The measurements of $V_{us}$ in leptonic $(K_{μ2})$ and semileptonic $(K_{l3})$ kaon decays exhibit a $3σ$ disagreement, which could originate either from physics beyond the Standard Model or some large unidentified Standard Model systematic effects. Clarifying this issue requires a careful examination of all existing Standard Model inputs. Making use of a newly-proposed computational framework and the most recent lattice QCD results, we perform a comprehensive re-analysis of the electroweak radiative corrections to the $K_{e3}$ decay rates that achieves an unprecedented level of precision of $10^{-4}$, which improves the current best results by almost an order of magnitude. No large systematic effects are found, which suggests that the electroweak radiative corrections should be removed from the ``list of culprits'' responsible for the $K_{μ2}$--$K_{l3}$ discrepancy.
We describe two recent developments of the radiative correction theory in semileptonic beta decays. For neutron, a novel dispersive analysis of the $γW$-box diagram making use of neutrino scattering data leads to an improved precision and a shifted central value of $V_{ud}$; for kaon, an appropriate combination of meson form factors, lattice QCD inputs and chiral perturbation theory gives a much-improved determination of the radiative corrections in semileptonic kaon decays. These new calculations help to unveil/sharpen a series of anomalies in the measurements of $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$ that ma…
We investigate whether the apparent discrepancy between proton electric form factor from measurements using the Rosenbluth separation technique and polarization transfer method is due to the standard approximations employed in radiative correction procedures. Inaccuracies due to both the peaking approximation and the soft-photon approximation have been removed in our simulation approach. In contrast to results from (e,e'p) experiments, we find them in this case to be too small to explain the discrepancy.
I present an update on the electroweak radiative correction factor to semileptonic tau decays, including a next-to-leading order resummation of large logarithms. My result differs both qualitatively and quantitatively from the one recently obtained by Davier et al. As two consequences, (i) the discrepancy between the predictions for the muon g-2 based on tau decay data and electron-positron annihilation data increases, and (ii) the g-2 prediction based on tau decay data appears to be consistent (within about one standard deviation) with the experimental result from BNL.
The decay constants and the radiative decay widths of η_b(nS) and η_c(nS) are computed within a semirelativistic quark model, using a potential found through the AdS/QCD correspondence. For η_c, the results are in agreement with experimental data, while in the case of η'_c a discrepancy is found and the possible reasons are discussed.
Parity violating (PV) effects in neutron-deuteron radiative capture are studied using Desplanques, Donoghue, and Holstein (DDH) and effective field theory weak potentials. The values of PV effects are calculated using wave functions, obtained by solving three-body Faddeev equations in configuration space for phenomenological strong potentials. The relations between physical observables and low-energy constants are presented, and dependencies of the calculated PV effects on strong and weak potentials are discussed. The presented analysis shows the possible reason for the existing discrepancy in…
We have calculated the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD corrections to the photon energy spectrum in radiative Upsilon decays. The higher-order corrections significantly modify the shape of the spectrum, in particular at large photon energies, and thereby reduce the discrepancy between experimental data and previous leading-order predictions. The next-to-leading order calculation of the photon energy spectrum allows a more reliable determination of the strong coupling constant from radiative Upsilon decays by restricting the analysis to the region of the energy spectrum that can be descr…
We propose a new type of radiative neutrino model with global hidden $U(1)$ symmetry, in which neutrino masses are induced at the four loop level. Then we discuss the muon anomalous magnetic moment to solve the discrepancy between observation and the standard model prediction, and estimate the relic density of a fermion or boson DM candidate in the model. We also discuss the diphoton resonance $R$ by considering a process $pp \to R \to γγ$ as a possible signal of our model.
The discrepancy between the PQCD calculation and the CLEO data for $χ_{c1}\to γV$ ($V=ρ^0,\,ω,\,ϕ$) stimulates our interest in exploring extra mechanism of $χ_{c1}$ decay. In this work, we apply an important non-perturbative QCD effect, i.e., hadronic loop mechanism, to study $χ_{c1}\to γV$ radiative decay. Our numerical result shows that the theoretical results including the hadronic loop contribution and the PQCD calculation of $χ_{c1}\to γV$ are consistent with the corresponding CLEO data of $χ_{c1}\to γV$. We expect further experimental measurement of $χ_{c1}\to γV$ at BES-III, which will …
The results and main steps of an analytic calculation of radiative-recoil corrections of order $α(Zα)^5(m/M)m$ to the Lamb shift in hydrogen are presented. The calculations are performed in the infrared safe Yennie gauge. The discrepancy between two previous numerical calculations of these corrections existing in the literature is resolved. Our new result eliminates the largest source of the theoretical uncertainty in the magnitude of the deuterium-hydrogen isotope shift.
We systematically compute and discuss meson and muon polarized radiative decays. Doubly differential distributions in terms of momenta and helicities of the final lepton and photon are explicitly computed. The undergoing dynamics giving rise to lepton and photon polarizations is examined and analyzed in the soft and hard region of momenta. The particular configurations made by right-handed leptons with accompanying photons are investigated and interpreted as a manifestation of the axial anomaly. The photon polarization asymmetry is evaluated. Finiteness of polarized amplitudes against infrared…
The weak form factor for $B\to K_{1B}$ where $K_{1B}$ is the $^1P_1$ state is calculated in the light-cone sum rules (LCSR). Combining the quark model result for the form factor of $B\to K_{1A}$ with $K_{1A}$ being the $^3P_1$ state, we have larger values for $B\to K_1$ form factors than the previous LCSR results. The increased form factors reduce the discrepancy between theory and the experimental data for $B\to K_1 γ$. Some phenomenological meanings are also discussed.
We compute the electromagnetic form factors of the $l_i l_j γ$ vertex at one-loop level in the minimal G2HDM which has a sub-GeV vector dark matter candidate. The results are applied to the radiative decay rates for the charged lepton flavor violating processes $l_i \to l_j γ$, and the anomalous magnetic dipole moment and the electric dipole moment of the charged lepton. To numerically compute the branching ratio for $μ\to e γ$ and compare with the latest experimental limit from MEG, we adapt our previous parameter space scan that is consistent with the relic density and constraints from direc…
The effects of radiatively decaying, long-lived particles on big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) are discussed. If high-energy photons are emitted after BBN, they may change the abundances of the light elements through photodissociation processes, which may result in a significant discrepancy between the BBN theory and observation. We calculate the abundances of the light elements, including the effects of photodissociation induced by a radiatively decaying particle, but neglecting the hadronic branching ratio. Using these calculated abundances, we derive a constraint on such particles by comparing…
A statistical analysis of the elastic unpolarized electron proton scattering data shows that, at large momentum transfer, the size and the $ε$ dependence of the radiative corrections, as traditionally calculated and applied, may induce large correlations of the parameters of the Rosenbluth fit, which prevent a correct extraction of the electric proton form factor. Using the electron QED structure (radiation) function approach the cross section of elastic electron-proton scattering in leading and next-to leading approximations is calculated and expressed as a correction to the Born cross sectio…
The universal radiative corrections common to neutron and super-allowed nuclear beta decays (also known as ``inner'' corrections) are revisited in light of a recent dispersion relation study that found $+2.467(22)\%$, i.e.~about $2.4σ$ larger than the previous evaluation. For comparison, we consider several alternative computational methods. All employ an updated perturbative QCD four-loop Bjorken sum rule (BjSR) defined QCD coupling supplemented with a nucleon form factor based Born amplitude to estimate axial-vector induced hadronic contributions. In addition, we now include hadronic contrib…
In this write-up, we summarize our recent analysis of radiative decays involving light scalar mesons. Our analysis using the vector meson dominance model at tree level indicates that it may be difficult to distinguish $qq\bar{q}\bar{q}$ picture and $q\bar{q}$ picture for the light scalar nonet. Our result on the process of $ϕ\to π^0 ηγ$ shows that the derivative-type $f_0 K\bar{K}$ interaction reproduces experimental data below 950 GeV well, but gives a poor fit above 950 GeV, i.e., in the energy region around the mass of $a_0(980)$, but that the discrepancy can be compensated by the effect of…
We report on the recently proposed joint resolution of two long-standing puzzles in weak radiative (WR) and nonleptonic (NL) hyperon decays (HD). First, a good VMD-based description of WRHD is presented. In particular, the large negative asymmetry observed in the Σ^+ \to p γdecay is explained through a calculably large SU(3)-breaking effect in the relevant parity-violating amplitude. Second, the achieved description of the parity-violating WRHD amplitudes permits the extraction, via the SU(2)_W + VMD route, of the non-soft-pion correction term in the parity-violating NLHD amplitudes. The latte…
We give a joint description of weak radiative (WR) and nonleptonic (NL) hyperon decays (HD) in broken SU(3). The two groups of decays are linked via $SU(2)_W$ spin symmetry and vector meson dominance (VMD). We use experimental information on the parity-conserving (p.c.) NLHD amplitudes to fix the corresponding WRHD amplitudes. With the latter known, the data on the WRHD branching ratios and asymmetries permit us to determine the parity-violating (p.v.) WRHD amplitudes in terms of two parameters corresponding to the two-quark and single-quark transitions. We obtain a good description of the dat…
We briefly outline the two popular approaches on radiative corrections to neutrino masses and mixing angles, and then carry out a detailed numerical analysis for a consistency check between them in MSSM. We find that the two approaches are nearly consistent with a small discrepancy of a factor of 13 percent in mass eigenvalues at low energy scale, but the predictions on mixing angles are almost consistent. We check the stability of the three types of neutrino models, i.e., hierarchical, inverted hierarchical and degenerate models, under radiative corrections, using both approaches, and find co…
We compute the two-loop electroweak corrections to the radiative decays of the B meson in the SM. Electroweak effects reduce the Wilson coefficient C_7^eff(mw) by 2.6% for a light Higgs boson of about 100 GeV and are less important for a heavier Higgs. The leading term of a heavy top expansion of our result differs from the one obtained in the gaugeless approximation where only top quark Yukawa couplings are considered: we discuss the origin of the discrepancy and provide a criterion for the validity of the gaugeless approximation. As a byproduct of the calculation we also obtain the O(alpha) …
We consider the effects on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) of the radiative decay of a long-lived massive particle. If high-energy photons are emitted after the BBN epoch ($t \sim 1 - 10^3$ sec), they may change the abundances of the light elements through photodissociation processes, which may result in a significant discrepancy between standard BBN and observation. Taking into account recent observational and theoretical developments in this field, we revise our previous study constraining the abundance of the radiatively-decaying particles. In particular, on the theoretical side, it was rece…
We present a reanalysis of the data from Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) experiments E140 [R. C. Walker et al., Phys. Rev. D 49, 5671 (1994)] and NE11 [L. Andivahis et al., Phys. Rev. D 50, 5491 (1994)] on elastic electron-proton scattering. This work is motivated by recent progress in calculating the corresponding radiative corrections and by the apparent discrepancy between the Rosenbluth and polarization transfer measurements of the proton electromagnetic form factors. New, corrected values for the scattering cross sections are presented, as well as a new form factor fit in the $Q…
The current discrepancy of theory and experiment observed recently in muonic hydrogen necessitates a reinvestigation of all corrections to contribute to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen muH, muonic deuterium muD, the muonic 3He ion, as well as in the muonic 4He ion. Here, we choose a semi-analytic approach and evaluate a number of higher-order corrections to vacuum polarization (VP) semi-analytically, while remaining integrals over the spectral density of VP are performed numerically. We obtain semi-analytic results for the second-order correction, and for the relativistic correction to VP. T…
We describe a new approach to computing energy levels of a non-relativistic bound-state of two constituents with masses M and m, by a systematic expansion in powers of m/M. After discussing the method, we demonstrate its potential with an example of the radiative recoil corrections to the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting relevant for the hydrogen, muonic hydrogen, and muonium. A discrepancy between two previous calculations of O(alpha(Zalpha)^5 m^2/M) radiative recoil corrections to the Lamb shift is resolved and several new terms of O(alpha(Zalpha)^5 m^4/M^3) and higher are obtained.
We present a comparison of existing experimental data for the radiative leptonic decays $P\to\ellν_\ellγ$, where $P=K$ or $π$ and $\ell=e$ or $μ$, from the KLOE, PIBETA, E787, ISTRA+ and OKA collaborations with theoretical predictions based on the recent non-perturbative determinations of the structure-dependent vector and axial-vector form factors, $F_V$ and $F_A$ respectively. These were obtained using lattice QCD+QED simulations at order $O(α_{\mathrm{em}})$ in the electromagnetic coupling. We find good agreement with the KLOE data on $K\to eν_eγ$ decays from which the form factor $F^+=F_V+…
Quantum electrodynamical (QED) calculations of ionization energies of the $1snd\,D$ states are performed for the helium atom. We reproduce the previously known relativistic and QED effects up to order $mα^5$ and extend the theory by calculating the complete $mα^6$ correction. The total contribution of the $mα^6$ effects is shown to be much smaller than previously estimated, due to a large cancelation between the radiative and non-radiative parts of this correction. As a result of our calculations, we confirm the previously reported deviations between measured transition energies and theoretica…
Infrared power corrections for Minkowskian QCD observables are analyzed in the framework of renormalon resummation, motivated by analogy with the skeleton expansion in QED and the BLM approach. Performing the ``massive gluon'' renormalon integral a renormalization scheme invariant result is obtained. Various regularizations of the integral are studied. In particular, we compare the infrared cutoff regularization with the standard principal value Borel sum and show that they yield equivalent results once power terms are included. As an example the average thrust < T > in e+e- annihilation is an…
A dedicated effort by both the experimental and theoretical communities is crucial for achieving a precise determination of Standard Model parameters such as the $W$ mass ($M_W$). $M_W$ is measured directly at the CERN LEP2 $e^+ e^-$ and the Fermilab Tevatron $p \bar p$ colliders, resulting in a precision of $δM_W/M_W=0.03%$. A complementary $M_W$ measurement is provided by the NuTeV collaboration, who extract $\sin^2 θ_W$, and thus $M_W$, from the ratio of deep-inelastic neutral and charged-current neutrino(anti-neutrino)-Nucleon ($νN(\bar νN)$) scattering cross sections. However, their resul…
Two aspects of isospin breaking in the decay $K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm \stackrel{_{(-)}}{ν_e}$ are studied and discussed. The first addresses the possible influence of the phenomenological description of the unitarity cusp on the extraction of the normalization of the form factor from data. Using the scalar form factor of the pion as a theoretical laboratory, we find that this determination is robust under variations of the phenomenological parameterizations of the form factor. The second aspect concerns the issue of radiative corrections. We compute the radiative corrections to the total decay…
We revisit our previous model proposed in Ref. \cite{Okada:2013iba}, in which lepton masses except the tauon mass are generated at the one-loop level in a TeV scale physics. Although in the previous work, rather large Yukawa couplings constants; i.e., greater than about 3, are required to reproduce the muon mass, we do not need to introduce such a large but ${\cal O}$(1) couplings. In our model, masses for neutrinos (charged-leptons) are generated by a dimension five effective operator with two isospin triplet (singlet and doublet) scalar fields. Thus, the mass hierarchy between neutrinos and …
QCD theory predicts the existence of glueballs, but so far all experimental endeavors have failed to identify any such states. To remedy this discrepancy between QCD, which has proven to be a successful theory for strong interactions, and the failure of experimental searches for glueballs, one is tempted to accept the promising interpretation that the glueballs mix with regular $q\bar q$ states of the same quantum numbers. The lattice estimate of the masses of pure $0^{++}$ glueballs ranges from 1 to 2 GeV, which is the region of the $f_0$ family. Thus many authors suggest that the $f_0$ meson…
KLOE and Babar have an observed discrepancy of 2% to 5% in the invariant pion pair production cross section. These measurements are based on approximate NLO $ μ^+ μ^- γ$ cross section predictions of the Monte Carlo event generator PHOKHARA7.0. In this article, the complete NLO radiative corrections to $ μ^+ μ^- γ$ production are calculated and implemented in the Monte Carlo event generator PHOKHARA9.0. Numerical reliability is guaranteed by two independent approaches to the real and the virtual corrections. The novel features include the contribution of pentagon diagrams in the virtual correct…
There is a well known anomaly between the value of the Fermi decay constant extracted from super-allowed Fermi beta-decay of nuclear isotriplets and that required by unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. This discrepancy remains at the level of a few tenths of a percent after the most rigorous investigation of conventional nuclear and radiative corrections. Within the framework of the quark-meson coupling model of nuclear matter, which has been previously applied successfully to phenomena such as nuclear saturation and nuclear charge symmetry violation, we show that it is possible…
The measured branching ratio of the $D$ meson semileptonic decay $D \to ρe^+ ν_e$, which is based on the $0.82~{\rm fb^{-1}}$ CLEO data taken at the peak of $ψ(3770)$ resonance, disagrees with the traditional SVZ sum rules analysis by about three times. In the paper, we show that this discrepancy can be eliminated by applying the QCD light-cone sum rules (LCSR) approach to calculate the $D\to ρ$ transition form factors $A_{1,2}(q^2)$ and $V(q^2)$. After extrapolating the LCSR predictions of these TFFs to whole $q^2$-region, we obtain $1/|V_{\rm cd}|^2 \times Γ(D \to ρe ν_e) =(55.45^{+13.34}_{-…
We provide a systematic assessment of the order-$α^5$ nuclear contributions to the Lamb shift of muonic deuterium, including the accompanying radiative corrections due to vacuum polarization, up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) within the pionless effective field theory (EFT). We also evaluate higher-order corrections due to the single-nucleon structure, which are expected to be the most important corrections beyond N3LO. We find a correlation between the deuteron charge and Friar radii, which can be useful to judge the quality of charge form factor parametrisations. We refine t…
We study the role of the lattice artifacts associated with the Coulomb binding effects in the analysis of the heavy quarkonium within lattice NRQCD. We find that a "naive" perturbative matching generates spurious linear Coulomb artifacts, which result in a large systematic error in the lattice predictions for the heavy quarkonium spectrum. This effect is responsible, in particular, for the discrepancy between the recent determinations of the bottomonium hyperfine splitting in the radiatively improved lattice NRQCD [1, 2]. We show that the correct matching procedure which provides full control …
We have discovered 7 intimate connections between the published results for the radiative corrections, $\Ck$, to the Gross--Llewellyn Smith (GLS) sum rule, in deep-inelastic lepton scattering, and the radiative corrections, $\Cr$, to the Adler function of the flavour-singlet vector current, in $\ee$ annihilation. These include a surprising relation between the scheme-independent single-electron-loop contributions to the 4-loop QED $β$\/-function and the zero-fermion-loop abelian terms in the 3-loop GLS sum rule. The combined effect of all 7 relations is to give the factorization of the 2-loop …
