Based on the SDSS data, the properties of galaxies with quenched star formation (QGs) within the "splashback"-radius of galaxy clusters $R_{\rm sp}$ and beyond it have been studied. We used a sample of 40 groups and galaxy clusters and a sample of field galaxies at $0.02<z<0.045$. The radii $R_{\rm sp}$ were defined from the observed integrated distribution of the number of galaxies as a function of the squared distance from the center of the galaxy systems. We show that in galaxy clusters 72% of the QGs we have found are within $R_{\rm sp}$. About 40% of these galaxies are late-type ones with ${frac}DeV < 0.8$. Approximately 80% of galaxies with quenched star formation have stellar masses in the range of $\log M_*/M_{\odot} = [10; 11]$. We found that QGs of late types and of early types in a less degree have maximum angular radii $R_{90,r}$ and $R_{50,r}$ near the "splashback"-radius of groups and clusters of galaxies. Our results confirm the assumption that in the filaments directed toward clusters, the quenched galaxies are more massive near the boundaries of clusters of galaxies than at the outskirts.
The accretion of minor satellites is currently proposed as the most likely mechanism to explain the significant size evolution of the massive galaxies during the last ~10 Gyr. In this paper we investigate the rest-frame colors and the average stellar ages of satellites found around massive galaxies (Mstar 10^11Msun) since z~2. We find that the satellites have bluer colors than their central galaxies. When exploring the stellar ages of the galaxies, we find that the satellites have similar ages to the massive galaxies that host them at high redshifts, while at lower redshifts they are, on avera…
We have studied unbarred S0 galaxies, NGC 3599 and NGC 3626, the members of the X-ray bright group Leo II, by means of 3D spectroscopy, long-slit spectroscopy, and imaging, with the aim to identify epoch and mechanismsof their transformation from spirals. Both galaxies have appeared to bear a complex of features resulting obviously from minor merging: decoupled gas kinematics, nuclear starforming rings, and multi-tiered oval large-scale stellar disks. The weak-emission line nucleus of NGC 3599 bears all signs of the Seyfert activity, according to the line-ratio diagnostics of the gas excitatio…
We present IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer 3mm observations of CO(1-0) emission in two 24um-selected starburst galaxies in the outskirts (2-3xR_virial) of the rich cluster Cl0024+16 (z=0.395). The galaxies' inferred far-infrared luminosities place them in the luminous infrared galaxy class (LIRGs, L_FIR>10^11 L_Sun), with star formation rates of ~60 M_Sun/yr. Strong CO(1-0) emission is detected in both galaxies, and we use the CO line luminosity to estimate the mass of cold molecular gas, M(H_2). Assuming M(H_2)/L'_CO = 0.8 M_Sun/(K km^-1 pc^2), we estimate M(H_2) = (5.4-9.1)x10^9 M_Sun fo…
(abridged)Integrated star formation rate (SFR) and specific star formation rate (sSFR), derived from the spectroscopic data obtained by SDSS DR4 are used to show that the star formation activity in galaxies (M_r<=-20.5) found on the outskirts (1-2r_{200}) of some nearby clusters (0.02<=z<=0.15) is enhanced. By comparing the mean SFR of galaxies in a sample of clusters with at least one starburst galaxy (log sSFR>=-10/yr & SFR>10 M_sun/yr) to a sample of clusters without such galaxies (`comparison' clusters), we find that despite the expected decline in the mean SFR of galaxies toward the clust…
We present a search for outlying HII regions in the extended gaseous outskirts of nearby (D < 40 Mpc) galaxies, and subsequent multi-slit spectroscopy used to obtain the HII region nebular oxygen abundances. The galaxies in our sample have extended HI disks and/or interaction-related HI features that extend well beyond their primary stellar components. We report oxygen abundance gradients out to 2.5 times the optical radius for these galaxies which span a range of morphologies and masses. We analyze the underlying stellar and neutral HI gas distributions in the vicinity of the HII regions to u…
Using HST/ACS observations, we measure the color gradients of 3248 galaxies in the GOODS-South field out to z~3 and i_{AB}<25.5 and characterize their dependence on galaxy properties (luminosity, apparent magnitude, galaxy size, redshift and morphological type). The color gradient is measured by the difference of v-i color outside (R_{50}<r<2R_{50}) and inside the half light radius. The gradient shows little evolution with redshift up to z~1 but increases from z~1 to z~2 before flattening out. It also increases with apparent magnitude, with a median value of 0.24 magnitudes at i_{AB}~25.5. It …
We present our recent results on the properties of the outskirts of disk galaxies. In particular, we focus on spiral galaxies with stellar disk truncations in their radial surface brightness profiles. Using SDSS, UDF and GOODS data we show how the position of the break (i.e., a direct estimator of the size of the stellar disk) evolves with time since z~1. Our findings agree with an evolution on the radial position of the break by a factor of 1.3+/-0.1 in the last 8 Gyr for galaxies with similar stellar masses. We also present radial color gradients and how they evolve with time. At all redshif…
Our GHOSTS survey measures the stellar envelope properties of 14 nearby disk galaxies by imaging their resolved stellar populations with HST/ACS&WFPC2. Most of the massive galaxies in the sample (Vrot >200 km/s) have very extended stellar envelopes with Sersic law profiles or mu(r)~r^-2.5 power law profiles in the outer regions. For these massive galaxies we can fit the central bulge light and the outer halo out to 30 kpc with one and the same Sersic profile and the stellar surface density of the profiles correlate with Hubble type and bulge- to-disk ratio. This suggests that the central bulge…
We combine Hubble Space Telescope (HST) G102 & G141 NIR grism spectroscopy with HST/WFC3-UVIS, HST/WFC3-IR and Spitzer/IRAC[3.6μm] photometry to assemble a sample of massive (log(M_star/M_sun) ~ 11) and quenched galaxies at z~1.5. Our sample of 41 galaxies is the largest with G102+G141 NIR spectroscopy for quenched sources at these redshifts. In contrast to the local Universe, z~1.5 quenched galaxies in the high-mass range have a wide range of stellar population properties. We find their SEDs are well fitted with exponentially decreasing SFHs, and short star-formation time-scales (τ<100Myr). Q…
We have obtained long-slit spectra of 174 star-forming galaxies with stellar masses greater than 10^10 M_\odot from the GALEX Arecibo SDSS (GASS) survey. These galaxies have both HI and H_2 mass measurements. The average metallicity profile is strikingly flat out to R_90, the radius enclosing 90% of the r-band light. Metallicity profiles which decline steadily with radius are found primarily for galaxies in our sample with low stellar mass (Log(M_*)<10.2), concentration, and/or mean stellar mass density. Beyond ~R_90, however, around 10 percent of the galaxies in our sample exhibit a sharp dow…
Deep observations of galaxy outskirts reveal faint extended stellar components (ESCs) of streams, shells, and halos, which are ghostly remnants of the tidal disruption of satellite galaxies. We use cosmological galaxy formation simulations in Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and Warm Dark Matter (WDM) models to explore how the dark matter model influences the spatial, kinematic, and orbital properties of ESCs. These reveal that the spherically averaged stellar mass density at large galacto-centric radius can be depressed by up to a factor of 10 in WDM models relative to the CDM model, reflecting the ant…
Low surface brightness galactic stellar halos provide a challenging but promising path towards unraveling the past assembly histories of individual galaxies. Here, we present detailed comparisons between the stellar halos of Milky Way-mass disk galaxies observed as part of the Dragonfly Nearby Galaxies Survey (DNGS) and stellar mass-matched galaxies in the TNG100 run of the IllustrisTNG project. We produce stellar mass maps as well as mock $g$ and $r$-band images for randomly oriented simulated galaxies, convolving the latter with the Dragonfly PSF and taking care to match the background noise…
We demonstrate that dwarf galaxies (10^7 < M_stellar < 10^9 Msun) with no active star formation are extremely rare (<0.06%) in the field. Our sample is based on the NASA-Sloan Atlas which is a re-analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8. We examine the relative number of quenched versus star forming dwarf galaxies, defining quenched galaxies as having no Halpha emission (EW_Halpha < 2 AA) and a strong 4000AA-break. The fraction of quenched dwarf galaxies decreases rapidly with increasing distance from a massive host, leveling off for distances beyond 1.5 Mpc. We define galaxies …
We present evidence for spatially extended low surface brightness emission around Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) in the V band image of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, corresponding to the z~3 rest-frame FUV light, which is a sensitive measure of star formation rates (SFRs). We find that the covering fraction of molecular gas at z~3 is not adequate to explain the emission in the outskirts of LBGs, while the covering fraction of neutral atomic-dominated hydrogen gas at high redshift is sufficient. We develop a theoretical framework to connect this emission around LBGs to the expected emission from ne…
We present an analysis of ultraviolet (UV) emission in the outer regions of a local, volume-limited sample of 56 early-type galaxies, where Hα emission from massive star formation is typically absent. We find excess faint NUV emission in the environments of our early-type galaxies compared to blank sky measured in the same tiles, indicating that the excesses are not due to background contamination. We do not observe corresponding faint FUV excesses. Faint NUV excesses increase with galaxy luminosity and are not correlated with the presence or absence of HI in the environments of these galaxies…
We select a sample of young passive galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 in order to study the processes that quench star formation in the local universe. Quenched galaxies are identified based on the contribution of A-type stars to their observed (central) spectra and relative lack of ongoing star formation; we find that such systems account for roughly 2.5 per cent of all galaxies with log M_sun >= 9.5, and have a space density of ~2.2x10^-4 Mpc^-3. We show that quenched galaxies span a range of morphologies, but that visual classifications suggest they are predominantly…
Current observational evidence suggests that the star formation rate (SFR) efficiency of neutral atomic hydrogen gas measured in Damped Ly-alpha Systems (DLAs) at z~3 is more than 10 times lower than predicted by the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation. To understand the origin of this deficit, and to investigate possible evolution with redshift and galaxy properties, we measure the SFR efficiency of atomic gas at z~1, z~2, and z~3 around star-forming galaxies. We use new robust photometric redshifts in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field to create galaxy stacks in these three redshift bins, and measure t…
Star-formation in the galaxy populations of local massive clusters is reduced with respect to field galaxies, and tends to be suppressed in the core region. Indications of a reversal of the star-formation--density relation have been observed in a few z >1.4 clusters. Using deep imaging from 100-500um from PACS and SPIRE onboard Herschel, we investigate the infrared properties of spectroscopic and photo-z cluster members, and of Halpha emitters in XMMU J2235.3-2557, one of the most massive, distant, X-ray selected clusters known. Our analysis is based mostly on fitting of the galaxies spectral …
The low column density gas at the outskirts of galaxies as traced by the 21 cm hydrogen line emission (HI) represents the interface between galaxies and the intergalactic medium, i.e., where galaxies are believed to get their supply of gas to fuel future episodes of star formation. Photoionization models predict a break in the radial profiles of HI at a column density of 5x10E+19 cm^-2 due to the lack of self-shielding against extragalactic ionizing photons. To investigate the prevalence of such breaks in galactic disks and to characterize what determines the potential "edge" of the HI disks, …
Galaxy cluster outskirts mark the transition region from the mildly non-linear cosmic web to the highly non-linear, virialised, cluster interior. It is in this transition region that the intra-cluster medium (ICM) begins to influence the properties of accreting galaxies and groups, as ram pressure impacts a galaxy's cold gas content and subsequent star formation rate. Conversely, the thermodynamical properties of the ICM in this transition region should also feel the influence of accreting substructure (i.e. galaxies and groups), whose passage can drive shocks. In this paper, we use a suite of…
For the first time, we have systematically explored the population of discrete X-ray sources in the outskirts of early-type galaxies. Based on a broad sample of 20 galaxies observed with Chandra we detected overdensity of X-ray sources in their outskirts. The overdensity appears as halos of resolved sources around the galaxies. These halos are broader than the stellar light, extending out to at least ~ 10 Re (Re is the effective radius). These halos are composed of sources fainter than ~5E38 erg/s, whereas the more luminous sources appear to follow the distribution of the stellar light, sugges…
The bimodality in observed present-day galaxy colours has long been a challenge for hierarchical galaxy formation models, as it requires some physical process to quench (and keep quenched) star formation in massive galaxies. Here we examine phenomenological models of quenching by post-processing the star formation histories of galaxies from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations that reproduce observations of star-forming galaxies reasonably well. We consider recipes for quenching based on major mergers, halo mass thresholds, gas temperature thresholds, and variants thereof. We compare the resu…
Quenched massive spiral galaxies have attracted great attention recently, as more data is available to constrain their environment and cold gas content. However, the quenching mechanism is still uncertain, as it depends on the mass range and baryon budget of the galaxy. In this letter, we report the identification of a rare population of very massive, quenched spiral galaxies with stellar mass $\gtrsim10^{11}{\rm~M_\odot}$ and halo mass $\gtrsim10^{13}{\rm~M_\odot}$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at redshift $z\sim0.1$. Our CO observations using the IRAM-30m telescope show that these galaxi…
We present deep 1.4GHz Very Large Array (VLA) radio continuum observations of two ~half square degree fields in the Coma cluster of galaxies. The two fields, "Coma 1" and "Coma 3," correspond to the cluster core and southwest infall region and were selected on account of abundant pre-existing multiwavelength data. In their most sensitive regions the radio data reach 22 uJy rms per 4.4" beam, sufficient to detect (at 5-sigma) Coma member galaxies with log(L) = 20.11 W/Hz. The full catalog of radio detections is presented herein and consists of 1030 sources detected at >=5 sigma, 628 of which ar…
We derived the luminosity function (LF) of dwarf galaxies in the Coma Cluster down to M_R=-10 at three fields located at the center, intermediate, and outskirt. The LF (-19<M_R<-10) shows no significant differences among the three fields. It shows a clear dip at M_R\sim-13, and is composed of two distinct components of different slopes; the bright component with -19<M_R<-13 has a flatter slope than the faint component with -13<M_R<-10 which has a steep slope. The bright component (-19<M_R<-13) consists of mostly red extended galaxies including few blue galaxies whose colors are typical of late…
We study the outskirts ($R<3R_{200c}$) of 40 groups and clusters of galaxies of the local Universe ($0.02<z<0.045$) with 300~km~s$^{-1}<σ<950$~km~s$^{-1}$. Using the SDSS DR10 catalog data, we measured the stellar mass of galaxy clusters in accordance with the previously determined $K_s$-luminosity (2MASX data) and found their correlation in the form $M_*/M_{\odot} \propto (L_K/L_{\odot})^{1.010\pm0.004}$ ($M_K<-21\,.\!\!^{\rm m}5$, $R<R_{200c}$). We also found the dependence of the galaxy cluster stellar mass on halo mass: $M_*/M_{\odot} \propto (M_{200c}/M_{\odot})^{0.77\pm0.01}$}. Our resul…
We examine the star formation properties of bright (~0.1 L*) satellites around isolated ~L* hosts in the local Universe using spectroscopically confirmed systems in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7. Our selection method is carefully designed with the aid of N-body simulations to avoid groups and clusters. We find that satellites are significantly more likely to be quenched than a stellar mass-matched sample of isolated galaxies. Remarkably, this quenching occurs only for satellites of hosts that are themselves quenched: while star formation is unaffected in the satellites of star-forming hosts…
We compare the star formation (SF) activity in cluster galaxies to the field from z=0.3-1.5 using $Herschel$ SPIRE 250$μ$m imaging. We utilize 274 clusters from the IRAC Shallow Cluster Survey (ISCS) selected as rest-frame near-infrared overdensities over the 9 square degree Bootes field . This analysis allows us to quantify the evolution of SF in clusters over a long redshift baseline without bias against active cluster systems. Using a stacking analysis, we determine the average star formation rates (SFRs) and specific-SFRs (SSFR=SFR/M$_{\star}$) of stellar mass-limited (M>1.3x10$^{10}$ M$_{…
We use the Illustris Simulations to gain insight into the build-up of the outer, low-surface brightness regions which surround galaxies. We characterize the stellar haloes by means of the logarithmic slope of the spherically-averaged stellar density profiles, alphaSTARS at z=0, and we relate these slopes to the properties of the underlying Dark-Matter (DM) haloes, their central galaxies, and their assembly histories. We analyze a sample of ~5,000 galaxies resolved with more than 5x10^4 particles each, and spanning a variety of morphologies and halo masses (3x10^11 < Mvir < 10^14 Msun). We find…
Abridged. We use COSMOS to study in a self-consistent way the change in the number densities of quenched early-type galaxies (Q-ETGs) of a given size over the interval 0.2 < z < 1.0 to study the claimed size evolution of these galaxies. At 10^10.5<Mgalaxy<10^11 Msun, we see no change in the number density of compact Q-ETGs, while at >10^11 Msun we find a decrease by 30%. In both mass bins, the increase of the median sizes of Q-ETGs with time is primarily caused by the addition to the size function of larger and more diffuse Q-ETGs. At all masses, compact Q-ETGs become systematically redder tow…
We investigate the stellar population properties of a sample of 24 massive quenched galaxies at $1.25<z_\mathrm{spec}<2.09$ identified in the COSMOS field with our Subaru/MOIRCS near-IR spectroscopic observations. Tracing the stellar population properties as close to their major formation epoch as possible, we try to put constraints on the star formation history, post-quenching evolution, and possible progenitor star-forming populations for such massive quenched galaxies. By using a set of Lick absorption line indices on a rest-frame optical composite spectrum, the average age, metallicity [Z/…
Inferring line-of-sight distances from redshifts in and around galaxy clusters is complicated by peculiar velocities, a phenomenon known as the "Fingers of God" (FoG). This presents a significant challenge for finding filaments in large observational data sets as these artificial elongations can be wrongly identified as cosmic web filaments by extraction algorithms. Upcoming targeted wide-field spectroscopic surveys of galaxy clusters and their infall regions such as the WEAVE Wide-Field Cluster Survey motivate our investigation of the impact of FoG on finding filaments connected to clusters. …
The mass assembly of galaxies leaves various imprints on their surroundings, such as shells, streams and tidal tails. The frequency and properties of these fine structures depend on the mechanism driving the mass assembly: e.g. a monolithic collapse, rapid cold-gas accretion followed by violent disk instabilities, minor mergers or major dry / wet mergers. Therefore, by studying the outskirts of galaxies, one can learn about their main formation mechanism. I present here our on-going work to characterize the outskirts of Early-Type Galaxies (ETGs), which are powerful probes at low redshift of t…
Using the group catalog obtained from zCOSMOS spectroscopic data and the complementary photometric data from the COSMOS survey, we explore segregation effects occurring in groups of galaxies at intermediate/high redshifts. We built two composite groups at intermediate (0.2 <= z <= 0.45) and high (0.45 < z <= 0.8) redshifts, and we divided the corresponding composite group galaxies into three samples according to their distance from the group center. We explored how galaxy stellar masses and colors - working in narrow bins of stellar masses - vary as a function of the galaxy distance from the g…
We present a detailed study of the stellar and HI structure of the dwarf irregular galaxies SextansA and SextansB, members of the NGC3109 association. We use newly obtained deep (r~26.5) and wide field g,r photometry to extend the Surface Brightness (SB) profiles of the two galaxies down to mu_V~ 31.0 mag/arcsec^2. We find that both galaxies are significantly more extended than what previously traced with surface photometry, out to ~4 kpc from their centers along their major axis. Older stars are found to have more extended distribution with respect to younger populations. We obtain the first …

The total infrared (IR) luminosity is very useful for estimating the star formation rate (SFR) of galaxies, but converting the IR luminosity into an SFR relies on assumptions that do not hold for all galaxies. We test the effectiveness of the IR luminosity as an SFR indicator by applying it to synthetic spectral energy distributions generated from three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of isolated disc galaxies and galaxy mergers. In general, the SFR inferred from the IR luminosity agrees well with the true instantaneous SFR of the simulated galaxies. However, for the major mergers in wh…
We use the IllustrisTNG simulations to show how the fractions of quenched galaxies vary across different environments and cosmic time, and to quantify the role AGN feedback and preprocessing play in quenching group and cluster satellites. At $z=0$, we select galaxies with $M_* = 10^{9-12} M_{\odot}$ residing within ($\leq R_{200c}$) groups and clusters of total host mass $M_{200c}=10^{13-15.2} M_{\odot}$. TNG predicts a quenched fraction of $\sim70-90\%$ (on average) for centrals and satellites $\gtrsim 10^{10.5} M_{\odot}$, regardless of host mass, cosmic time ($0\leq z\leq0.5$), clustercentr…
We present a study of the distribution of X-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the five most massive, $M_{500}^{SZ}>10^{14} M_{\odot}$ , and distant, z$\sim$1, galaxy clusters in the \textit{Planck} and South Pole Telescope (SPT)\textit{} surveys. The spatial and thermodynamic individual properties of each cluster have been defined with unprecedented accuracy at this redshift using deep X-ray observations. This is an essential property of our sample in order to precisely determine the $R_{500}^{Y_{\textrm x}}$ radius of the clusters. For our purposes, we computed the X-ray point-like…
We present a variation of the recently updated Munich semi-analytical galaxy formation model, L-Galaxies, with a new gas stripping method. Extending earlier work, we directly measure the local environmental properties of galaxies to formulate a more accurate treatment of ram-pressure stripping for all galaxies. We fully re-calibrate the modified L-Galaxies model using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method with the stellar mass function and quenched fraction of galaxies at $0\leq z\leq2$ as constraints. Due to this re-calibration, global galaxy population relations, including the stellar mas…
We explore the properties of galaxies on the outskirts of clusters and their dependence on recent dynamical history in order to understand the real impact that the cluster core has on the evolution of galaxies. We analyse the properties of more than 1000 galaxies brighter than $M_{^{0.1}r}$=-19.6 on the outskirts of 90 clusters ($1<r/r_{vir}<2$) in the redshift range $0.05<z<0.10$. Using the line of sight velocity, we selected high and low velocity subsamples. Theoretical predictions indicate that a significant fraction of the first subsample should be backsplash galaxies, that is, objects tha…
From the first two seasons of the Palomar Transient Factory, we identify three peculiar transients (PTF09dav, PTF10iuv, PTF11bij) with five distinguishing characteristics: peak luminosity in the gap between novae and supernovae (M_R = 15.5 to -16.5), rapid photometric evolution (rise-time ~12--15 days), large photospheric velocities (~6000 to 11000 km/s), early spectroscopic evolution into nebular phase (~1 to 3 months) and peculiar nebular spectra dominated by Calcium. We also culled the extensive decade-long Lick Observatory Supernova Search database and identified an additional member of th…
