To every regular category $\mathcal{A}$ equipped with a degree function $δ$ one can attach a pseudo-abelian tensor category $\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{A},δ)$. We show that the generating objects of $\mathcal{T}$ decompose canonically as a direct sum. In this paper we calculate morphisms, compositions of morphisms and tensor products of the summands. As a special case we recover the original construction of Deligne's category $\operatorname{Rep} S_t$.
We extend to semi-abelian categories the notion of characteristic subobject, which is widely used in group theory and in the theory of Lie algebras. Moreover, we show that many of the classical properties of characteristic subgroups of a group hold in the general semi-abelian context, or in stronger ones.
In a coherent category, the posets of subobjects have very strong properties. We emphasize the validity of these properties, in general categories, for well-behaved classes of subobjects. As an example of application, we investigate the problem of the various torsion theories which can be universally associated with a pretorsion one.
For a category with subobjects and factorization, here we describe a new category which we call category of chain bundles and it is shown that this new category is also a category with subobjects and admits factorization under certain restriction. Further we provide several examples of bundle categories and discuss some interesting properties of these categories.
We prove that every locally Cartesian closed $\infty$-category with subobject classifier has a strict initial object and disjoint and universal binary coproducts.
In a semi-abelian context, we study the condition (NH) asking that Higgins commutators of normal subobjects are normal subobjects. We provide examples of categories that do or do not satisfy this property. We focus on the relationship with the "Smith is Huq" condition (SH) and characterise those semi-abelian categories in which both (NH) and (SH) hold in terms of reflection and preservation properties of the change of base functors of the fibration of points.
Starting from an abelian category A such that every object has only finitely many subobjects we construct a semisimple tensor category T. We show that T interpolates the categories Rep(Aut(p),K) where p runs through certain projective (pro-)objects of A. The main example is A=finite dimensional F_q-vector spaces. Then T can be considered as the category of representations of GL(n,F_q) where n is not a natural number. This work extends a construction of Deligne for symmetric groups.
We construct injective hulls and projective covers in categories of generalized uniform hypergraphs which generalizes the constructions in the category of quivers and the category of undirected graphs. While the constructions are not functorial, they are "sub-functorial", meaning they are subobjects of functorial injective and projective refinements.
A simple criterion for a functor to be finitary is presented: we call $F$ finitely bounded if for all objects $X$ every finitely generated subobject of $FX$ factorizes through the $F$-image of a finitely generated subobject of $X$. This is equivalent to $F$ being finitary for all functors between `reasonable' locally finitely presentable categories, provided that $F$ preserves monomorphisms. We also discuss the question when that last assumption can be dropped. The answer is affirmative for functors between categories such as Set, K-Vec (vector spaces), boolean algebras, and actions of any fin…
We introduce a new method to construct a Grothendieck category from a given colored quiver. This is a variant of the construction used to prove that every partially ordered set arises as the atom spectrum of a Grothendieck category. Using the new method, we prove that for every finite partially ordered set, there exists a locally noetherian Grothendieck category such that every nonzero object contains a compressible subobject and its atom spectrum is isomorphic to the given partially ordered set.
In this paper, we obtain a non-abelian analogue of Lubkin's embedding theorem for abelian categories. Our theorem faithfully embeds any small regular Mal'tsev category $\mathbb{C}$ in an $n$-th power of a particular locally finitely presentable regular Mal'tsev category. The embedding preserves and reflects finite limits, isomorphisms and regular epimorphisms, as in the case of Barr's embedding theorem for regular categories. Furthermore, we show that we can take $n$ to be the (cardinal) number of subobjects of the terminal object in $\mathbb{C}$.
We introduce the notion of a definable category--a category equivalent to a full subcategory of a locally finitely presentable category that is closed under products, directed colimits and pure subobjects. Definable subcategories are precisely the finite-injectivity classes. We prove a $2$-duality between the $2$-category of small exact categories and the $2$-category of definable categories, and provide a new proof of its additive version. We further introduce a third vertex of the $2$-category of regular toposes and show that the diagram of $2$-(anti-)equivalences between three $2$-categorie…
In universal algebra, it is well known that varieties admitting a majority term admit several Mal'tsev-type characterizations. The main aim of this paper is to establish categorical counterparts of some of these characterizations for regular categories. We prove a categorical version of Bergman's Double-projection Theorem: a regular category is a majority category if and only if every subobject $S$ of a finite product $A_1 \times A_2 \times \cdots \times A_n$ is uniquely determined by its two-fold projections. We also establish a categorical counterpart of the Pairwise Chinese Remainder Theore…
We extend the calculus of relations to embed a regular category A into a family of pseudo-abelian tensor categories T(A,d) depending on a degree function d. Under the condition that all objects of A have only finitely many subobjects, our main results are as follows: 1. Let N be the maximal proper tensor ideal of T(A,d). We show that T(A,d)/N is semisimple provided that A is exact and Mal'cev. Thereby, we produce many new semisimple, hence abelian, tensor categories. 2. Using lattice theory, we give a simple numerical criterion for the vanishing of N. 3. We determine all degree functions for w…
In a regular category $\mathbb E$, the direct image along a regular epimorphism $f$ of a preorder is not a preorder in general. In $Set$, its best preorder approximation is then its cocartesian image above $f$. In a regular category, the existence of such a cocartesian image above $f$ of a preorder $S$ is actually equivalent to the existence of the supremum $R[f]\vee S$ among the preorders. We investigate here some conditions ensuring the existence of these cocartesian images or equivalently of these suprema. They applied to two very dissimilar contexts: any topos $\mathbb E$ with suprema of c…
The main aim of this paper is to provide a description of neighbourhood operators in finitely complete categories with finite coproducts and a proper factorisation system such that the semilattice of admissible subobjects make a distributive complete lattice. The equivalence between neighbourhoods, Kuratowski interior operators and pseudo-frame sets is proved. Furthermore the categories of internal neighbourhoods is shown to be topological. Regular epimorphisms of categories of neighbourhoods are described and conditions ensuring hereditary regular epimorphisms are probed. It is shown the cate…
We study the relation between Bourn's notion of peri-abelian category and conditions involving the coincidence of the Smith, Huq and Higgins commutators. In particular we show that a semi-abelian category is peri-abelian if and only if for each normal subobject $K\leq X$, the Higgins commutator of $K$ with itself coincides with the normalisation of the Smith commutator of the denormalisation of $K$ with itself. We show that if a category is peri-abelian, then the condition (UCE), which was introduced and studied by Casas and the second author, holds for that category. In addition we show, usin…
We provide various ways to characterise $Σ$-pure-injective objects in a compactly generated triangulated category. These characterisations mimic analogous well-known results from the model theory of modules. The proof involves two approaches. In the first approach we adapt arguments from the module-theoretic setting. Here the one-sorted language of modules over a fixed ring is replaced with a canonical multi-sorted language, whose sorts are given by compact objects. Throughout we use a variation of the Yoneda embedding, called the resticted Yoneda functor, which associates a multi-sorted struc…
Let U(g) denote the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra g. We show the existence of a ribbon algebra in a particular deformation of U(g) which leads to a symmetric pre-monoidal category of U(g)-modules.
Let $V_*\otimes V\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$ be a non-degenerate pairing of countable-dimensional complex vector spaces $V$ and $V_*$. The Mackey Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{gl}^M(V,V_*)$ corresponding to this paring consists of all endomorphisms $φ$ of $V$ for which the space $V_*$ is stable under the dual endomorphism $φ^*: V^*\rightarrow V^*$. We study the tensor Grothendieck category $\mathbb{T}$ generated by the $\mathfrak{g}$-modules $V$, $V_*$ and their algebraic duals $V^*$ and $V^*_*$. This is an analogue of categories considered in prior literature, the main difference being that …
A "Chen space" is a set X equipped with a collection of "plots" - maps from convex sets to X - satisfying three simple axioms. While an individual Chen space can be much worse than a smooth manifold, the category of all Chen spaces is much better behaved than the category of smooth manifolds. For example, any subspace or quotient space of a Chen space is a Chen space, and the space of smooth maps between Chen spaces is again a Chen space. Souriau's "diffeological spaces" share these convenient properties. Here we give a unified treatment of both formalisms. Following ideas of Dubuc, we show th…
Let g be a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra and U_h(g) its quantized enveloping algebra. The quantum Weyl group operators of U_h(g) and the universal R-matrices of its Levi subalgebras endow U_h(g) with a natural quasi-Coxeter quasitriangular quasibialgebra structure which underlies the action of the braid group of g and Artin's braid groups on the tensor product of integrable, category O modules. We show that this structure can be transferred to the universal enveloping algebra Ug[[h]]. The proof relies on a modification of the Etingof-Kazhdan quantization functor, and yields an isomorphism be…
A subunit in a monoidal category is a subobject of the monoidal unit for which a canonical morphism is invertible. They correspond to open subsets of a base topological space in categories such as those of sheaves or Hilbert modules. We show that under mild conditions subunits endow any monoidal category with a kind of topological intuition: there are well-behaved notions of restriction, localisation, and support, even though the subunits in general only form a semilattice. We develop universal constructions completing any monoidal category to one whose subunits universally form a lattice, pre…
For a braided tensor category C and a subcategory K there is a notion of centralizer C_C(K), which is a full tensor subcategory of C. A pre-modular tensor category is known to be modular in the sense of Turaev iff the center Z_2(C):=C_C(C) (not to be confused with the center Z_1 of a tensor category, related to the quantum double) is trivial, i.e. equivalent to Vect, and dim(C)<>0. Here dim(C)=sum_i d(X_i)^2, the X_i being the simple objects. We prove the following double centralizer theorem: Let C be a modular category and K a full tensor subcategory closed w.r.t. direct sums, subobjects and …
A duality between the category of convex spaces and measurable spaces arises from the existence of the unit interval, which is an object in both these categories. The full subcategory of the category of convex spaces, consisting of just the single object, the unit interval, is both a dense and codense subcategory in the category of convex spaces. Combined with the the symmetric monoidal closed category structure of the category, one obtains the double dualization monad into the unit interval, which sends a point to the evaluation map at that point. The restriction of the codomain of the unit o…
We introduce twisted arrow categories of operads and of algebras over operads. Up to equivalence of categories, the simplex category $Δ$, Segal's category $Γ$, Connes cyclic category $Λ$, Moerdijk-Weiss dendroidal category $Ω$, and categories similar to graphical categories of Hackney-Robertson-Yau are twisted arrow categories of symmetric or cyclic operads. Twisted arrow categories of operads admit Segal presheaves and 2-Segal presheaves, or decomposition spaces. Twisted arrow category of an operad $P$ is the $(\infty, 1)$-localization of the corresponding category $Ω/P$ by the boundary prese…
Quantum categories have been recently studied because of their relation to bialgebroids, small categories, and skew monoidales. This is the first of a series of papers based on the author's PhD thesis in which we examine the theory of quantum categories developed by Day, Lack, and Street. A quantum category is an opmonoidal monad on the monoidale associated to a biduality $R\dashv R^{\circ}$, or enveloping monoidale, in a monoidal bicategory of modules $\mathsf{Mod}(\mathcal{V})$ for a monoidal category $\mathcal{V}$. Lack and Street proved that quantum categories are in equivalence with right…
We consider an arbitrary Abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ and a subcategory $\mathcal{T}$ closed under extensions and direct summands, and characterize those $\mathcal{T}$ that are (semi-)special preenveloping in $\mathcal{A}$; as a byproduct, we generalize to this setting several classical results for categories of modules. For instance, we get that the special preenveloping subcategories $\mathcal{T}$ of $\mathcal{A}$ closed under extensions and direct summands are precisely those for which $(_{}^{\perp_1}\mathcal{T},\mathcal{T})$ is a right complete cotorsion pair, where $_{}^{\perp_1}\mathca…
In an abelian category $\mathscr{A}$ with small ${\rm Ext}$ groups, we show that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between any two of the following: balanced pairs, subfunctors $\mathcal{F}$ of ${\rm Ext}^{1}_{\mathscr{A}}(-,-)$ such that $\mathscr{A}$ has enough $\mathcal{F}$-projectives and enough $\mathcal{F}$-injectives and Quillen exact structures $\mathcal{E}$ with enough $\mathcal{E}$-projectives and enough $\mathcal{E}$-injectives. In this case, we get a strengthened version of the translation of the Wakamatsu lemma to the exact context, and also prove that subcategories which a…
When formalizing mathematics in (generalized predicative) constructive type theories, or more practically in proof assistants such as Coq or Agda, one is often using setoids (types with explicit equivalence relations). In this note we consider two categories of setoids with equality on objects and show that they are isomorphic. Both categories are constructed from a fixed proof-irrelevant family $F$ of setoids. The objects of the categories are the index setoid $I$ of the family, whereas the definition of arrows differs. The first category has for arrows triples $(a,b,f:F(a) \to F(b))$ where $…
Sheaves are objects of a local nature: a global section is determined by how it looks locally. Hence, a sheaf cannot describe mathematical structures which contain global or nonlocal geometric information. To fill this gap, we introduce the theory of "gleaves", which are presheaves equipped with an additional "gluing operation" of compatible pairs of local sections. This generalizes the conditional product structures of Dawid and Studený, which correspond to gleaves on distributive lattices. Our examples include the gleaf of metric spaces and the gleaf of joint probability distributions. A res…
