, with high Néel temperature and conductivity, is particularly interesting for real-world applications. Here, manipulation of the orientation of the staggered magnetization,\textit{\ i.e.} the Néel vector, by current pulses has been recently demonstrated, with the read-out limited to studies of anisotropic magnetoresistance or X-ray magnetic linear dichroism. Here, we report on the in…
A strong electronic reconstruction resulting in a quenching of the Fe magnetic moments has recently been predicted to be at the origin of the giant magnetocaloric effect displayed by Fe2Pbased materials. To verify this scenario, X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism experiments have been carried out at the L edges of Mn and Fe for two typical compositions of the (Mn,Fe)2(P,Si,B) system. The dichroic absorption spectra of Mn and Fe have been measured element specific in the vicinity of the first-order ferromagnetic transition. The experimental spectra are compared with first-principle calculations …
Pulsed field magnetization experiments extend the typical metamagnetic staircase of CuFeO2 up to 58 T to reveal an additional first order phase transition at high field for both the parallel and perpendicular field configuration. Virtually complete isotropic behavior is retrieved only above this transition, indicating the high-field recovery of the undistorted triangular lattice. A consistent phenomenological rationalization for the field dependence and metamagnetism crossover of the system is provided, demonstrating the importance of both spin-phonon coupling and a small field-dependent easy-…
The magnetic phase diagram of CuFeO2 as a function of applied magnetic field and temperature is thoroughly explored and expanded, both for magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the material's c-axis. Pulsed field magnetization measurements extend the typical magnetic staircase of CuFeO2 at various temperatures, demonstrating the persistence of the recently discovered high field metamagnetic transition up to Tn2 ~ 11 K in both field configurations. An extension of the previously introduced phenomenological spin model used to describe the high field magnetization process (Phys. R…
Elucidating the interaction between magnetic moments and itinerant carriers is an important step to spintronic applications. Here, we investigate magnetic and transport properties in d0 ferromagnetic SiC single crystals prepared by postimplantation pulsed laser annealing. Magnetic moments are contributed by the p states of carbon atoms, but their magnetic circular dichroism is different from that in semi-insulating SiC samples. The anomalous Hall effect and negative magnetoresistance indicate the influence of d0 spin order on free carriers. The ferromagnetism is relatively weak in N-implanted …
Based on a quantum dissipation theory of open systems, we present a theoretical study of slow dynamics of magnetization for the ordered state of the new molecule-based magnetic complex [Mn(hfac)_{2}BNO_{H}] composed from antiferromagnetically coupled ferrimagnetic (5/2,1) spin chains. Experimental investigations of the magnetization process in pulsed fields have shown that this compound exhibits a metamagnetic AF-FI transition at a critical field in the order of the interchain coupling. A strong frequency dependence for the ac-susceptibility has been revealed in the vicinity of the AF-FI trans…
High-quality (001)-oriented (pseudo-cubic notation) ferromagnetic YTiO$_3$ thin films were epitaxially synthesized in a layer-by-layer way by pulsed laser deposition. Structural, magnetic and electronic properties were characterized by reflection-high-energy-electron-diffraction, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, and element-resolved resonant soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. To reveal ferromagnetism of the constituent titanium ions, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy was carried out using four detection modes probing complimentary spatial scale, which overcomes a…
The inverse magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in Ni-Mn-based Heusler compounds occurs during the magnetostructural transition between low-temperature, low-magnetization martensite and high-temperature, high-magnetization austenite. In this study, we analyze the metamagnetic transformation of a $Ni_{49.8}Mn_{35}In_{15.2}$ compound by simultaneous adiabatic temperature change and strain measurements in pulsed magnetic fields up to 10 T. We observe an adiabatic temperature change of -10 K and a strain of -0.22 % when the reverse martensitic transition is fully induced at a starting temperature of 285 K…

Single phase (001)-oriented BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition can only be obtained in a narrow window of deposition pressure and temperature and have a low magnetic moment. Out of the stability window Fe- or Bi-rich impurity phases form, which has a strong impact on the physical and structural properties of the films, even for impurity concentrations hardly detectable by standard X-ray diffraction measurements. By using more sensitive tools such as X-Ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and performing advanced X-ray diffraction characterizati…
Room temperature ferromagnetism was characterized for thin films of SrTi$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$O$_{3-δ}$ grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO$_{3}$ and Si substrates under different oxygen pressures and after annealing under oxygen and vacuum conditions. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism demonstrated that the magnetization originated from Fe$^{2+}$ cations, whereas Fe$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ did not contribute. Films with the highest magnetic moment (0.8 μB per Fe) had the highest measured Fe$^{2+}$:Fe${^3+}$ ratio of 0.1 corresponding to the largest concentration of oxygen vacancies (δ = 0.19). …
We carried out x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy and investigated cation valence states and spin and orbital magnetic moments in the inverse-spinel ferrimagnet Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{2+y}$O$_{4-z}$ (NCO) epitaxial films with the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We show that the oxygen pressure P$_{O2}$ during the film growth by pulsed laser deposition influences not only the cation stoichiometry (site-occupation) but also the cation valence state. Our XAS results show that the Ni in the O$_{h}$-site is in the intermediate valence state betw…
The layers of a high-temperature novel GaAs:Fe diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) with an average Fe content up to 20 at. % were grown on (001) i-GaAs substrates using a pulsed laser deposition in a vacuum. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy investigations revealed that the conductive layers obtained at 180 and 200 C are epitaxial, do not contain any second-phase inclusions, but contain the Fe-enriched columnar regions of overlapped microtwins. The TEM investigations of the non-conductive layer obtained at 250 C revealed the embedded coherent …
