We use the Tomita-Takesaki modular theory and the Kubo-Ando operator mean to write down a large class of multi-state quantum $f$-divergences and prove that they satisfy the data processing inequality. For two states, this class includes the $(α,z)$-Rényi divergences, the $f$-divergences of Petz, and the measures in \cite{matsumoto2015new} as special cases. The method used is the interpolation theory of non-commutative $L^p_ω$ spaces and the result applies to general von Neumann algebras including the local algebra of quantum field theory. We conjecture that these multi-state Rényi divergences have operational interpretations in terms of the optimal error probabilities in asymmetric multi-state quantum state discrimination.
Nonadditive (nonextensive) generalization of the quantum Kullback-Leibler divergence, termed the quantum q-divergence, is shown not to increase by projective measurements in an elementary manner.
Quantum f-divergences are a quantum generalization of the classical notion of f-divergences, and are a special case of Petz' quasi-entropies. Many well known distinguishability measures of quantum states are given by, or derived from, f-divergences; special examples include the quantum relative entropy, the Renyi relative entropies, and the Chernoff and Hoeffding measures. Here we show that the quantum f-divergences are monotonic under the dual of Schwarz maps whenever the defining function is operator convex. This extends and unifies all previously known monotonicity results. We also analyze …
The concept of classical $f$-divergences gives a unified framework to construct and study measures of dissimilarity of probability distributions; special cases include the relative entropy and the Rényi divergences. Various quantum versions of this concept, and more narrowly, the concept of Rényi divergences, have been introduced in the literature with applications in quantum information theory; most notably Petz' quasi-entropies (standard $f$-divergences), Matsumoto's maximal $f$-divergences, measured $f$-divergences, and sandwiched and $α$-$z$-Rényi divergences. In this paper we give a syste…
We characterize the functions for which the corresponding Bregman divergence is jointly convex on matrices. As an application of this characterization, we derive a sharp inequality for the quantum Tsallis entropy of a tripartite state, which can be considered as a generalization of the strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy. (In general, the strong subadditivity of the Tsallis entropy fails for quantum states, but it holds for classical states.) Furthermore, we show that the joint convexity of the Bregman divergence does not imply the monotonicity under stochastic maps, but every mono…
We show that Araki and Masuda's weighted non-commutative vector valued $L_p$-spaces [Araki \& Masuda, Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci., 18:339 (1982)] correspond to an algebraic generalization of the sandwiched Rényi divergences with parameter $α= \frac{p}{2}$. Using complex interpolation theory, we prove various fundamental properties of these divergences in the setup of von Neumann algebras, including a data-processing inequality and monotonicity in $α$. We thereby also give new proofs for the corresponding finite-dimensional properties. We discuss the limiting cases $α\to \{\frac{1}{2},1,\infty\…

The information spectrum approach gives general formulae for optimal rates of codes in many areas of information theory. In this paper the quantum spectral divergence rates are defined and properties of the rates are derived. The entropic rates, conditional entropic rates, and spectral mutual information rates are then defined in terms of the spectral divergence rates. Properties including subadditivity, chain rules, Araki-Lieb inequalities, and monotonicity are then explored.
The $α$-sandwiched Rényi divergence satisfies the data processing inequality, i.e. monotonicity under quantum operations, for $α\geq 1/2$. In this article, we derive a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for equality in the data processing inequality for the $α$-sandwiched Rényi divergence for all $α\geq 1/2$. For the range $α\in [1/2,1)$, our result provides the only condition for equality obtained thus far. To prove our result, we first consider the special case of partial trace, and derive a condition for equality based on the original proof of the data processing inequality by Fra…
The minimal memory required to model a given stochastic process - known as the statistical complexity - is a widely adopted quantifier of structure in complexity science. Here, we ask if quantum mechanics can fundamentally change the qualitative behaviour of this measure. We study this question in the context of the classical Ising spin chain. In this system, the statistical complexity is known to grow monotonically with temperature. We evaluate the spin chain's quantum mechanical statistical complexity by explicitly constructing its provably simplest quantum model, and demonstrate that this m…
Recently, it has been shown that for out-of-equilibrium systems, there are additional constraints on thermodynamical evolution besides the ordinary second law. These form a new family of second laws of thermodynamics, which are equivalent to the monotonicity of quantum Rényi divergences. In black hole thermodynamics, the usual second law is manifest as the area increase theorem. Hence one may ask if these additional laws imply new restrictions for gravitational dynamics, such as for out-of-equilibrium black holes? Inspired by this question, we study these constraints within the AdS/CFT corresp…
We experimentally demonstrate the non-monotonic dependence of genuine many-particle interference signals on the particles' mutual distinguishability. Our theoretical analysis shows that such non-monotonicity is a generic feature of the quantum to classical transition in multiparticle correlation functions of more than two particles.
