Relic neutrinos from the Big Bang decoupled from the hot plasma predominantly in helicity eigenstates. Their subsequent propagation through gravitational inhomogeneities of the Universe alters the helicities of both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos, thus providing an independent probe of the evolving universe. We determine here the probability that relic neutrinos flip their helicity, in terms of the spectrum of density inhomogeneities measured in the Cosmic Microwave Background. As we find, for Dirac neutrinos the gravitational helicity modifications are intermediate between the effects of magnetic fields if the neutrino magnetic moment is of the magnitude predicted in the Standard Model and the much larger effects if the magnetic moment is of the scale consistent with the excess of low energy electron events seen by the XENON1T experiment. We give succinct derivations, within general relativity, of the semi-classical response of a spinning particle to a weak gravitational field in an expanding universe, and estimate the helicity modifications of neutrinos emitted by the Sun caused by the Sun's gravity.
Since decoupling in the early universe in helicity states, primordial neutrinos propagating in astrophysical magnetic fields precess and undergo helicity changes. In view of the XENON1T experiment possibly finding a large magnetic moment of solar neutrinos, we estimate the helicity flipping for relic neutrinos in both cosmic and galactic magnetic fields. The flipping probability is sensitive both to the neutrino magnetic moment and the structure of the magnetic fields, thus potentially a probe of the fields. As we find, even a magnetic moment well below that suggested by XENON1T could signific…
The new element of theory of galaxy formation, strong primordial inhomogeneities, is shown to be a reflection of unstable large scale structures of topological defects, created in second order phase transitions in the inflationary Universe. In addition to {\it archioles-like} large scale correlation of the primordial inhomogeneity of energy density of coherent scalar field oscillations, the same mechanism, based on the second order phase transitions on the inflational stage and the domain wall formation upon the end of inflation, leads to the formation of massive black hole clusters that can s…
Most early Universe scenarios predict negligible magnetic fields on cosmological scales if they are unprocessed during subsequent expansion of the Universe. We present a new numerical treatment of the evolution of primordial fields and apply it to weakly helical seeds as they occur in certain early Universe scenarios. We find that initial helicities not much larger than the baryon to photon number can lead to fields of about 10^{-13} Gauss with coherence scales slightly below a kilo-parsec today.
We study cosmological density fluctuations within a covariant and gauge-invariant fluid-flow approach for a perfect fluid in the Einstein-Cartan gravity and derive the corresponding Raychaudhuri type of inhomogeneous coupled differential evolution equations of the second order. It appears that the quantum fluctuations of spin trigger primordial density inhomogeneities at the scale of weak interactions. These inhomogeneities are then evolved precisely to the value measured be COBE mission at the scale of decoupling.

The lightest supersymmetric particle, most likely the neutralino, might account for a large fraction of dark matter in the Universe. We show that the primordial spectrum of density fluctuations in neutralino cold dark matter (CDM) has a sharp cut-off due to two damping mechanisms: collisional damping during the kinetic decoupling of the neutralinos at O(10 MeV) and free streaming after last scattering of neutralinos. The cut-off in the primordial spectrum defines a minimal mass for CDM objects in hierarchical structure formation. For typical neutralino and sfermion masses the first gravitation…
The cosmological QCD transition affects primordial density perturbations. If the QCD transition is first order, the sound speed vanishes during the transition and density perturbations fall freely. For scales below the Hubble radius at the transition the primordial Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum of density fluctuations develops large peaks and dips. These peaks grow with wave number for both the hadron-photon-lepton fluid and for cold dark matter. At the horizon scale the enhancement is small. This by itself does not lead to the formation of black holes at the QCD transition. The peaks in the ha…
The standard cosmological model determined from the accurate cosmic microwave background measurements made by the Planck satellite implies a value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ that is $4.2$ standard deviations lower than the one determined from Type Ia supernovae. The Planck best fit model also predicts higher values of the matter density fraction $Ω_m$ and clustering amplitude $S_8$ compared to those obtained from the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 data. Here we show that accounting for the enhanced recombination rate due to additional small-scale inhomogeneities in the baryon density may solve bo…
By making use of a simple model that captures the key features of the anomalous Maxwell equations, we study the role of inhomogeneities on the evolution of magnetic fields in a chiral plasma. We find that inhomogeneities of the chiral asymmetry by themselves do not prevent the anomaly-driven inverse cascade and, as in the homogeneous case, the magnetic helicity is transferred from shorter to longer wavelength helical modes of the magnetic field. However, we also find that the evolution appears to be sensitive to the effects of diffusion. In the case when diffusion is negligible, the inverse ca…
We study the dynamics of the quark-hadron transition for a scenario in which the Universe is matter dominated and a large amount of entropy is generated by decaying particles of mass 1--10 TeV, as suggested by a large class of superstring--inspired models. We estimate the nucleation rate and compute the mean separation between baryon fluctuations generated during the transition following their evolution up to the onset of primordial nucleosyntheisis.
Hadronic inhomogeneities are formed after the quark hadron phase transition. The nature of the phase transition dictates the nature of the inhomogeneities formed. Recently some scenarios of inhomogeneities have been discussed where the strange quarks are in excess over the up and down quarks. The hadronization of these quarks will give rise to a large density of hyperons and kaons in addition to the protons and neutrons which are formed after the phase transition. These unstable hyperons decay into pions, muons and their respective neutrinos. Hence the plasma during this period consists of neu…
We analyze the effect of primordial density perturbations on the cosmic QCD phase transition. According to our results hadron bubbles nucleate at the cold perturbations. We call this mechanism inhomogeneous nucleation. We find the typical distance between bubble centers to be a few meters. This exceeds the estimates from homogeneous nucleation by two orders of magnitude. The resulting baryon inhomogeneities may affect primordial nucleosynthesis.

A formalism for describing an all-sky map of the polarization of the cosmic microwave background is presented. The polarization pattern on the sky can be decomposed into two geometrically distinct components. One of these components is not coupled to density inhomogeneities. A non-zero amplitude for this component of polarization can only be caused by tensor or vector metric perturbations. This allows unambiguous identification of long-wavelength gravity waves or large-scale vortical flows at the time of last scattering.
We propose a scenario in which a strong Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking in the early universe results in large inhomogeneities of the initial QCD axion field value, leading to the formation of very dense axion bubbles. Some of the axion bubbles subsequently collapse into primordial black holes (PBHs). The spatially homogeneous part of the QCD axion explains dark matter of the universe, while the PBHs arising from the axion bubbles can explain the LIGO events or the seed of supermassive black holes. Interestingly, the mass of PBH is determined by the axion decay constant; for $f_a = 10^{17}…
Inflation provides a natural mechanism to account for the origin of cosmic structures. The generation of primordial inhomogeneities during inflation can be understood via the spontaneous creation of quanta from the vacuum. We show that when the corresponding {\it stimulated} creation of quanta is considered, the characteristics of the state of the universe at the onset of inflation are not diluted by the inflationary expansion and can be imprinted in the spectrum of primordial inhomogeneities. The non-gaussianities (particularly in the so-called squeezed configuration) in the cosmic microwave …
We show that the presence of primordial stochastic (hypercharge) magnetic fields before the electroweak (EW) phase transition induces isocurvature fluctuations (baryon number inhomogeneities). Depending on the details of the magnetic field spectrum and on the particle physics parameters (such as the strength of the EW phase transition and electron Yukawa couplings) these fluctuations may survive until the Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). Their lenghtscale may exceed the neutron diffusion length at that time, while their magnitude can be so large that sizable antimatter domains are present. This…
In supergravity models, the evaporation of light Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) should be a source of gravitinos. By considering this process, new stringent limits are derived on the abundance of small black holes with initial masses less than 10^9 g. In minimal supergravity, the subsequent decay of evaporated gravitinos into cascades of non-equilibrium particles leads to the formation of elements whose abundance is constrained by observations. In gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models, their density is required not to overclose the Universe. As a result, cosmological models with substant…
Dark matter direct and indirect detection signals depend crucially on the dark matter distribution. While the formation of large scale structure is independent of the nature of the cold dark matter (CDM), the fate of inhomogeneities on sub-galactic scales, and hence the present day CDM distribution on these scales, depends on the micro-physics of the CDM particles. We study the density contrast of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) on sub-galactic scales. We calculate the damping of the primordial power spectrum due to collisional damping and free-streaming of WIMPy CDM and show that…
We present a mechanism for generating primordial magnetic fields with large correlation lengths on the order of 100 kpc today. The mechanism is based on recently conjectured QCD domain walls or similar CP violating domain walls with QCD scale structure. Such domain walls align the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the nucleons shortly after the QCD phase transition, producing electromagnetic fields correlated along the domain walls. Through the Kibble mechanism, the domain walls attain Hubble-scale correlations which they transfer to the aligned electromagnetic fields. Due to the CP viol…
It has been suggested that the overdense region as a result of inhomogeneities in the early Universe would have undergone a collapse into the primordial black holes(PBH). In this work, we discuss a possible constraint on the PBH formation in the radiation dominated epoch by imposing the generalized second law of thermodynamics in the context of spherically collapsing scenario. It is found that both the critical temperature $T_c$ over which the formation of PBH is not possible and the lower bound on the mass of PBH depend on the number of degrees of freedom at the time of PBH formation. In the …
A dark photon may kinetically mix with the Standard Model photon, leading to observable cosmological signatures. The mixing is resonantly enhanced when the dark photon mass matches the primordial plasma frequency, which depends sensitively on the underlying spatial distribution of electrons. Crucially, inhomogeneities in this distribution can have a significant impact on the nature of resonant conversions. We develop and describe, for the first time, a general analytic formalism to treat resonant oscillations in the presence of inhomogeneities. Our formalism follows from the theory of level cr…
We investigate a new mechanism for the cosmological QCD phase transition: inhomogeneous nucleation. The primordial temperature fluctuations, measured to be $δT/T \sim 10^{-5}$, are larger than the tiny temperature interval, in which bubbles would form in the standard picture of homogeneous nucleation. Thus the bubbles nucleate at cold spots. We find the typical distance between bubble centers to be a few meters. This exceeds the estimates from homogeneous nucleation by two orders of magnitude. The resulting baryon inhomogeneities may affect primordial nucleosynthesis.
The Hot Big Bang model predicts the existence of a \emph{cosmic neutrino background}. The number of particles and anti-particles in this primordial bath of neutrinos can be different -- a memory of processes that took place at very early epochs. If neutrinos were massless, this asymmetry would not change once neutrinos froze out. However, in the case of massive particles, the asymmetry is not protected by conservation laws and can get erased via helicity-flipping scatterings off matter inhomogeneities. We evaluate this helicity-flipping rate and demonstrate that if relic lepton asymmetry ever …
The primordial nucleosinthesys of the element can be influenced by the transitions of phase that take place after the Big Bang, such as the QCD transition. In order to study the effect of this phase transition, in this work we compute the time evolution of thermodynamical quantities of the early universe, focusing on temperature and energy density fluctuations, by solving the relevant equations of motion using as input the lattice QCD equation of state to describe the strongly interacting matter in the early universe plasma. We also study the effect of a primordial strong magnetic field by mea…

Several models of baryo(lepto)-genesis that give rise to large inhomogeneities in the composition of the universe are presented. In particular, a variation of primordial abundances of light elements by the factor 2-5 at large distances is predicted. A cosmological model of baryonic island is considered. Creation of domains with very large baryon and antibaryon number is described. Such domains mostly collapsed into primordial black holes that could be the dominant part of (non-standard) cosmological cold dark matter with a widely dispersed mass spectrum. A non-collapsed part of these bubbles m…
We analyze the generation of helical magnetic fields during preheating in a model of low-scale electroweak (EW) hybrid inflation. We show how the inhomogeneities in the Higgs field, resulting from tachyonic preheating after inflation, seed the magnetic fields in a way analogous to that predicted by Vachaspati and Cornwall in the context of the EW symmetry breaking. At this stage, the helical nature of the generated magnetic fields is linked to the non-trivial winding of the Higgs-field. We analyze non-perturbatively the evolution of these helical seeds through the highly non-linear stages of s…
We propose a model of inflation driven by the relaxation of an initially Planckian cosmological constant due to diffusion. The model can generate a (approximately) scale invariant spectrum of (adiabatic) primordial perturbations with the correct amplitudes and red tilt without an inflaton. The inhomogeneities observable in the CMB arise from those associated to the fundamental Planckian granularity that are imprinted into the standard model Higgs scalar fluctuations during the inflationary phase. The process admits a semiclassical interpretation and avoids the trans-Planckian problem of standa…

Anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) can be induced during the later stages of cosmic evolution, and in particular during and after the Epoch of Reionisation. Inhomogeneities in the ionised fraction, but also in the baryon density, in the velocity fields and in the gravitational potentials are expected to generate correlated CMB perturbations. We present a complete relativistic treatment of all these effects, up to second order in perturbation theory, that we solve using the numerical Boltzmann code SONG. The physical origin and relevance of all second order terms are carefull…
