In this paper, we determine the harvested power region of a two-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless power transfer (WPT) system for a non-linear model of the rectennas at the energy harvester (EH) nodes. To this end, we characterize the distributions of the transmit symbol vector that achieve individual points on the boundary of this region. Each distribution is obtained as solution of an optimization problem where we maximize a weighted sum of the average harvested powers at the EH nodes under a constraint on the power budget of the transmitter. We prove that the optimal transmit strategy employs two beamforming vectors and scalar unit norm transmit symbols with arbitrary phase. To determine the beamforming vectors, we propose an iterative algorithm based on a two-dimensional grid search, semi-definite relaxation, and successive convex approximation. Our numerical results reveal that the proposed design outperforms two baseline schemes based on a linear EH model and a single beamforming vector, respectively. Finally, we observe that the harvested power region is convex and the power harvested at one EH node can be traded for a higher harvested power at the other node.
In this paper, we study multi-user multi-antenna wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, where each antenna at the energy harvesting (EH) nodes is connected to a dedicated non-linear rectifier. We propose an optimal transmit strategy which maximizes a weighted sum of the average harvested powers at the EH nodes under a constraint on the power budget of the transmitter. First, for multiple-input single-output (MISO) WPT systems, we show that it is optimal to transmit scalar symbols with an arbitrary phase and an amplitude, whose probability density function (pdf) has at most two mass points, usi…
In this paper, we study multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, where the energy harvester (EH) node is equipped with multiple nonlinear rectennas. We characterize the optimal transmit strategy by the optimal distribution of the transmit symbol vector that maximizes the average harvested power at the EH subject to a constraint on the power budget of the transmitter. We show that the optimal transmit strategy employs scalar unit-norm input symbols with arbitrary phase and two beamforming vectors, which are determined as solutions of a non-convex optimization…
The extremely low efficiency is regarded as the bottleneck of Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technology. To achieve a good tradeoff between the consumed power and the harvested power, a robust resource optimization problem is studied in a multiple-input single-output cognitive radio network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer under imperfect channel state information. Unlike most of the existing works that assume an ideal linear energy harvesting (EH) model, we assume two practical non-linear EH models. In order to solve the resulting challenging non-convex problem, we propose an algorithm based on successive convex approximation and prove that a rank-one solution is obtaine…
The convex property of a nonlinear wireless power transfer (WPT) is characterized in this work. Following a nonlinear energy harvesting model, we express the relationship between the harvested direct current (DC) power and the power of the received radio-frequency signal via an implicit function, based on which the convex property is further proved. In particular, for a predefined rectifier's input signal distribution, we show that the harvested DC power of the nonlinear model is convex in the reciprocal of the rectifier's input signal power. Finally, we provide an example to show the advantag…

A new line of research on communications and signals design for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) has recently emerged in the communication literature. Promising signal strategies to maximize the power transfer efficiency of WPT rely on (energy) beamforming, waveform, modulation and transmit diversity, and a combination thereof. To a great extent, the study of those strategies has so far been limited to theoretical performance analysis. In this paper, we study the real over-the-air performance of all the aforementioned signal strategies for WPT. To that end, we have designed, prototyped and experi…
This letter investigates the employment of vector-perturbation (VP) precoding to convey simultaneously information and energy in multiple-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) downlink channel. We show that the conventional VP in addition to the information capacity benefits that provides to linear channel inversion techniques, it enhances the harvested energy at the receivers due to the extended symbol constellation. To further boost harvesting performance, the proposed modified VP technique (named VP-EH) designs the VP integer offsets in order to maximize the delivered power. The propo…
Far-field Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) has attracted significant attention in recent years. Despite the rapid progress, the emphasis of the research community in the last decade has remained largely concentrated on improving the design of energy harvester (so-called rectenna) and has left aside the effect of transmitter design. In this paper, we study the design of transmit waveform so as to enhance the DC power at the output of the rectenna. We derive a tractable model of the non-linearity of the rectenna and compare with a linear model conventionally used in the literature. We then use thos…

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a viable source of energy for wirelessly powered communication networks (WPCNs). In this paper, we first consider WPT from an energy access point (E-AP) to multiple energy receivers (E-Rs) to obtain the optimal policy that maximizes the WPT efficiency. For this purpose, we formulate the problem of maximizing the total average received power of the E-Rs subject to the average and peak power level constraints of the E-AP. The formulated problem is a non-convex stochastic optimization problem. Using some stochastic optimization techniques, we tackle the challenges…
Wireless power transfer (WPT) using energy beamforming is a promising solution for low power Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In this work, we consider WPT from an energy transmitter (ET) employing retrodirective WPT using a large phased antenna array to an energy receiver (ER) capable of ambient backscatter. The advantage of retrodirective WPT is that no explicit channel estimation is needed at the ET and the use of ambient backscattering eliminates the need for active transmission at the ER. We propose a training sequence design, i.e., pattern of varying the reflection coefficient at the ER…

One of the key challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT) is to sustainably power the large number of IoT devices in real-time. In this paper, we consider a wireless power transfer (WPT) scenario between an energy transmitter (ET) capable of retrodirective WPT and an energy receiver (ER) capable of ambient backscatter in the presence of an ambient source (AS). The ER requests WPT by backscattering signals from an AS towards the ET, which then retrodirectively beamforms an energy signal towards the ER. Federated edge learning (FEEL) is a widely adopted framework for training an artificial intelligence (AI) model distributively at edge devices to leverage their data while preserving their data privacy. The execution of a power-hungry learning task at energy-constrained devices is a key challenge confronting the implementation of FEEL. To tackle the challenge, we propose the solution of powering devices using wireless power transfer (WPT). To derive guidelines on deploying the resultant wirelessly powered FEEL (WP-FEEL) system, this work aims at the derivation of the tradeoff between the model…
We study the effect of channel fading in Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) and show that fading enhances the RFto- DC conversion efficiency of nonlinear RF energy harvesters. We then develop a new form of signal design for WPT, denoted as Transmit Diversity, that relies on multiple dumb antennas at the transmitter to induce fast fluctuations of the wireless channel. Those fluctuations boost the RF-to-DC conversion efficiency thanks to the energy harvester nonlinearity. In contrast with (energy) beamforming, Transmit Diversity does not rely on Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) and…

The dual use of radio signals for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has recently drawn significant attention. To meet the practical requirement that energy receivers (ERs) operate with significantly higher received power as compared to information receivers (IRs), ERs need to be deployed in more proximity to the transmitter than IRs. However, due to the broadcast nature of wireless channels, one critical issue arises that the messages sent to IRs can be eavesdropped by ERs, which possess better channels from the transmitter. In this paper, we address this new secrecy…

A significant challenge regarding the studied WPT scenario is the time-varying nature…

In this paper, we consider a wireless powered communication system, where an energy harvesting (EH) node harvests energy from a radio frequency (RF) signal broadcasted by an access point (AP) in the downlink (DL). The node stores the harvested energy in an energy buffer and uses the stored energy to transmit data to the AP in the uplink (UL). We investigate two simple online transmission policies for the EH node, namely a best-effort policy and an on-off policy, which do not require knowledge of the EH profile nor channel knowledge. In particular, for both policies, the EH node transmits in ea…
