Outage Probability Expressions for an IRS-Assisted System with and without Source-Destination Link for the Case of Quantized Phase Shifts in $κ-μ$ fading
In this work, we study the outage probability (OP) at the destination of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted communication system in a $κ-μ$ fading environment. A practical system model that takes into account the presence of phase error due to quantization at the IRS when a) source-destination (SD) link is present and b) SD link is absent is considered. First, an exact expression is derived, and then we derive three simple approximations for the OP using the following approaches: (i) uni-variate dimension reduction, (ii) moment matching and, (iii) Kullback-Leibler divergence minimization. The resulting expressions for OP are simple to evaluate and quite tight even in the tail region. The validity of these approximations is demonstrated using extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We also study the impact of the number of bits available for quantization, the position of IRS with respect to the source and destination and the number of IRS elements on the OP for systems with and without an SD link.
Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are promising enablers for high-capacity wireless communication systems by constructing favorable channels between the transmitter and receiver. However, general, accurate, and tractable outage analysis for IRS-aided multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems is not available in the literature. In this paper, we first characterize the mutual information (MI) of IRS-aided MIMO systems by capitalizing on large random matrix theory (RMT). Based on this result, a closed-form approximation for the outage probability is derived and a gradient-based algorithm…
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is envisioned to be a promising solution for designing spectral and energy efficient wireless systems. In this letter, we study a multi-IRS-assisted system under Rician fading where the phase shifts adapt to only the line of sight (LoS) components. First, we analyze and optimize the outage probability of the multi-IRS-assisted system in the slow fading scenario for the non-LoS (NLoS) components. We also show that the optimal outage probability decreases with the numbers of IRSs and elements of each IRS when the LoS components are stronger than the NLoS ones…
This paper investigates the impact of spatial channel correlation on the outage probability of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted single-input single-output (SISO) communication systems. In particular, we derive a novel closed-form expression of the outage probability for arbitrary phase shifts and correlation matrices of the indirect channels. To shed light on the impact of the spatial correlation, we further attain the closed-form expressions for two common scenarios met in the literature when the large-scale fading coefficients are expressed by the loss over a propagation distanc…
In this letter, we study the outage probability of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted full duplex two-way communication systems, which characterizes the performance of overcoming the transmitted data loss caused by long deep fades. To this end, we first derive the probability distribution of the cascaded end-to-end equivalent channel with an arbitrarily given IRS beamformer. Our analysis shows that deriving such probability distribution in the considered case is more challenging than the case with the phase-matched IRS beamformer. Then, with the derived probability distribution of t…
In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) uplink, in which a group of the surface reflecting elements are configured to boost the signal of one of the user equipments (UEs), while the remaining elements are used to boost the other UE. By approximating the received powers as Gamma random variables, tractable expressions for the outage probability under NOMA interference cancellation are obtained. We evaluate the outage over different splits of the elements and varying pathloss differences betwee…
In this paper, we study using Destination Artificial Noise (DAN) besides Source Artificial Noise (SAN) to enhance physical layer secrecy with an outage probability based approach. It is assumed that all nodes in the network (i.e. source, destination and eavesdropper) are equipped with multiple antennas. In addition, the eavesdropper is passive and its channel state and location are unknown at the source and destination. In our proposed scheme, by optimized allocation of power to the SAN, DAN and data signal, a minimum value for the outage probability is guaranteed at the eavesdropper, and at t…
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology to enhance the coverage and performance of wireless networks. We consider the application of IRS to non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), where a base station transmits superposed signals to multiple users by the virtue of an IRS. The performance of an IRS-assisted NOMA networks with imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) and perfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC) is investigated by invoking 1-bit coding scheme. In particular, we derive new exact and asymptotic expressions for both outage probability a…
We study the physical-layer security of a multiple source-destination (SD) pairs coexisting wireless network in the face of an eavesdropper, where an eavesdropper intends to wiretap the signal transmitted by the SD pairs. In order to protect the wireless transmission against eavesdropping, we propose a cooperation framework relying on two stages. Specifically, an SD pair is selected to access the total allocated spectrum using an appropriately designed scheme at the beginning of the first stage. The other source nodes (SNs) simultaneously transmit their data to the SN of the above-mentioned SD…
In intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless communication systems, channel state information (CSI) is crucial to achieve its promising passive beamforming gains. However, CSI errors are inevitable in practice and generally correlated over the IRS reflecting elements due to the limited training with discrete phase shifts, which degrade the data transmission rate and reliability. In this paper, we focus on investigating the effect of CSI errors to the outage performance in an IRS-aided multiuser downlink communication system. Specifically, we aim to jointly optimize the active transmi…
The intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technique to extend the wireless coverage. In this letter, the performance of hybrid automatic repeat request (hybrid-ARQ) for an IRS-assisted system is analyzed. More specifically, the outage performance of the IRS-aided system using hybrid-ARQ protocol with chase combining is studied. Asymptotic analysis also shows that the outage performance improves better than linearly by increasing number of reflectors of the IRS-aided system. The results also verify the potential of combining the ARQ scheme in the link layer of the IRS-aided system…
We consider a wireless communication system, where a transmitting source is assisted by both a reconfigurable intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and a decode-and-forward half-duplex relay (hybrid IRS-relay scheme) to communicate with a destination receiver. All devices are equipped with multiple antennas, and transmissions occur in two stages. In stage 1, the source splits the transmit message into two sub-messages, transmitted to the destination and the relay, respectively, using block diagonalization to avoid interference. Both transmissions will benefit from the IRS. In stage 2, the relay…
In this paper, we analyze the performance of cooperative transmissions in wireless ad hoc networks with random node locations. According to a contention probability for message transmission, each source node can either transmits its own message signal or acts as a potential relay for others. Hence, each destination node can potentially receive two copies of the message signal, one from the direct link and the other from the relay link. Taking the random node locations and interference into account, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability with different combining schemes at…
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has the potential to significantly enhance the network performance by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environments. It is however difficult to obtain the accurate downlink channel state information (CSI) for efficient beamforming design in IRS-aided wireless networks. In this article, we consider an IRS-aided downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) network, where the base station (BS) is not required to know the underlying channel distribution. We formulate an outage probability minimization problem by jointly optimizing the beamforming vector a…
In this paper, we study the performance of an energy efficient wireless communication system, assisted by a finite-element-intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). With no instantaneous channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter, we characterize the system performance in terms of the outage probability (OP) of energy efficiency (EE). Depending upon the availability of line-of-sight (LOS) paths, we analyze the system for two different channel models, viz. Rician and Rayleigh. For an arbitrary number of IRS elements $(N)$, we derive the approximate closed-form solutions for the OP of EE, us…
In this paper, we propose a robust secrecy transmission scheme for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided communication systems. Different from all the existing works where IRS has already been deployed at a fixed location, we take the location of IRS as a variable to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) under the outage probability constraint by jointly optimizing the location of IRS, transmit beamformer and IRS phase shifts with imperfect channel state information (CSI) of Eve, where we consider two cases: a) the location of Eve is known; b) only a suspicious area of Eve is available. We show …
We consider a Gaussian MISO wiretap channel, where a multi-antenna source communicates with a single-antenna destination in the presence of a single-antenna eavesdropper. The communication is assisted by multi-antenna helpers that act as jammers to the eavesdropper. Each helper independently transmits noise which lies in the null space of the channel to the destination, thus creates no interference to the destination. Under the assumption that there is eavesdropper channel uncertainty, we derive the optimal covariance matrix for the source signal so that the secrecy rate is maximized subject t…
In this paper, we consider a relay-assisted uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system where two radio frequency (RF) users are grouped for simultaneous transmission, over each resource block, to an intermediate relay which forwards the amplified version of the users' aggregated signals in the presence of multiuser interference to a relatively far destination. In order to cope with the users' ever-increasing desire for higher data rates, a high-throughput free-space optics (FSO) link is employed as the relay-destination backhaul link. Dynamic-order decoding is employed at the destinat…
We analyze a secure dual-hop mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) downlink simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems. The FSO link and all RF links experience Gamma-Gamma, independent and identical Nakagami-$m$ fading, respectively. We analyze the effects of atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, detection technology, path loss, and energy harvesting on secrecy performance. Signal-to-noise ratios at both legitimate and illegitimate receivers are not independent since they are both simultaneously influenced by the FSO link. We derive the closed-form expr…
This letter investigates the uplink outage performance of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We consider the general case where all users have both direct and reflection links, and all links undergo Nakagami-m fading. We approximate the received powers of the NOMA users as Gamma random variables via moments matching. This allows for tractable expressions of the outage under interference cancellation (IC), while being flexible in modeling various propagation environments. Our analysis shows that under certain conditions, the presence of an IRS m…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is regarded as a candidate radio access technique for the next generation wireless networks because of its manifold spectral gains. A two-phase cooperative relaying strategy (CRS) is proposed in this paper by exploiting the concept of both downlink and uplink NOMA (termed as DU-CNOMA). In the proposed protocol, a transmitter considered as a source transmits a NOMA composite signal consisting of two symbols to the destination and relay during the first phase, following the principle of downlink NOMA. In the second phase, the relay forwards the symbol decode…
We design a new secure transmission scheme in the relay wiretap channel where a source communicates with a destination through a decode-and-forward relay in the presence of spatially random-distributed eavesdroppers. For the sake of practicality, we consider a general antenna configuration in which the source, relay, destination, and eavesdroppers are equipped with multiple antennas. In order to confuse the eavesdroppers, we assume that both the source and the relay transmit artificial noise signals in addition to information signals. We first derive a closed-form expression for the transmissi…
In this work, we characterize the outage probability (OP) of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-user multiple-input-single-output (MU-MISO) communication system. Using a two-step approximation method, we approximate the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for any downlink user by a Log-Normal random variable. The impact of various system parameters is studied using the closed-form expression of OP. It is concluded that the position of IRS has a critical role, but an appropriate increase in the number of IRS elements would help to compensate for the loss in perfor…
We evaluate the secrecy performance of a multiple access cooperative network where the destination node is wiretapped by a malicious and passive eavesdropper. We propose the application of the network coding technique as an alternative to increase the secrecy at the destination node, on the top of improving the error performance of the legitimate communication, already demonstrated in the literature. Network coding is leveraged by assuming that the legitime cooperative nodes are able to perform non-binary linear combinations of different frames before the transmission. Different scenarios with…
Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as an appealing technique that enables wireless communications with low hardware cost and low power consumption. In this letter, we consider an IRS-assisted point-to-point multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system, where a source communicates with its destination with the help of an IRS. Our goal is to maximize the spectral efficiency of this system by jointly optimizing the (active) precoding at the source and the (passive) phase shifters (PSs) at the IRS. However, this turns out to be an intractable mixed integer non-convex optimization…
This letter minimizes outage probability in a single decode-and-forward (DF) relay-assisted underwater acoustic network (UAN) without direct source-to-destination link availability. Specifically, a joint global-optimal design for relay positioning and allocating power to source and relay is proposed. For analytical insights, a novel low-complexity tight approximation method is also presented. Selected numerical results validate the analysis and quantify the comparative gains achieved using optimal power allocation (PA) and relay placement (RP) strategies.
In this paper, we deal with the problem of relay selection in mobile edge computing networks, where a source node transmits a computation-intensive task to a destination via the aid of multiple relay nodes. It differs from the traditional relay nodes in the way that each relay node is equipped with an edge computing server, thus each relay node can execute the received task and forwards the computed result to the destination. Accordingly, we define a delay outage probability to evaluate the impact of the relay computing ability on the link communications, and then propose a latency-best relay …
This paper investigates physical layer security (PLS) in the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted multiple-user uplink channel. Since the instantaneous eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) is unavailable, the secrecy rate can not be measured. In this case, existing investigations usually focus on the maximization of the minimum (max-min) of signal to interference plus noise power ratio (SINRs) among multiple users, and do not consider secrecy outage probability caused by eavesdroppers. In this paper, we first formulate the minimization of the maximum (min-max) secrecy outage…
Using fractional-calculus mathematics, a novel approach is introduced to rewrite modified Bessel functions in series form using simple elementary functions. Then, a statistical characterization of the total receive-SNR at the destination, corresponding to the source-relay-destination and the source-destination link SNR, is provided for a general relaying scenario, in which the destination exploits a maximum ratio combining (MRC) receiver. Using the novel statistical model for the total receive SNR at the destination, accurate and simple analytical expressions for the outage probability, the bi…
This work deals with the secrecy performance analysis of a dual-hop RF-FSO DF relaying network composed of a source, a relay, a destination, and an eavesdropper. We assume the eavesdropper is located close to the destination and overhears the relay's transmitted optical signal. The RF and FSO links undergo ($α$-$κ$-$μ$)-shadowed fading and unified Málaga turbulence with pointing error. The secrecy performance of the mixed system is studied by deriving closed-form analytical expressions of secure outage probability (SOP), strictly positive secrecy capacity (SPSC), and intercept probability (IP)…
This letter presents a detailed performance analysis of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided single-input single-output communication systems, taking into account of the direct link between the transmitter and receiver. A closed-form upper bound is derived for the ergodic capacity, and an accurate approximation is obtained for the outage probability. In addition, simplified expressions are presented in the asymptotic regime. Numerical results are provided to validate the correctness of the theoretical analysis. It is found that increasing the number of reflecting elements can signifi…
In this paper, we study vehicular communications (VCs) at intersections, in the presence of interference over Nakagami-m fading channels. The interference are originated from vehicles located on two perpendicular roads. We derive the outage probability, and closed forms are obtained. The outage probability is derived when the destination is on the road (vehicle, cyclist, pedestrian) or outside the road (base station, road side unit). We compare the performance of line of sight (LOS) scenarios and non-line of sight (NLOS) scenarios, and show that NLOS scenarios offer better performance than LOS…
This paper considers a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system where the relay is equipped with multiple antennas, while the source and the destination are equipped with a single antenna. Assuming that the relay is subjected to co-channel interference (CCI) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) while the destination is corrupted by AWGN only, we propose three heuristic relay precoding schemes to combat the CCI, namely, 1) Maximum ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission (MRC/MRT), 2) Zero-forcing/MRT (ZF/MRT), 3) Minimum mean-square error/MRT (MMSE/MRT). We derive new exact outa…
In this paper, we investigate the problem of pilot optimization and channel estimation of two-way relaying network (TWRN) aided by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) with finite discrete phase shifters. In a TWRN, there exists a challenging problem that the two cascading channels from source-to-IRS-to-Relay and destination-to-IRS-to-relay interfere with each other. Via designing the initial phase shifts of IRS and pilot pattern, the two cascading channels are separated by using simple arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction. Then, the least-squares estimator is adopted to esti…
We investigate underwater optical communication system that is relayed by a single decode-and-forward (DF) relay through an exponential-generalized Gamma distribution (EGG) into a final destination. Specifically, a certain terminal device sends data through underwater wireless optical link (UWO) that utilizes the so-called blue laser technology into a nearby relay that in term sends a decoded (and modulated) version of the received signal into a remote destination. The RF link is assumed to follow the generalized $α-μ$ distribution; which include many distributions as a special cases, e.g., Ra…
This paper studies the outage probability minimization problem for a multiple relay network with energy harvesting constraints. The relays are hybrid nodes used for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer from the source radio frequency (RF) signals. There is a trade-off associated with the amount of time a relay node is used for energy and information transfer. Large intervals of information transfer implies little time for energy harvesting from RF signals and thus, high probability of outage events. We propose relay selection schemes for a cooperative system with a fixed number…
This paper investigates the outage performance of overhearing amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative relaying, where a source transmits information to its destination through multiple helping overhearing AF relays with space-time network coding (STNC) employed. Firstly, the transmission protocol of such a relaying system, i.e., cooperative relaying with overhearing AF relays based on STNC (STNC-OHAF) is presented. Then, the instantaneous end-to-end SNR expression of STNC-OHAF is analysed. Based on this, an explicit expression of the outage probability for STNC-OHAF over independent but not neces…
This paper investigates the outage probability and the throughput of relay networks with wireless information and energy transfer where the relays harvest energy from the transmitted radio-frequency signal of the source. Considering different power consumption models, we derive the outage probability for both adaptive and non-adaptive power allocations at the relay. With a total energy consumption constraint at the source, we provide closed-form expressions for the optimal time sharing and power allocation between the source energy and information transfer signals as well as the optimal relay …
Intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) are invoked for improving both spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Specifically, an IRS-aided multiple-input multiple-output network is considered, where the performance of randomly roaming users is analyzed by utilizing stochastic geometry tools. As such, to distinguish the superposed signals at each user, the passive beamforming weight at the IRSs and detection weight vectors at the users are jointly designed. As a benefit, by adopting a zero-forcing-based design, the intra-cell interference imposed by the IRS can be suppressed. In orde…
Cooperative relaying improves the performance of wireless networks by forming a network of multiple independent virtual sources transmitting the same information as the source node. However, interference induced in the network reduces the performance of cooperative communications. In this work the statistical properties, the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the probability density function (PDF) for a basic dual hop cooperative relay network with an arbitrary number of interferers over Rayleigh fading channels are derived. Two system models are considered: in the first system model, …
This paper studies an untrusted relay channel, in which the destination sends artificial noise simultaneously with the source sending a message to the relay, in order to protect the source's confidential message. The traditional amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme shows poor performance in this situation because of the interference power dilemma: providing better security by using stronger artificial noise will decrease the confidential message power from the relay to the destination. To solve this problem, a modulo-and-forward (MF) operation at the relay with nested lattice encoding at the source…
Physical-layer security is emerging as a promising paradigm of securing wireless communications against eavesdropping between legitimate users, when the main link spanning from source to destination has better propagation conditions than the wiretap link from source to eavesdropper. In this paper, we identify and analyze the tradeoffs between the security and reliability of wireless communications in the presence of eavesdropping attacks. Typically, the reliability of the main link can be improved by increasing the source's transmit power (or decreasing its date rate) to reduce the outage prob…
In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is introduced to assist an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication system based on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for serving multiple ground users. We aim to minimize the average total system energy consumption by jointly designing the resource allocation strategy, the three dimensional (3D) trajectory of the UAV, as well as the phase control at the IRS. The design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem taking into account the maximum tolerable outage probability constraint and the individual minimum data rate requi…
This work deals with the physical layer security performance of a dual-hop underwater optical communication (UOWC)-radio frequency (RF) network under the intruding attempts of multiple eavesdroppers via RF links. The intermediate decode and forward relay node between the underwater source and the destination transforms the optical signal into electrical form and re-transmits it to the destination node with the help of harvested energy by the relay from an integrated power beacon within the system. The source-to-relay link (UOWC) follows a mixture exponential generalized Gamma turbulence with p…
We propose a secure transmission scheme for a relay wiretap channel, where a source communicates with a destination via a decode-and-forward relay in the presence of spatially random-distributed eavesdroppers. We assume that the source is equipped with multiple antennas, whereas the relay, the destination, and the eavesdroppers are equipped with a single antenna each. In the proposed scheme, in addition to information signals, the source transmits artificial noise signals in order to confuse the eavesdroppers. In this paper, we examine the outage performance of a cognitive relay network, which is comprised of a secondary transmitter (ST), multiple decode-and-forward (DF) relays and a secondary destination (SD). We propose a multi-relay selection scheme for the cognitive relay network, where multiple relays are selected and used to participate in forwarding the secondary transmission from ST to SD. A closed-form expression of the outage probability for the proposed multi-relay selection under imperfect spectrum sensing is derived in Rayleigh fading environments. For comparison purposes, the conventio…
The use of cognitive relays is an emerging and promising solution to overcome the problem of spectrum underutilization while achieving the spatial diversity. In this paper, we perform an outage analysis of the secondary system with amplify-and-forward relays in a spectrum sharing scenario, where a secondary transmitter communicates with a secondary destination over a direct link as well as the best relay. Specifically, under the peak power constraint, we derive a closed-form expression of the secondary outage probability provided that the primary outage probability remains below a predefined v…
In this paper, with the help of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), the source (S) and destination (D) exchange information through the two-way decode-and-forward relay (TW-DFR). We mainly focus on the phase optimization of IRS to improve the system rate performance. Firstly, a maximizing receive power sum (Max-RPS) method is proposed via eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) with an appreciable rate enhancement, which is called Max-RPS-EVD. To further achieve a higher rate, a method of maximizing minimum rate (Max-Min-R) is proposed with high complexity. To reduce its complexity, a low-complexi…
We design the phase shifts of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted single-input-multiple-output communication system to minimize the outage probability (OP) and to maximize the ergodic rate. Our phase shifts design uses only statistical channel state information since these depend only on the large-scale fading coefficients; the obtained phase shift design remains valid for a longer time frame. We further assume that one has access to only quantized phase values. The closed-form expressions for OP and ergodic rate are derived for the considered system. Next, two optimization proble…

The paper studies the problem of designing the Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) phase shifters for Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) communication systems in spatiotemporally correlated channel environments, where the destination can move within a confined area. The objective is to maximize the expected sum of SNRs at the receiver over infinite time horizons. The problem formulation gives rise to a Markov Decision Process (MDP). We propose a deep actor-critic algorithm that accounts for channel correlations and destination motion by constructing the state representation to include the cu…

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently attracted a spurt of interest due to its innate advantages over Massive MIMO on power consumption. In this paper, we study the outage performance of multi-RIS system with the help of hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) to improve the RIS system reliability, where the destination received channels are modeled by Rician fading and the phase shift setting only depends on the line-of-sight (LoS) component. Both the exact and asymptotic outage probabilities under Type-I HARQ and HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC) schemes are derived. Particu…
We consider a cooperative wireless network comprised of a source, a destination and multiple relays operating in the presence of an eavesdropper, which attempts to tap the source-destination transmission. We propose multi-relay selection scheme for protecting the source against eavesdropping. More specifically, multi-relay selection allows multiple relays to simultaneously forward the source's transmission to the destination, differing from the conventional single-relay selection where only the best relay is chosen to assist the transmission from the source to destination. For the purpose of c…
The employment of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) is a potential and promising solution to increase the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communication networks. Despite their many advantages, IRS-aided communications have limitations as they are subject to high propagation losses. To overcome this, the phase rotation (shift) at each element needs to be designed in such a way as to increase the channel gain at the destination. However, this increases the system's complexity as well as its power consumption. In this paper, we present an analytical framework for the performance o…
We consider a spectrum sharing scenario, where a secondary network coexists with a primary network of multiple transceivers. The secondary network consists of an energy-constrained decode-and-forward secondary relay which assists the communication between a secondary transmitter and a destination in the presence of the interference from multiple primary transmitters. The secondary relay harvests energy from the received radio-frequency signals, which include the information signal from the secondary transmitter and the primary interference. The harvested energy is then used to decode the secon…
This article examines the secrecy coding aided wireless communications from a source to a destination in the presence of an eavesdropper from a security-reliability tradeoff (SRT) perspective. Explicitly, the security is quantified in terms of the intercept probability experienced at the eavesdropper, while the outage probability encountered at the destination is used to measure the transmission reliability. We characterize the SRT of conventional direct transmission from the source to the destination and show that if the outage probability is increased, the intercept probability decreases, an…
In this work, we consider a multiuser cooperative wireless network where the energy-constrained sources have independent information to transmit to a common destination, which is assumed to be externally powered and responsible for transferring energy wirelessly to the sources. The source nodes may cooperate, under either decode-and-forward or network coding-based protocols. Taking into account the fact that the energy harvested by the source nodes is a function of the fading realization of inter-user channels and user-destination channels, we obtain a closed-form approximation for the system …
Energy harvesting (EH) cognitive relays are an exciting solution to the problem of inefficient use of spectrum while achieving green communications and spatial diversity. In a spectrum sharing scenario, we investigate the performance of a cognitive relay network, where a secondary source communicates with its destination over Nakagami-$m$ channels via decode-and-forward EH relays while maintaining the outage probability of the primary user below a predefined threshold. Specifically, we derive a closed-form expression for the secondary outage probability and show that it is a function of the pr…
An opportunistic DF-AF selection relaying scheme with maximal received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination is investigated in this paper. We perform asymptotic analysis of the outage probability in high SNR domain. The coding gain and the diversity order are obtained. For the purpose of comparison, the asymptotic analysis of opportunistic AF scheme in Nakagami-m fading channels is also performed by using the Squeeze Theorem.…
