This paper introduces a second-order differential inclusion for unconstrained convex optimization. In continuous level, solution existence in proper sense is obtained and exponential decay of a novel Lyapunov function along with the solution trajectory is derived as well. Then in discrete level, based on numerical discretizations of the continuous model, two inexact proximal point algorithms are proposed, and some new convergence rates are established via a discrete Lyapunov function.
Convergence analysis of accelerated first-order methods for convex optimization problems are presented from the point of view of ordinary differential equation solvers. In this paper, based on inertial and Tseng's ideas, we propose two projection-based algorithms to solve a monotone inclusion problem in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Solution theorems of strong convergence are obtained under the certain conditions. Some numerical experiments are presented to illustrate that our algorithms are efficient than the existing results.
We propose an accelerated meta-algorithm, which allows to obtain accelerated methods for convex unconstrained minimization in different settings. As an application of the general scheme we propose nearly optimal methods for minimizing smooth functions with Lipschitz derivatives of an arbitrary order, as well as for smooth minimax optimization problems. The proposed meta-algorithm is more general than the ones in the literature and allows to obtain better convergence rates and practical performance in several settings.

It can handle both Lipschitz and Hölder gradients but does not need to know the smoothness level of the objective function. This paper presents a sufficient condition for stochastic gradients not to slow down the convergence of Nesterov's accelerated gradient method. The new condition has the strong-growth condition by Schmidt \& Roux as a special case, and it also allows us to (i) model problems with constraints and (ii) design new types of oracles (e.g., oracles for finite-sum problems such as SAGA). Our results are obtained by revisiting Nesterov's accelerated algorithm and are useful for designing stochastic oracles without changing the underlying first-order method.

We propose a distributed primal-dual stochastic gradient descent~(SGD) equipped with "powerball" method to accelerate. In this work, we study the computational complexity of reducing the squared gradient magnitude for smooth minimax optimization problems. First, we present algorithms with accelerated $\mathcal{O}(1/k^2)$ last-iterate rates, faster than the existing $\mathcal{O}(1/k)$ or slower rates for extragradient, Popov, and gradient descent with anchoring. The acceleration mechanism combines extragradient steps with anchoring and is distinct from Nesterov's acceleration. We then establish optimality of the $ \mathcal{O}(1/k^2)$ rate through a matching lower bound.
This paper presents a simple primal dual method named DPD which is a flexible framework for a class of saddle point problem with or without strongly convex component. The presented method has linearized version named LDPD and exact version EDPD. Each iteration of DPD updates sequentially the dual and primal variable via simple proximal mapping and refines the dual variable via extrapolation. Lan's accelerated gradient sliding and general relation between the smoothness and strong convexity parameters of function under Legendre transformation we show that under rather general conditions the best known bounds for bilinear convex-concave smooth composite saddle point problem keep true for or non-bilinear convex-concave smooth composite saddle point problem. Moreover, we describe situations when the bounds differ and explain the nature of the difference.
We propose new restarting strategies for the accelerated coordinate descent method. Our main contribution is to show that for a well chosen sequence of restarting times, the restarted method has a nearly geometric rate of convergence. A major feature of the method is that it can take profit of the local quadratic error bound of the objective function without knowing the actual value of the error bound. We study a class of monotone inclusions called "self-concordant inclusion" which covers three fundamental convex optimization formulations as special cases. We develop a new generalized Newton-type framework to solve this inclusion. We develop stochastic first-order primal-dual algorithms to solve a class of convex-concave saddle-point problems. When the saddle function is strongly convex in the primal variable, we develop the first stochastic restart scheme for this problem.
