We have searched nearly 40,000 inorganic solids in the Inorganic Crystal Structural Database to identify compounds containing a transition metal or rare earth kagomé sublattice, a geometrically magnetically frustrated lattice, ultimately identifying $\sim$500 materials. A broad analysis of the chemical and structural trends of these materials shows three types of kagomé sheet stacking and several classes of magnetic complexity. Following the search and classification, we rapidly screen the magnetic properties of a subset of the materials using density functional theory to eliminate those that are unlikely to exhibit magnetic frustration. From the results of our computational screening, we rediscover six materials that have previously been explored for their low temperature magnetic behavior, albeit showing symmetry breaking distortions, spin glass behavior, or magnetic ordering. However, all are materials with antiferromagnetic behavior, which we correctly predict. Finally, we also report three materials that appear to be unexplored for their magnetic properties.
Various and spontaneous magnetic skyrmionic bubbles are experimentally observed for the first time, at room temperature in a frustrated kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 with unixial magnetic anisotropy. The magnetization dynamics were investigated using in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, revealing that the transformation between different magnetic bubbles and domains are via the motion of Bloch lines driven by applied external magnetic field. The results demonstrate that Fe3Sn2 facilitates a unique magnetic control of topological spin textures at room temperature, making it a promising cand…
We investigate the connection between highly frustrated kagome based Hamiltonians and a recently synthesized family of materials containing Ti3+ S=1/2 ions. Employing a combination of all electron density functional theory and numerical diagonalization techniques, we establish the Heisenberg Hamiltonians for the distorted kagome antiferromagnets Rb2NaTi3F12, Cs2NaTi3F12 and Cs2KTi3F12. We determine magnetization curves in excellent agreement with experimental observations. Our calculations successfully clarify the relationship between the experimental observations and the magnetization-plateau…
We report on the observation of a large topological Hall effect (THE) over a wide temperature region in a geometrically frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet with a kagome-bilayer structure. We found that the magnitude of the THE resistivity increases with temperature and reaches -0.875 μΩ.cm at 380 K. Moreover, the critical magnetic fields with the change of THE are consistent with the magnetic structure transformation, which indicates that the real-space fictitious magnetic field is proportional to the formation of magnetic skyrmions in Fe3Sn2. The results strongly suggest that the large THE originates f…
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated for ferromagnetic Fe3Sn2 single crystal with geometrically frustrated kagome bilayer of Fe. The scaling behavior between anomalous Hall resistivity rho_{xy}^{A} and longitudinal resistivity rho_{xx} is quadratic and further analysis implies that the AHE in Fe3Sn2 single crystal should be dominated by the intrinsic Karplus-Luttinger mechanism rather than extrinsic skew-scattering or side-jump mechanisms. Moreover, there is a sudden jump of anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_{xy}^{A} appearing at about 100 K where the spin-reorientation transition from th…
Layered kagome-lattice 3d transition metals are emerging as an exciting platform to explore the frustrated lattice geometry and quantum topology. However, the typical kagome electronic bands, characterized by sets of the Dirac-like band capped by a phase-destructive flat band, have not been clearly observed, and their orbital physics are even less well investigated. Here, we present close-to-textbook kagome bands with orbital differentiation physics in CoSn, which can be well described by a minimal tight-binding model with single-orbital hopping in Co kagome lattice. The capping flat bands wit…
We investigate analytically and numerically the classical ground states of frustrated Heisenberg models on pyrochlore and kagome lattices in zero and finite magnetic fields. Each model has a wide region in the microscopic parameter space, where the propagation vector is turned to a commensurate position equal to a half of the reciprocal lattice vector with a nontrivial star. Within these regions the zero-field ground states for both models correspond to noncoplanar triple-k spin configurations. A universal appearance of the 3-k states can be related to the spin-space dimensionality. A strong m…
Here we report crystallographic and magnetic studies on high quality samples of the magnetically frustrated S = 1/2 kagome antiferromagnet vesignieite, BaCu3V2O8(OD)2. Powder neutron diffraction data collected from samples obtained by a new hydrothermal synthetic route reveal a previously unobserved trigonal P3121 structure, similar to the isoelectronic mineral SrCu3V2O8(OH)2. The refined structure is consistent with orbital frustration of the eg d-orbitals in a sublattice of the Cu2+ kagome network due to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, which persists below the magnetic transition at TN = 9K an…
The objective of the present work was to analyze the possibility of realization of quantum spin liquid in three volcanic minerals - averievite (Cu5O2(VO4)2(CuCl)), ilinskite (NaCu5O2(SeO3)2Cl3), and avdononite (K2Cu5Cl8(OH)4 2H2O - from the crystal chemistry point of view. Based on the structural data, the sign and strength of magnetic interactions have been calculated and the geometric frustrations serving as the main reason of the existence of spin liquids have been investigated. According to our calculations, the magnetic structures of averievite and ilinskite are composed of antiferromagne…
We study classical $J_1$-$J_2$ models with distinct spin degrees of freedom on a honeycomb lattice. For the XY and Heisenberg spins, the system develops a spiral spin liquid (SSL) that is a thermal cooperative paramagnetic regime with spins fluctuating around the spiral contours in the momentum space, and at low temperatures supports a vector spin-chirality order despite the absence of long-range magnetic order. In a strong contrast, for the Ising moments, the low-temperature spin correlation forms a reciprocal "kagomé" structure in the momentum space that resembles the SSL behaviors and persi…
Electronic flat bands in momentum space, arising from strong localization of electrons in real space, are an ideal stage to realize strong correlation phenomena. In certain lattices with built-in geometrical frustration, electronic confinement and flat bands can naturally arise from the destructive interference of electronic hopping pathways. Such lattice-borne flat bands are often endowed with nontrivial topology if combined with spin-orbit coupling, while their experimental realization in condensed matter system has been elusive so far. Here, we report the direct observation of topological f…
The kagome lattice, consisting of interconnected triangles and hexagons uniquely, is an excellent model system for study frustrated magnetism, electronic correlation and topological electronic structure. After an intensive investigation on frustrated magnetism in insulating magnetic kagome lattices, the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom via spin-orbital coupling in metallic systems (kagome metals) has become an attractive topic recently. Here, we study centrosymmetric YMn6Sn6 with Mn kagome lattice. We discover that it exhibits giant topological Hall effect near room tempera…
The competition between interactions in frustrated magnets allows a wide variety of new ground states, often exhibiting emergent physics and unique excitations. Expanding the suite of lattices available for study enhances our chances of finding exotic physics. Mn$_2$Sb$_2$O$_7$ forms in a chiral, kagome-based structure in which a fourth member is added to the kagome-plane triangles to form an armchair unit and link adjacent kagome planes. This structural motif may be viewed as intermediate between the triangles of the kagome network and the tetrahedra in the pyrochlore lattice. Mn$_2$Sb$_2$O$_…
We present the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Y$_{3}$Cu$_{9}$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_{8}$, a stoichiometric frustrated quantum spin system with slightly distorted kagome layers. Single crystals of Y$_{3}$Cu$_{9}$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_{8}$ were grown under hydrothermal conditions. The structure was determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction and confirmed by neutron powder diffraction. The observed structure reveals two different Cu-positions leading to a slightly distored kagome layer in contrast to the closely related YCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$. Curie-Weiss behavior at high-temperatures w…
The structural-magnetic models of 25 AFM kagome cuprates similar to herbertsmithite (ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2) - a perspective spin liquid - have been calculated and analyzed. Main correlations between the structure and magnetic properties of these compounds were revealed. It has been demonstrated that, in all AFM kagome cuprates, including herbertsmithite, there exists the competition between the exchange interaction and the antisymmetric anisotropic exchange one (the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction), as magnetic ions are not linked to the center of inversion in the kagome lattice. This competition is…
Kagome lattices host flat bands due to their frustrated lattice geometry, which leads to destructive quantum interference of electron wave functions. Here, we report imaging of the kagome flat band localization in real-space using scanning tunneling microscopy. We identify both the Fe3Sn kagome lattice layer and the Sn2 honeycomb layer with atomic resolution in kagome antiferromagnet FeSn. On the Fe3Sn lattice, at the flat band energy determined by the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, tunneling spectroscopy detects an unusual state localized uniquely at the Fe kagome lattice network.…
