The present work is devoted to an extension of the well-known Ehrling inequalities, which quantitatively characterize compact embeddings of function spaces, to more general operators. Firstly, a modified notion of continuity for linear operators, named \emph{Ehrling continuity} and inspired by the classical Ehrling inequality, is introduced, and then, a necessary and sufficient condition for Ehrling continuity is provided via arguments based on general topology. Secondly, general completely continuous operators between normed spaces are characterized in terms of (generalized) Ehrling type inequalities. To this end, the well-known local metrization of the weak topology (so to speak, a \emph{very weak norm}) plays a crucial role. Thanks to these results, a universal relation is observed among complete continuity, the very weak norm and generalized Ehrling type inequality.
As part of the search for the value of the smallest upper bound of the best constant for the famous Grothendieck inequality, the so-called Grothendieck constant (a hard open problem - unsolved since 1953), we provide a further approach, primarily built on functions which map correlation matrices entrywise to correlation matrices by means of the Schur product, multivariate Gaussian analysis, copulas and inversion of suitable Taylor series. We summarise first results and point towards related open problems and topics for future research.
We prove a matrix trace inequality for completely monotone functions and for Bernstein functions. As special cases we obtain non-trivial trace inequalities for the power function x->x^q, which for certain values of q complement McCarthy's trace inequality and for others strenghten it.
We prove that generalized matrix functions satisfy a block-matrix strong superadditivity inequality over the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. Our result extends a recent result of Paksoy-Turkmen-Zhang (V. Paksoy, R. Turkmen, F. Zhang, Inequalities of generalized matrix functions via tensor products, Electron. J. Linear Algebra 27 (2014) 332-341.). As an application, we obtain a short proof of a classical inequality of Thompson (1961) on block matrix determinants.
We develop the notions of hypercontractivity (HC) and the log-Sobolev (LS) inequality for completely bounded norms of one-parameter semigroups of super-operators acting on matrix algebras. We prove the equivalence of the completely bounded versions of HC and LS under suitable hypotheses. We also prove a version of the Gross Lemma which allows LS at general $q$ to be deduced from LS at $q=2$.
{\it We study the class of all rearrangement-invariant (=r.i.) function spaces $E$ on $[0,1]$ such that there exists $0<q<1$ for which $ \Vert \sum_{_{k=1}}^nξ_k\Vert_{E}\leq Cn^{q}$, where $\{ξ_k\}_{k\ge 1}\subset E$ is an arbitrary sequence of independent identically distributed symmetric random variables on $[0,1]$ and $C>0$ does not depend on $n$. We completely characterize all Lorentz spaces having this property and complement classical results of Rodin and Semenov for Orlicz spaces $exp(L_p)$, $p\ge 1$. We further apply our results to the study of Banach-Saks index sets in r.i. spaces.
In this paper we prove that several operator algebras are completely isomorphic to each other; e.g., the $C^*_λ(F_k)$, $k\geq 2$, the $C^*$-algebras generated by the regular left representation $λ:F_k\to B(\ell_2(F_k))$, are completely isomorphic to each other. We also study the ``non-commutative'' analytic spaces introduced by G. Popescu [Po], and give applications to Popescu's version of Von Neumann's inequality.
We completely characterize the validity of the inequality $\|u\|_{Y(\mathbb{R}^n)}\leq C \|\nabla^m u\|_{X(\mathbb{R}^n)}$, where $X$ and $Y$ are rearrangement-invariant spaces, by reducing it to a considerably simpler one-dimensional inequality. Furthermore, we fully describe the optimal rearrangement-invariant space on either side of the inequality when the space on the other side is fixed. We also solve the same problem within the environment in which the competing spaces are Orlicz spaces. A variety of examples involving customary function spaces suitable for applications is also provided.
Using free random varaibles we find an embedding of the operator space $OH$ in the predual of a von Neumann algebra. The properties of this embedding allow us to determined the projection constant of $OH_n$, i.e. there exists a projection $P:B(\ell_2)\to OH_n$ whose completely bounded norm behaves as n^{1/2}/(1+ln n)^{1/2}. According to recent results of Pisier/Shlyahtenko, the lower bound holds for every projection. Improving a previous estimate of order $(1+ ln n)$ of the author, Pisier/Shlyahtenko obtained a `logarithmic little Grothendieck inequality'. We find a second proof of this inequa…
We give a counterexample to a trilinear version of the operator space Grothendieck theorem. In particular, we show that for trilinear forms on $\ell_\infty$, the ratio of the symmetrized completely bounded norm and the jointly completely bounded norm is in general unbounded, answering a question of Pisier. The proof is based on a non-commutative version of the generalized von Neumann inequality from additive combinatorics.
In this paper we study the operator inequality ϕ(X)\leq X and the operator equation ϕ(X)= X, where ϕis a w^*-continuous positive (resp. completely positive) linear map on B(H). We show that their solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with a class of Poisson transforms on Cuntz-Toeplitz C^*-algebras, if ϕis completely positive. Canonical decompositions, ergodic type theorems, and lifting theorems are obtained and used to provide a complete description of all solutions, when ϕ(I)\leq I. We show that the above-mentioned inequality (resp. equation) and the structure of its solutions have stro…
We systematically study how properties of abstract operator systems help classifying linear matrix inequality definitions of sets. Our main focus is on polyhedral cones, the 3-dimensional Lorentz cone, where we can completely describe all defining linear matrix inequalities, and on the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. Here we use results on isometries between matrix algebras to describe linear matrix inequality definitions of relatively small size. We conversely use the theory of operator systems to characterize special such isometries.
The paper is a continuation of our paper [12,2], and it studies functional inequalities for non-local Dirichlet forms with finite range jumps or large jumps. Let $α\in(0,2)$ and $μ_V(dx)=C_Ve^{-V(x)}\,dx$ be a probability measure. We present explicit and sharp criteria for the Poincaré inequality and the super Poincaré inequality of the following non-local Dirichlet form with finite range jump $$\mathscr{E}_{α, V}(f,f):= (1/2)\iint_{|x-y|\le 1}\frac{(f(x)-f(y))^2}{|x-y|^{d+α}} dy μ_V(dx);$$ on the other hand, we give sharp criteria for the Poincaré inequality of the non-local Dirichlet form wi…
Assuming a unitarily invariant norm $|||\cdot|||$ is given on a two-sided ideal of bounded linear operators acting on a separable Hilbert space, it induces some unitarily invariant norms $|||\cdot|||$ on matrix algebras $\mathcal{M}_n$ for all finite values of $n$ via $|||A|||=|||A\oplus 0|||$. We show that if $\mathscr{A}$ is a $C^*$-algebra of finite dimension $k$ and $Φ: \mathscr{A} \to \mathcal{M}_n$ is a unital completely positive map, then \begin{equation*} |||Φ(AB)-Φ(A)Φ(B)||| \leq \frac{1}{4} |||I_{n}|||\,|||I_{kn}||| d_A d_B \end{equation*} for any $A,B \in \mathscr{A}$, where $d_X$ d…
Following Grothendieck's characterization of Hilbert spaces we consider operator spaces $F$ such that both $F$ and $F^*$ completely embed into the dual of a C*-algebra. Due to Haagerup/Musat's improved version of Pisier/Shlyakhtenko's Grothendieck inequality for operator spaces, these spaces are quotients of subspaces of the direct sum $C\oplus R$ of the column and row spaces (the corresponding class being denoted by $QS(C\oplus R)$). We first prove a representation theorem for homogeneous $F\in QS(C\oplus R)$ starting from the fundamental sequences defined by column and row norms of unit vect…
We generalize the concepts of weak quantum logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI) and weak hypercontractivity (HC), introduced in the quantum setting by Olkiewicz and Zegarlinski, to the case of non-primitive quantum Markov semigroups (QMS). The originality of this work resides in that this new notion of hypercontractivity is given in terms of the so-called amalgamated $\mathbb{L}_p$ norms introduced recently by Junge and Parcet in the context of operator spaces theory. We make three main contributions. The first one is a version of Gross' integration lemma: we prove that (weak) HC implies (weak…
