The past 20 years have witnessed a renewal of interest in the subject of double-diffusive processes in astrophysics, and their impact on stellar evolution. This lecture aims to summarize the state of the field as of early 2019, although the reader should bear in mind that it is rapidly evolving. An Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics article entitled "Double-diffusive convection at low Prandtl number" (Garaud, 2018) contains a reasonably comprehensive review of the topic, up to the summer of 2017. I focus here on presenting what I hope are clear derivations of some of the most important results with an astrophysical audience in mind, and discuss their implications for stellar evolution, both in an observational context, and in relation to previous work on the subject.
Recently, Silvers, Vasil, Brummell, & Proctor (2009), using numerical simulations, confirmed the existence of a double diffusive magnetic buoyancy instability of a layer of horizontal magnetic field produced by the interaction of a shear velocity field with a weak vertical field. Here, we demonstrate the longer term nonlinear evolution of such an instability in the simulations. We find that a quasi two-dimensional interchange instability rides (or "surfs") on the growing shear-induced background downstream field gradients. The region of activity expands since three-dimensional perturbations re…
We present Direct Numerical Simulations of the transport of heat and heavy elements across a double-diffusive interface or a double-diffusive staircase, in conditions that are close to those one may expect to find near the boundary between the heavy-element rich core and the hydrogen-helium envelope of giant planets such as Jupiter. We find that the non-dimensional ratio of the buoyancy flux associated with heavy element transport to the buoyancy flux associated with heat transport lies roughly between 0.5 and 1, which is much larger than previous estimates derived by analogy with geophysical …
Oscillatory double-diffusive convection (ODDC, more traditionally called semiconvection) is a form of linear double-diffusive instability that occurs in fluids that are unstably stratified in temperature (Schwarzschild unstable), but stably stratified in chemical composition (Ledoux stable). This scenario is thought to be quite common in the interiors of stars and giant planets, and understanding the transport of heat and chemical species by ODDC is of great importance to stellar and planetary evolution models. Fluids unstable to ODDC have a tendency to form convective thermo-compositional lay…
Previous theoretical work has speculated about the existence of double-diffusive magnetic buoyancy instabilities of a dynamically evolving horizontal magnetic layer generated by the interaction of forced vertically sheared velocity and a background vertical magnetic field. Here we confirm numerically that if the ratio of the magnetic to thermal diffusivities is sufficiently low then such instabilities can indeed exist, even for high Richardson number shear flows. Magnetic buoyancy may therefore occur via this mechanism for parameters that are likely to be relevant to the solar tachocline, wher…
So far, numerical studies of double-diffusive layering in turbulent convective flows have neglected the effects of rotation. We undertake a first step into that direction by investigating how Coriolis forces affect a double-diffusive layer inside a rotating spherical shell. For this purpose we have run simulations in a parameter regime where these layers are expected to form and successively increased the rate of rotation with the result that fast rotation is found to have a similar stabilising effect on the overall convective flux as an increase of the stability ratio $R_ρ$ has in a non-rotat…
Much progress has recently been made in understanding and quantifying vertical mixing induced by double-diffusive instabilities such as fingering convection (usually called thermohaline convection) and oscillatory double-diffusive convection (a process closely related to semiconvection). This was prompted in parts by advances in supercomputing, which allow us to run Direct Numerical Simulations of these processes at parameter values approaching those relevant in stellar interiors, and in parts by recent theoretical developments in oceanography where such instabilities also occur. In this paper…
We present a numerical study of double-diffusive convection characterized by a stratification unstable to thermal convection while at the same time a mean molecular weight (or solute concentration) difference between top and bottom counteracts this instability. Convective zones can form in this case either by the stratification being locally unstable to the combined action of both temperature and solute gradients or by another process, the oscillatory double-diffusive convective instability, which is triggered by the faster molecular diffusivity of heat in comparison with that one of the solut…
Double-diffusive convection, often referred to as semi-convection in astrophysics, occurs in thermally and compositionally stratified systems which are stable according to the Ledoux-criterion but unstable according to the Schwarzchild criterion. This process has been given relatively little attention so far, and its properties remain poorly constrained. In this paper, we present and analyze a set of three-dimensional simulations of this phenomenon in a Cartesian domain under the Boussinesq approximation. We find that in some cases the double-diffusive convection saturates into a state of homo…
We study local instabilities of a differentially rotating viscous flow of electrically conducting incompressible fluid subject to an external azimuthal magnetic field. In the presence of the magnetic field the hydrodynamically stable flow can demonstrate non - axisymmetric azimuthal magnetorotational instability (AMRI) both in the diffusionless case and in the double-diffusive case with viscous and ohmic dissipation. Performing stability analysis of amplitude transport equations of short-wavelength approximation, we find that the threshold of the diffusionless AMRI via the Hamilton-Hopf bifurc…
We have identified an important source of mixing in stellar radiation zones, that would arise whenever two conditions are satisfied: (1) the presence of an inverse vertical compositional gradient, and (2) the presence of density-compensating horizontal gradients of temperature (alternatively, entropy) and composition. The former can be caused naturally by any off-center burning process, by atomic diffusion, or by surface accretion. The latter could be caused by rotation, tides, meridional flows, etc. The linear instability and its nonlinear development have been well-studied in the oceanograph…
A grid of numerical simulations of double-diffusive convection is presented for astrophysical conditions. As in laboratory and geophysical cases convection takes place in a layered form. A translation between the astrophysical fluid mechanics and incompressible (Boussinesq) approximation is given, valid for thin layers. Its validity is checked by comparison of the results of fully compressible and Boussinesq simulations of semiconvection. A fitting formula is given for the superadiabatic gradient as a function of this parameter. The superadiabaticity depends on the thickness $d$ of the double …
While conventional interior models for Jupiter and Saturn are based on the simplistic assumption of a solid core surrounded by a homogeneous gaseous envelope, we derive new models with an inhomogeneous distribution of heavy elements, i.e. a gradient of composition, within these planets. Such a compositional stratification hampers large scale convection which turns into double-diffusive convection, yielding an inner thermal profile which departs from the traditionally assumed adiabatic interior, affecting these planet heat content and cooling history. To address this problem, we develop an anal…
Regions of stellar and planetary interiors that are unstable according to the Schwarzschild criterion, but stable according to the Ledoux criterion, are subject to a form of oscillatory double-diffusive (ODD) convection often called "semi-convection". In this series of papers, we use an extensive suite of three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations to quantify the transport of heat and composition by ODD convection, and ultimately propose a new 1D prescription that can be used in stellar and planetary structure and evolution models. The first paper in this series demonstrated that under certa…
We study the properties of oscillatory double-diffusive convection (ODDC) in the presence of a uniform vertical background magnetic field. ODDC takes place in stellar regions that are unstable according to the Schwarzschild criterion and stable according to the Ledoux criterion (sometimes called semiconvective regions), which are often predicted to reside just outside the core of intermediate-mass main sequence stars. Previous hydrodynamic studies of ODDC have shown that the basic instability saturates into a state of weak wave-like convection, but that a secondary instability can sometimes tr…
Oscillatory double-diffusive convection (ODDC) (also known as semi- convection) refers to a type of double diffusive instability that occurs in regions of planetary and stellar interiors which have a destabilizing thermal stratification and a stabilizing mean molecular weight stratification. In this series of papers, we use an extensive suite of three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations to quantify the transport of heat and chemical species by ODDC. Rosenblum et al. (2011) first showed that ODDC can either spontaneously form layers, which significantly enhance the transport of heat and chem…
In an atmosphere, a cloud condensation region is characterized by a strong vertical gradient in the abundance of the related condensing species. On Earth, the ensuing gradient of mean molecular weight has relatively few dynamical consequences because N$_2$ is heavier than water vapor, so that only the release of latent heat significantly impacts convection. On the contrary, in an hydrogen dominated atmosphere (e.g. giant planets), all condensing species are significantly heavier than the background gas. This can stabilize the atmosphere against convection near a cloud deck if the enrichment in…
Super-AGB stars can conclude their evolution either as neon-oxygen white dwarfs or as electron-capture supernovae. We discuss the possible consequences of the existence of this "double final fate" in the self-enrichment of globular clusters and in the nucleosynthesis process of s-nuclei.
The process referred to as "semi-convection" in astrophysics and "double-diffusive convection in the diffusive regime" in Earth and planetary sciences, occurs in stellar and planetary interiors in regions which are stable according to the Ledoux criterion but unstable according to the Schwarzschild criterion. In this series of papers, we analyze the results of an extensive suite of 3D numerical simulations of the process, and ultimately propose a new 1D prescription for heat and compositional transport in this regime which can be used in stellar or planetary structure and evolution models. In …
We present orbital parameters for six double-lined spectroscopic binaries (iota Pegasi, omega Draconis, 12 Bootis, V1143 Cygni, beta Aurigae, and Mizar A) and two double-lined triple star systems (kappa Pegasi and eta Virginis). The orbital fits are based upon high-precision radial velocity observations made with a dispersed Fourier Transform Spectrograph, or dFTS, a new instrument which combines interferometric and dispersive elements. For some of the double-lined binaries with known inclination angles, the quality of our RV data permits us to determine the masses M_1 and M_2 of the stellar c…
Being able to account for the missing mixing in stellar radiative zones is a key step toward a better understanding of stellar evolution. Zahn (1974) argued that thermally diffusive shear-induced turbulence might be responsible for some of this mixing. In Part I and Part II of this series of papers we showed that Zahn's (1974, 1992) mixing model applies when the properties of the turbulence are local. But we also discovered limitations of the model when this locality condition fails, in particular near the edge of a turbulent region. In this paper, we propose a second-order closure model for t…
The statistical parameters of five generalizations of the Lindley distribution, such as the average, variance and moments, are reviewed. A new double truncated Lindley distribution with three parameters is derived. The new distributions are applied to model the initial mass function for stars.
A grid of numerical simulations of double-diffusive convection is presented for the astrophysical case where viscosity (Prandtl number Pr) and solute diffusivity (Lewis number Le) are much smaller than the thermal diffusivity. As in laboratory and geophysical cases convection takes place in a layered form. The proper translation between subsonic flows in a stellar interior and an incompressible (Boussinesq) fluid is given, and the validity of the Boussinesq approximation for the semiconvection problem is checked by comparison with fully compressible simulations. The predictions of a simplified…
Convective core overshooting has a strong influence on the evolution of stars of moderate and high mass. Studies of double-lined eclipsing binaries and stellar oscillations have renewed interest in the possible dependence of overshooting on stellar mass, which has been poorly constrained by observations so far. Here we have used a sample of 29 well-studied double-lined eclipsing binaries in key locations of the H-R diagram to establish the explicit dependence of f(ov) on mass, where f(ov) is the free parameter in the diffusive approximation to overshooting. Measurements of the masses, radii, a…
In this review, an overview of the recent history of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in application to particle transport problems in space physics and astrophysics is given. The aim is to present a helpful working guide to the literature and at the same time introduce key principles of the SDE approach via "toy models". Using these examples, we hope to provide an easy way for newcomers to the field to use such methods in their own research. Aspects covered are the solar modulation of cosmic rays, diffusive shock acceleration, galactic cosmic ray propagation and solar energetic partic…
