The mechanism of charge carrier interaction in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) remains an unresolved problem, where some researchers proposed the dominance of the electron-phonon interaction, while the others showed evidence for electron-electron or electron-magnon interactions. Here we propose to resolve this problem by generalizing the Bloch-Grüneisen equation and using it for the analysis of the temperature dependent resistivity in TBG. It is a well-established theoretical result that the Bloch-Grüneisen equation power-law exponent, n, exhibits exact integer values for certain mechanisms. For instance, n=5 implies the electron-phonon interaction, n=3 is associated with electron-magnon interaction and n=2 applies to the electron-electron interaction. Here we interpret the linear temperature-dependent resistance, widely observed in TBG, as n$\rightarrow$1, which implies the quasielastic charge interaction with acoustic phonons. Thus, we fitted TBG resistance curves to the Bloch-Grüneisen equation, where we propose that n is a free-fitting parameter. We found that TBGs have a smoothly varied n-value (ranging from 1.4 to 4.4) depending on the Moiré superlattice constant, $λ$, or the charge carrier concentration. This implies that different mechanisms smoothly transition from one to another. The proposed generalized Bloch-Grüneisen equation is applicable to a wide range of problems, including the Earth geology.
Localized electrons subject to applied magnetic fields can restart to propagate freely through the lattice in delocalized magnetic Bloch states (MBSs) when the lattice periodicity is commensurate with the magnetic length. Twisted graphene superlattices with moiré wavelength tunability enable experimental access to the unique delocalization in a controllable fashion. Here we report the observation and characterization of high-temperature Brown-Zak (BZ) oscillations which come in two types, 1/B and B periodicity, originating from the generation of integer and fractional MBSs, in the twisted bila…
Moiré superlattice created by twist stacking has multiple physical properties. These physical properties depend on the twist angle, hence investigation of the twist angle dependency is important for the deep understanding of physical phenomena in moiré superlattice. In this work, negative magnetoresistance owing to weak localization (WL) was investigated in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) as a function of the twist angle. The ratio of the intervalley scattering time to the intravalley scattering time, estimated using the WL formula for bilayer graphene, tended to decrease as the twist a…
We consider the electronic structure of a slightly twisted graphene bilayer and show the coexistence of van Hove singularities (VHSs) and superlattice Dirac points in a continuum approximation. The graphene-on-graphene moiré pattern gives rise to a periodic electronic potential, which leads to the emergence of the superlattice Dirac points due to the chiral nature of the charge carriers. Owning to the distinguishing real and reciprocal structures, the sublattice exchange even and odd structures of the twisted graphene bilayer (the two types of commensurate structures) result in two different s…
Moiré superlattices in twisted van der Waals materials constitute a promising platform for engineering electronic and optical properties. However, a major obstacle to fully understanding these systems and harnessing their potential is the limited ability to correlate the local moiré structure with optical properties. By using a recently developed scanning electron microscopy technique to image twisted WSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ bilayers, we directly correlate increasing moiré periodicity with the emergence of two distinct exciton species. These can be tuned individually through electrostatic gating, and …
Motivated by recent experimental findings on the low-energy spectrum of Kekulé-patterned graphene, the optoelectronic signatures of graphene superlattices with a spatial modulation that triples the size of the unit cell and folds the valleys to the center of the Brillouin zone are studied. For superlattices like those visualized in recent experiments, the optoelectronic response reveals multiple species of carriers distinguished by their effective masses or Fermi velocities. Their signatures are similar to those of systems hosting multifold fermions in which different frequency intervals are d…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TwBLG) is one of the simplest van der Waals heterostructures, yet it yields a complex electronic system with intricate interplay between moiré physics and interlayer hybridization effects. We report on electronic transport measurements of high mobility small angle TwBLG devices showing clear evidence for insulating states at the superlattice band edges, with thermal activation gaps several times larger than theoretically predicted. Moreover, Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and tight binding calculations reveal that the band structure consists of two intersecting Fermi …
Layers of two-dimensional materials stacked with a small twist-angle give rise to beating periodic patterns on a scale much larger than the original lattice, referred to as a moiré superlattice. When the stacking involves more than two layers with independent twist angles between adjacent layers, it generates moiré of moiré superlattices, with multiple length scales that control the system's behavior. Here we demonstrate these effects of a high-order moiré superlattice in twisted trilayer graphene with two consecutive small twist angles. We report correlated insulating states near the half fil…
Lattice reconstruction in twisted transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers gives rise to piezo- and ferroelectric moiré potentials for electrons and holes, as well as a modulation of the hybridisation across the bilayer. Here, we develop hybrid $\mathbf{k}\cdot \mathbf{p}$ tight-binding models to describe electrons and holes in the relevant valleys of twisted TMD homobilayers with parallel (P) and anti-parallel (AP) orientations of the monolayer unit cells. We apply these models to describe moiré superlattice effects in twisted WSe${}_2$ bilayers, in conjunction with microscopic \emph{ab…
Strong band engineering in two-dimensional (2D) materials can be achieved by introducing moiré superlattices, leading to the emergence of various novel quantum phases with promising potential for future applications. Presented works to create moiré patterns have been focused on a twist embedded inside channel materials or between channel and substrate. However, the effects of a twist inside the substrate materials on the unaligned channel materials are much less explored. In this work, we report the realization of superlattice multi-Dirac cones with the coexistence of the main Dirac cone in a …
Moiré-superlattices are ubiquitous in 2D heterostructures, strongly influencing their electronic properties. They give rise to new Dirac cones and are also at the origin of the superconductivity observed in magic-angle bilayer graphene. The modulation amplitude (corrugation) is an important yet largely unexplored parameter in defining the properties of 2D superlattices. The generally accepted view is that the corrugation monotonically decreases with increasing twist angle, while its effects on the electronic structure diminish as the layers become progressively decoupled. Here we found by latt…
In two-dimensional (2D) twisted bilayers, the van der Waals (vdW) interlayer interaction introduces atomic-scale reconstruction at interface by locally rotating lattice to form strain-field vortex networks in their moiré superlattice. However, direct imaging the tiny local lattice rotation of the strain-field vortex requires extremely high spatial resolution and is an outstanding challenge in experiment. Here, a topmost small-period graphene moiré pattern is introduced to magnify sub-Angstrom distortions of the lattice and tiny local lattice rotation in underlying twisted bilayer graphene (TBG…
Moiré superlattices in graphene supported on various substrates have opened a new avenue to engineer graphene's electronic properties. Yet, the exact crystallographic structure on which their band structure depends remains highly debated. In this scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory study, we have analysed graphene samples grown on multilayer graphene prepared onto SiC and on the close-packed surfaces of Re and Ir with ultra-high precision. We resolve small-angle twists and shears in graphene, and identify large unit cells comprising more than 1,000 carbon atoms and exhi…
The electronic properties of bilayer graphene strongly depend on relative orientation of the two atomic lattices. Whereas Bernal-stacked graphene is most commonly studied, a rotational mismatch between layers opens up a whole new field of rich physics, especially at small interlayer twist. Here we report on magnetotransport measurements on twisted graphene bilayers, prepared by folding of single layers. These reveal a strong dependence on the twist angle, which can be estimated by means of sample geometry. At small rotation, superlattices with a wavelength in the order of 10 nm arise and are o…
Starting from a continuum-model description, we develop a microscopic weak-coupling theory for superconductivity in twisted double-bilayer graphene. We study both electron-phonon and entirely electronic pairing mechanisms. In each case, the leading superconducting instability transforms under the trivial representation, $A$, of the point group $C_3$ of the system, while the subleading pairing phases belong to the $E$ channel. We explicitly compute the momentum dependence of the associated order parameters and find that the leading state has no nodal points for electron-phonon pairing but exhib…
Bi-layer graphene with a twist angle θ between the layers generates a superlattice structure known as Moiré pattern. This superlattice provides a θ-dependent q wavevector that activates phonons in the interior of the Brillouin zone. Here we show that this superlattice-induced Raman scattering can be used to probe the phonon dispersion in twisted bi-layer graphene (tBLG). The effect reported here is different from the broadly studied double-resonance in graphene-related materials in many aspects, and despite the absence of stacking order in tBLG, layer breathing vibrations (namely ZO' phonons) …
We show that the combination of X-ray scattering with a nanofocused beam and X-ray cross correlation analysis is an efficient means for the full structural characterization of mesocrystalline nanoparticle assemblies with a single experiment. We analyze several hundred diffraction patterns of individual sample locations, i.e. individual grains, to obtain a meaningful statistical distribution of the superlattice and atomic lattice ordering. Simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering of the same sample location allows us to determine the structure and orientation of the superlattice as w…
The recently observed unconventional ferroelectricity in AB bilayer graphene sandwiched by hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) presents a new platform to manipulate correlated phases in multilayered van der Waals heterostructures. We present a low-energy continuum model for AB bilayer graphene encapsulated by the top and bottom layers of either hBN or graphene, with two independent twist angles. For the graphene/hBN heterostructures, we show that twist angle asymmetry leads to a layer polarization of the valence and conduction bands. We also show that an out-of-plane displacement field not only tune…
Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) provides us with a large rotational freedom to explore new physics and novel device applications, but many of its basic properties remain unresolved. Here we report the synthesis and systematic Raman study of tBLG. Chemical vapor deposition was used to synthesize hexagon- shaped tBLG with a rotation angle that can be conveniently determined by relative edge misalignment. Superlattice structures are revealed by the observation of two distinctive Raman features: folded optical phonons and enhanced intensity of the 2D-band. Both signatures are strongly correlated w…
Twisted moiré superlattices (TMSs) are fascinating materials with exotic physical properties. Despite tremendous studies on electronic, photonic and phononic TMSs, it has never been witnessed that TMSs can exhibit higher-order band topology. Here, we report on the experimental observation of higher-order topological states in acoustic TMSs. By introducing moiré twisting in bilayer honeycomb lattices of coupled acoustic resonators, we find a regime with designed interlayer couplings where a sizable band gap with higher-order topology emerges. This higher-order topological phase host unique topo…

A double moiré superlattice can be realized by stacking three layers of atomically thin two-dimensional materials with designer interlayer twisting or lattice mismatches. In this novel structure, atomic reconstruction of constituent layers could introduce significant modifications to the lattice symmetry and electronic structure at small twist angles. Here, we employ conductive atomic force microscopy (cAFM) to investigate symmetry breaking and local electrical properties in twisted trilayer graphene. We observe clear double moiré superlattices with two distinct moire periods all over the samp…
Lateral superlattices in 2D materials are emerging as a powerful platform for exploring novel quantum phenomena, which can be realized through the proximity coupling in forming moiré pattern with another layer. This approach, however, is invasive, material-specific, and requires small lattice mismatch and suitable band alignment, largely limited to graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) of anti-parallel (AA') stacking order has been an indispensable building block, as dielectric substrates and capping layers for realizing high quality van der Waals…

In stacks of two-dimensional crystals, mismatch of their lattice constants and misalignment of crystallographic axes lead to formation of moiré patterns. We show that moiré superlattice effects persist in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) with large twists and short moiré periods. Using angle-resolved photoemission, we observe dramatic changes in valence band topology across large regions of the Brillouin zone, including the vicinity of the saddle point at $M$ and across 3 eV from the Dirac points. In this energy range, we resolve several moiré minibands and detect signatures of secondary Dirac …
We show that a sliding motion between the two layers of a \moire superlattice induces an electric current and realizes a two-dimensional version of the topological Thouless pump when the Fermi energy lies in one of the minigaps. Interestingly, a chiral charge pump, namely, a transverse current induced by the sliding motion, is possible in twisted homobilayers. This result is confirmed by a concrete calculation of the adiabatic current in twisted bilayer graphene. Our work reveals an interesting link between mechanical motion and electricity unique to \moire superlattices, and may find applicat…
We study the magneto-optical conductivity of a number of Van der Waals heterostructures, namely, twisted bilayer graphene, AB-AB and AB-BA stacked twisted double bilayer graphene and monolayer graphene and AB-stacked bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride. As magnetic field increases, the absorption spectrum exhibits a self-similar recursive pattern reflecting the fractal nature of the energy spectrum. Whilst twisted bilayer graphene displays only weak circular dichroism, monolayer graphene and AB-stacked bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride show specifically strong circular dichro…
Quantum confinement endows two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with exceptional physics and novel properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Although certain two- and few-layer configurations of graphene have been realized and studied, a systematic investigation of the properties of arbitrarily layered graphene assemblies is still lacking. We introduce theoretical concepts and methods for the processing of materials information, and as a case study, apply them to investigate the electronic structure of multi-layer graphene-based assemblies in a high-throughput fashion. We provide a cri…
Twisted Van der Waals systems offer the unprecedented possibility to tune different states of correlated quantum matter with an external non-invasive electrostatic doping. The nature of the superconducting order presents a recurring open question in this context. In this work, we quantitatively assess the case of spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing for $Γ$-valley twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers. We self-consistently and dynamically calculate the doping dependent superconducting transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ revealing a superconducting dome with a maximal $T_{\mathr…

We propose Landau levels as a probe for the topological character of electronic bands in two-dimensional moiré superlattices. We consider two configurations of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) that have very similar band structures, but show different valley Chern numbers of the flat bands. These differences between the AB-AB and AB-BA configurations of TDBG clearly manifest as different Landau level sequences in the Hofstadter butterfly spectra calculated using the tight-binding model. The Landau level sequences are explained from the point of view of the distribution of orbital magneti…
We demonstrate that one-dimensional moiré patterns, analogous to those found in twisted bilayer graphene, can arise in collapsed chiral carbon nanotubes. Resorting to a combination of approaches, namely, molecular dynamics to obtain the relaxed geometries and tight-binding calculations validated against ab initio modeling, we find that magic angle physics occur in collapsed carbon nanotubes. Velocity reduction, flat bands and localization in AA regions with diminishing moiré angle are revealed, showing a magic angle close to 1$^{\rm o}$. From the spatial extension of the AA regions and the wid…
We present a systematic classification and analysis of possible pairing instabilities in graphene-based moiré superlattices. Motivated by recent experiments on twisted double-bilayer graphene showing signs of triplet superconductivity, we analyze both singlet and triplet pairing separately, and describe how these two channels behave close to the limit where the system is invariant under separate spin rotations in the two valleys, realizing an SU(2)$_+$ $\times$ SU(2)$_-$ symmetry. Further, we discuss the conditions under which singlet and triplet can mix via two nearly degenerate transitions, …
Moiré superlattices can induce correlated-electronic phases in twisted van-der-Waals materials. Strongly correlated quantum phenomena emerge, such as superconductivity and the Mott-insulating state. However, moiré superlattices produced through artificial stacking can be quite inhomogeneous, which hampers the development of a clear correlation between the moiré period and the emerging electrical and optical properties. Here we demonstrate in twisted-bilayer transition-metal dichalcogenides that low-frequency Raman scattering can be utilized not only to detect atomic reconstruction, but also to…
Twisted graphene bilayers provide a versatile platform to engineer metamaterials with novel emergent properties by exploiting the resulting geometric moiré superlattice. Such superlattices are known to host bulk valley currents at tiny angles ($α\approx 0.3 ^\circ$) and flat bands at magic angles ($α\approx 1^\circ$). We show that tuning the twist angle to $α^*\approx 0.8^\circ$ generates flat bands away from charge neutrality with a triangular superlattice periodicity. When doped with $\pm 6$ electrons per moiré cell, these bands are half-filled and electronic interactions produce a symmetry-…
We report a combined nano-photocurrent and infrared nanoscopy study of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) enabling access to the local electronic phenomena at length scales as short as 20 nm. We show that the photocurrent changes sign at carrier densities tracking the local superlattice density of states of TBG. We use this property to identify domains of varying local twist angle by local photo-thermoelectric effect. Consistent with the photocurrent study, infrared nano-imaging experiments reveal optical conductivity features dominated by twist-angle dependent interband transitions. Our results p…
Kitaev quantum spin liquids have been the focus of intense research effort thanks to the discovery of various materials (e.g., RuCl3) that approximate their intriguing physics. In this paper we construct a mean-field approximation for a moir`e superlattice emerging in twisted Kitaev bilayers in terms of solutions of commensurate bilayers. We show that the band structure of deconfined spinons, defined on the mini-Brillouin zone of the superlattice, is greatly modified. The system exhibits a hyper-magic manifold: a series of nearly perfectly-flat bands appear at energies above the lowest gap, ex…
We study the atomic and electronic structures of the commensurate double moiré superlattices in fully relaxed twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) nearly aligned with the hexagonal boron nitride (BN). The single-particle effective Hamiltonian ($\hat{H}^0$) taking into account the relaxation effect and the full moiré Hamiltonian introduced by BN has been built for TBG/BN. The mean-field (MF) band structures of the self-consistent Hartree-Fock (SCHF) ground states at different number ($ν$) of filled flat bands relative to the charge neutrality point (CNP) are obtained based on $\hat{H}^0$ in the plane…
