英文摘要：

We provide an overview of the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) work on evolving the 5G wireless technology to support non-terrestrial satellite networks. Adapting 5G to support non-terrestrial networks entails a holistic design spanning across multiple areas from radio access network to services and system aspects to core and terminals. In this article, we describe the main topics of non-terrestrial networks, explain in detail the design aspects, and share various design rationales influencing standardization.

TaNTIN: Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Integrated Networks-A collaborative technologies perspective for beyond 5G and 6G

The world is moving toward globalization rapidly. Everybody has easy access to information with the spread of Internet technology. Businesses are growing beyond national borders. Internationalization affects every aspect of life. In this scenario, by dispersing functions and tasks across organizational borders, time and space, global organizations have higher requirements for collaboration. In order to allow decision-makers and knowledge workers, situated at different times and spaces, to work more efficiently, collaborative technologies are needed. In this paper, we give an overview of potent…

5G satellite networks for IoT: offloading and backhauling

One of the main drivers of 5G cellular networks is provision of connectivity service for various Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Considering the potential volume of IoT devices at a global scale, the next leap is to integrate Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) into 5G terrestrial systems, thereby extend the coverage and complement the terrestrial service. This paper focuses on the use of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations for two specific purposes: offloading and backhauling. The former allows offloading IoT traffic from a congested terrestrial network, usually in a very dense area. …

Towards Global and Limitless Connectivity: The Role of Private NGSO Satellite Constellations for Future Space-Terrestrial Networks

Satellite networks are expected to support global connectivity and services via future integrated 6G space-terrestrial networks (STNs), as well as private non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) constellations. In the past few years, many such private constellations have been launched or are in planning, e.g. SpaceX and OneWeb to name a few. In this article we take a closer look at the private constellations and give a comprehensive overview of their features. We then discuss major technical challenges resulting from their design and briefly review the recent literature addressing these chall…

UAV Base Station Location Optimization for Next Generation Wireless Networks: Overview and Future Research Directions

Unmanned aerial vehicles mounted base stations (UAV-BSs) are expected to become one of the significant components of the Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWNs). Rapid deployment, mobility, higher chances of unobstructed propagation path, and flexibility features of UAV-BSs have attracted significant attention. Despite, potentially, high gains brought by UAV-BSs in NGWNs, many challenges are also introduced by them. Optimal location assignment to UAV-BSs, arguably, is the most widely investigated problem in the literature on UAV-BSs in NGWNs. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the…
