Image segmentation is a fundamental and challenging task in image processing and computer vision. The color image segmentation is attracting more attention due to the color image provides more information than the gray image. In this paper, we propose a variational model based on a convex K-means approach to segment color images. The proposed variational method uses a combination of $l_1$ and $l_2$ regularizers to maintain edge information of objects in images while overcoming the staircase effect. Meanwhile, our one-stage strategy is an improved version based on the smoothing and thresholding strategy, which contributes to improving the accuracy of segmentation. The proposed method performs the following steps. First, we specify the color set which can be determined by human or the K-means method. Second, we use a variational model to obtain the most appropriate color for each pixel from the color set via convex relaxation and lifting. The Chambolle-Pock algorithm and simplex projection are applied to solve the variational model effectively. Experimental results and comparison analysis demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method.
Stain color variation in histological images, caused by a variety of factors, is a challenge not only for the visual diagnosis of pathologists but also for cell segmentation algorithms. To eliminate the color variation, many stain normalization approaches have been proposed. However, most were designed for hematoxylin and eosin staining images and performed poorly on immunohistochemical staining images. Current cell segmentation methods systematically apply stain normalization as a preprocessing step, but the impact brought by color variation has not been quantitatively investigated yet. In th…
Classification is an important step in machine vision systems; it reveals the true identity of an object using features extracted in pre-processing steps. Practical usage requires the operation to be fast, energy efficient and easy to implement. In this paper, we present a design of the Minimum Distance Classifier based on an FPGA platform. It is optimized by the pipelined structure to strike a balance between device utilization and computational speed. In addition, the dimension of the feature space is modeled as a generic parameter, making it possible for the design to re-generate hardware t…
In this paper we present a new approach for feature fusion between RGB and LWIR Thermal images for the task of semantic segmentation for driving perception. We propose DooDLeNet, a double DeepLab architecture with specialized encoder-decoders for thermal and color modalities and a shared decoder for final segmentation. We combine two strategies for feature fusion: confidence weighting and correlation weighting. We report state-of-the-art mean IoU results on the MF dataset.

The present paper puts forward an incipient study that uses a traditional segmentation method based on Zernike moments for extracting significant features from frames of fetal echocardiograms from first trimester color Doppler examinations. A distance based approach is then used on the obtained indicators to classify frames of three given categories that should be present in a normal heart condition. The computational tool shows promise in supporting the obstetrician in a rapid recognition of heart views during screening.

Skin lesion segmentation is one of the crucial steps for an efficient non-invasive computer-aided early diagnosis of melanoma. This paper investigates how color information, besides saliency, can be used to determine the pigmented lesion region automatically. Unlike most existing segmentation methods using only the saliency in order to discriminate against the skin lesion from the surrounding regions, we propose a novel method employing a binarization process coupled with new perceptual criteria, inspired by the human visual perception, related to the properties of saliency and color of the in…

We present a novel approach that combines machine learning based interactive image segmentation using supervoxels with a clustering method for the automated identification of similarly colored images in large data sets which enables a guided reuse of classifiers. Our approach solves the problem of significant color variability prevalent and often unavoidable in biological and medical images which typically leads to deteriorated segmentation and quantification accuracy thereby greatly reducing the necessary training effort. This increase in efficiency facilitates the quantification of much larg…
Image segmentation is a concept that is often used for object detection. This detection has difficulty detecting objects with backgrounds that have many colors and even have a color similar to the object being detected. This study aims to detect fish using segmentation, namely segmenting fish images using k-means clustering. The segmentation process is processed by improving the image first. The initial process is preprocessing to improve the image. Preprocessing is done twice, before segmentation using k-means and after. Preprocessing stage 1 using resize and reshape. Whereas after k-means is…

An automatic image segmentation procedure is an inevitable part of many image analyses and computer vision which deeply affect the rest of the system; therefore, a set of interactive segmentation evaluation methods can substantially simplify the system development process. This entry presents the state of the art of quantitative evaluation metrics for color image segmentation methods by performing an analytical and comparative review of the measures. The decision-making process in selecting a suitable evaluation metric is still very serious because each metric tends to favor a different segmen…

As an essential prerequisite task in image-based plant phenotyping, leaf segmentation has garnered increasing attention in recent years. While self-supervised learning is emerging as an effective alternative to various computer vision tasks, its adaptation for image-based plant phenotyping remains rather unexplored. In this work, we present a self-supervised leaf segmentation framework consisting of a self-supervised semantic segmentation model, a color-based leaf segmentation algorithm, and a self-supervised color correction model. The self-supervised semantic segmentation model groups the se…
Instance segmentation of overlapping objects in biomedical images remains a largely unsolved problem. We take up this challenge and present MultiStar, an extension to the popular instance segmentation method StarDist. The key novelty of our method is that we identify pixels at which objects overlap and use this information to improve proposal sampling and to avoid suppressing proposals of truly overlapping objects. This allows us to apply the ideas of StarDist to images with overlapping objects, while incurring only a small overhead compared to the established method. MultiStar shows promising…
Colorectal cancer is a one of the highest causes of cancer-related death, especially in men. Polyps are one of the main causes of colorectal cancer and early diagnosis of polyps by colonoscopy could result in successful treatment. Diagnosis of polyps in colonoscopy videos is a challenging task due to variations in the size and shape of polyps. In this paper we proposed a polyp segmentation method based on convolutional neural network. Performance of the method is enhanced by two strategies. First, we perform a novel image patch selection method in the training phase of the network. Second, in …

We present a novel and effective binary representation for convex shapes. We show the equivalence between the shape convexity and some properties of the associated indicator function. The proposed method has two advantages. Firstly, the representation is based on a simple inequality constraint on the binary function rather than the definition of convex shapes, which allows us to obtain efficient algorithms for various applications with convexity prior. Secondly, this method is independent of the dimension of the concerned shape. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed representation…

Skin lesion segmentation can be rather a challenging task owing to the presence of artifacts, low contrast between lesion and boundary, color variegation, fuzzy skin lesion borders and heterogeneous background in dermoscopy images. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective saliency-based approach derived in the frequency and spatial domain to detect pigmented skin lesion. Two color models are utilized for the construction of these maps. We suggest a different metric for each color model to design map in the spatial domain via color features. The map in the frequency domain is generated …

Nuclei segmentation and classification is the first and most crucial step that is utilized for many different microscopy medical analysis applications. However, it suffers from many issues such as the segmentation of small objects, imbalance, and fine-grained differences between types of nuclei. In this paper, multiple different contributions were done tackling these problems present. Firstly, the recently released "ConvNeXt" was used as the encoder for HoVer-Net model since it leverages the key components of transformers that make them perform well. Secondly, to enhance the visual differences…

Since the introduction of digital and computational pathology as a field, one of the major problems in the clinical application of algorithms has been the struggle to generalize well to examples outside the distribution of the training data. Existing work to address this in both pathology and natural images has focused almost exclusively on classification tasks. We explore and evaluate the robustness of the 7 best performing nuclear segmentation and classification models from the largest computational pathology challenge for this problem to date, the CoNIC challenge. We demonstrate that existi…
Computer-Aided Diagnosis systems are required to extract suitable information about retina and its changes. In particular, identifying objects of interest such as lesions and anatomical structures from the retinal images is a challenging and iterative process that is doable by image processing approaches. Microaneurysm (MAs) are one set of these changes caused by diabetic retinopathy (DR). In fact, MAs detection is the main step for the identification of DR in the retinal images analysis. The objective of this study is to apply an automated method for the detection of MAs and compare the resul…
In this paper, we propose a method to segment regions in three-dimensional point clouds. We assume that (i) the shape and the number of regions in the point cloud are not known and (ii) the point cloud may be noisy. The method consists of two steps. In the first step we use a deep neural network to predict the probability that a pair of small patches from the point cloud belongs to the same region. In the second step, we use a convex-optimization based method to improve the predictions of the network by enforcing consistency constraints. We evaluate the accuracy of our method on a custom datas…

The study of the retinal vasculature is a fundamental stage in the screening and diagnosis of many diseases. A complete retinal vascular analysis requires to segment and classify the blood vessels of the retina into arteries and veins (A/V). Early automatic methods approached these segmentation and classification tasks in two sequential stages. However, currently, these tasks are approached as a joint semantic segmentation task, as the classification results highly depend on the effectiveness of the vessel segmentation. In that regard, we propose a novel approach for the simultaneous segmentat…

The chromaticity diagram associated with the CIE 1931 color matching functions is shown to be slightly non-convex. While having no impact on practical colorimetric computations, the non-convexity does have a significant impact on the shape of some optimal object color reflectance distributions associated with the outer surface of the object color solid. Instead of the usual two-transition Schrodinger form, many optimal colors exhibit higher transition counts. A linear programming formulation is developed and is used to locate where these higher-transition optimal object colors reside on the ob…
Color images are easy to understand visually and can acquire a great deal of information, such as color and texture. They are highly and widely used in tasks such as segmentation. On the other hand, in indoor person segmentation, it is necessary to collect person data considering privacy. We propose a new task for human segmentation from invisible information, especially airborne ultrasound. We first convert ultrasound waves to reflected ultrasound directional images (ultrasound images) to perform segmentation from invisible information. Although ultrasound images can roughly identify a person…
An unsupervised data-driven nuclei segmentation method for histology images, called CBM, is proposed in this work. CBM consists of three modules applied in a block-wise manner: 1) data-driven color transform for energy compaction and dimension reduction, 2) data-driven binarization, and 3) incorporation of geometric priors with morphological processing. CBM comes from the first letter of the three modules - "Color transform", "Binarization" and "Morphological processing". Experiments on the MoNuSeg dataset validate the effectiveness of the proposed CBM method. CBM outperforms all other unsuper…
